Book Description
For those who think they know the streets of New York City like the back of their hand, think again. For those who don't know how to get around Gotham, here's a chance to get to know the city in all its glory. New York: The Photo Atlas combines exquisite aerial photography and de-tailed street atlas maps to provide a truly unique perspective of the city -- high above the concrete. The breadth of the area covered is stunning: All five boroughs are included, as well as several New York and New Jersey suburbs. Trace your bike route, find your apartment building, or take in the sights without leaving your living room. Even if you don't know New York well, you will find this book fascinating.
The atlas is a breeze to use. The photography and the cartography share the same standard grid system so you can cross-reference quickly between the two elements, and every street in the area shown is indexed for both types of maps. Both the photography and cartography are "map accurate": the photography has been geo-corrected, a process that removes the distortions in the original aerial photography. Every street in NYC -- more than 40,000 in total -- has been indexed with two page numbers, one relating to the photos and the other relating to the cartography.
Both native and honorary New Yorkers will be thrilled to own the groundbreaking New York: The Photo Atlas -- the most revealing New York atlas ever published.
Customer Reviews:
this book fails to deliver.......2005-07-27
i live in Manhattan, and i wanted a coffe table book for my new apt. i thought this book would be a great photography book showing manhattan in its entirety ... this book accomplishes the goal, but just doesnt work. it is extremely difficult to find a location in this book (for example, the block you live on now), b/c the aerial shots are just too high up. i was especially disappointed that i wasnt able to identify streets or smaller buildings. yes, it shows all of Manhattan BUT it doesnt do this in a way that is fun to look at OR user-friendly.
i would 100% recommend that someone look at this in a book store before buying.
Worth keeping.......2004-12-21
I was full of excitement when this book came out and immediately ordered one. The major focus of the book is on Manhattan and important places like Statue of Liberty and airports where they're shown at a larger scale than residential neighborhoods.
1. Not so important areas are shown at about 1/5 the scale in comparison to the scale shown for Manhattan.
2. Another disappointing fact is that these images are almost seamlessly patch together with computers. Because of this, the different perspective views of two images patched next to each other made me dizzy and uneasy looking at it closely.
3. Larger scale print outs of any one area are available for purchase, but they cost more than the book itself.
4. Overall, although somewhat disappointing it is nonetheless a great book to have and keep as a photo record of New York from above.
Great in concept but flawed in execution.......2004-12-18
The book is complete and unique, in that it depicts all of Manhattan as well as the other boroughs. Still, it was a bit of a disappointment, especially after reading the other reviews. The book could have been much more user-friendly with two changes.
* The aerial photographs are laid out according to latitude and longitude. For Manhattan, this means all plates feel "crooked" and disorienting in comparison to the usual layout on street maps. It also means that you need to flip more between pages to see certain sections of town in their entirety.
* The book has two separate sections: photos and street maps. The maps would have been more helpful if they had been displayed on the opposite page of their corresponding aerial photos. That way they could serve as a legend to the photos.
The book is so large and heavy, I suspect the shipping costs would mean it is hardly worth returning, which is my main reason for keeping it. But if you want to look at New York from up above, there are a number of existing books that are far more fun, even if they are not quite as complete as this one.
See Everything, Simply Everything.......2004-10-14
The first thing I did was to look up my daughters house in Astoria. It was there. And I've always wondered what the streets between the Port Authority Bus Terminal and the tunnel to New Jersey looked like. And in crossing from Staten Island to New Jersey on the Outerbridge Crossing it looks like there are a couple of sunken ships just to the north of the bridge. You only get a moment to look before the railing blocks the view. They're pictured here too, page 306.
This spectacular book consists of aerial photographs of the entire city of New York. Photographed in color from a height of 5,500 feet, during the summer of 2003, on perhaps the clearest day in history; the photographs are both beautiful and current. Combined with the photographs are standard maps that serve as a reference to the photographs. Finally there's an index of streets that will take you to either the maps or photographs.
It's clear that the people putting this together had a pretty good idea about how to do such a book, and it shows.
I've Always Wanted This!.......2004-10-13
After using the internet for aerial views, I had dreamt that such a book would come out. When I saw this book, I had to have it. Beautifully detailed aerial images of ALL NEW YORK CITY! The outer boroughs are included. See your house, or use the book to research the route of mass transit lines. I use the book primarily for that, as I am a train buff. But, if you just want to get a bettrer idea of your neighborhood and your city, you must get this book. Thick, glossy pages, and made wonderfully. Kudos to whover allowed this book to be released, especially in these times we live in.
Book Description
Beginning with the bold claim, "There can be no culture without the transvestite," Marjorie Garber explores the nature and significance of cross-dressing and of the West's recurring fascination with it.
Vested Interests
is a tour de force of cultural criticism: its investigations range across history, literature, film, photography, and popular and mass culture, from Shakespeare to Mark Twain, from Oscar Wilde to Peter Pan, from transsexual surgery and transvestite "sororities" to Madonna, Flip Wilson, Rudolph Valentino and Elvis Presley. What, Garber asks, does clothing have to do with sexuality? How do dress codes contribute to the organization of society? How is passing as a man or a woman related to racial passing? Is transvestitism a sign of homosexuality? What are the politics of drag? Why are cross-dressing rituals so commonly a part of the male power elite? How do transvestites appear--and disappear--in detective fiction? Is religious costume a kind of cross-dressing? Why is Peter Pan played by a woman?
The books fifteen chapters include "Cross-Dressing for Success," "Fetish Envy," The Chic of Araby," "Phantoms of the Opera," "Black and White TV" (on transvestitism in African-American literature and culture), Spare Parts" (on transsexual surgery, the surgical construction of gender) and "Red Riding Hood and the Wolf in Bed."
Rich in anecdote and insight,
Vested Interests
offers a provocative and entertaining view of our ongoing obsession with dressing up--and with the power of clothes.

crossdressing & acadamic insight.......2000-04-26
first off, i can't say i would recommend this book to someone who doesn't have a more academic background, flitting as it does from foucault to freud & back again, but i have to say that it's critique & thesis are well-reasoned, well-argued, & definitely well-referenced! it's like a cross dressing field guide in some ways... i found myself making up a list of movies/books to check out. even moreso, it's a great book for anyone wanting to study gender construction in general... as it gets at that shadowy figure inbetween the genders, who belies/affirms all the constructs...
thank you marjorie garber!

Product Description
Think of this book as a step-by-step handbook to make this business work for you, and to keep it working the way it's supposed to. If you know what to do and you don't do it, then you're not going to be successful. But if you don't know what to do and you don't learn how to do it, that's a crime, because you can learn. If you're taking a close look at network marketing before deciding whether to get involved, you'll find what you can realistically expect from a network marketing business, and what you will need to be successful. If you're a new networker you'll find what's probably been missing in your "basic training," namely, exactly what you need to know, understand and do, so your results will fall in line with the vision you saw and the excitement you felt when you signed up. For the network marketing veteran this book can do a number of things. It can be a refresher course in the basics. It might also be a new course of subjects no one's ever shown you. And it can be a valuable tool in training the people you bring into your business, because your success depends on theirs. If you understand the concepts and mechanics of this business then you can develop your own way of making it work. Simply put, they work. They work for me, they've worked for scores of others and they can work for you.

Description:
In 1996, the UK government privatised the railway industry based on a separation of rail infrastructure from train operations. Track, stations and signalling were transferred to a private sector infrastructure company, Railtrack plc. Separate passenger and freight train operators were required to pay track access charges to Railtrack for use of its rail infrastructure. In 2001, in an attempt to meet the government's plan to expand freight traffic, the government-appointed rail regulator substantially reduced the amount of track charges payable to Railtrack by the freight operators. The resulting shortfall in Railtrack's revenue is met by public subsidy from another regulatory agency, the Strategic Rail Authority. A failure by the regulators to insist on rail freight growth targets or to impose any claw-back of the subsidies for non-performance is a tribute to weak political and legislative control over regulatory mechanisms and, to a certain extent, reflects the 'capture' of the state regulatory process by the freight industry. The net result has been a decline in rail freight traffic, an increase in public subsidy and a substantial increase in the earnings of the largest freight operator.

Description:
Data were collected during the summer of 2000 from 146 residents living in a rural area located in central Ohio that had been identified as a possible site for a national wildlife refuge. The purpose of the study was to assess anticipated socio-economic and environmental impacts of the proposed refuge on local people and natural ecosystems. A 'vested interests' theoretical model was developed to guide the investigation. The theoretical model posits that attitudes of local people toward externally induced projects are a function of costs and benefits individuals expect to receive as a result of the development action. The theory posits that individuals who expect to receive greater benefits from the refuge will exhibit more favorable attitudes toward the proposed project. Anticipated impacts of the proposed refuge were assessed with a Likert-type attitude scale that was shown to be highly reliable. Variables measuring specific costs and benefits associated with the proposed project were used as predictive variables. Descriptive statistics demonstrated that respondents believed the proposed wildlife refuge would generate more costs than benefits for local residents. Multiple linear regression findings demonstrated that six variables were significant in explaining 65.1% of the variance in the attitudes toward the proposed project. The significant variables were as follows: perceived costs and benefits associated with the proposed project, perceived water quality within the Little Darby Creek at the time of the data collection, age of primary income earner, expected future water quality within the Little Darby Creek, expected impact of farmland transition on the household, and attitude toward private property rights. Study findings consistently support research hypotheses.
Book Description
International trade is perhaps more important to California than to any other state in the nation. In 1998, producers in the state shipped more than $105 billion worth of goods to foreign countries. After growing at almost 10 percent per year since 1993, California's exports in 1998 accounted for almost 16 percent of all goods exported by the United States.
In this volume, Jon D. Haveman analyzes California's export markets, answering the following questions: To whom are goods shipped? What sorts of goods are exported? How significant are the barriers that California exports face in other countries? He also evaluates the effect of recent and pending trade agreements on the ability of California exports to penetrate particular foreign markets and assesses the extent to which recent and future trade initiatives disproportionately benefit or harm both industries and consumers in California.
Haveman's analysis reveals that, in terms of geographic destination and export composition, California trade is concentrated in Pacific Rim countries and in the industrial and electrical machinery industries. Hence, the state's interests can best be served by initiatives that reduce barriers to trade in these countries and industries.
His analysis also reveals that trade negotiations in the 1990s significantly reduced barriers to U.S. exports and that because of the composition and destination of its exports, California fared even better than the rest of the nation. The current trade liberalization agenda could eventually provide relief from about 90 percent of the tariff barriers faced by California exports.
This project was supported by PPIC through an Extramural Research Program contract.

I'm at a loss for words, just read this gem of a book if you want to walk in the light with two brothers who know what that means.
The Book that Helped Change my life........2003-03-04

TRULY "LIVING IN AWE" OF THE DISRUPTIVE GRACE OF THE LORD!.......2002-03-17
This is a GREAT book. Steven Curtis Chapman gives us looks at his personal life, and Scotty Smith gives us better insights on becoming better Christians. Great for all! Grade: A+
I Don't Get It..........2001-03-19
What's with those reviewers stating that Scotty Smith takes the grace of God as a license to sin? If you agree with them, PLEASE cite examples. I am troubled by these accusations, which seem to me to be unfounded.
Awe inspiring Grace!!.......2001-02-11
This book is truly inspirational. Steven and Scotty are really open on their struggles and hardships. Each story teaches us something new. This book has reinforsed how being a Christian is more than just being obedient and obeying God's Word. It's trusting in Jesus to work through you. Grace is an awsome thing to understand and accept. This book even brought an even bigger meaning to my favorite scripture of 2Cor 5:17. If your really looking to know more about God's Grace then read this book.

Guitar Players Beware.......2004-10-16
Stephen is a great composer. I you would love to learn the cords to his songs for the most part they are not here. I had to transpose most of the songs I wanted to play. The author was very fond of Eb. I have never writen a song in Eb and the publisher loves it. Unless your great at reading music and/or transposing I would stay away from this one.

Worlds Without End: The Art and History of the Soap Opera
ASIN: 0520077717 |
Book Description
In this incisive defense of a much-maligned genre, Nochimson demonstrates how soap opera validates an essentially feminine perspective, and responds to complex issues of women's desire and power.
Even though soap opera commands a vast and loyal audience, it has been trivialized by the mainstream media and even libeled as a form of pornography designed to keep women in their place. In this incisive defense of a much-maligned genre, Martha Nochimson demonstrates how soap opera validates an essentially feminine perspective and responds to complex issues of women's desires and power by creating strong, active female characters. Drawing on psychoanalytic theory and feminist film criticism, Nochimson explores the ways in which soap opera has inverted the typical male-centered narrative characterized by a domineering, Oedipal father-son relationship that serves to control female energy. Instead, women in soap operas resist their stabilizing role in male hierarchies. In breaking with traditional narrative, soaps create a distinctly feminine, open-ended format capable of tolerating ambiguity and lack of resolution. Soap operas emerge as vessels of a subterranean female power and defy women's "assigned" place in male-designed social structures.
It is time, Nochimson argues, to take a fresh look at one of America's few original art forms. Anyone interested in television, American culture, and gender roles will find No End to Her a startling and compelling read.
Customer Reviews:
READ IT FOR THE TITLE ALONE!.......2000-12-31
This is a terrific book on an underrated cultural phenomenon. Soap operas thrive because the medium is the message: Women survive, they continue unto tomorrow and tomorrow and tommorow (to borrow Shakespeare). Soaps are the female viewpoint, their desires, their powers, their failures. And they very often were the trendsetters in female culture and liberation. I know it's hard to believe, but read this history and never feel guility about your "stories" again - Scheherazade didn't!

Enjoying this book a lot.......2007-10-01
This is a textbook I needed for a class, but I'm enjoying it anyway! There are a few items in here that seem to be done with less skill than the professor's method, but all in all, it seems like a good, user friendly book.
Great Book.......2007-08-10
This is a great book that shows the hows and gives you the whys behind it. I recommend for any beginner Photoshop users.
Good text, poor editing.......2007-06-27
I'm half way through this book. Although I've used Photoshop extensively for some time, I have learned a lot in every chapter. The explainations, exercises and tips are all good. Unfortunately, the editing was poor (mostly little mistakes, but they waste the student's time). Also, the index failed me the few times I tried to use it.
Not as good as others in this series..........2007-03-20
I was using Chris Botehlo's Adobe Indesign CS2 Revealed, which is an excellent, clearly written book, so I naturally bought this book when I needed to learn Photoshop. Unfortunately, Ms. Reding's ability to convey complex instructions is lacking. The instructions are very disjointed and confusing. With no particular offense meant toward Ms. Reding, I strongly suggest that she partner with Chris Botehlo when writing the next edition of this book.
A little light on details.......2007-02-24
This isn't a bad beginners book, but that's ALL it is, a book for complete novices to Photoshop. The author doesn't go into any detail about the features and tools of Adobe's Photoshop CS. There's a lot of tutorials that show you how to do various tasks, but there's very little about why you're doing what you're doing. I suggest the Adobe Photoshop CS2 Bible.

Don't Buy This Book.......2007-09-30
I bought this book for a Photoshop class and after wasting $40 We found out that there are several versions of this book and our class is on many different books all going different directions. I was stupid to assume that this book was a compilation of several of the Revealed books, that's somewhat true but when I got to chapter 6 of my assignments, surprise! NO CHAPTER 6 OR BEYOND. The books are eclectic and miss many steps along the way costing the reader loads of wasted time figuring out what you should have been instructed to do by the book. Isn't that what we pay for?? If you're an instructor who hates their students, or a student who likes to learn everything the hard way , I highly recommend this book.
You Are Better Off Using the Dummies Series of Books.......2007-06-27
This books was required for a primer glass in graphic design. In the class, we learned to use both Photoshop and Ilustrator, two of the most powerful raster and vector graphics packages available.
The problem with the book is its lack of description, it's lack of explication. Within three pages of the Photoshop section, I was completely lost. This meant a trip to the library to find another textbook that explained what these authors did not. That led me to the CS3 Dummies books, and a far better understanding of the material.
I suggest with all my heart that instructors not use this poorly written book in your classes. You are better off with either the "Dummies" or "Classroom in a Book" series.
You poorly serve your students with this garbage.
There are Two versions BEWARE.......2006-09-02
So I bought this book for a class, only to find out that I had purchased the black and white version, that does not come with a disk.
I guess thats why I only paid $ 20.00 for the book. Un benknownst to me the actual version that I needed was the deluxe Education edition. Who Knew?
As far as a text book...its really no different than any other written aide, which is why I do whatever I can to avoid text book.
If you really want to learn a software program use something like Total Traing DVD packages. I can say from exprience you will not be sorry. Its like being in an actual class and what they teach is not just how the software works but actual applications for the real world.
Its a digital age...dont read it, watch it.
The WORST text book I have EVER had........2006-04-14
This book is an absolute waste of paper. Filled with ugly "designs", it focuses on completely unnecessary details while skipping whole sections of useful information. it seems most concerned with making the student duplicate horrible "projects" exactly down to the pixel... rather than teaching the tools.
Avoid this book! It will drive you insane.
You are better off just using the help system in any of these products... you will learn more...faster...without brain damage.
Someone should have told the author it would print in b&w.......2005-11-07
Apparently no one told Chris Botello his book would be printed in black and white. In chapter 8 it says, "When this book was printed, the CMYK image was printed using all four process inks; the grayscale image was printed using only black ink." Sadly, both images were printed using only black. This isn't a huge problem except in illustrations where he refers to a certain color guide or box. I never had too much trouble figuring out what he was refering to because it's written in a very comprehendible way. The only other problem I had with the book may be related to the color/b&w issue as well. There is nothing differentiating tool names from the rest of the text in a sentence. Perhaps the tools were originally a different color from the rest of the text. We'll never know. This wasn't too much of problem except in sentences like, "Simply float the Type on a Path Tool pointer over the path until a plus sign appears beside the pointer, then click the path." I spent several minutes searching the menus for a Path Tool pointer to float my type over before I realized "Type on a Path Tool" is the full name of the tool. These issues haven't been too much of a problem. I still feel I'm learning the program sufficiently. It justs slows me down a little.
Book Description
This new title teaches advanced design techniques using one of the most popular photo editing programs on the market, Adobe Photoshop CS2. Using step-by-step tutorials, students work with curves, levels, blending modes, special effects, and painting and drawing tools to create beautiful designs and images. They are challenged not only as Photoshop users, but as designers, and learn about the design profession by following the steps a designer would take to complete real-world projects. They also learn what works in a design, and what doesn't. Students then take their craft a step further through advanced end of chapter learning projects. The book's full color interior and highly-visual design combine to make the ideal book for learning advanced design techniques using the latest version of Adobe Photoshop.
Customer Reviews:
Advanced? Not so much.......2006-05-27
Let me start by saying this is a pretty good book, setup with easy to follow instructions and two full disks of images and files to work with.
I give it 2 stars based on the fact that the title is misleading. This is nowhere near what I expected for an advanced book. Using layer masks, creating gradients, adding a pillow emboss and scaling images are just a few of the lessons taught. It does get a little more advanced towards the end, but (especially for the price) I don't think this lives up to the title. It's much better for the beginning Photoshop user, looking to improve. I'll be returning this book.
In this skill category, there are plenty of good books, covering the same material at a much lower price point. For instance, check out Steve Caplin's "How to Cheat at Photoshop".
Very Comprehensive.......2006-04-06
This book has to be one of the most comprehensive Photoshop CS2 books on the market in this price range. I am a design student and recently became an owner of this book, and have found a lot of new interesting concepts in layout. The book does start out on the easier side of things, such as layer masking and pasting into, that should have been in the first book and not the advanced techniques book. The index is also fairly vague so you may have to do a lot of reading before finding something that is right for you. However, when you do find something you want to try, the step by step tutorials are a breeze. The only problem I have here is that the book can seem a little condescending, but effective nonetheless. The book layout is, unsurprisingly, clean and easy to understand, and those of us in the design field have much respect for this author. The book pulls together well, especially for the competitively miniature price tag.
