Book Description
Apple says that Mac OS X 10.3 introduces 150 new features--but that's not really true. In fact, "Panther" includes many more than that. It's faster, more polished, and much more efficient. But it still comes without a manual. With 300,000 copies in print, the first two versions of this book became industry bestsellers. Now David Pogue brings his humor and expertise to this completely rewritten, greatly expanded edition. It covers:
-
Getting started. The early chapters demystify the Dock, windows, and the unfamiliar Mac OS X folder structure--an ideal introduction.
-
New technologies. Mac OS X 10.3 brings breakthroughs in window management (Expose, the Sidebar); security (File Vault, Secure Empty Trash); and productivity (faxing, Fast User Switching).
-
Bonus software. Panther comes with over 50 free programs--and this book gives you expertise in all of them. This beefed-up edition includes all-new mini-manuals on iMovie, iDVD, iPhoto, iChat AV, and Safari.
-
Basics of Unix. You can completely ignore Panther's Unix core. But if the command line intrigues you, this book offers a gentle introduction.
-
Finding familiar features. Two "Where'd It Go?" Dictionaries make it easy for Mac OS 9 and Windows refugees to look up a traditional feature--and find out where it went in Mac OS X 10.3.
As always, Mac OS X: The Missing Manual offers warm, witty writing, and bursts with the shortcuts, surprises, and design touches that make the Mac the most passionately championed computer in the world.
Customer Reviews:
Panther help is on the way!.......2005-09-12
This is not the first user manual, by David Pogue, that I have purchased. I rely on these publications to not only give me the basics, but also a more advanced understanding of new and unfamiliar Mac operating systems. Get to know Panther with the help of David Pogue!
Mac OS Panther, The Missing manual.......2005-09-04
Excellent help so far. Our school IT administrator was so impressed he is ordering a copy for the staff. I never realised you could continue to burn info, images etc onto an ordinary cd! The Expose feature pointed out in this book is brilliant for quick access to school reports. I am not very familiar with the MacIntosh computers but this book is going to be a great source of info for OSX.
Bilingual.......2005-05-03
I'm becoming bilingual--I'm learning to speak Apple as well as Windows. I just got a new iMac G5. Apple basically tells you to learn the system by pushing all the buttons to see what they do. Yeah, right. I also have the XP Missing Manual. This is a good series, a lot better than the Dummie series, if you really are a dummie. The organization is good and there is a lot of information, starting with the basics and going from there.
A superb book........2005-04-25
In section 3.5, David Pogue writes "In some ways, just buying a Macintosh was a renegade act of self-expression...", I believe it says it all! :)
David really knows what he's talking about. I've tried almost every tip/trick/gem he gives in this superb book and it worked. The missing manual is great book for a stunning operating system and a fantastic computer.
This book is highly recommended for folkes who are really interested in knowing how to work with Mac OSX. Worth the $.
Cheers.
Save your time -- This is the only book you need.......2005-03-30
I recently decided to make the switch from PC to Mac. The last time I had a Mac was 1997, which was the era of System 7. I have browsed seven -- count them, seven -- books now on Mac OS X Panther, and I can tell you without a doubt that this is the only book you need if you're new to Mac and/or switching from Windows (or Linux, for that matter).
Most of the other books (including
Mastering Mac OS X and the
Robin Williams Mac OS X Book) provided nothing more than ancillary, high level information that a third grader would know. None told you anything that 15 minutes playing around wouldn't, and 85% of most targeted new users. Seriously, do you really need to know the top of the mouse is called the "button" (graphic included) and how to "click" and/or -- wait for it -- double-click this button? Seriously, it sounds crazy, but these other books actually spend chapter after chapter on elementary concepts such as how to click the mouse and how to drag-and-drop an icon.
The Missing Manual (this book), instead seems to target the average computer user. I found the writing much easier to read (mainly because I didn't have to browse through pages of elementary instruction), and important information like keyboard shortcuts and using the terminal were easier to find. When I'm reading a 700+ page book, it's very important for me to be able to browse (or speed read) quickly. I found this book very condusive for that.
If you're a software developer (like me), I might suggest two other books that build on the foundation covered by this book.
Learning Unix for Mac OS X Panther is a great book for transitioning to the terminal/console included in OS X.
Mac OS X Panther in a Nutshell is another great book because over half of it is spent on Unix tools like vi and bash, and includes a full reference of commands at the end. Like all the books in the Nutshell series, the sections are tabbed on the side, making it very easy to flip to a particular section. However, I do not recommend either of these books for non-developers or for someone looking for a foundation of Mac OS X.
If I could give this book ten stars and burn the rest, I would.
I hope the information proves useful.

This is a softcover book.......2006-09-08
I was thinking about giving this a 2 star rating because they sent to me a softcover book instead of hardcover as described. However, Amazon's representative was very friendly and supportive so I decide to keep the item and give it a 4 star rating.
Did receive what was described.......2005-10-03
The description of the book stated that this title was the paperback version, which is what I needed. Instead I received a hard cover version that feels like toting a bowling ball!
Excellent for Self-Study (Distance Learning) Courses.......2003-11-24
I used this book for a distance learning course in the principles of macroeconomics (Econ 101) and it is by far the best introductory text in macroeconomics I have encountered. Bade and Parkin explain the theory and concepts very clearly and constantly use examples of a typical consumer or company to illustrate these concepts even though they are describing a macroeconomy. For those of you who have taken Principles of Microeconomics before Macro, this is a HUGE PLUS, and for those of you who are taking Macro before Micro, you will not feel a sense of disconnect when you begin microecon after this class. The authors do a fine job integrating areas of micro and macroecon and not make the two feel incompatible. What's more, they do not leave out crucial explanations to graphs, figures and equations so those who do not have a strong background in mathematics need not be intimidated. The graphs, figures and equations indeed supplement the narrative and sufficient examples are given so you can master the quantitative aspects of the course. Just don't take short cuts and do read the entire chapter and concepts will sink in like you wouldn't believe. This is the 3rd time in my life I have attempted a study of macroeconomics and my efforts have previously been held back because of texts that were too complex or theoretical. I am now pulling a strong A and this is because the text does a good job of lowering the entry barrier to learning economics without sacrificing academic rigor.
Fair - Not a stand-alone textbook.......2003-11-08
This textbook contained a lot of technical information but offered little connection to real-life macroeconomics. I love economics and feel that it is necessary to emphasize its everyday uses in order to motivate a student's learning.
Further, it is in no means a stand-alone text. By that I mean that it is not a text that can be utilized by a student independent of participation in a traditional classroom setting. Most of the topics are not expanded upon sufficiently to create true understanding of the concepts.
Book Description
This book examines the events, policies, and personalities that have shaped our economy for a half century.
Customer Reviews:
Useful and readable, a great classroom supplement........2000-07-25
If there are any general readers left with an interest in economics, they will enjoy this accessible and informative book. I teach macroeconomics to undergraduates, and hope to find a way of using this book as an important supplement to conventional texts.
Stein gives us a history of fiscal and monetary policy from the Depression to the first Reagan term. The third edition claims to be updated to the start of the Clinton administration, but this simply means that Stein has added a few articles he'd written for the AEI or for the Wall Street Journal. Essentially, though, the book's story ends in about 1983, with most emphasis being given to the period from 1968. (Stein was at one point chairman of Nixon's Council of Economic Advisors.)
It sounds, then, as though "Presidential Economics" has two strikes against it. First, Stein refers to the Reagan administration in the present tense, whereas today's students are impatient with any material more than a couple of years old. It's actually one of my hidden agendas, though, to help students understand that the world hasn't always been as it is today, and that it may well change again tomorrow. Stein's book--indeed, almost any historical treatment--can be used to make this point.
The second apparent drawback (at least, to those who share my leftish tendencies) is that Stein is a firm believer in what he calls the "old-time [conservative] religion". Yet, perhaps because he is so frankly of the right--and, of course, because he writes so well--today's typically conservative student may well find compelling Stein's arguments against Reagan's "economics of joy". The argument against (certain forms of) supply-side, or perhaps monetarist, positions might be regarded with suspicion coming from someone with progressive pretensions (like me), whereas Stein is more likely to get away with it.
Stein's historical treatment allows the instructor to parachute in more technical material at will--the Phillips Curve, perhaps, or ye olde Keynesian Cross--either from a standard text or from the instructor's own notes. In this way the various macro models are given social, even institutional, life, and don't just follow one another as a series of abstractions (as in "if this is Chapter 17 it must be a New Classical position").
The data series used in the text generally end in 1983, but learning how to update them would, in any case, be a useful exercise for the class. I also plan on requiring students to dig up media commentary from, say, the fifties, to compare and contrast it with Stein's narrative. Students must learn that not everything can be found on the web.
I've been unable to find any more recent books that cover the last two, post-Stein, decades. I'd even settle for something less fluent and articulate than Stein, if only it wasn't polemic in a narrowly partisan kind of way. So far, though, I've been unable to find anything. (Does anyone have any ideas?) Thus, in putting some flesh on the bones of economic theory--even if, in doing so accessibly, it remains demanding, since economics is never, in that sense, an "easy read"--Stein's book continues to be relevant and useful, even vital.

Book Description
Major changes which have occurred since this book was first published have been included in this edition. In particular, the chapter on Germany has been substantially revised and now includes a separate section on easter Germany. The other five countries covered in the book have also witnessed changes in their business culture and these have been taken into consideration.
This book examines the background to business practice in Europe of six major countries: Germany, France, Italy, the UK, Spain and the Netherlands. Each chapter tracks the commercial development of that country in the late 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s, focusing on the business environment, special features affecting business, and the response to the EC's single market. The business culture section in each is divided further into business and government, business and the economy, business and the law, business and finance, business and the labour market, business and trade unions and business training, education and development. The test is organized in such a manner to enable cross-referencing between countries, and maps have been included in the new edition.
A well-written and sharply focused compendium
Includes maps for easy reference
2nd edition includes unification of Germany
Customer Reviews:
Business Cultures in Europe.......2000-10-24
The title is something of a misnomer because only six countries are presented (Germany, France, Italy, UK, Spain and The Netherlands. Europe is after all slightly bigger. The section on Germany is split in two, East and West, which is not bad, but the information on the former East Germany is by now pretty much out of date. The book is easily read and contains useful information but a little too much of the old stereotyping.

pros and cons.......2003-09-24
As a tab book, it's really good! Chords are perfect, and it has alot of "how to's" in it. However, the lyrics that they put with the songs are REALLY off on alot of the songs. Some of the mistakes are really funny! But besides that, it's a good book.
One Awesome Book.......2001-12-03
I just recieved my copy of this book and IT RULES. It comes with a CD that goes over every measure fast then slow, and it is dead accurate. It has 4 songs from each of their 3 CD's

2: I'll stick around
3: Big Me
4: Alone and Easy target

Book Description
What's the right faith for those who clamor for spirituality, but strain at the confines of organized religion? Discordia — described as a religion disguised as a joke disguised as a religion — may be the answer. Starting from the "firm belief that it is a mistake to hold firm beliefs," Discordia lays out a tongue-in-cheek plan for worshipping Eris, the Greek goddess of discord. Loads of laughter and paradox are key to keeping the faith, as well as counter-evangelism, surrealist pranking, and the presentation of absurd rewards to distinguished individuals. Packaged in a trendy new edition, Discordia brings an underground classic that has sowed chaos for 50 years to a new generation of neo-pagans.
Customer Reviews:
Don't get this book!.......2007-09-18
This is nothing but a rewritten, and copyrighted! version of the Principia. Go for another version, or get one online in either text, html, or pdf format.
This book should not have a copyright, but should be copyleft, all rights reversed, reprint what you like!
For Pseudo-Discordians.......2007-06-26
This book was derived from PRINCIPIA DISCORDIA created in the 1970s and purposefully put into the public domaine by its authors, both of whom are now in the "spirit" world. Public domaine material belongs to the public and ANYONE and take it and do ANYTHING they want with it. Public domaine material that is substantially changed and/or put together in a different way becomes a "creative" work and can be copyrighted.
Discordians who consider Principia Discordia to be their bible, have a motto: "There are no rules!' But they do not mean what they say, because they now maintain that there is a rule - don't touch Principia Discordia and don't copyright any new edition. Duh? Ronin published this book. Anyone who knows anything about Ronin (Japanese unindentured samurai - wave man) knows that Ronin do what they damn well please, including breaking stupid, backward, rigid "rules". Many of Ronin's book offend the narrow minded and hypersensitive.
Now, when has a copyright stopped a Discordian? Literary thieves are stealing copyrighted material constantly and posting it on line, photocopying it, selling it on the side and so forth. Copyrights are for the mainstream book trade and so-called legitimate publishers.
Some Discordians are annoyed with DISCORDIA. So what?! Ronin's reply: "If you don't like this edition, go out and create one of your own." And, oh, you better have a bucket of money and you better not expect to make money - 'cause you gotta be rich to engage in the folly of publishing. It is exceedinly difficult to make money in publishing. For example, all those books in brick and mortor bookstores - have NOT been purchased. They have been "ordered". Then when the store gets the distributor's bill, they just return 'um. Returns, even in pristine condition, are considered "damaged" and unsellable in bookstores. Independent small publishers like Ronin Publishing are burdoned with about 30% returns (Big time New York publishers can easily run 50% returns). It is practically a magic trick to stay in business when 30 cents of the manufacturing dollar is considered unsellable trash. Of course, there is production, overhead, shipping, storage, and marketing - and royalty - all of which much come out of 40% (it's actually less) of the retail. We're talking pennies potential profit per unit sold. The creation of DISCORDIA took many, many months and Potter has yet to be paid a penny for this creative Work. And she (I) ain't holding her breath.
Contrary to several assertions in these "reviews", considerable new material was added to DISCORDIA and many many new illustrations. Illustrations can not be "stolen" from public domaine. You, I and everyone owns PD material. It is ours. Perhaps meaning in some places was altered, as accused. Oh? Hummmm, doesn't that fit into chaos and confusion? Who are these pseudo-Discordians with pc-mentality and their brains inside the box?
This book was created because the material is hallarious and brilliant. However, the original 1970s book was laid out by hand, and crammed into pages--as characteristic of old low budget works. Being so crammed and condensed it was hard to read. The illustrations were similarly crammed and a whole lot more were needed. Pulling the material out, enlarging it and adding to it - makes it more readable. Also, this edition is way more "commercial" and the cover "catchy" - which makes it accessible to readers who don't know about Discordia.
To DISCORDIANS: Stop harping about this edition breaking your rules. The authors put the book in the public domaine for you to play with. Get off of your rigid butts and create your own editions - or shut up about it - or keep complaining - thus revealing yourselves to not be pseudo-DISCORDIANS - pc-er than thou!
Hail Eris!!!!!
Disregard Earlier Reviews.......2007-01-27
Early on there was much ado about this version being sub standard. Phooey! Graphic wise and print wise it is an improvement over the edition of the Pricipa Discordia I own (Yellow cover). I for one am grateful that this holy book is back in print. Although, the reason I held back a star was for the high price. Hail Eris! Hail Discordia!
Yes please.......2006-11-03
I regularly buy reprinted editions of public domain works. Please support the publisher by buying a used copy. Hail Eris.
Steal this review........2006-11-03
Alterations to the unalterable holy text improve the Godness quotient of this rampant publication.
Preternatural references to the Godless Padre Pederastia cannot help but uncover certain samenesses within blue typography.
Samoan natives try, and Alaskan King Crab weep. But, still, without copyright nor copyleft, nor common copies, all stand.

Even die-hard fans of Star Trek get a little tired of the standard, oh-so-proper Federation lingo. Perhaps what they need is a walk on the Q side of the continuum and some lighthearted tidbits of Star Trek trivia. Our thoughtful host, Q, has put together a list of some of his favorite things--from the galaxy's most painful rite of passage (the Klingons', of course) to the best way to blow up a Federation starship, to the most time spent in a transporter (Scotty, who logged in 75 years of loop time). Trek fans will enjoy the random sampling of photos from all four ST incarnations: the original series, TNG, DS9, and Voyager. Q, ever disdainful of the human race, gets several (dozen) pokes in at characters we've come to know and love or hate--as well as a few you've probably never heard of. If you're tickled pink by Q's sense of humor, you'll enjoy this little book.
Book Description
Captain's log, Stardate Eleventy-leven eighty six point negative nine. Charted a blah blah blah with my blah blah crew today, collecting samples of blah blah blah...
Aren't you tired of surveying all the brave new worlds and startling new civilizations of the galaxy with the safe, polite, politically correct members of the Federation? After all, they only have fun when they break their own rules and leave a communicator behind on a planet of curious mimics, or travel through time to play with tribbles. Wouldn't you rather travel the stars with me?
Who am I? Spelled the same way front as back: Q! You've heard of me. All-seeing, all-knowing, dashing beyond comparison. The Q have been here since the dawn of time (and in some cases, a little before that, but that's another story), and we've seen it all. But I've put it all together in a form you can understand. The title? Q's Guide to the Continuum! (Well, what did you think I would call it? Picard's Incessant Droning About Stellar Gas Formations?)
Want to know what the longest-lived race in the galaxy is? It's here. Ever wonder who is the greatest mass murderer of all time? I know that, too. And are you dying to find out if a certain relative of mine ever played the harpsichord while dressed like a Victorian nobleman? Well, there are some things I won't tell you, but the rest will be revealed in Q's Guide to the Continuum! (Love that title, don't you?) Prepare to be enlightened!
Customer Reviews:
An interesting trivia book!.......2002-07-19
A somewhat interesting trivia book with several black & white photo's thrown in for posterity's purpose. This book present's a slightly more acidic Q than usual, no big deal though. It is definitely overpriced for what you get. Definitely one for the collector's and maybe Star Trek novices who want to find out a little about Star Trek history without trudging through the encyclopedia.
Fun, but not worth the money.......1999-09-08
The book is good, light and funny, but US$16.00 is very steep. I read the entire book at the bookshop and did not pay a cent.
It just doesn't do Q justice........1998-12-22
Although there were a few funny lines here and there, this book was not worth the money I paid for it and I ended up returning it. It should have been called "Sinical Superlatives" by someone desperatley trying to capture Q's sense of humor. I was quite dissapointed and would not recommend this book.
Q would NOT be amused . . ........1998-10-30
. . . Nor was I. To be fair there were some funny parts to this book, there just weren't nearly enough for me to recommend it. I found most of the book rather boring.

The best book I have read in a long time. Amazingly funny! Totally cool!

Perfect Game( worth more than five stars) .......2005-04-06
I don't know about the book but the game is awesome. Maybe a little blood and gore here or there, but still the best game in the universe. Cortez meets with new characters along the way that help him and the humor of the game. The graphics are awesome especially when you shoot darts at some mutants and they blow up and blood flies every where. There are some security things you need to hack. the scariest level is the Mansion of Madness. There are zombies( little children beware! ) To make a long story short buy this game!
