The legend on a nautical chart is not enough.......2007-06-13

As a newbie to reading charts I soon realized that much of the information displayed on a nautical chart is difficult or imposable to decode without some reference outside of the chart itself.

This book does a beautiful job of explaining all the mysterious symbols and conventions. It also has a great introduction that puts chart creation and interpretation into a practical, real-world perspective. I would consider this book to be a vital part of any vessel's safety equipment.

This book was invaluable to me on my last sail around the bottom of South America. I remember one night when the winds were blowing strong and water was splashing everywhere, I feared my crew of scallywags would start a mutiny and leave me stranded on a deserted island near Tierra del Fuego because I was totally lost. Thank goodness I had this book! I was able to nagivate the ship safely through the Strait of Magellan and back up to Brazil... more towards the equador. I have since given up the adventures of a ship's captain and instead I am enjoying the quieter satisfactions of life in selling carpet remnants door to door. But if it weren't for this invaluable book there is no telling where Polly and I might be right now. Thank you Nigel Calder!

"What does 'rky' mean? Oops!".......2006-07-30

Since the current U.S. Administration saw fit to cease publication of CHART NO. 1, the government's own guide to reading maritime maps, back in 2000 (maybe they figured Dubai might pick up the slack around our harbors), HOW TO READ A NAUTICAL CHART is an absolutely crucial educational volume for those of us new to reading charts.

It's all here. Nigel Calder does a splendid job of taking the esoterica of chart symbolism and language and turning it into something any boater can understand in everyday terms. He also does a fine job delineating the differences between harbor charts, large area charts, GPS readings and so on, all of which have their own internal but non-complimentary logic.

If you leave the dock, knowledge of and familiarity with charts can avoid costly errors, save your boat, and literally save your life. HOW TO READ A NAUTICAL CHART is a reference you must have.

Preaching for the converted.......2005-11-09

The election of Ignacio Lula da Silva as Brazilian president in October 2004 was cheered in Brazil and abroad. In Brazil there was finally hope of social change. Outside Brazil Lula's rags to riches story, combined with the uncertain behaviour of the financial markets should he be elected, led to special interest.

On the wave of optimism following Lula's comfortable second round victory, Sue Branford and Bernardo Kucinsky with help from Hilary Wainwright wrote this book about Lula and his workers' party (Partido dos Trabalhadores, PT). All three of the writers are firmly left wing and start from the assumption that PT is different and better than all other political parties, making a critical analysis impossible.

Each writer contributes his own chapter, resulting in a collection of articles and not a coherent book. The first chapter tells the story of the PT from its origins in the mass strikes in the Sao Paolo area in the late seventies to the 2002 elections. The second chapter starts in Caétes with Lula's humble origins and joins the PT story when Lula becomes the undisputed leader of the Sao Paolo strikes. The most interesting chapter covers the economic developments in Brazil in the 1990's, in which the IMF and the international banks are the villains. In the last chapter Hillary Wainwright visits Porto Alegre to see the system the ruling PT has established to listen to the wishes of its citizens.

The book also contains profiles of emblematic PT members like Marina who first went to school aged 16 and now is Minister of the Environment and black favela dweller Benedita de Silva. People like this and Lula himself are the PT's best claim to uniqueness.

Two years after his victory it's clear that real change is difficult to accomplish. Lula himself admitted Any profound change is not easy in our country. And the PT is behaving more and more like the other Brazilian political parties.

Biased and Under-researched.......2003-03-24

At 109 pages, this book never promises to be more than a quickie overview of Lula da Silva and Brazil's Workers' Party (PT), and it is useful in providing a bit of background for those looking to learn more about Lula, who was elected Brazil's president in October 2002. But it suffers from serious deficiencies.

First, it provides no deep analysis, even of seminal events in the life of Lula and the development of the PT party. Key events are just mentioned in passing, sort of a chronological narrative, but never placed into context. For example, the death of Lula's first wife in childbirth in 1970, considered crucial to his views on public health care is noted in one sentence. His current wife is named, but her key role in Lula's life is never described. Similarly, there is not a single mention of Jose Dirceu, a Sao Paulo revolutionary turned politician who emerged as the PT's savviest politician and is now Lula's most trusted advisor. There is no discussion about the internal debates in the labor movement that led up to the founding of the PT in 1980. The assessment of President Fernando Collor's political problems is head-shakingly weak: "Collor it seemed, had alienated the traditional centers of power and patronage."

The second deficiency is the book's overt leftist agenda. That's fine, we might suppose, nothing wrong with an author having an axe to grind. The problem is that the leftist propaganda here gets in the way of accuracy. Over and over we learn about the perfidious Brazilian right (sometimes emphasized by spelling it "Right") and its links to the press and other forces aligned against the PT good guys. This is especially grating when it comes to the 1994 elections. We read several strange diatribes blaming neoliberalism (and even "USA fashions") for Fernando Henrique Cardoso's come from behind victory over Lula. The author seems to believe that Lula deserved to be elected, but that the sneaky Cardoso used a tricky political strategy to win. Similarly, the Brazilian press ("Few ordinary Brazilian knew what the word 'scruples' meant, and the mass media were not about to enlighten them.") and conservative evangelicals ("[evangelicals] set up self-help networks just as the Muslim fundamentalists do.") come in for a beating because they do not support the PT.

The Worker's Party of Brazil(the partidos dos trabalhadores -PT) is one of the political organisations that has demonstrated the capacity for the Left to renovate its politics. The very success of the party created a opposition to the thought that the Left had entered in retreat since the fall of the Soviet Union or due to the crisis of the welfare state. The key event that attention to the party was the presidential election of 1989, when its main leader _ Luis Inacio Da Silv(` Lula') almost won election with 47 percent of the vote. The slogan of the 1989 presidential election is the title of the book - `Without Fear of Being Happy' (Sem medo de ser feliz).

The authors go into the formation of the party and how it brought together distinct social movements activists and leftist tendencies within the party. Sader and Silverstein take back to the metal workers' strike in 1978-79, where discussion initiated about the need for a political party of the workers. From there, the party went on struggling with the institutional road and trying to accommodate its radical aim with the limits of the state institutional structures. The author devotes a chapter to the rural link of the party, which it is important to demonstrate how the party is not a party of urban workers. The authors also go into the problems that the party faced with its municipal administrations, especially in face of the internal diversity. The book also includes an interview with Lula. This is a good introductory book on the Latin American left that any student or person interested on the area would enjoy reading.

Hard to follow?.......2003-02-14

Another customer said this book was a piece of trash and hard to follow. Maybe he/she was referring to a different book? Basic knowledge of notation is helpful to know before hand, but this book is useful to anyone who wants to learn to play the pan flute.

This book was basically a piece of trash, never in my life have I read such garbage. Also in my 58 years of life I have never been lulled to sleep quicker by any other piece of literature.

Glaring errors abound, both technical and grammatical.......2003-12-22

I went through this text chapter by chapter. I worked it fully as part of an A+ curriculum at a Career Technical School, including accompanying workbooks, labs and online testing through Cisco's Net Academy. Therefore, I believe I'm very qualified to give it a worthy review. So here goes...

I'll start off with the good stuff. The book did prepare me for the A+ certification tests; though I'm glad my school program didn't expect it to carry the educational burden all on its own. The Cisco text was all that was offered for the hardware portion (it's a balance of hardware and software information). In addition, our class worked a two book set from ElementK, which was excellent.

Now back on track: I feel that the Cisco program is headed for providing a fine tutorial for computer geeks to be. In my opinion it presented important knowledge in good order, understandable language and context. It's got potential.

The problem is that it appears to be a *very* rough draft that was rushed out to market and never edited again. It is stacked to the brim with miscaptioned images, confusing sentences, tested or reviewed information that's never covered in the chapter being quizzed. There are plain technical screw-ups where incorrect and sometimes dangerous information is given. In short, I'm very glad I came into it having a comfortable relationship with PCs, because, otherwise, I might have damaged something along the way, or burned the book as a sacrifice to the gods of better editing.

Don't give Cisco your money. They're trying to pawn an alpha test off on you as a functional product.

Cisco lends a helping hand to the new folks of the IT world........2003-06-25

At first glance, I was a little shocked to see Cisco Press publish a book titled,
I.T. Essentials 1: PC Hardware and Software Companion Guide. After all, this is a company in which its name is synonymous with routers and switches. However, this book is intended for those folks who are just starting out in the I.T. world and those of who are attending an Authorized Cisco Network Academy. That does not mean that you have to be a student of an Academy to grasp the practices and concepts packed in this guide.

This book was designed for individuals who want to understand the workings of a computer, both hardware and software. I.T. Essentials 1 does a great job in covering the basics of computers while teaching you how to prevent, maintain, and troubleshoot both hardware and software issues. The companion guide is laid out in the normal Cisco Press fashion we have grown accustom to - starting out with the chapter objectives and ending with a chapter summary and "Check Your Understanding" review questions.

As expected, I.T. Essentials 1 is packed with screenshots, figures, and diagrams to help illustrate the information clearly. For those of you who wish to pursue their A+ certification, this book will not disappoint you. All thirteen chapters are dedicated to help you achieve your CompTIA A+ certification.

The accompanied CD-ROM contains three test engines as well as interactive labs, videos, and PhotoZooms. For individuals studying for the CompTIA A+ exam, supplemental material includes a certification map that correspond the books chapters to the A+ exam objectives.

One thing I did find disappointing with the book was the organization, you're the lack there of. The chapters appear to be in no particular order. I found myself jumping around from one topic to the next and then back again. However, this would hardly be a reason not to purchase this book.
