Young Jeremy Jacob is plucked from obscurity while innocently constructing a sand castle and is thrust into a brand-new life as a pirate. Captain Braid Beard and his crew recognize Jeremy as an exceptionally talented digger and they happen to be in desperate need of a digger to help them bury a treasure chest. Jeremy thinks a pirate life sounds like fun, as long as he's back the next day in time for soccer practice, and so he goes along with the ragtag group of seafaring thugs (with hearts of gold, naturally). And while Jeremy adores the pirates' lack of table manners and opposition to vegetables, he comes to realize that a life away from his parents lacks some of the niceties to which he's become accustomed. Nobody tucks him in at night, for instance, and the only book available to read is a treasure map. Melinda Long's story, narrated with a sense of boastful exaggeration by Jeremy, is full of a sense of high adventure that's lovingly evocative of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic tales. David Shannon's illustrations, full of a goofy vibrancy, are a perfect accompaniment to the story. (Ages 4 to 8) --John Moe

Book Description

When Braid Beard's pirate crew invites Jeremy Jacob to join their voyage, he jumps right on board. Buried treasure, sea chanteys, pirate talk--who wouldn't go along? Soon Jeremy Jacob knows all about being a pirate. He throws his food across the table and his manners to the wind. He hollers like thunder and laughs off bedtime. It's the heave-ho, blow-the-man-down, very best time of his life. Until he finds out what pirates don't do--no reading bedtime stories, no tucking kids in. . . . Maybe being a pirate isn't so great after all.
Caldecott Honor-winning illustrator David Shannon teams up with witty storyteller Melinda Long for a hilarious look at the finer points of pirate life.

5 out of 5 stars Great illustrations and totally entertaining story.......2007-09-27

I bought this for my 3 1/2 year old grandson and he loved it. Whenever Grammy comes to visit I try to have scoured Amazon.com for what look like the best children's books and as he had loved David Shannon's books I bought this one as I knew the illustrations would be colorful. It is a fun story but the best part, it lends itself so well to playing imaginatively. Immediately after reading it, we went outside and I played cartographer helping my grandson draw our own treasure map with instructions how to get to the tree in his backyard where we buried a seashell. He was so excited to show his Mommy and his baby brother how well the map worked and where our treasure was buried. Great little story and we read it several times over the next few days...always noticing something else in the pictures we hadn't seen before and then making up our own stories about what we saw. So I bought "Pirates Don't Change Diapers" also and pirate tattoos to continue the saga. Lots of scope for the imagination here!

5 out of 5 stars Great Pirate Book.......2007-09-19

My boys have two books from this collection and LOVE them both! Great photos and funny story.

5 out of 5 stars great fun.......2007-07-16

Jeremy, probably feeling a little neglected on the beach, goes off with a band of pirates. He feels his parents won't mind as as long as he is back in time for soccer practice the next day. Initially, he finds this adventure to be exciting, liberating and great fun. Soon he realizes a pirate's life is not exactly ideal. There's no tucking in, no books, and no goodnight kisses! Of course, a storm must swoop down on the ship and the treasure is in peril. Jeremy has the ideal solution, which you'll love. This is a truly fun book for children ages 4-9. My students really enjoy this as a read aloud and then being able to revisit it on their own.

5 out of 5 stars Away My Hearties to a great read.......2007-07-07

This is a great adventure book for younger kids. Our family has really enjoyed all the Pirate books and look forward to more.

Melinda Longs How I Became a Pirate is a New York Times best-seller. Jeremy Jacob was sitting on the beach one fine day with his parents when he saw a pirate ship heading their way. He tried to warn his family, but it was already much too late. When the ship landed, the pirates welcomed Jeremy aboard. Jeremy thought that being a pirate would be fun, but it wasnt nearly as nice as he thought it would be. Late one night at sea, a gigantic storm struck, and the pirate ship was wrecked. With nowhere else to go, Jeremy and the pirates go back to his house!

                        Book Description

Documents the ways in which Mexican liberals, radicals, and conservatives all employed market rhetoric to establish their political identities and map out their courses of action, showing how the market became an emblem linked to the identity of each group. By focusing on these rhetorical contests, Weiner offers a new perspective on social mobilization in late nineteenth-century Mexico as it also explores the related field of Porfirian economic culture and thought.

                          Book Description

`It is one of Rossi's merits that his book moves from a critical to a positive analysis of inflation. . . The reader is thus taken on a stimulating journey where well-established “truths” are challenged on logical and factual grounds.'

                          - From the Foreword by Mauro Baranzini and Alvaro Cencini It is a popular notion that money and output are separate and autonomous entities. Money and Inflation argues that this idea can neither explain the purchasing power of money nor its variations over time, and a new theory is therefore presented in its place.

The book provides the foundations for a new analysis of inflation from a macroeconomic perspective. The role of money is investigated in terms of value, prices, profit, and capital accumulation.

The author argues that in order to gain a thorough comprehension of inflation it is necessary to focus on the formation of national income, not on its distribution. Sergio Rossi's new approach proposes a structural reform of modern banking systems, and outlines an original macro-theoretical investigation of measurement problems in price index theory.

Despite its elective affinity with the works of Ricardo, Walras and Keynes, the new analysis overturns traditional concepts of money. The discussion elicits a deeper understanding of the conditions underlying today's inflationary pressures and prescribes new solutions to permanently eradicate them.

This unique and path-breaking study will be of enormous interest to academics, researchers, and students involved in monetary economics, as well as monetary policy makers, and central bank and international banking officials.

4 out of 5 stars Great for intermediate or returning guitar player.......2000-04-18

I have just begun playing the guitar again after a twenty year 'break'. Looking for music to play while still having helpful prompts was a must. This book contains classical rock and acoustic ballads I enjoyed years ago while providing tabulature and chord diagrams and in some instances, alternate tuning with capo. It would have gotten 5 stars if in some songs, the chord diagrams where placed at the actual chord change within the song instead of being listed all together under the title with only the text representation in the notation. A good choice to make if you want to begin playing a song quickly!

                                  Book Description

During the early part of the nineteenth century, the Southwestern frontier moved from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, through Alabama, Tennessee, and Mississippi, to Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana. Using a variety of styles and subjects, humorists in the frontier states of the Southwest wrote tall tales and humorous stories that made use of dialect and emphasized cruelty, violence, and depravity, in rebellion against the sentimental morality of conventional literature. Such tales flourished from 1835 through 1861 and helped buffer the pioneers during their everyday hardships. The humorists' stories, though exaggerated, were often rooted in the real characters and incidents of the frontier and as such serve as a social history of the period. Many of these stories were originally published in local newspapers and reprinted in William T. Porter's Spirit of the Times. Although the popularity of this type of humor died out with the beginning of the Civil War, its influences can be seen in the works of Mark Twain, William Faulkner, Flannery O'Connor, and Thomas Wolfe. The bibliography lists works about Southwest humor in general and by and about nine major humorists including David Crockett, Joseph Glover Baldwin, George Washington Harris, Johnson Jones Hooper, Henry Clay Lewis, Augustus Baldwin Longstreeet, Charles Fenton Mercer Noland, William Tappan Thompson, and Thomas Bangs Thorpe. These two main sections are supplemented by author and general subject indices. As the first book-length bibliography in this field, Humor of the Old Southwest will make a useful tool in academic libraries and will find a place in collections of folklore, American literature, and humor.

                                    Book Description

Zora Neale Hurston (1891-1960) is one of 20th-century America's foremost fiction and folklore writers. One of the most important authors of the Harlem Renaissance and one of the first black anthropologists, she received little recognition during her lifetime. She was criticized by some of her contemporaries, including Richard Wright and Ralph Ellison, and her works were largely neglected until the early 1970s. Her works are now frequently taught in literature courses and are widely admired for their style and substance. Her anthropological study, Mules and Men (1935), is a pioneering examination of Voodoo and related folklore. As a novelist, she is best known as the author of Jonah's Gourd Vine (1934) and Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937). In addition, she was a prolific journalist who contributed to the most popular magazines and newspapers of her time. Though long neglected, Hurston has become firmly established in the literary canon, and scores of books and articles have been written about her. This reference book is a comprehensive guide to the large body of work written about her in the last 75 years. Included are annotated entries for books, dissertations, and theses written about Hurston's life and literary career. The volume also looks at hundreds of articles, book chapters, conference papers, reviews, children's books, and web sites. The bibliography additionally points the reader to guides and biographical sources and to anthologies where her works are collected. Finally, an exhaustive list of works by Hurston is provided, along with a catalog of the special collections where her manuscripts, correspondence, and ephemera are stored.

Very good introduction to Modo 201/202/203. A must have. Comes with DVD with professional training.

                                        5 out of 5 stars Holy Crap!.......2007-03-16

modo was hard to learn. I got this book and damn! Dan Ablan makes it look really really easy. Once I got into it, I couldn't stop. Within a few hours, I was modeling on my own, texturing and rendering. I finally understand how the action centers work and how to navigate the interface. I especially like the bonus videos on the DVD that comes with the book. I hope he writes another one but for now I got myself the 3D [...]. There's so much I've learned that I might write the next one!

2 out of 5 stars You can do better.......2007-02-03

In short: even as a beginner, you'll barely get as much out of this as you'd get from watching the free tutorials that come with Modo. Page layout isn't very good for connecting concepts with with illustrations. Description of processes is too lengthy and not to the point. I don't want to hear useless banter, I want to know what the tools do and how to use them. Fast. The book doesn't cover even 1% of the tools/functionality of Modo. This book didn't prepare me for making things on my own, just for making the objects described in the book.

The build quality of the book is the worst I've ever experienced. Pages literally fall out of the book as you turn the pages.

5 out of 5 stars Very Well Done.......2006-12-13

This book is a great help in learning Modo. It is well illustrated and the instruction is very clear. It does not repeat the help system and reference guide as some books do. The DVD that comes with it is also great.

                                        5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2006-12-06

I'm somewhat new to 3D modeling, texturing, lighting, and rendering...the basic tenants of modo. Dan Ablan's book takes you painlessly from start to finish with several different projects to get you introduced to the differences in 3D with modo. I have not had any problems with the book quality, and in fact the book is extremely well done, better than others in the genre. If I had any complaints, they would be about wanting a second, more detailed book on more advanced techniques. Once you learn the foundations of how to use modo effectively with this book, you'll be craving to get the photo-realistic renders that only modo can provide! I can't recommend a better way to start off with modo and the world of 3D!
