Book Description
Mayhem and violence rule in this collection of issues one through seven of Jhonen Vasquez's Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, as well as material seen before only in Carpe Noctem magazine. Dark and disturbingly funny, JTHM follows the adventures of Johnny (you can call him Nny), who lives with a pair of styrofoam doughboys that encourage his madness, a wall that constantly needs a fresh coat of blood, and--oh, yeah--his victims in various states of torture. Join Nny as he frightens the little boy next door (Todd, known to fans of Vasquez's work as Squee), thirsts for Cherry Brain Freezies, attempts suicide, draws Happy Noodle Boy, and tries to uncover the meaning of his homicidal existence.

JTHM.......2007-08-24
VERY FUNNY LIGHT READING IN THE VERY DARK ZONE,IF YOU LIKE OVER THE TOP GORE THIS BOOKS FOR YOU!!
Insanity and Murder are Funny.......2006-11-26
Well actually, they really aren't, but after reading JTHM you might think they are. Jhonen Vasquez has an amazing talent; he is capable of making the most disturbing things laugh-out-loud hilarious. For this I wish to give JTHM Director's Cut a 5/5, but I cannot. But before I explain why, let me attempt to explain the meaning behind Jhonen's madness. Naturally, this is merely _my_ interpretation of his work.
JTHM is an attack (and a very violent one at that) on normalcy through the use of satire and parody with disturbing, dark themes. Due to the dark themes and disturbing content, this work could be labeled as "gothic" (and often is), but that would be rather insulting. Ironically, "goths" tend to adore the disturbing and the dark simply because it is not "normal," but they end up carving a very specific mold of normalcy out for their own clique. "If you don't fit a certain image, you're not goth and you're not one of US," a goth might say. JTHM is not only an attack on what MOST of us would consider normal, but also an attack on what GOTHS consider normal. It is an attack on all those arrogant people out there who deliberately exclude others because they don't fit in with their own definition of what normal is.
This theme pervades the entire series, from when Johnny is brutally torturing bullies for making fun of him for what he wears, to the little comments JV sometimes scratches in at the corners of his panels. But, it is not JV's attack on normalcy that is the most interesting aspect of JTHM, it is the contradictions. On the one hand, much of this comic book is rather demented and disgusting, but at the same time the book is hilarious--pulling the reader in two different directions at once. Also, sometimes there are comic strips that are completely pointless and filled with excessive (and unnecessary) violence, while there are others that have Johnny going on thought-provoking philosophical ramblings. This tension from pulling the reader back and forth (between violence and humor, and between pointlessness and meaning) is so instense that if you try to read too much at once you'll either sweat excessively, vomit profusely, or pass out from lack of oxygen because you're laughing so hard (or a combination of all three). I suggest reading in small dosages, you've been warned :)
This actually brings me to one of my only complaints. The JTHM series once featured "Meanwhiles" which are mini comic strips whose sole purpose is simply a brief, funny intermission between the JTHM series. The lack of meanwhiles lowers the value of the book (since they are really funny). But, the Meanwhiles also served as a means to break up the tension in the Johnny series. Since JTHM is so intense, the random and so often silly nature of the Meanwhile comic strips served as a pleasant deviation, and the lack of these pleasant little breaks means it's much more difficult to read JTHM in longer bursts.
My only other complaint is in the sturdiness of the actual book itself. I've only read through JTHM a few times, but already pages are falling out all over the place. I feel kind of bad negating a star primarily because of this reason (since it is not Jhonen's fault), but pages falling out really does detract from the overall experience.
Despite the lack of Meanwhiles and the overall flimsyness of the book itself, this is a solid purchase. Unless you're too easily offended or puke all over the place at the sight of blood, this graphic novel should not disappoint. Highly recommended!!!
The darkest, goriest, most awesome story ever!.......2006-11-05
I was introduced to this by my crazy friend, and I love it. Jhonen Vasquez has a very dark sense of humor, and has very comedic ways of showing someone kill people. I would HIGHLY suggest that one peeks into the book (click "Search inside this book") and read a couple of pages. In all honesty, though, if you don't like the few pages that are shown through Amazon, then you probably will not like the book. I think that the artwork is extremly well done, but it might not hold the interest of certain "normal" people.
Amazing Book.......2006-09-07
For anyone thinking of buying this book, the title explains the content: Johnny is a homicidal maniac. And this isn't an 80's horror film kind of homicidal maniac (one who likes to kill whislt in silhouette), oh no; the tortures and murders are shown in detail. The art work is very different compared to pretty much any other art work you'll find. Jhonen's use of skinny-as-hell characters and geometric drawings make this truly unique. Some may not like it, but that's a personal preferance.
That aside.
The story is non-linear in its own way (let's get one thing straight: it's not Tarentino non-linear), with different events taking place that can pretty much be interchanged with themselves (until part five), which gives the reader a simular sense of Johnny's psychosis. The dialouge is well crafted, logical (irony!) and often philisophical. If you're an intellectual, you'll thouroughly enjoy what the book has to offer...if you can manage some gore.
Also, the Happy Noodle Boy one-page segments are kept in this "Director's Cut" edition. These I found to be hilarious in their own, beyond random way. Seriously, these things are extremely random. Basically, it follows Happy Noodle Boy throughout a day in his life, which is often filled with swearing, yelling at people and usually ends with Noodle Boy getting shot.
In all, this is a great book and I highly suggest you pick up a copy. I find it very hard to believe anybody could whole-heartedly dislike this book.

Book Description
In this monograph, Gordon Tullock synthesizes many of his original ideas to develop a systematic theory of exchange in political markets that identifies with such exchange serious weaknesses in the form of externalities, rational ignorance, rent-seeking and other transaction costs. Since these political market failures correspond to in form and are more insidious in nature than the costs typically ascribed to ordinary markets, this monograph succeeds in re-establishing the strong presumption against resorting to politics originally argued by Adam Smith in his 1776 masterpiece The Wealth of Nations. The monograph is essential reading for anyone who is interested in the appropriate role of the state in twenty-first century market economies. The monograph offers a refreshing free market perspective to counter-balance the interventionist predilictions of most modern neo-classical economists.
Book Description
Small, well appointed future. Semi detached.
If the end of the world is nigh, then surely it’s only sensible to make alternative arrangements. Certainly the Earth has its good points, but what most people need is something smaller and more manageable. Of course there are those who say that’s planetary treason, but who cares what the weirdos and terrorists think? Not Nathan. All he cares is that his movie gets made and that’s there’s somebody left to see it.
In marketing terms the end of the world will be very big. Anyone trying to save it should remember that.

Best I've Read In A Long Time.......2006-02-28
This is without a doubt one of the best books that I have read in a long time- even I enjoyed the ending. The story takes place in the foreseeable future, sometime during our lifetime. The world is finally coming to an end through human stupidity, and people are bored with hearing of it, waiting impatiently for it to take its final breath so they can begin the Rat Run. Plastic Tolstoy is running eighty percent of the world media; Nathan has a dangerous script that preaches the truth; Max is a super celebrity who gets and erection at the thought of his own performances; Thor is the 'last sane man' on the planet; Rosalie is a greenie on a mission to save the world. Claustropheres (self contained geodesic domes) are popping up all over the world, perhaps the only answer to the survival of an eco-Armageddon- or perhaps it is traitorous to the earth, accepting the world is dying and not doing anything about it. On one hand they present a survival of the species, self-preservation; on the other their creation is destructive. Would you buy one? Or after much debating would you forego this luxury? And what could you afford?
I had to admit, sadly, right at the beginning that I would have been one of the first to purchase a Claustrophere had I the money, because I am a dooms-sayer, the end of the world is always nigh.
Ben Elton is entertaining, often eliciting random giggles from me at the most inappropriate moments- you wouldn't believe the looks that you get when you are sitting quietly at the bus stop reading then sudden burst into spontaneous laughter. He expresses things that I have often thought in such a poignant way that I don't feel so crazy.
His style is a little haphazard, and British. I found the chapters within chapters easy to read, enticing even.
We should all know that I can't read a book without guessing the ending a few pages into the book, sometimes even before I start reading, and this was no different- but I wasn't at all disappointed. I ENJOYED THE ENDING. It made sense; it was all so logical, right and amusing. He made his point.
Disappointingly I would probably still build a fall out shelter or buy my own Claustrophere, all the while attempting to better the environment, but that is just because I am crazy.
Good, but not his best work.......2004-04-28
This book is a good read, but don't expect the brilliance of Ben Elton's earlier work. The plot is not too sophisticated and the book lacks the humor I had come to expect from Ben Elton.
The book is a must however for anybody remotely interested in marketing.
A Piece of Green.......2001-04-02
Ben Elton is a comedian. He is also a green who cares about the planet. He does not care much about the pretence of actors, actresses and the like. This is why his books are witty sharp observations on life. His heroes and heroines are not rich, brain boxes, they are ordinary like you and me. This is the attractiveness of the books, your cheering yourself on. A meglamaniac has marketed a manafactured lifestyle inside individual biospheres. Everyone is buying them as the end of the world is coming. Isn't it ? The more he sells the more he needs the end of the world to keep on happening. But some people are screwing with his profits by trying to save the planet. Read it and cheer you and me as we try and save the world

In this Novel, Ben Elton, a comedian and author well known in Britian and Australia, continues to use ecological problems as a theme in his writing.
The book revolves around an ecological protest group, and the company they oppose, which sells a self supporing personal habitat, known as an Eden.

Book Description.......2004-05-29
Set on the North Devon coast of England and in fashionable London during the period of the French Revolution, THE OTHER EDEN is the first novel to tell the saga of the great Eden family, the romantic, intensely dramatic events when the Edens and Lockes made their fateful union.
The memory of her torment would haunt Marianne Locke for years. At the command of Lord Thomas Eden, she had suffered the agony and humiliation of a public lashing for spurning his lustful advances. Sent to London to be with her sister Jane to regain her health and spirit, Marianne finds a still stormier trial awaits her. For Jane's heart bears no love for Marianne, only a bitter envy of the captivating girl whose beauty and style eclipse her own. And Lord Eden's arrival in London is the perfect opportunity for Jane's malevolence. Still struck by Marianne's charms, Lord Eden now has an ally in obtaining Marianne for his pleasure.
THIS OTHER EDEN is a historical romance written with great distinction, framed by the French Revolution, by Lord Eden's dangerous smuggling ring, two marriage ceremonies, the birth of a legitimate and an illegitimate heir. It is the tumultuous union of Thomas and Marianne that begins the lineage of the Lockes and the Edens. It is a lineage destined to produce strong individuals who will make their mark on history.

Very Thought Provoking romantic delicious trash. My first venture into this author.

From the first words on page one, this book had me hooked to the very last page. Superbly written from the horrific, graphic details of a young girl's painful and humilitating ordeal to the beautiful, natural landscape of the land in which this story takes place.

Great Book on learning ... Da' Scorpions!!!.......2007-01-13
I am a BIG Mathias Jabs fan, and this book gives a wonderful breakdown of his lead guitar style that you just can't learn from tabs alone! If you really want to learn these songs inside and out, you have to at least understand how to read traditional notated music; at least understand how to read rhythm in traditional notation. This book gives both!
A good investment!.......2006-07-10
Another excellent book from Hal Leonard. A nice collection of 14 classics from the legendary band. Accurate note for note transcriptions of all the guitars heard in the recorded tracks in both standard and Tab notation.

Book Description
Toward a Theater of the Oppressed is an engaging study of the dramaturgy of contemporary British playwright John Arden and the political implications of his work. Arden made his debut on the London stage in the wake of a powerful new wave of young, "angry" drama in England during the late 1950s. Javed Malick argues that in contrast to contemporaries like John Osborne, Harold Pinter, and Arnold Wesker, Arden offered a radically different approach to drama and theater, employing a long-neglected writing style that derived from pre-bourgeois popular traditions.
Malick situates Arden's dramaturgy in the wider context of the radical alternative tradition in Western drama, drawing connections to Brecht, Piscator, the radical playwrights of the 1960s. He then explores the formal structure, ideological implications, and historical significance of Arden's work, treating his stage plays as one dramaturgically coherent opus- from the early Waters of Babylon to his and Margaretta D'Arcy's ambitious trilogy, The Island of the Mighty. Finally, he discusses the last phase of Arden and D'Arcy's political and artistic development, which led them to turn their backs on the professional theater circuit. He argues that Arden's rejection of the institutional stage was the logical outcome of his persistent search for alternative forms of political theater.
Toward a Theater of the Oppressed will be invaluable reading for those interested in modern drama, political theater, and popular performance, as well as students of contemporary British drama.
Javed Malick is Reader in English, Khalsa College, University of Delhi, India.

Product Description
Religious programming has been on the airwaves since broadcasting began, but today it is one of the fastest growing categories in radio. This book examines the progression of Christian radio from its beginnings on tiny local stations (like WCAL from St. Olafs College in Minnesota) to its presence on network and satellite radio of today. The author notes the factors that brought Christian music into the mainstream and discusses how network policies and regulations affected the development of Christian radio. Also considered are the changing demographics that have contributed to the success of Christian broadcasting. Major Christian networks and their evangelical missions are discussed, along with such programs A Money Minute, Life on the Edge and Focus on the Family, which offer practical topical advice for todays Christian. The final chapter considers the future of Christian radio.

From the Margins to the Mainstream.......2006-05-29
Most books concerning Christian broadcasters are either Christian authors heralding its triumphs or critics' warnings of barbarians at the gates of the secular city. Bob Lochte's Christian Radio falls into neither category. Lochte, a professor of communications, has noticed some of his students graduating to work into what once would have been considered a dead-end segment of the market but now is one of the fastest growing fields in the media. In this careful examination of the history of Christian broadcasting and the contemporary Christian broadcasting field, he suceeeds in explaining how this industry grew from a marginalized regional concern to a mainstream broadcasting force.
Beginning with the fledgling efforts of Christian radio pioneers, he describes how the Christian presence on mainstream radio - barring a few more mainstream representatives - was gadually eliminated by commercial concerns and policies put forth by the major radio networks. Enterprising evangelists responded by beginning to patch together their own "networks" from airtime purchased on independent stations.
The advent of completely Christian radio formats is covered extensively including one of the more unique cases with Aimee Semple McPherson and her Church of the Foursquare Gospel founding its own station - KFSG in Los Angeles. A flamboyant persoanlity and preaching style carried on to her services which Lochte describes as "pure theatre with staged reviews, outlandish costumes and skits, a full orchestra, and of course the star of the show, Aimee Semple McPherson, healing the sick and preaching the gospel." Apparently the showbiz theatrics of modern prosperity preachers and megachurches are not as "novel" and "groundbreaking" as they claim.
Lochte then concentrates on the rise of contemporary Christian music and the effect it has had on the industry. Many who would tune out services, sermons, or Christian information programs will listen to a Christian message cloaked in the latest stylings of pop, rock, or rap music. Of course, this whole concept of matching Christianity with contemporary secular musical styles is not without controversy and Lochte covers some of the issues raised within the Evangelical circles where it originated.
The remainder of the book is a survey of the contemporary scene. Lochte discusses noted Christian radio personalities, the wide array of Chrisitan radio formats, and the important ministries and broadcasting giants that have arisen in the Christian radio format such as Salem Communications.
Lochte restricts his comments mainly to these men and women as broadcasters and does not concern himself with their message or controversies surrounding their ministries. He is concerned here with Christian radio as a broadcasting phenomena and not with the message it conveys. Although the book is probably aimed more at those in the media, it contains no techincal jargon that would exlcude a general reader. Although a little dry reading at times, for its purpose as a look back and assessment of the current state of Christian radio, it is highly recommended.

A Good Introduction.......2006-01-26
This is a good introduction to working with Access 2003. It is introductory in nature and can be successfully used by those with no background at all. The instructions a very detailed and are given step by step. This process is so basic, that it often becomes annoying and prompts thoughts such as, "surely, they realize I can do THAT by now". Even though it is annoying, that is also part of the strength of this tutorial.
Another strength is its large, full color illustrations. They could even be called luxurious, especially when compared to the miniature black and white illustration which are so common but need an electron microscope to be of any use. Most steps are documented and the locations of needed buttons are usually highlighted. This is particularly helpful in a complex application like Access which contains a myriad of menus and buttons.
The examples almost always work as described. The only place I encountered any problem was towards the end when dealing with writing VBA code. There I did run into one glitch. I am still unsure whether it was my typing of an actual problem. Retyping code is notorious for these types of errors but I also noticed that in this one instance, the screens did not always exactly match the illustrations.
The examples build upon each other. Students use the same basic company level problem and keep building upon it. This reinforces earlier lessons.
This book has a few cons as well. There is no disk. It assumes that an instructor will hand out all needed files. This may work in a college but it did not work for me at home.
The book is weak on teaching actual database theory. It is mostly about how to use the program. Some topics are merely glossed over. Many to many relationships were only mentioned in passing. On the plus side, however, just about every topic is at least touched upon.
This book was obviously designed to be used as a part of a formal class. I think it works extremely well in that situation. It was also fairly decent for self study.
Access 2003 Comprehensive Concepts and Techniques.......2005-10-09
We have been using this textbook for Database Management at Kaplan University. This is the most informative and well illustrated textbook I think I have ever seen. Every step, every new technique is clearly explained. This has made me fall in love with Database Management and Microsoft Access!! I have been going around my work offering to make databases for everybody I see!! This is absolutely 5 stars!!!!!!
