5 out of 5 stars The only Palm book you'll ever need.......2004-02-18

I bought this book when I bought my Palm Zire 71, and I am absolutely amazed at how much I have learned. The tips in this book alone are worth the price. For instance, I learned that I could Hotsync my Palm with my Yahoo web address book. I learned how to beam entire programs to my friend's Palm. And I learned that I could read books on my Palm, which I had no idea you could do and now love more than anything. The authors really seemed to have fun writing the book, too, and that sense of fun comes through to the reader. So much better than most computer books I've read that are dry and dull. HIghly recommended!

It is disappointing that, after spending HUNDREDS of dollars on a new Palm, no printed manual is included. How to Do Everything with Your Palm is what Palm should have included with their products. This book is a good read for the first-time Palm owner and offers some new tricks for the experienced user.
Although the cover of the book mentions wireless and shows a Tungsten C very little is written about Wi-Fi - one of the things that drew me to buy this book.
Overall, Dave Johnson and Rick Broida have done a fine job here. They have presented their material in a logical and well-written manner while having a little fun along the way.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Palm owners.......2003-09-23

This is a brand new edition and it covers all the newer Palms running OS 5, such as the Tungstens and Zires. Very well-written and an excellent choice for new or non-techie users. What I like about this book is that it covers a wide range of things you can do with your PDA, from the basic built-in functions to fairly advanced stuff like downloading your email or surfing the Internet by linking through a cell phone. And it does so in a manner that is easy for beginners without insulting the more experienced user. It also suggests additional programs and services, and tells you where to get them.

      Book Description

In 1790 the French people, by general acquiescence, embarked upon what they believed to be a harmless experiment in currency inflation. The results of this action are vividly described in Dr. Andrew D. White's book entitled Fiat Money Inflation in France - How It Came, What It Brought and How It Ended.

The story of "Fiat Money Inflation in France" is one of great interest to legislators, to economic students, and to all business and thinking men. It records the most gigantic attempt ever made in the history of the world by a government to create an inconvertible paper currency, and to maintain its circulation at various levels of value. It also records what is perhaps the greatest of all governmental efforts - with the possible exception of Diocletian's - to enact and enforce a legal limit of commodity prices. Every fetter that could hinder the will or thwart the wisdom of democracy had been shattered, and in consequence every device and expedient that untrammelled power and unrepressed optimism could conceive were brought to bear. But the attempts failed. They left behind them a legacy of moral and material desolation and woe, from which one of the most intellectual and spirited races of Europe has suffered for a century and a quarter, and will continue to suffer until the end of time. There are limitations to the powers of governments and of peoples that inhere in the constitution of things, and that neither despotisms nor democracies can overcome.

Legislatures are as powerless to abrogate moral and economic laws as they are to abrogate physical laws. They cannot convert wrong into right nor divorce effect from cause, either by parliamentary majorities, or by unity of supporting public opinion. The penalties of such legislative folly will always be exacted by inexorable time. While these propositions may be regarded as mere commonplaces, and while they are acknowledged in a general way, they are in effect denied by many of the legislative experiments and the tendencies of public opinion of the present day. The story, therefore, of the colossal folly of France in the closing part of the eighteenth century and its terrible fruits, is full of instruction for all men who think upon the problems of our own time.

      Book Description

The question will naturally be asked, On whom did this vast depreciation mainly fall at last? When this currency had sunk to about one three-hundredth part of its nominal value and, after that, to nothing, in whose hands was the bulk of it? The answer is simple. I shall give it in the exact words of that thoughtful historian from whom I have already quoted: "Before the end of the year 1795 the paper money was almost exclusively in the hands of the working classes, employees and men of small means, whose property was not large enough to invest in stores of goods or national lands.

This little book tells the epic tale of France's experiment with "irredeemable" currency (paper money which could not be redeemed for specie; gold or silver, i.e. "cash") from 1789-1796, and its devastating impact, particularly on the working class and those sent to the guillotine for violating various and sundry laws.

It should be required reading for every American, particularly congressmen and senators, for, although it was written almost one hundred years ago, the lessons it teaches are as applicable today as they have been all throughout man's history. It is obviously far too late for most nations to return to the gold standard, but this book also reveals the dangers inherent in a constantly and unlimited expansion of a nation's money supply. "Knowledge of the past," as Winston Churchill observed, "is the only foundation we have from which to peer into and measure the future." If so, the nations of the world ignore these lessons at their own peril, and so do their citizens.

So, if you'd like to know what might be down the road apiece, hopefully a very far piece, this is a good place to start. And, even if you don't make the connection, it certainly is an interesting story.

      1 out of 5 stars A goldbug bible.......2006-04-15

At least, that has been my experience. A number of conservative Americans hand this book out like popcorn, I'm not quite sure why. Surely the inflation in Weimar Germany was every bit as bad, and also more recent. In fact, there is a good book waiting to be written on "Devastating Inflations Around the World." But -- somehow -- this little book on Fiat Money in France is clasped to the chests of many conservatives.

Since the book is, in effect, an argument for the gold standard, I must say that I would find it much more interesting if it forthrightly argued the merits and demerits of the gold standard, rather than simply telling the tale of monetary collapse in revolutionary France. I suspect that the gold standard is not a very good idea, since -- to the best of my knowledge -- no country in the world supports it. The general argument is simple: gold is simply a commodity, like cotton, oil, or oats. Why should we tie the nation's currency to something like one single commodity? If huge gold reserves are discovered in Lower Slobovia, should THAT have any impact at all on the U.S. dollar, or the British pound, or any currency at all?

The obvious answer is NO. And the prevailing situation worldwide is that all countries issue "FIAT MONEY." The currency is not tied to any particular commodity, but to a market basket of all the goods and services produced by that country. If you have ten thousand U.S. dollars, you can buy quite a chunk of American goods and services -- including gold, if you're in the mood for some dead "store of value."

That's the key issue: all these "fiat" currencies are instantly convertible into gold, or silver, or rubies, or kilowatts. They just are not TIED to the value of any particular commodity.

The system works fine. You just have to watch out for idiots like Jimmy Carter, who come to high office with no knowledge whatsoever, and proceed to increase the money supply until inflation reaches 13% and interest rates hit 20%.

5 out of 5 stars Want to be ahead of our future?.......2001-02-24

The book is about the financial trouble that fiat (e.g.,paper) money created in France during the revolutionary years. It also states clearly that the people didn't learn enough from a lesson they had 70 years early.

If you read this historical account you will very often wonder: 'Hey sounds familiar to me...'. Too bad - or?

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating explanation of the runaway inflation in France.......1999-07-01

Fiat Money Inflation in France is as much about irrational human behavior as it is about financial crises and runaway inflation. White describes a dissillusioned public who, under the influence of increasingly self-serving public officials and orators, accepted more and more assignant printings even though the perils of such printings had been documented throughout history and were then blatantly obvious right before there eyes.

White presented this analysis of the runaway inflation in France to dissuade the US Government of printing its own paper money. He was successful.

      A book worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars A story about debt that seems to chronicle events today.......1998-04-16

A clear presentation of a governments desparate move using cheap inflated paper money to pay off old debts and its effects on france around 1790. This is not a dynamic novel, but mind bombs go off as the author hits the chain of events that occurred when money is inflated, and is backed only by only a promise to pay the debt it represents. The French find themselves mired in a cycle of ever increasing difficulty to pay that debt off. Although it is not a novel and at times a bit dry, you will definitely be talking to your friends and family about what this author has to say and comparing it to what you see happening now.

                        Book Description

This invaluable book is an introduction to macroeconomic theory and policy. It provides the background of numerous issues that are of current importance. Although its primary purpose is to serve as a resource for undergraduates, it will also be useful to other readers. Despite being an introduction to the subject, its approach is not superficial, and complex issues are not ignored. Theory is related to practical issues. Particular attention is devoted to open-economy theory and the international constraints on the domestic economy. As is usual in economic matters, the conclusions are frequently tentative. Economic theory does not always provide answers. It does, however, encourage people to ask useful questions. And that is one of the aims of this book.

She is friendly, funny and positive. Somehow, even when she tells stories about the pitfalls of the industry, it comes across in an optimistic, positive way.

It's also a practical, well written, easy-to-read book that covers most of the things you'll run into in your musical life. It doesn't try and cover everything in depth, because it can't. It's a good, practical guide with some step-by-step instructions as well as overviews of situations you're likely to encounter and how to best deal with them. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for serious musicians!.......2003-07-07

The books subtitle "A Practical Guide for Musicians" sums up the work perfectly. This is a well-written and well thought out book by someone who has obviously been a working musician for many years.

I particularly enjoyed the step-by-step approach sprinkled liberally with excellent stories and anecdotes. This book is an excellent choice for anyone aspiring to make his or her living in the highly competitive field of music.

                          Book Description

More than any other single characteristic, aridity defines the American West. Water scarcity and its biologically critical function have also molded the regional literature of the region. Using novels by Barbara Kingsolver, Edward Abbey, John Steinbeck and Mary Austin, Dripping Dry combines literary analysis with environmental criticism to demonstrate how the myths that have pervaded the regional literature of the West have interacted with the myths that have shaped water policy throughout the twentieth century.
The four works selected (Animal Dreams, The Monkey Wrench Gang, The Grapes of Wrath, and The Ford) present a composite portrait of reclamation, which the author argues is one of the most important cultural and ecological phenomena in the nation's history. The tensions and contradictions presented by the novels underscore the compelling need for an ecocritique of the relationship between literature and politics. David N. Cassuto deciphers the myths of reclamation and restoration and presents a third alternative--sustainability--in their stead. The challenge is a large one, because of the size and complexity of the region and because nature continues to evolve and create itself, a process involving language, ideology, and the land.
The book is designed to be an interdisciplinary contribution both to the emerging field of literature and the environment, as well as to environmental studies. It will be welcomed by scholars as well as general readers interested in new approaches to literature and environmental issues, and by those interested in the geography and literature of the western United States.
David N. Cassuto, formerly of the English Department of the University of Missouri-Rolla, is a practicing attorney in San Francisco, specializing in environmental issues.

Dripping Dry by David Cassuto is a 'must read' for anyone with an interest in in the hydrology of the arid West. Cassuto eloquently examines the history and literature of the reclamation movement, the development of the restoration movement, and the need to develop an alternative: sustainability. He discusses four books concerned with the history of water in the West and the links between the literature and the politics of water (Mary Austin's The Ford, John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, Edward Abbey's The Monkey Wrench Gang, and Barbara Kingsolver's Animal Dreams. In his last chapter, titled Imagining Sustainability, he expands on his vision of the possibilities of sustainability as a workable environmental approach. His vision is fresh and challenging.

If you love the T.V. show Candid Camera as much as I do you'll love this book. It's amazing the preparation and work it took to put a show like that on the air for more than 30 years.I especially enjoyed the behind the scenes info and all the things that always seemed to go wrong. Mr. Funt's personal life is covered in great detail and I found that almost as interesting as the show, sometimes even more. If you're looking for a book to entertain you and make you laugh, this is it !

5 out of 5 stars An Internet business classic.......2003-08-24

While many of the references in this book are certainly somewhat dated (originally published in '97 - a lot has happened on the Internet since then), The Geek's Guide is still a bulls eye, on-target business guide for web designers, especially those just getting started. If you're a new web designer or web programmer you'll quickly learn what you need to know to succeed.

The fact that it was written before the dotbomb era means that you're getting solid advice free of the bubble hype that crashed the stock market and put almost every dot com company out of business - and left many self employed web designers scrambling to find paying clients.

I wouldn't worry too much about the fact that you won't even find the phrase "business model" in the book (at least I couldn't find it.) Most internet business models (except of course, good old Amazon!) turned out to be either illegal stock frauds run by con artists or the same as legitimate old fashioned bricks and mortar business models. And we all know that today, it is the bricks and mortar companies that have the most work and the most money for web designers.

So I say, grab this book now, even if you can only get a used copy.

                          1 out of 5 stars Doctored reviews........2002-09-29

Most of these reviews are frankly doctored. This book is not nearly a 5-star book...its tenets are largely rehashed and repackaged "standard" business wisdom, much of which becomes heavily diluted (at best) when dealing with e-business models. It also does not offer any true insights on the uniqueness of Internet-oriented business (and which most of us have found out the hard way, if not at least partially by common sense), let alone any "definitive blueprint" for succeeeding in designing and running one. It's all just fluff.

Do yourself a favor and pass this book by; there's a plethora of consulting, design, and internet development-oriented books that will fill the bill several times better than this one purports to. Review doctoring is nothing new to most experienced Internet consumers now; and this listing falls so obviously in that category that it's frankly embarrassing (and disgusting). But you don't have to believe me...if nothing else, buying this book will at least get you a "funny cover" with a t-shirt-worthy geek icon (ahem), if not the info you seek.

                          Pass.

5 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive, very thorough.......1999-04-17

With the Geek's Guide, Schmidt proves to the world that he has the'write' stuff. Schmidt has a knack for focusing on the most important aspects of any topic.

In terms of content, this book is jam packed with highly tailored and specific information crucial to sustaining a successful and profitable web development business. Although the book's focus is on web development business start-ups, anyone who is looking to strike out on their own in any field would find this book useful. Furthermore, potential clients of web development firms may find much of the information in the book useful when dealing with internet businesses and negotiating the creation of their own site.

The writing style of the book is very clear and concise and Schmidt leaves no room for misunderstanding in his prose. There is absolutely no internet hype or marketing spin in this book, nor are you treated to a dry, textbook or computer manual treatment of how to run a business. Personally, I found Schmidt's geek humor (there is one remark at the end of each chapter) to be well, in a word, geeky.

From an organizational standpoint, Schmidt gets you in the right frame of mind to run your own business by the end of the first chapter. Whereas most home-business books would devote all of their chapters to Freudian self-analysis (ridiculous intropspective and self-assessment questions), finding a good location for a business, and choosing the best form of business, Schmidt takes you through all of that in one balanced chapter. You will also get some very good ideas on how to build a good, winning, effective, and professional team.

His second chapter tells you in brutal realism just how your customers will look at you, and how you should carry yourself around them (still another chapter tells you exactly how to deal with your client's misconceptions and false expectations of the internet to your advantage). Four more chapters are devoted to making that all important, life-sustaining sale- from finding customers, planning and making the sales pitch, closing the sale and ultimately to writing up a contract. He wraps up the book with a chapter on growing the business and attaches a modest business plan in an appendix.

Schmidt earns my respect because he tells you upfront to obtain good legal and accounting help long before you launch your venture. Yet, the real value in this book is the way Schmidt lays out setting your rates and making certain that you get paid in two understandable chapters. If you are looking to get on the web with your own business in a big way, forget all of those other books and start reading this one today!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE for the entrepreneur!!.......1999-02-20

This book is very comprehensive and touches on points of business that the creative artist ignores.....The tips on marketing/advertising are invaluable!! The 'cold-call' concept is elevated to reality in this book. Many designers/web developers do not have a clue to expand business beyond the ol' word-of mouth....This book makes networking an attainable goal! Another asset is the readability of this book. I read it cover-to-cover in about 2 days. You do not have to have a degree in marketing or accounting to grasp the concepts. It is about time that someone came up with a 'Business' book from a marketing perspective! I am so glad that I found this book.....before it was too late!!!
