3 out of 5 stars IT'S OKAY.......2007-06-21

I have tried a couple of recipes out of this book and the spaghetti meat sauce was excellent. However, the layout of the book itself is terrible. It's a paperback book and I prefer cookbooks that will stay open on the counter such as spiral bound. I also like slick, glossy pages in cookbooks as they stay cleaner. It really bothers me that the size of crockpot needed for each recipe is not stated. Some cookbooks state which sizes are necessary. I just have to figure it out based on the number of servings, but I wish it were stated in the recipe. The center of this edition has some color pictures that are on glossy pages, but they are staring to fall out of the book. The book is not very well-made.

Of all my slow cooker cookbooks, this is the one that basically gathers dust on the shelf.

3 out of 5 stars Lousy size !.......2007-03-20

I bought this book because I couldn't find my original after moving. It's a great cookbook except for the size, it is a pocket book. WAY too small for a kitchen cook book. My fault for not looking at the discription closer, guess I will check out the used ones, maybe I can find a decent original. It rates 5 stars but I gave it 3 because of the size.

3 out of 5 stars Crockery Cookery.......2007-01-04

Was somewhat disappointed in this book. I had ordered it to replace one I previously had and it has been revised. Several of the recipes that were in it before are now gone. I also don't remember the print being so small.

5 out of 5 stars surprisingly great.......2006-03-03

I got this based on recs at another site. honestly, I was underimpressed when I read the recipes. I've been using a crockpot for several years and consider myself a relatively good cook without using recipes much...the recipes to me appeared to be very similar to what I already throw together. but...the minor changes have helped me to make the most delicious food...in fact, yesterday I made the brisket with picante sauce (I really didn't want to make it but had already purchased the ingredients) oh my gosh, it was delicious. I would highly recommend this everyone - even get it for people as a wedding gift. I am so glad I gave this a chance...

2 out of 5 stars You Will Learn Basic Crockpot Skills.......2006-01-23

Hoffman's recipes sound delicious, but in fact are often flavorless. If you use her recipes, you WILL learn slow cooking tecniques (stacking meat in the pot, thickening sauces, etc). But after 7 years of using this book, my notes on the recipes have a continual refrain: "Needs more pizzaz"; "Add vegetables"; "Flavors need more depth".

5 out of 5 stars ;My Crockery Bible.......2007-05-13

Love her crockery books. I made a Scandivian Pot Roast last night with little or no effort. It was delicious. I have enjoyed many recipes from this book and would recomend it to everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Very useful book for healthier slow cooking.......2006-04-27

For my fellow foodies that are thinking, "you have got to be kidding" please keep reading and keep an open mind. Even though my favorite cookbook is "The Professional Chef" by the CIA, I still use this one to assist me in determining timing and liquid proportions for making dinners without hovering around the kitchen.

If are a busy mom that wants to put a healthy meal on the table every night this book will become an indispensable addition to your library. The recipes were devised using standard supermarket ingredients but you can easily doctor them up if you wish, I do. Each recipe gives a nutritional breakdown including calories, carbohydrates, protein, total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium.

The recipe section is divided as follows:
1. Soups and Chili
2. Chicken
3. Turkey
4. Beef
5. Pork and Lamb
6. Wraps and Sandwiches
7. Beans and Grains
8. Vegetables
9. Desserts and Accompaniments

The most surprising recipe in this book for me was for a roasted chicken with rosemary and garlic, in the slow cooker. I must admit that I was dubious that this would work. However, it works fine, the chicken browns and cooking doesn't heat up the kitchen. If you want the chicken browner, slide it under the broiler for a few minutes before serving. This method works so well that once I taught it to a friend of mine she no longer buys the supermarket rotisserie chickens that she used to rely on.

The author has a nice method in this book that uses foil packet and vegetables that has come in very handy for me. After preparing one of the author's recipes I have used the method to make a lot of the dishes that I would have previously made in the oven in parchment.

There are a couple of nice factors that result from using a slow cooker that I find to be preferable to using the standard stove or oven methods:
1. you don't have to be home to cook.
2. you don't heat up your kitchen in the summer.
3. you can cook without adding extra fat making the meal healthier.
4. you don't release gas into your home (assuming you have a gas cook top and/or oven) increasing the indoor air pollution in your home.

If you want healthy meals for your family, and are not that familiar with the ins and outs of slow cooking, you will find this to be a useful book.

4 out of 5 stars Nice addition to a slow cooker library........2005-01-25

I've enjoyed all the recipes I've made from this cookbook so far. One nice thing about this cookbook is that it has lots of recipes for wraps, which you won't find in most slow-cooker cookbooks.

In response to some of the other reviews, I don't think this book is particularly "gourmet". I've always been able to find all the ingredients and most are not really that exotic.

The book avoids the typical "add a can of condensed cream of mushroom soup" for the most part, which is a nice change. Some of the recipes call for a thickener when it really should be optional; I prefer broth-y sauces to gravies. Omitting this step will save even more calories.

Overall, these are not extremely low in calories and fat, but you shouldn't need to eat big portions of them to feel satisfied, either.

2 out of 5 stars Healthy Crockery Cookery.......2003-05-08

Most of the recipes had long lists of ingredients. The recipes didn't sounded enticing. I love cookbooks but I returned this one!

2 out of 5 stars Not bad - but not what I hoped for........2002-10-28

I have only been "crocking" for a few years so I'm certainly still learning about what tastes good and what works etc.. I was hoping for more photos to go with the recipes, and more every day recipes, but did not really find those things. This is a good book for someone who has A LOT of different ingredients on hand. More of a gourmet cookbook and it just didn't suit my needs as a busy working single mom.

The book would be perfect for more sophiticated cooks who want to plan a snazzy romantic meal for two or an all adult dinner party.

2 out of 5 stars Crockery for the Elitist.......2001-02-19

Perhaps my title is a little strong, however I feel this book was designed for cooks proud of using the crock-pot for specialized meals. The recipes call for ingredients not on every grocery store shelf. This book is great if prize winning crock meals are something you want to tout @ mealtime. If I wanted to be boastful about my meals, I wouldn't be using a crock-pot! I wanted a cookbook for easy, quick, ordinary crock meals. I am searching to find a crock cookbook without the pomp and circumstance, one that is common, traditional, everyday. I would endorse this book if fancy crock cooking were your desire. It is terrific for that purpose.

5 out of 5 stars Highy recoomened, lots of variety, has nutrition info.......2000-01-31

I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to make delicious, easy to make meals without a lot of time & effort. Recipes include desserts, soups, vegetables & main meals. It is printed in blue ink with a few full-page color photos.

The book starts out with menu suggestions & crockery basics. Great tips for thickening sauces, browning & enhancing presentation are also included.

Conveniently, recipes are then arranged by cooking time from less than 6 hours to more than 10. I love that there are tips to lower fat content & that nutritional information is included for each recipe.

There is a lot of variety here including traditional favorites like beef stew & chicken soup as well as international delights such as tamale pie & Thai pork. There are also great dishes for entertaining such as bread pudding & Italian roll-ups.

4 out of 5 stars Great book!!!! Necessary for anyone with a croc-pot!!!!.......1999-04-28

As a single man that works hard, i found that a slow cooker is a great way to have good meals. This book is a MUST for anyone that uses a croc-pot.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2003-11-05

I also purchased my crockpot in order to make quick meals with a minimum of fuss as I have little to no time to cook during the week. I assumed that it would follow that crockpot recipies would be relatively simple and quick to complete, but not so with this book. The recipes required more time and effort that I was prepared to give. I never use this book.

5 out of 5 stars go, Mable, go!.......2002-11-24

Gee, did the other reviewer and I use the same cookbook? We have Mable's original Crockery Cookbook and now this one. In both, the recipes are easy to follow. Cheesecloth is easy to buy in the supermarket and we don't use trivets in the crockpot (canning rings do the job nicely, too). Both my wife and I take turns selecting a dish and do some prep work the night before (chopping vegetables, browning if need be). In the AM, it takes just a few minutes to take the ingredients out of the refrigerator and setting up the crockpot. The house smells heavenely when we come home. We use her recipes at least 3 times a week and have even made cakes and breads in the crockpot as well. A winner!

1 out of 5 stars Too much trouble.......2002-11-07

I read the reviews of Mabel Hoffman's cookbooks and bought them on the strength of those reviews. I'm sorry I did.

I use a crockpot to make my life simpler. Ms. Hoffman's recipes usually require either cheesecloth, a crockpot trivet, or both. Sometimes, you have to prepare the food before placing in the crockpot. The food may be marvelous, but as a working woman, I'm not going to do all these things.

I believe I copied out 3-5 recipes per each book of Ms. Hoffman's that I bought. If you enjoy fussy crockpot cooking, these may be the books for you.

                Book Description

This work examines the role money and debt play in our economy. It shows why we went from the gold standard to fiat money, why that led to increasing inflation up to 1980, and why inflation has receded since 1980. In addition, it explains how today's economic problems arose, why governments cannot solve those problems, and where those problems will lead us. Challenging conventional wisdom, the author suggests that high real interest rates in the 1980s reduced business' ability to profit by expanding productive capacity and reduced the attractiveness of borrowing for consumption. The resulting drive to buy assets instead, such as stocks and real estate, caused rapidly rising prices in those areas. The author foresees a depression resulting from these economic forces--one which governments will be unable to prevent. This work is unique for it neither espouses any theory nor uses inductive or deductive reasoning; rather, it observes. Its observations of how economic sectors, central banks, governments, business, and consumers can and do use money and debt are trenchant and alarming.

                      Book Description

An informative, tongue-in-cheek look at the Dutch and their wondrous ways. Written in a humorous style with a gentleman's touch, "Dear Henry" captures the quirky ways of the Dutch from a typically British viewpoint.

The book is a compilation of 24 letters—one a month over a two-year period—from a British expatriate in Holland (Uncle Brian) to his sheltered nephew (Henry), preparing Henry for his impending arrival in the Netherlands. Written with skill, insight, and a large dose of culture-shock wit, this book is a must-read for anyone with social ties to either or both countries.

I have personally witnessed the great nation of the Netherlands reduce a great Englishman to a quivering wreck. Make that two Englishmen, and two quivering wrecks.

So it was sort of a relief to see so many of my pet hates (pet peeves in US speak) splashed across the pages of this short but sweet book.

The mindless perkiness, the mandatory kissing rounds, the coffee culture, the national sport that is greed, mopeds, typical Dutch rudeness, and many more aspects of living in Nederland are therapeutically dealt with in the letters. If it had been me writing, I'd not have been half as friendly, or half as clever. It takes discipline not to tackle the subject of living in Holland with a proverbial sledgehammer.

Indeed, when a country brings one to remark that one would only go back there with enriched uranium, it's time for some damage control.

So rather than physically and gruesomely attack the next 16-year-old moped-riding, chain-smoking, opinionated, see-through-blond, overfed and overcaffeinated youth that crosses my path, by beating him with a wheel of aged Gouda, I will retreat to some private place with a cup of hot tea and my copy of 'Dear Henry.'

                      5 out of 5 stars Very Funny.......2003-01-03

I enjoyed reading the book tremendously. Brian's humour is in the great English tradition of geniuses like Ben Elton, Tom Sharpe and John Cleese. Not to mention Benny Hill. Oh, no sorry, I mean: don't mention Benny Hill. As to the ending, a touch of the surreal. Really, could it be, would it work? Could a real Englishman do what Henry did?

A must read for anyone who wants to enter the collective psyche of those two great peoples, the English and the ummm.... ummm... for anyone who wants to enter the psyche of those two strange peoples, the English and the Dutch.

It seems like people learning the mandolin often have experience in some other instrument and don't need as much assistance with the fundamentals. If you are a beginner to music, though, I think you'll get a lot of use out of this to get going with mandolins.

It is an under rated learning package, with the music book, CD, and a DVD. It is extremely basic stuff, but at a low price.

The songs selected are simple, unadorned numbers, but varied and plentiful. This makes for a gentle learning curve. People will be familiar with most of the old standards here which helps a beginner.

The interface of the DVD is a little clunky, geared towards following along with the book, but the instruction is adequate. The first half of the DVD demonstrates the rhythm portion of songs and the last half is melody. Unfortunately, the instructor only seems to show how to play either one or the other for each song, with the other part being played by somebody off camera.

But as I say, the first half of the DVD is generally concentrating on the rhythm and last half on melody. Instruction is down to the level of where to put which finger. There are over two dozen songs.

Many learning systems have excellent players on their demo dvds, but they show off their own skill more than teach. Slowing down and demonstrating the absolute basics, with simple, familiar songs is what a new mandolinist needs. There is also an audio CD you can pop in for more portable instruction.

This package is for the very beginner; at that it does a fine job at a very low price. Stick with it and you will be moving up to intermediate level quickly.

                      3 out of 5 stars Helpful, BUT!!!!.......2007-09-18

As a total absolute beginner and new to the mandolin I purchased this and found some of the information helpful, such as positioning to play the mandolin and proper technique for holding a pick. As far as the actually playing - couldn't follow the instructions - needing human instruction to really figure out what to do.

                      Book Description

That Was the Wild East presents critical insight into popular film culture and art house cinema in Germany from 1990-1999. It examines box-office hits and cult films, such as the "Trabi comedies" and unification farces, which delighted local and international audiences, but which have been granted scarce critical attention up to this point. The first detailed account of the representation of German unification on film to appear, either in English or German, this work provides valuable and engaging source material otherwise inaccessible to non-German readers.
In her focus on a range of "unification films," Leonie Naughton analyzes impressions of unification fostered in films from the East and West, along with the comic and tragic anxieties these films attribute to life in the "new" Germany. The ways in which German filmmakers represented unification throughout the 1990s are discussed with reference to a broad range of recent German films, and Naughton examines both divergent and convergent cinematic impressions of life in a recently unified Germany by 1990s filmmakers.
Those interested in film studies and film history, German history and culture, as well as German unification and recent developments in German cinema, will find this book especially appealing.
Leonie Naughton is a research associate, The University of Melbourne, Australia.

5 out of 5 stars A compelling and authoritative read.......2006-05-14

This is not only a compelling read for students of German cinema, but also for anyone with an interest in contemporary Germany or film history, as it explores the fascinating interrelationship between German media, cultural landscape and politics in an era of upheavals.

Given the lack of authoritative and comprehensive texts on German cinema in the light of the unification, I found this book both enlightening and indispensable for my studies.
Leonie Naughton gives a broad overview of the various trends in film and society, as well as an in-depth analysis of issues such as the stereotyped portrayal of East Germany in Western-backed productions, and the difficulties faced by East German media.

The writer bases her arguments upon close scrutiny of both well-known and obscure films which she colorfully evokes - one need not have seen many German films to grasp her thesis and enjoy her lively and eloquent survey.

4 out of 5 stars That was a wild book!.......2005-05-04

This book is so good - a really engrossing read.
I think That Was the Wild East Film Culture, Unification and the "New" Germany would be of value to anyone interested in the relationship between film, society and politics.
Naughton analyzes a broad range of German films released in the decade following unification, examining not only their structure and styles, but also their critical and public reception. The psychological, cultural and economic upheavals experienced by the East Germans also makes for fascinating reading, especially to someone like myself who always believed that "the unfortunate citizens" of the East were only too happy to have the Iron Curtain swept aside and be presented with the keys to the paradise of Capitalism.
This book is well written and researched and, as far as I can tell, is the only extensive English study to examine this period of German film history. I see that Thomas Elsaesser, Professor of German Film in Amsterdam, has praised the book's "impeccable scholarship' and "intrepid dedication." I am in complete agreement with him, and encourage everyone with an interest in this field (and even those who haven't) to grab a copy of this well written and engrossing book.

This book should be lauded for its systematic approach to post-unification film, an interesting subject indeed. If only there was system to the system. Naughton juggles definitions in order to make the material fit her thesis about the regressive tendencies of recent German cinema and occasionally does not even seem to realize that her own argumentation contradicts her thesis. The most disturbing aspects of the book are its stereotypical depiction of the East, its bewildering legends about life in East Germany and its blatant historical errors-none of which seems to have bothered the editors of the series in which the study appeared.
