I don't think anyone could find a more economically price guide for movies, with such good coverage of: Directors, Actors, a synopsis of the storyline, and star rating system. I don't rent a movie without first checking out what Leonard Maltin has written about it. Highly recommend.

i used to buy this every year but i now buy the superior timeout guide.theres just too many mistakes on some of my favourite films.leonard maltin is way overated.for most hollywood films its fine but when it comes to international movies it struggles

I first came across the Leonard Maltin film books in the late 1970's--what a resource. Quick reviews with cast information. Other books have come and gone but Maltin remains. I purchased the oversized edition for the larger type. I find the book helpful for films that look interesting but that I have never heard of. This book avoids time wasters--or if you prefer, allows you to know that the film is a time waster. More concise and informative than Roger Ebert's book.

The living wage movement is considered by many to be the most interesting grassroots enterprise to emerge since the civil rights movement. Ten years after the first ordinance was passed in Baltimore, there are more than one hundred living wage ordinances on the books across the United States, and the movement continues to thrive and grow, despite increasing opposition. This book is not a simple celebration of the living wage movement, but a critical evaluation in which Stephanie Luce, a national expert on living wage campaigns, assesses the strengths and shortcomings of various campaigns and their resulting implementation.

Although many local governments have been convinced to pass living wage ordinances, the movement has had less success in ensuring that these ordinances are fully realized. Some cities have consistently enforced their ordinances after passage. In other communities implementation is weak or nonexistent, and thousands of workers do not benefit from laws designed to ensure that they are paid a living wage.

Luce provides in Fighting for a Living Wage the first serious examination of the reasons for implementation failure, as well as an analysis of the factors that lead to success. Luce argues that citizens can play a significant role in implementing and monitoring living wage policies, even where governments oppose the movement or are reluctant to enforce the laws in question. Luce finds that the nature of the campaign to formulate and pass policy can influence the likelihood of successful implementation. Surprisingly, the chances for thorough enforcement are greater in communities where living wage campaigns caused more, not less, conflict.

Good survey of the sprawling genre.......2005-09-03

This textbook is good overall and very suitable for college rock and roll courses.

Michael Campbell is the author of AND THE BEAT GOES ON, a textbook about the history of American Popular Music. This textbook focuses just on rock and roll.

The first few chapters cover the roots of rock n' roll: the basics of blues, boogie woogie, and other popular styles in the years after World War II. The authors spend a large chunk of pages on Rock's ascendance from 1964-1974 (about 170 pages). The period from 1974-1989, as a comparison, receives about 90 pages.

The book's strengths are their thoroughness of explanation and clarity of the text. While the textbook is certainly not exhaustive or complete (somebody always complains that THEIR FAVORITE band was overlooked), all the major styles and bands are discussed.
Campbell and Brody do a good job of placing each rock movement within its historical context and tracking the progression of rock through the mid-90s.

The pictures and diagrams can be helpful, especially to non-music majors. The key terms at the end of each chapter are basic, and the study questions are somewhat helpful.

One strong criticism (and certainly any R&R textbook will run into this) is its listening examples. Because these songs are still so popular, it is impossible to get all of the recordings discussed on one set of recordings. The discography at the back of the book shows that most of the songs discussed are on several anthology CDs, but there are many which have to be bought piecemeal. Once again, any textbook on rock will likely have this problem.

I think undergraduate professors should strongly consider this book for their courses, as it takes a straightforward approach to the subject.

Nice to learn about Rudy - but not nice TO him.......2005-06-23

Interviewer Jeff Herman asks Rudy Boesch scores and scores of questions, some of them tired and pre-planned, others tying things together. And Rudy answers them all as anyone who's heard him speak would expect him to - straight-forward, based on a long life of experience, with a great deal of simplicity, and without much consistency (especially on topics political and sociological).

But Herman's presentation is grandly stilted, presenting himself as more refined than Rudy (as if we couldn't already imagine that he probably was) and "clarifying" Rudy's answers even when they don't need it.

It's unlikely, for example, that Herman used "et al." (Latin for others; in the phrase "Washington, Jefferson, et al.", on p.135) in a question, but he prints that in the book, instead of printing the question as he probably asked it ("...and others"). Conversely, when Rudy mentions "The Mole", Herman sees fit (on p.40) to add in "[TV show]" even though the answer is clearly about TV shows, and even though the question includes the phrase "reality shows on TV".

Herman's comfortable asking the Vietnam-related question (on p.67) "Did the North have good soldiers?", but apparently needs to clarify Rudy's answer with a bracket: "They [the Vietcong] were worthy opponents." But if "the North" suffices as a reference to the political entity of northern Vietnam, then "They" suffices as a reference to "good soldiers". Herman's editing makes it look like Rudy is ambiguous or insufficient. He isn't.

He even gets some basic concepts wrong, such as (on the first page) saying Rudy is "well into his seventh decade". (Rudy's in his seventies, and so well into his *eighth* decade.)

Despite Herman's slant and ego, Survivor fanatics will enjoy spending a bit more time with Rudy. You won't be enlightened, and you won't learn much. (You probably already know that he was one of the first SEALs, and there's scant detail about that.) But it was a good quick read I kept in the bathroom and finished in three days over the course of short breaks.

Rudy endures questions and answers on just about everything.......2002-02-03

I picked up "The Book of Rudy: The Wit and Wisdom of Rudy Boesch" and immediately cringed. Here is a man who achieved a certain notoriety for being the most authentic member of the original "Survivor" show. Yes, there was the beloved curmudgeon aspect to how he was presented, but I thought it was his authenticity, the fact that you took the man at face value because you just were not going to find anything else underneath, that made him appealing. Ask Rudy Boesch what he thinks and you will get what he thinks. Take it or leave it. But when I saw this book I thought it was going to be one of those collections of quotations and aphorisms, which would strip the man down to mere words.

However, I was surprised to discover this was ot the case. What we have here is Rudy Boesch answering questions about basically every controversial topic that interviewers Jeff and Deborah Herman could come up with, from abortion to gun control and from Vietnam to George Bush, Jr. Some of the answers are brief, to the point, and probably surprising to anyone expecting standard conservative rhetoric (e.g., Rudy thinks abortion should be up to the woman). Others are more involved, evidencing that the man does not spout off about everything at the drop of the hat. He only talks in detail about things he has thought about it depth.

There is obviously some sort of agreement regarding the publication of books that Rudy Boesch signed when he did "Survivor," because the show is never mentioned, just the idea that we have seen Rudy of TV. A chapter on "Survival" is conspicuously barren of anything regarding living on an island in the South China Sea for a month. However, Rudy is here to talk about bigger and better things than some television show. I would have liked to have read more about Rudy's live in the SEALS, but you know the man is not going to talk about that, right? This one is quite simple: if you enjoyed listening to Rudy's abrasive comments on "Survivor," you will find more of the same but with considerably more depth and heart than what we say edited for television.

That's the Rudy I knew...........2001-10-27

As a staff member of NavSpecWarGroup back in '73, I ran across Rudy many times while he was at SEAL 2. He is EXACTLY like his book. A good guy and a good example for the young guys of today's SEAL Teams to follow. If young men today want an example to follow, they would be on the mark if they used him instead of a sports figure or movie actor.
