Oh, the wonderful things Mr. Brown can do! In this "Book of Wonderful Noises," Mr. Brown struts his stuff, as he imitates everything from popping corks to horse feet ("pop pop pop pop" and "klopp klopp klopp," respectively) while inviting everyone to join him in the fun. Young readers who are still learning their sounds and letters will get a wacky workout as they follow along with the very serious-looking, squinty-eyed Mr. Brown. Whether it's eggs frying in a pan or a hippo chewing gum, the skillful Mr. Brown just keeps topping himself, with a "sizzle sizzle" or a "grum grum grum." "Mr. Brown is so smart he can even do this: he can even make a noise like a goldfish kiss!... pip!" As usual, the words and pictures of Dr. Seuss make reading (and making all sorts of funny noises) impossible to resist. Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? will stay fresh through many a giggling reading. --Paul Hughes
Book Description
Hears an introduction for babies to the wonderful mishmash world of sounds. Listen to the cow's MOO, the frying eggs' SIZZLE, and the thunder's BOOM BOOM BOOM. There are plenty of noises for everyone!

Great story for young and old.......2007-09-27
This has been my daughter's favorite book since the beginning. Everyone in our house knows this story by heart, including her. She's only 21 months old and already needs a new book because it is falling apart. She drags it out all the time. It is really easy to get into the story and change voices and make it fun. My daughter can almost read it to me now!
Fun book for infants.......2007-09-24
We read this book to my daughter before she was born. Could always get a "kick" out of the sounds. Now that she's 5 months old, she still loves this story. We can - fortunately or unfortunately - recite it in our sleep. Think it's a great "sound" book for the young ones. Plus, the pictures are very colorful and it is a board book - even better.
The classics are always a good choice........2007-09-20
My husband and I collected several books in anticipation of our son's birth, and among them many Dr. Suess volumes. We were so excited to discover that our son loved this one! From the earliest age he latched onto it as a favorite and would bring it to us to read. The board version is slightly more condensed than the original which turns out to be handy for little attention spans. Get it...its worth every penny.
Favorite book!.......2007-08-09
This is my son's all-time favorite book. He loved it from a few months of age through about 3 years old. Would recommend to anyone with little kids! A really fun read!
Great entertainment for young children.......2007-07-20
Young children will absolute love it when they're parents make various sounds of animals that Mr. Brown can make, and they will love to try to make the sounds themselves while having a great time. Perfect for young children.

Book Description
The state is in retreat; markets and private ownership gain ground. But where is the borderline? The authors in this volume, mainly economists but not only, explore it. Part I deals with questions of social philosophy from various standpoints - libertarian, communitarist, economic-sociological and institutional. Part II deals with the frontiers of markets in such areas as legal services, health services, education and the arts. Part III tackles normative issues of global trade such as competition policy, trade in "bads" and social standards. The volume contains contributions by David M. Anderson, Bruce L. Benson, Peter J. Boettke, Anne O. Krueger and Chonira E. Aturupane, Deepak Lal, Gary B. Madison, Dennis C. Mueller, Mark V. Pauly, Alan Peacock, Stefan Voigt and Daniel Kiwit, Edwin G.West.

Book Description
Among the concepts used to assess the sustainability of fiscal policy in a changing demographic environment, generational accounting has become the most prominent. This book gives a complete and up-to-date introduction to the theory and practice of the method. It reveals deficiencies of the original residual concept and discusses various measures of intergenerational redistribution based on the recent sustainability approach to generational accounting. An application using data on German public finances serves to provide an in-depth explanation and practical illustration of the technique. The study develops new procedures to evaluate the fiscal externalities of migration and the redistribution of net wealth among living generations resulting from Social Security reform. The book is an indispensable source of reference for analysts employing generational accounting and for those wishing to study intertemporal redistribution through fiscal policy.

Britain is saved from "the greatest military disaster in our long history".......2006-05-23
Walter Lord weaves an exciting tale as he relates the British 'evacuation' (i.e. retreat) of Dunkirk. The Brits were aided by several 'miracles' that are closely examined by Lord: Hitler's decision to stop his tanks from annihilating the escaping British (he was saving the tanks for France), 9 days of calm seas on the English Channel, and literally thousands of small private English boats that aided in the escape of some 338,000 troops - essentially the entire British Expeditionary Force and a sizeable force of French soldiers. Lord describes the Churchhill's efforts to keep the French happy as they were left alone on the Continent.
In his "We Shall Fight on the Beaches" speech of June 4, 1940, Churchhill acknowledged to the House of Commons, "We must be very careful not to assign to this deliverance the attributes of a victory. Wars are not won by evacuations. But there was a victory inside this deliverance, which should be noted."
The escape from Belgium encouraged Churchill: "We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old."
Lord interviewed some 500 survivors of Dunkirk to write his book, which informs the telling with an immediacy and verite missing from more academic treatments.
Highly recommended for the general reader of history, especially WW II.
Another hit from one of my favorite authors........2005-03-05
There have been few books on this subject (at least those available in the U.S.), and this book describes this crisis well. Over 300,000 troops escaped envolopement from the Germans by evacuating from Dunkirk. Lord does his capable best in writing how the British and French were outflanked and almost destroyed, but the Germans turned a great victory into a minor one. Goring and his Luftwaffe did inflict terrible damage and caused much death, but the fact is the greater part of the British Expedionary Force was allowed to escape and fight again another day.
One thing I like about Lord's writings are his personalization of the conflicts. We hear from soldiers who actually fought and escaped through Dunkirk. His writings also tell the story through a description of what went on and the military strategy involved. Lord is one of my favored authors. He devoted much time (2 years) for each book he has written. It is a shame we no longer have him here to write great books.
Thorough, interesting account.......2004-01-20
The evacuation of Dunkirk after the Nazi blitzkreig of 1940 has always amazed me. This is a period and event that don't figure too prominently into most textbooks, even though it was one of the most crucial times in World War II (just because Pearl Harbor wasn't bombed yet, after all, doesn't mean there wasn't a war on).
I was quite pleased with the way Walter Lord was able to pull together all of the information about the evacuation and the events leading up to it. The story is complex. Columns of refugees heading to the coast, the British plan for evacuation, the Belgian surrender nearly dooming the effort, resistance to keep a pocket around Dunkirk and the beaches, weather conditions and how they affected air battles, the use of the mole...Lord has managed to fit it all in and more.
The book is very good in presenting a general account of how events occurred. Lord has also managed to find several personal stories and tidbits, from the acts of officers in helping the evacuation to the unsuccessful attempt to use kites as barrage balloons at the harbor.
Tedious account...even for a Lord fan!.......2002-12-06
As a big fan of both A NIGHT TO REMEMBER and DAY OF INFAMY, I was excited to read this one. But even as an enthusiast of WW2 History and this particular author, I found it pretty slow going. Plodding details without the candid, human elemnt Lord generally writes best. I finished the book feeling unenlightened and not particularly better informed about the events @ Dunkirk.
Monotonous,but at times interesting........2002-03-09
Much of the book tells how the British organised and executed one of the biggest rescue operation in history.Evacuation -remarkable achievment-of cornered Allied troops took a week and those seven days by far darkest days in the history of British Empire.Because trapped at Dunkirk were the cream of BEF.It included men like Brooke,Montgomery,Horrocks,Alexander who went on to command armies which retook the continent from the Nazis. But I must say author bored me with all those details regarding evacuation and it took considerable patience on my part to go through this text.Author, however, has furnished fresh insights on what is widely regarded as miracle of Dunkirk.I disagree with this notion. On May 23-24 the advance of Guderian's XIX armoured corps was abruptly halted along Aa canal. All sorts of arguments were advanced justifying the halt order. In Hitler's warped mind French armies holding out below the Somme river appeared more menacing than trapped BEF at Dunkirk. This was in consonance with German thinking France being mortal foe than Britain.By taking that line Nazi leader made Germany's defeat in World War II inevitable. This misperception regarding 'centre of gravity'of war caused Germans postpone the assault on Dunkirk.British shrewd enough to exploit reprieve and mounted biggest seaborne rescue operation. Here lies the truth and not as some British historians[Ellis,Fuller] make us understand than terrain around Dunkirk[marshy, slushy]would have impeded German attempts to seize the port.Circumstances conspired to deny the Germans ultimate truimph.

Informative,persuasive,a real scholarly achievement!.......1999-08-06
There is no doubts that Poznansky's book started a revolution not only in our view of Tchaikovsky the man but as well in our appreciation of his music. Gone is a decadent psychotic and a homosexual martyr together with his mysterious Russian soul. This familiar mythological figure is now replaced by a fully drawn individual in flesh and blood with his sublimities and his failures, haunted by contraditions, as all of us, but at the same time committed to make as much good in his life, in terms of both creative work and human relationship as he was capable of. The book contains mines of factual information;the author's conclusions are entirely convincing, drawn as they are from the careful examination of all available (at the time of his writing) documentary material. It is remarkable, as we learn from the author's Preface to the British edition, that his reconstruction of the passages in Tchaikovsky's correspondence, censured by the Soviet editors, proved extremely close to the originals which he found out after he was given access to Tchaikovsky's archives in Klin. Another virtue of this book is the demolition of the silly story, popular among some biographers, claiming that Tchaikovsky commited suicide in result of the so-called "court of honor" held by his former classmates Finally, this dramatic narrative of the great composer's life makes a first-rate read!
Fascinating account of Tchaikovsky's life!! Great book!.......1999-08-03
If you love Tchaikovsky, this is a wonderful book! Nowhere else will you get such a strong feeling of having known him personally and this biography also explains a lot about his incredible, emotional and passionate music. Alexander Poznansky, thanks to superb scholarship and exercise of fine editorial judgement in the use of Tchaikovsky's letters, diaries and the archival documents, has built up a picture of the "inner man", reliant, as far as possible, on fact and not supposition. This book would correct many misconseptions about Tchaikovsky the man, created by some misguided musicologists. This biography makes clear that he was not a tormented homosexual, nor did he fear exposure and nor is there anything but gossip behind the notion that he commited suicide. This is major book.
Poznansky's book is incomplete.......1999-04-08
There is nothing in my review that mentions Tchaikovsky's music, it is only about him as a man. So, if you're not interested in my thoughts concerning his sexuality, and what I think his thoughts were about women, you probably won't want to read the rest of this. Anyway, I read this book, and I found a great amount of information some of which I personally thought curiously interesting regarding some of Tchaikovsky's statements or behavior. That is what I liked about the book. However, what I found interesting, psychologically, wasn't commented on by Poznansky. I don't know how interested he is in psychology concerning Tchaikovsky, but I think it's important because his book is suppose to find out more about the man personally. There are many statements Tchaikovsky made where I asked myself, "What did he mean by that?". It was frustrating for me because Poznansky didn't respond to some of Tchaikovsky's remarks or behavior. We all know that Tchaikovsky lived a homosexual lifestyle. Before, I thought that he just didn't find women interesting, sexually. But, my thought in Tchaikovsky's case, is that his sexual choice was based on a whole lot more than mere sexual taste. I read many books on Tchaikovsky and books on psychology (I'm not a psychologist nor a writer). We know that he was extremely shy, nervous, afraid at times, sensitive to a fault and inhibited. His perception of women or the feminine was based on teaching, and the women he grew up with. I think he saw them as basically uninterested in sensuous pleasure and sex (except to make babies or money). He learned from school that boys enjoyed sex, and he played with his own kind. His father may have acted somewhat erotic, and sensitive Tchaikovsky picked up on it. I think Tchaikovsky's mother liked him when he was young and obedient, but later something changed between them when he tried to express himself. I think he may have had mixed feelings about his mom, but would never ever directly say it. Anyhow, I could go on, but I don't want to make this review too long. However, the KEY TO TCHAIKOVSKY IS HIS CHILDHOOD! I don't think he was born homosexual, but rather he was born with certain emotional qualities and personality traits. Anyway, I read the book a few years ago, and I don't want to read it again because I don't like the way Poznansky ignores some of the little things Tchaikovsky said or did. This information Poznansky has in his book of which he thinks irrelevant and offers no psychology, I personally find interestingly curious. Please correct me if my memory of the following is incorrect :
Tchaikovsky said something like the one good thing about his future wife was that she loved him like a cat, and that he needs to be in control. Why did he have to be in control? He also said that Maria Anderson looked like a cat, and I think he observed her rubbing herself against something or someone. Psychologically, an animal represents a physical or primal thought I think. It's physicality or sensuality.
Tchaikovsky put in his diary something about a woman with a gold filling, and he said that his manservant's girlfriend had nice looking teeth. In addition, he said she was pretty and delectable. Why did he write in his diary about a woman's gold filling? Psychologically, it could symbolize something sexual.
He said he loved his mom in a sick way. Maybe he meant that the best thing about her was her physical touch. He says that maternal or sexual, it makes no difference. I thought that was a strange thing to say. Also, the poem Lily of the Valley, Poznansky said it could be about a male lover. I could be wrong, but the poem could be about his mom.
At first, he was hesitant to see, be with or visit his niece. Then, he saw her playing a leg game with some guy, and after he saw her monstrous behavior (he was quite taken by surprise), he visited to see her even unexpectedly. Also, he talks about her special female organs to someone. Tchaikovsky didn't have to mention that.
Also, Tchaikovsky was watching two different types of animals playing together. I think he made a comment that he was surprised to see it. I think he liked the idea of what he saw, and I personally think the two different animals he saw playing represented for him a man and a woman.
I can't make this review too long, so I will stop with my list. One last thing, I think Tchaikovsky's "inclinations" was not about homosexuality in particular. Tchaikovsky may have meant that he was a very physical, sensual person in general. I personally think that if a particular woman came into his life, he would have wanted her sexually, but without consequences. Anyhow, I don't remember Poznansky making any effort to analyze this specific information he puts in his book. I think Poznansky said that Tchaikovsky didn't want sex with women. Well, that's not good enough for me. Sometimes when people have difficulty expressing themselves, like Tchaikovsky, what they say can be more interesting than what they actually do. * Please reply to my review. If you want, I will talk to you and tell you more of what I think about Tchaikovsky.

A relevant subject by a no-nonsense author.......1999-05-21
This subject hasn't been dealt with much by authors and publishers. It's timely and relevant, written by an author who steps back to take an honest look at how our high tech world will impact our relationships and ability to communicate with one another. Whether you use computers at home or at work or both, this book will help you deal with the impact of the electronic age. It's a MUST READ!
Right for the times.......1999-05-20
This insightfull look into the technology of today really helped me reduce the stress in my everyday life. Well written by a Doctor, not a computer nerd.

What a wonderful, informative TV trivia book!.......2004-11-28
How delighed I was to read this wonderfully informative book about all my favorite TV funny ladies--Joan Davis, Ann Sothern, Bea Arthur, Mary Tyler Moore and many moore :). The author's style is very easy to read and there are so many facts and tidbits that it is very enjoyable. I would highly recommed it to anyone who is interested in TV trivia. It is also a book to return to again and again, because you cannot possibly catch all the tidbits in one read. This author has also written three books on Lucille Ball, which are terrific, too. Enjoy!

Must reading for OO architects.......2001-10-01
This book is one-of-a-kind in that it addresses head on the thorny problems associated with object-oriented performance and scalability. The book is divided into seven parts, which include 16 chapters and two appendices.
Part I introduces software performance and the authors' software performance engineering (SPE) methodology. Although the book continues to drill down deeper into SPE and associated factors in subsequent chapters, this part of the book is my favorite. What makes it my favorite is the context in which the authors cast performance as a function of resource requirements (workload) and configuration (capacity). Although this is not a new concept, the ensuing discussion leading to SPE modeling strategies and models and the 9-step SPE process exposes the challenges and provides a sense that OO performance can be managed through careful systems analysis, modeling and design early in the life cycle. I also like the way SPE is aligned to the "Unified Software Process", which is the RUP thinly disguised. The chapter that discusses this has some realm gems, including performance patterns and anti-patterns. In addition, the SPE is also aligned to UML, with an excellent discussion on extending the UML and some example scenarios that show how to specify time, concurrency and other performance characteristics.
The SPE models given in Part II cover the full spectrum of system types, including distributed and web-based systems. The material is highly technical and requires close attention. It is also clearly written and will provide the design team (not to mention the post-implementation support team) with analytical techniques and an effective analysis approach to performance management. The highlights of this part of the book were the way middleware overhead is taken into account, scenarios and modeling hints.
Data collection is the topic of Part III and is covered in detail. The chapters I most liked in this part included resource estimation techniques and software measurement and instrumentation. Part IV will be the focal point for designers and architects in that it addresses performance solutions. Chapter topics include: performance-oriented design, performance patterns and performance anti-patterns(excellent material!) and implementation solutions. The latter covers performance tuning, as well as language-dependent and -independent solutions for OO software. The two languages discussed are c++ and java.
Part V is devoted to applications and provides a thorough discussion of web and realtime embedded system performance issues. The format of the two chapters in this part include: performance issues, SPE models, environments and constraints. Realtime systems are given a more in-depth treatment because of the special nature of these systems. I liked the case study that used a telephone switching system for realtime systems because I have professional interests in that area.
The actual steps for implementing SPE is the subject of Part VI, which covers the process, associated life cycle activities, post-deployment performance management and how to integrate SPE into your organization's software process. Part VII's two appendices are valuable. Appendix A covers UML notation and Appendix B covers SPE modeling notations. Both are useful as quick reference guides.
This is a comprehensive book that, while focused on a narrow topic, covers all issues and factors in minute detail. The book complements two other outstanding works, Software Reliability Engineered Testing by John D. Musa, and Testing Object-Oriented Systems by Robert V. Binder. Although the latter books are more focused on testing, the material dovetails nicely with the SPE approach given in this book.
