Great book.......2007-05-28
Great book for starter into performance mod's and even those experianced one's as well
great book, very informative.......2007-01-19
I have read alot of technical literature, and this book covers all the bases pretty well for someone with some mechanical background, but no solid understanding of turbo system operation. It is a fun informative read!
Max Boost = Max info.......2007-01-10
Corky Bell is able to relay some very technical aspects of understanding turbo charged engines, in an easy to read and understand format. I highly recommend this to any one considering a turbo for their car, so you don't get lead astray with sales hype.
good start.......2007-01-10
This book was an easy read and covers a wide variety of turbo configurations. The only problem with the book is that does not really get too in-depth in which setup is best, or alot of the theory behind designs. I would recommend it as a first read for anyone designing a turbo setup due to its ease of reading and being a general overview if you are not well-versed in turbocharged engines.
Excellent product.......2007-01-09
This book has all the information you need to learn from knowing absolutely nothing about turbo's and a little about engines... to becoming a professional after you complete your first turbo installation. there is tons of useful links for companies who sell the products mentioned in the book and this book goes over every application of turbos from small engines to large engines, there are formulas for everything and everything is in easy to understand and easily explained wording. EXCELLENT BOOK

Book Description
This widely acclaimed book, first published in 1974, was a classic from its first day in print. Written in a direct, inviting way by Harry Braverman, whose years as an industrial worker gave him rich personal insight into work,
Labor and Monopoly Capital overturned the reigning ideologies of academic sociology.
This new edition features an introduction by John Bellamy Foster that sets the work in historical and theoretical context, as well as two rare articles by Braverman, "The Degradation of Work in the Twentieth Century" (1975) and "Two Comments" (1976), that add much to our understanding of the book.
Customer Reviews:
Finest book on economics from the last half of the 20th century.......2007-10-09
The finest book on economics from the last half of the 20th century. No one should claim they understand capitalism if they can't address the fundamental points of this book. It shows Why Labor Matters--and how suppressing the social and political power of labor makes the system work.
a classic analysis of what capitalism does to work.......2007-07-16
This is a very detailed study, written by a writer who had been a skilled craft worker earlier in his life, not an academic. The book provides a good theoretical understanding of the way the logic of capitalist development degrades work. Through his discussion of Taylorism, aka "scientific management," Braverman shows how the breaking up of work into tasks and then re-defining the jobs is used to concentrate the conceptual and decision-making control into a hierarchy, and the control of workers is thus diminished. Capitalists will tend to do this because it strengthens their bargaining clout in dealing with workers.
But this is not a "technological determinist" argument. On the contrary, in his intro Braverman criticizes technological determinism. Rather, it is a particular social system, particular class interests, that shape decisions about what techniques are used in production. Technology is not neutral or independent of who controls it.
The alternative, which Braverman has hinted at in some of his writings, would be an economic system in which the physical work is re-integrated with the conceptual and decision-making tasks so that workers would become masters of production. But this would require a different economic system than capitalism, a labor-managed economic system.
Marxists, Communists, Extreme Leftists-this book is for you.......2004-03-15
It was a great torture to plow through Braverman's Marxist diatribes. An example: "...the detailed division of labor subdivides humans, and while the subdivision of society may enhance the individual and the species, the subdivision of the individual, when carried on without regard to human capabilities and needs, is a crime against the person and against humanity." Wow. If you enjoyed that passage, this book may be for you.
It is Braverman's opinion that the poor fellow who works to make straight pins would be oh so much more happy if he was capable of making the entire straight pin instead of just knowing how to put the head on the pin. It seems that in breaking his job down industry has robbed him of the glory of producing an entire straight pin. The fulfillment of creating the entire pin is lost to him forever because of the evil, dehumanizing, capitalistic management. Woe to the worker.
It's the same old story. Leftists complain and complain about the state of things but cannot offer a better alternative. My favorite current day lament: Jobs have been "dumbed-down" too much, but oh no, these dumbed-down jobs are being outsourced to other countries. Woe. Woe. Woe.
Unless you have no choice and this book is assigned to you by a marxist professor, my advice is RUN AWAY!
Technological determinism.......2002-06-25
This book is the classic in the field of labor process. Marx put the labor process at the center of his masterpiece, ¡®The Capital¡¯. But since then, not much, if any, studies were done in Marxist schools. This book filled the temporal gap between Marx and the 20th century in the Marxist tradition. The author focused on the labor process under the Fordism. Braverman illustrates convincingly how the work, under the discipline of scientific management or Taylorism, becomes fragmented, dull, and repetitive tasks. The work is degraded. There has been not much objection to this argument. But when it comes to technology, things are different. His argument has too much smell of determinism. The theme of this book could put in this way: how the peculiar technological change in Fordism affected the feature of work and the differentiation of working class. No dispute. But his prophecy on technological change seems to go too far: every new technology just destroys our jobs and degrades the work. This kind of grim image has proliferated with the high-tech wave of the 1990s. Should we listen to such a forecast? I don¡¯t think so.
Braverman made a wrong calculation. In the larger picture, technological innovations, driven towards cost-saving and enhancing efficiency, bring job growth with revamped competitiveness of the industry and economy-wide. For example, in the US economy, when the IT investment leaped up in service sector during the 1980s, unemployment rate skyrocketed. But despite continuous downsizing and rapid diffusion of IT, unemployment rate fell sharply in the 1990s. High rates in EU area and Japan should be attributed to the factors of business cycle or rigid labor market. If Harry Braverman took the helm, the economy would end up in bankruptcy to nobody¡¯s interest. It¡¯s the picture of France or Spain, Italy. Even in Italy, the technologically innovative north faces labor shortage not unemployment. Here we can hardly see any relationship between new technology and overall unemployment rate.
Sure. Every new technology makes old one obsolete, so it lead to deskilling of labor. But in turn, it entails its own skilled labor. Since the 1970s, the manufacturing sector experienced substantial technological upgrading. It resulted in the shift of labor market composition: jobs in manufacturing, less-educated work declined. Investment in earlier technologies negatively impacted mainly low-skilled production workers, particularly in the 1970s and early 1980s, whereas investment in IT negatively impacted mainly low-skilled white-collar workers in the 1980s and 1990s. Resulting bloody downsizing and restructuring have decimated so many middle-paying jobs in factories and offices. Workers who lost those jobs, especially older workers, are likely fall into lower-paying jobs or, facing long-term unemployment, retire from the labor force. But all kinds of new jobs are being created as the old ones disappear, although the new jobs go to new entrants or younger workers moving up the job ladder.
Technophobe alarmists gain popularity because whatever the effect of creative destruction might be, the impact on employment is hardly painless. Technology is important. However, what is technology at all? It made no sense, were it not run by people. The impacts of technology on work are not simple, not necessarily direct, and cannot be considered in isolation. As seen above, their relation is not clear but spurious at best. The real mechanism lies in political and economic contexts that govern the conditions of work. Thus, when we talk about technology, we cannot forget about all those other human factors affect its use and what it does to the lives of workers, employers and citizens
Updating labor theory for the age of high technology.......2000-02-22
Labor and Monopoly Power, by Harry Braverman, brings basic Marxist labor theory up to date for the modern age. Though written 25 years ago, Braverman's work is the ideal guideline to understanding the age of information technology. Braverman expertly explodes the smug myths of "knowledge age" boosters by drawing the parallels to earlier industrial technology. The major misapprehension exploded is the one that says workplace automation demands higher skills and upgrades jobs. Braverman, through developing and applying the ideas not only of Marx, but of management proponents such as Babbage, Taylor and Bright, makes a convincing case for the opposite. Computers, like other technology before them, are being applied in ways that expose two objectives: (1) the reduction of the absolute numbers of workers, and (2) the reduction of skills among the remaining workers. Braverman's 1974 book was prophetic in that it described longstanding capitalist relationships that, applied vigorously since that time, have led to increasing income inequality in America.
Book Description
In this remarkably shrewd and witty novel, Victorian London is brought to life with a compelling authority. Richard Gordon wonderfully conveys the boisterous, often lusty panorama of life for the very poor - hard, menial work; violence; prostitution; disease. The Private Life of Jack the Ripper is a masterly evocation of the practice of medicine in 1888 - the year of Jack the Ripper. It is also a dark and disturbing medical mystery. Why were his victims so silent? And why was there so little blood?

A++++++++++++++.......2005-12-22
As an adult, I enjoy playing from this book far more than playing from my beginning chord books. Finger picking sounds complex, and I love the way the base notes ring throughout the songs.
You learn a couple of different picks, including variations on the Travis Pick, and the book includes a variety of songs, such as, Ode to Joy; Freight Train; Turn Turn, Turn; and Silent Night, among others.
A lot of fun.

Simple Solos that sound Complex!.......2005-12-22
I started picking songs out of this book just 2 months after my first guitar lessons, so it is a great book for a beginning guitar player (although, I am an adult, for what that's worth). Finger picking is extremely satisfying because it sounds considerably more difficult than chords, but it is actually easier.
The arrangements are wonderful, with the thumb picking out the base notes and the other fingers playing the melody. Each song is shown with chords, notes, and tablature (sp). The book includes many familiar songs, both lively and contemplative, such as Silent Night, What Child is This, and Jingle Bells.
One of my favorites.

A Wonderful Tribute to a Sweet, Sweet Series.......2001-11-02
With over 200 episodes in nearly 30 years, Last of the Summer Wine is Britain's longest-running situational comedy. Authors Morris Bright and Robert Ross have created a delightful (albeit poignant) look back at this enjoyable series and at the characters that have made it so memorable.
Chapters include a 28-year history of the show (how it came about, changes that occurred over the years, etc.); a behind-the-scenes look at the series, which takes us through the stages involved in getting from script to screen; a listing (together with brief quarter-page bios) of every guest star since 1973 (most of whom will be unfamiliar to North American audiences); and a complete episode guide (a brief summary of every episode from 1973 to 2000).
My favourite chapters are the three ("the Winos," "the Stronger Sex," and "the Henpecked") dedicated to those memorable main characters and the actors who have portrayed them. Ranging from one to six pages per actor, brief bios are given (mostly career summaries, really, as there isn't a lot of personal information provided); further, each actor (if still alive, obviously) discusses his or her respective character, what it's been like portraying that character over the years, and so on.
Physically, this 221-page hardcover is as lovely to look at as it is to read. Printed on heavy, glossy, high-quality paper, there are an abundance of photographs (all colour) throughout. There are lovely photos of the actors posing in full Summer Wine attire, shots of the filming of the series, and scenes from the series itself. (Unfortunately, there is only one photo of the cast out of costume--a shot taken at an awards' ceremony).
Perhaps the nicest thing about this book is the participation the authors received from everyone involved--from writer Roy Clarke and producer Alan J.W. Bell to the actors themselves--and the book is rife with their many anecdotes. The authors spent a lot of time on location with the cast and crew, and the book is very well researched. Sadly, their research for the book engulfed the period of Bill Owen's (Compo's) illness and subsequent death in July 1999 from pancreatic cancer. He was 85. Nevertheless, Owen worked right up till the very end; poignantly, "The Finest Vintage" seems as much a tribute to him as it is to the series.
In conclusion, this lovely book, dedicated to the memory of the irreplaceable Bill Owen, is a wonderful keepsake that will certainly be cherished by anyone who has enjoyed this sweet series. Highly recommended. (This review refers to the edition published in 2000. I mention this because I think there may have been an earlier edition, though I am not certain.)

The best book on SVG so far.......2002-11-16
This book is head and shoulders above the Eissenberg book (O'Reilly). Kurt Cagle is a serious developer, and the book shows it, with advanced examples that explore all aspects of programming. It would have been nice to have a .zip file that had all the examples in it, but that's a minor nit.
SVG Bible for the Web.......2002-07-24
Finally an SVG Bible for the Web. I have worked with SVG for just under 2 years and had to learn SVG from the W3C documents and lots of "experiments". I have only reviewed half of this book so far and found a wealth of knowledge on using SVG on the Web. It's examples are solid and well organized.
This book can be used by the novice and the experienced to add the coolest vector graphics to their Website. This book is well balanced for all levels. It has earned a well respected slot next to my computer...
