If you're trying to decide..........2007-09-26
...whether to buy "How to Play Piano Despite Years of Lessons: What Music Is and How to Make It at Home" or "Play Piano in a Flash! Play Your Favorite Songs Like a Pro--Whether You've Had Lessons or Not!" by Scott Houston, buy BOTH--- and do read Scott Houston's book FIRST. He explains the whole premise of playing off chords so much more clearly and simply. After reading Scott's book, you can delightfully play all sorts of piano music you may have around your house effortlessly after a few tries. To give you an example, I used to practice fairly simple folktunes for about a week before (somewhat joltingly) being able to play up to tempo at an even pace. Now, knowing what I know from Scott's book, I can play any such song in about 15 minutes. Really! And I can play faster and more eloquently than I ever could before. Now, I have confidence that I could accompany any singer (including myself)-- a trick I used to think only "good pianists" could do (with much practice). In short, it motivates you to play music almost immediately in a fun and joyous manner.
Now for "How to Play Piano Despite Years of Lessons: What Music Is and How to Make It at Home". It's A LOT more philosophical, and a lot more wordy. It explains everything in much greater detail, and is very fond of the basic Oom-pah-pah sort of playing. The "standard" technique call for playing the melody an octave higher, the root note in octaves on the lowest possible section of the piano (for the Oom) and the chord (reconfigured so as never to reach higher than middle E nor lower than middle C) for the Pah-Pah. This takes quite a bit of PRACTICE. I certainly do not master this in 15 minutes! However, using this technique, I sound like one of those pianist that play at cash bars in restaurants that used to send my mother in the other direction because the "noise" gave her a "headache". It may work exceptionally well for some pieces, and it is certainly not the ONLY device taught in this book. It *is* a good book, with lots and lots of ideas of how to vary the bass notes and such to get a "full" sound from your piano. But you might get a headache or two... and might get discouraged and give up playing piano after all. (DON'T!) It is less motivating, and much more practice than Scott's book. I just can't decide whether I even like the result of the techniques shown. But music theory is explained in a somewhat harmless manner....
Now, I again suggest you buy BOTH books so that you can read them both, try them both, and make your own decisions. However, if you're relatively new to this topic, I suggest that you at least buy Scott's book first. Yes, you'll probably finish it in one sitting and it will seem so OBVIOUS after you read it that you'll wonder whether you ought to have spent the money for the book at all. Yes! Now, sit down and play the piano using these technique to see for yourself!
(To give you some point of reference, my level of playing beforehand using the classical method was Book Four of John Thompson series.... about intermediate I'd say.)
Azphil.......2007-06-30
Great instruction. I've played sax for years and never touched the piano until now. From moderately easy to moderately difficult. Good learning system.
Play Piano in a Flash!.......2007-06-28
If I could give this 10 stars I would !!!!
Our son started this program the day it arrived and he has not stopped since. In no time at all he was playing his favorite songs on the piano and has even arranged 2 of his own songs!
He had not had any type of lessons prior to this, just the desire to learn to play the piano. (I do have 3 aunties who are all self taught-so he may come by this naturally)
Anyway, if you are wanting to play the piano and do not have the time or the money for expensive lessons BUY this book! You will not be sorry, it is worth it's weight in gold as far as I am concerned. (atleast "this is one woman's opinion")
In less than 2 years he now plays and sings solos in church!
Great book for beginners.......2007-06-09
I really liked this book. Specially because it clarified for me somet hing I had thought: Classical piano and party piano are a world apart so the ways to learn to play the two can not be the same. Most people want to play piano for parties, have fun, etc. But then they get into learning classical piano that is not it! This book shows how to learn the right way. I do not mark it as 5 star as I do think it is a bit glib on "how easy it is to play piano" and gives you the idea that there is nothing to it, when the truth is that is easy but requires hard work and practice if you want to become good at it. Everything else is great
Very helpful.......2007-04-30
This well-written little book is just what the trepidatious beginner needs.
Even a rank beginner would probably do fine with this. Having read Houston's book, I'm now even angrier at my old piano teacher than I used to be (yes, you, Mrs. Ó Murchú!). You mean it was that simple all along?
Houston, using layman's terms, makes it plain that there's no mystery to the piano. Chords with the left, melody with the right, and away you go.
He does glide over the fact that you actually DO have to either i) learn the melody by heart on the keyboard or ii) learn how to sight-read quickly, but there's no avoiding that really.
A good book, easy to read, and will definitely get you playing simple tunes (that sound good!) within days or weeks.
Like many, I was introduced to Houston's book and technique through Public Television, and despair for the United States should PBS go under.

Book Description
The classic text on labor arbitration.
Labor law and dispute resolution professionals have long considered this to be the standard text on labor arbitration. Written by specialists from the ABA Section of Labor and Employment Law's Committee on Alternative Dispute Resolution in Labor and Employment Law, this definitive resource benefits arbitrators, advocates, and scholars. The editors apply authoritative analysis of basic practice and procedure to integrate relevant laws and their impact on dispute resolution, collective bargaining, and related issues.
The Sixth Edition expands coverage to consider over one hundred new topics and updates the Fifth Edition with hundreds of recent arbitration awards and references to important judicial decisions, academic and professional commentary, administrative agency regulations and opinions, and federal and state legislation.
Due to the growing importance of public sector arbitration, separate chapters are devoted to federal labor arbitration issues, and state and local arbitration issues. The chapters on "Interpreting Contract Language" and "Evidence" have been thoroughly revised to reflect the trend of modern critical thought concerning issues such as ambiguity in contract interpretation, hearsay, and after-acquired evidence. Changing views on the availability of non-traditional remedies such as attorneys' fees and interest awards are reflected in a new chapter on "Remedies". And, because collective bargaining agreements increasingly incorporate federal and state statutory standards, the Sixth Edition contains an extended treatment of legislative regulations and judicial decisions that bear upon arbitration issues.
Extensive footnoting, a table of arbitrators, a complete table of arbitration awards, a table of cases, a table of statutory citations, and a helpful index will save you time finding vital information. In addition, topics in the chapters are identified by BNA's Labor Arbitration Reports Cumulative Digest Index (LA CDI) classification numbers, making it easier to do additional research in that reference service. (See related books, How ADR Works and Discipline and Discharge in Arbitration, both published by BNA Books.)
How Arbitration Works includes chapters on arbitration and its setting; legal status of arbitration in the private sector; scope of labor arbitration; the arbitration tribunal; grievances: prelude to arbitration; determining arbitrability; arbitration procedures and techniques; evidence; interpreting contract language; use of substantive rules of law; precedential value of arbitral awards; custom and past practice; management rights; seniority; discipline and discharge; safety and health; employee rights and benefits; remedies in arbitration; constitutional issues in public-sector arbitration; legal status of arbitration in the federal sector; issues in state and local government sector arbitration; and arbitration of interest disputes.

The Penultimate Arbitration Manual.......2006-10-20
Elkouri is the penultimate arbitration manual. Having arbitrated, been an advocate, and taught arbitration, I feel confident in recommending this book for literally every area of arbitration. The book is, admittedly, geared toward labor law practice. However, the principles are the same in general arbitration. Labor arbitration and all other areas share a common history in the United States.
The book is clearly written, meticulously researched, and thoroughly indexed. I highly recommend it for arbitrators, advocates, and faculty.
How Arbitration Works Sixth Edition.......2006-02-20
This book is an essential for any arbitration advocate's library. I purchased it as an update from the fourth edition and I was amazed at how much more information and how many more topics are addressed in this book.

Make sure you're sent a new edition.......2005-05-06
Amazon is posting information about the 5th edition. There is a 6th edition (2003) out. Make sure you get the newest one, if that's what you want. No sure why Amazon is doing this: maybe the publisher hasn't sent them up-to-date information. Maybe by the time you read this, they'll have fixed it.
The Place to Start.......2003-05-04
I manage the labor relations staff of a public employer. This book is on my desk and that of each member of my staff. My first question is commonly, "What does Elkouri say?" That said, it is only a place to start for any experienced practitioner. The editors try very hard, and usually successfully, to be balanced. However, that balance is limiting, and keeping to the Elkouri view severely limits your ability to explore the limits or to develop innovative case theories. You must have it, but you should not rely only on it.
Essential Material for Labor Arbitration.......2001-08-15
There is no one book in the United States today about labor arbitration that comes close to the exhaustive work done by the Authors in this piece. While it is a bit weak on Public Sector arbitration, it makes up that weakness in its overwhelming research and tenacious review of the trends in arbitration in the public sector. Since most arbitration law derives from National Relations Board actions, my slight complaint is somewhat mitigated.
Some caution should be thrown to labor activists about this work: it is not a strategy book, but rather a book about the various awards and trends that have come out of many arbitration cases throughout the United States. It would be best if you knew what decisions are coming out of the area you live in, and try to keep up with (and sometimes try to buck) those trends. Also keep in mind that this is not a "labor only" book, but looks at both sides of an issue, and I've more than once have had management attempt to argue against my theory by using examples out of this book.
All in all, this is the essential work for labor arbitrations.
Must have for union activists.......2000-07-20
This book is a requirement for any union activist. It provides a clear explanation of the complexities of arbitration in the labor management relations process. The book itself is dry reading. I strongly suggest reading sections of the book as questions arise. However, prior to developing any foundation for an arbitration case, I highly encourage the activist to review the book to develop a good case strategy.
We like this book so much, we issued it to every executive officer in our union.
An excellent reference.......2000-05-11
Generally considered to be the "bible" for those involved in labor-management arbitration procedures, this book is an invaluable reference in researching workplace disputes. There is ample reference to past arbitration awards, but what I have found to be of greater value is the viewpoints of different arbitrators to different issues, giving one an ability to get some insight into the thought processes that arbitrators use in determining the applicability of various contract provisions to the arbitration process.
As a union official, I have found that using this book while researching grievance issues has been a real time saver and, along with the use of other reference materials, has been valuable in determining whether or not to pursue grievances to the arbitration stage.
While the price is steep, it pales in comparison to the cost of going into an arbitration proceeding less than fully prepared.

The 14th edition grew market share because of its clear and careful treatment of principles of microeconomics concepts, its balanced coverage, and its patient explanations. More students have learned their principles of Microeconomics from McConnell-Brue than any other text-12 million of them. The 15th edition is a substantial revision that delivers a tighter, modern, Internet-savvy book.

My book arrived in the condition that the seller had posted and it arrived before the delivery estimate that I was given.
I love this textbook!.......2002-03-23
Microeconomics by McConnell and Brue is a great text book. The explanation is very clear. I especially like the way they explain the graphs and concepts. It's very easy to understand. They give very good examples in each chapter. I use it for my class and I found the reading is very enjoyable. This textbook is definitely good for people who want to do self-study of microeconomics.
This is not the textbook........2000-03-24
We thought we had ordered the textbook, Microeconomics: Principles, Problems, and Policies by McConnell and Brue. This book however is Selected Material from Microeconomics. The Table of Contents is the same as the textbook, so this is really confusing. Be sure you get what you want.

The Very Best of Fingerstyle Guitar: 25 Songs Arranged for Solo Guitar in Standard Notation and Tablature
ASIN: 0936799250 |
Product Description
Mark Hanson’s Hymns & Spirituals for Fingerstyle Guitar is a great resource for any fingerstyle player looking for high-quality solo guitar arrangements in this genre. Mark’s great arrangements make these classic songs playable for even intermediate-level fingerstyle players. Included are a bluesy rendition of the classic “Amazing Grace”; a cool instrumental version of Alison Krauss’ “Down to the River to Pray” from the movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou"; two lovely Celtic tunes in DADGAD tuning; and several old-time jazz arrangements, including “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” and “Old Rugged Cross.” Six of the arrangements use standard tuning; two use Drop-D; and two are in DADGAD. One of the highlights of the book is Mark’s arrangement of the Irish tune “Salley Gardens,” a stunningly beautiful Celtic harp-like setting in standard tuning! The CD features full-speed performances of all of the tunes. In addition, a complete slow-paced version of each tune is included, along with Mark’s spoken tutorials.
Customer Reviews:
Mark Hanson is excellent........2007-01-04
You will appreciate the pieces that Mark arranges and plays...Great book but not for newbies though.
Nice selection of songs.......2006-08-22
The songs for this collection were thoughtfully selected. Some of the fingerings are pretty simplistic and others more complicated. It would have been nice to include the words to the hymns for those who are singer/guitar players- I couldn't determine whether they were or not from the description, but now you know.
Mark does it again..........2006-03-17
Once again Master Guitarist and Instructor Mark Hanson makes melodic intricate sounding guitar pieces accessible to those of us struggling to earn our "intermediate" stripes...Mark breaks down the tunes into digestable bites and gives you the skill building exercises you need to be successfull playing his arrangements of these tunes...and as always his arrangements are lush, rich sounding and very approachable for the intermediate guitarist......

Book Description
Film/Women's Studies
A prominent critic assesses the impact feminism has had on popular culture.
In Framed a respected critic whose reach extends from film, literature, and feminism to the culture at large offers a sustained exploration of feminist approaches to film and mass culture. Focusing on the contradictory impulses that characterize feminism, these range from examinations of how the classical Hollywood cinema has objectified the female body-even while offering engaging dreams of female possibility-to inquiries into the surprising sexual politics that often characterize "alternative" films.
The essays are grouped in three sections, each of which probes a particular example of the centrality of contradiction in the feminist enterprise. "Cherchez la Femme Fatale" asks how the destructive, diabolical woman in film (from Marlene Dietrich to Simone Signoret) performs the very contradictions that are central to the cinema, especially where the presumed heterosexual codes of cinema are concerned. "In and Out: Feminist Mass Culture" starts from the assumption that feminism is not excluded from, but rather is very much a part of popular culture, with examples drawn from film (Clint Eastwood; the woman-in-prison film genre), television (L.A. Law), and sports (ice skating). And finally, "Lesbian Looks" considers the question of feminist alternatives by looking at how lesbianism, as both defined by dominant culture and separate from it, has inspired a number of contemporary film and video makers (Midi Onodera, Chantal Akerman, Julie Zando, and Su Friedrich) to think and rethink the contradictory possibilities of the cinema.
Throughout, Mayne shows how contradiction informs feminism in productive and challenging ways. Accessible and engaging, Framed will be of interest to anyone who enjoys mass culture and thinking about women's roles in its creation.
Judith Mayne is professor of French and women's studies at Ohio State University. She is the author of several books, including Directed by Dorothy Arzner (1994) and Cinema and Spectatorship (1993).

The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and the related Remote Network Monitoring (RMON) standards make it possible for network administrators to control and monitor even the most complicated networks. In a textbook-style treatment, William Stallings's SNMP, SNMPv2, SNMPv3, and RMON 1 and 2 explains what's behind this family of popular networking standards.
The book begins with some theory about what tasks network administrators need to do, such as monitoring performance, faults, and accounting, along with configuration and security control. The guide then describes SNMP--which was introduced in 1989--as a successful solution to the basic problems of network administration. (One of the strengths of SNMP is that it allows administrators to work with disparate networks running on TCP/IP.) The author details how an SNMP Management Information Base (MIB), which stores network information, is organized and also how the protocol works to collect and store network information.
The RMON standard actually uses SNMP with its own MIB format to collect statistics about a network. The author provides detailed descriptions of this information, along with RMON filters and alarms, which can be used to troubleshoot a network.
New and improved standards RMONv2, SNMPv2, and SNMPv3 comprise the remainder of this book. RMONv2 allows network administration of more kinds of networks and devices. SNMPv2 provides enhanced administration capabilities, while SNMPv3 adds the security and encryption that was lacking in earlier versions of the protocol.
This textbook is crammed with tables and statistics, and shows off the author's command of the relevant networking standards. Much more readable than the Request for Comments (RFC) documents that describe these standards, this title provides a comprehensive reference work on SNMP and RMON for the working Internet professional. --Richard Dragan

Good Book.......2005-11-20
Good reference for SNMP.
Quite useful introduction on Network Management principles, to set the stage. You may need to dig into some more detail reference (RFCs) for some specific answers but still this book is suggested for SNMP developers and testers.
Good for developpers - bad for systems administrators.......2004-02-22
This book is deep down description of all the OIDs and structure of SNMP.
If you want to know how the messages get through (SNMP get and other commands) in a developer's point of view, and you want a full dump of all the leafs and OIDs in the MIB structure, then this book is for you.
If you are a systems administrator looking for a practical way to understand how to use SNMP to manage your network devices, then look elsewhere (Essential SNMP, for instance).
Excellent Book.......2003-11-24
This is the best book I found on SNMP. I found Essential SNMP to be lacking in detail and the descriptions in Managing Internetworks with SNMP were not so clear. So far it has been able to answer every question I have had regarding SNMP.
Worst Book Yet.......2002-03-13
I had to buy this book as part of a Network Management class and have found it to be utterly useless during and afterwards. It is definatly the worse book that I have ever had to buy. First, it was mighty expensive for the quality of the writing/material. Second, the material within the book could have covered in a much better way. It was very difficult to understand because it travelled much to far into SNMP/RMON. I found it almost useless as a reference, because it did not cover anything in a way that was pertinant to actually using SNMP/RMON on a network. I believe that Stallings definatly complicates SNMP beyond all reconition, FUBAR even. It lacked real world examples and uses. Perhaps this book would be great for someone who develops apps based on SNMP, but for someone who wants to learn about using it, its a massive waste of time.
