Book Description
Call it a control thing, but until recently--or, more specifically, until the availability of digital raw camera formats--you simply weren't ready to make the move to digital photography. Raw formats, however, changed all of that by allowing you to retrieve images before any in-camera processing has been performed. Photoshop's Adobe Camera Raw plug-in makes that process even easier by providing a standardized way of accessing and working with these uncompressed digital negatives in your favorite image-manipulation software. In the first volume devoted exclusively to the topic, best-selling author
Bruce Fraser shows you how to take advantage of Adobe Camera Raw to set white balance, optimize contrast and saturation, handle noise, correct tint, and recover lost detail in images before converting them to another format. After learning about the raw formats themselves, you'll discover hands-on techniques for exposing and shooting for digital raw, using the File Browser to preview images and automate tasks, and building a workflow around the digital raw process.
Customer Reviews:
Good book - I just wish the underlying software was better.......2007-07-15
The book does a good job explaining how to use Camera Raw. That said, most of what it covers, you can pick up on your own once you learn how to run Camera Raw for the first time (much like HDR, Photoshop does a great job of hiding it). If you are a pro or very serious about your photography, you will find suggestions on how to calibrate and speed up your workflow.
All that said, I find PS + Camera Raw slow and underpowered even compared to Canon's own Digital Photo Pro that comes bundled with each SLR. No wonder Adobe developed Lightroom as a separate product.
Last but not least, do not order this book used from indie sellers with cheap shipping -- it took almost a month to deliver mine from East to West coast!!! I wish I had bought it slightly more expensive from Amazon directly and saved time.
Time Saver.......2005-08-10
This book enabled me to learn the benefits of shooting in raw. The Photoshop raw image plug-in and all of its controls were described in just the right amount of detail. Since I read this book, I've been able to squeeze every last bit of color and tonal range out of my photos with a better understanding of what I'm actually doing. This book has just the right amount of tech-talk. This is the perfect book for advanced-photo-hobby people that want to get straightforward instruction on how to make the best of using the raw image format.
Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop CS.......2005-08-09
I am not a professional photographer, rather an interested hobbyist. I just finished studying Camera Raw by Bruce Fraser. I use the term study, because it is a very "readable", but very technical manual which does a great job of explaining the basics of Camera Raw theory and implementation. I took this book with me on a vacation (it is not for vacation reading)and it honestly took me full week to read, re-read and re-read a third time to begin to fully grasp the beauty of a small book which goes from general theory, narrows the focus down to the working detail and then steps back and ties it all together at the end of each chapter and at the end of the book. Bruce Fraser is clearly a very talented writer and teacher. In addition to covering Camera Raw he also explains the use of the File Browser, Metadata, Workflow and Automation better than any other author I have read. If you are "baffled" by the Adobe Photoshop "Help" files explanation of the above, then just give this book a chance and you will come away feeling very much more in control of your Photoshop CS, your camera and your own "style" of using the above mentioned tools. The "clinical" examples are explained step-by-step with visuals of the actual photos and the computer displays to go along with each step in the production workflow. It is just filled with clinical "pearls" of information which all got highlighted with my yellow magic marker. In fact, when I finished, the whole book was one big yellow page, because it is all there with no wasted verbage.
My only critique is one of the printing format. To explain, I have to tell you that if you use bifocals (like I do) it is very difficult to actually see the small print in some of the displays of the actual Adobe menu boxes that are used as examples on at least every other page. So maybe, if this book is updated and re-published, Mr. Fraser could use larger type size in the examples. The type size of the narrative is perfect.

A gifted author?.......2005-08-01
The reviewer that gave this book only 3 stars described Bruce Fraser as a gifted author. The description is good. Fraser is always a pleasure to read.
The book deserves the highest rating, even though you might find something to quibble about.
Camera Raw, a very inforamtove photography book.......2005-07-22
It reveals lots of mysteries about using RAW format in digital photography. This book is easy to read, I enjoy it tremendously.

Professionals in visual media face the "real world" every time their work goes to press. As authors Blatner and Fraser point out in the introduction, "In this new age of desktop prepress, there's simply no one you can ask [what values you should enter in the Color Settings and Proof Setup dialog boxes]." You need to be able to find the answers yourself to this and other critical Photoshop questions; the technology is changing too fast to rely on the guys at the end of the project to fix your errors. The authors want you to develop your "spidey sense" which is where, "in a crunch, you've gotta have an intuitive, almost instinctive feel for what's going on in Photoshop, so you can finesse it to your needs."
That's the philosophy behind the Real World series: finding the solutions to common problems and preparing your work so there're no unhappy surprises when you go to output, whether that's print, PDF, or Web/multimedia. First, this book goes over the essentials: the work environment (tools, palettes, preferences), working with images (resolution, mode, up- and downsampling), and the huge area of color management.
Once readers have those issues under their belts, they can work on techniques: tonal and color correction, selections and channels, using adjustment layers to have the perfect digital darkroom, and a variety of ways to sharpen an image (not just a blanket application of Unsharp Mask). Later sections cover spot colors and duotones (essential to every print designer's workflow), capturing images (effectively using your digital camera and scanner), and building a digital workflow using the new Camera Raw capabilities in CS and the improved file browser. And there are some great final chapters on compositing, retouching, typography, automation, outputting, and the Web.
Throughout the book there are tips and tricks that help you work more efficiently in Photoshop, for example, holding Shift while using the Move tool to take a selection from one image to another of the same pixel resolution allows you to pin-register that selection, landing it in the same location in the second image that is was in the first. This isn't a step-by-step lesson-style book. It's more the essential resource you'll read through when you first get it and always keep on hand when your "spidey sense" needs recharging. --Angelynn Grant

Customer Reviews:
No other book can dig deeper!.......2005-06-10
As an Adobe Certified Expert in Photoshop I think I can talk about this book with some soft of knowledge.
Well, this book is awesome. No doubts. From a certain point of view it's even embarassing: I've read things never seen elsewhere, small tips, too small even for the manuals (but sometimes really helpful), and Big concepts explained really well. Every single page of this book hides something useful. This might be not a good thing to say if you're a certified expert, but that's it.
Of course this book is not for everyone: you will get the greatest experience if you're an expert Photoshop user and you work daily with it, as it concentrated on productivity issues and professional tasks. Forget this book if you're a Photoshop enthusiast and you're just looking for pseudo-creative tips&tricks: there are no special effects recipes, no step-by-step tutorials and no bundled clipart CDs.
This is 800 pages of deep Photoshop production techniques. I think no other book, except for Dan Margulis' "Professional Photoshop", can teach such a lot of things to already-expert readers.
When your ready to move beyond the basics, this is the book.......2005-03-15
First off let say this. If you just beginning to used photoshop cs, this is not the book for you. This book is aimed at the experience user who not only want to know more advanced photoshop techniques but also want to know why photoshop does what it does, in other words how photoshop thinks. Its not an encyclopedia that cover every little feature methodically, instead it covers advanced concepts in themes such as Color management, image manipulation and output. Great book, very informative, like a textbook in some respects. Until you've read it, you dont' really understand photoshop.
The best there is.......2005-03-09
This book is absolutely, no doubt, without question, surely the best book on Photoshop CS out there. It's a real pleasure to read a book by people who actually know what they're talking about. Scott Kelby's "The Photoshop CS Book for Digital Photographers" is an exceptionally fine book if you're just starting with CS and trying to get your photographs under control and don't have time to read about the finer points, but once you've begun to get the hang of it and want not only to know "how," but "why," this is the book you absolutely have to have.
The Right Stuff.......2004-12-09
Blatner and Fraser have the right stuff. This book is based on what photographers need, unlike many of the Photoshop after market manuals. This is the text to use for digital photographers. Inspiring (technically) for the students and the instructor.
Very in-depth.......2004-11-19
This book gives extremely in-depth coverage to topics that cover the gamut from the basic of images and color spaces, through to image editing, filters, typography and finally output. The coverage is very in-depth. This is not a step-by-step book. The idea is to give you a fundamental understanding of the technology and then show it's application in Photoshop. The sections on building selections and using the sharpening features are particular standouts.
If you are the type of person who learns by understanding the fundamentals and not a raw process then it's a tossup between this book and Photoshop CS Artistry. The latter is a little more terse in it's style. This book is more relaxed in style so it's a little easier to follow.

Book Description
In the forthcoming decades the industrialized countries will experience a demographic transition that is unprecedented in history. While the transition's impact on public pension schemes has extensively been examined, its implication for private intergenerational transfers has gone almost unnoticed by the literature. This study attempts to make up for that gap in the literature. It gives a comprehensive overview of private transfer patterns in Germany, extends the methodology of generational accounting to include private intergenerational transfers, and presents a computable general equilibrium model that for the first time allows to analyze various bequest motives in a unified framework.

Great Grappling Gift.......2000-12-12
Even though I don't agree with the shenanigans that go on in wrestling every week, my 11-year old son absolutely adores these guys! When he passed his mid-terms, I promised to buy him a book so he could read more about his favorite stars and out of all the books on the market he chose Rulers of the Ring!
He loves the book because not only has he learned more about his favorite wrestlers, he also thinks the pictures are cool. I was also extremely pleased with his purchase as the book not only stays clear from the T&A, it is also modestly priced. That's important when you have three other mouths to feed. :) I highly recommend this book to all parents out there who's children watch wrestling and they want to know more about their Rulers of the Ring.
it's just OK.......2000-09-01
If you're looking for scoops and a detailed commentary of what goes on behind the scenes of pro wrestling - which the top of the front cover of this book promises - this book will probably prove to be somewhat of a dissapointment. It apprears most of the information presented here has been obtained from previously published material, and the career highlight matches of the wrestlers in question are most likely already known to potential buyers. I have seen worse than this, but Mick Foley's book offers a great deal more in terms of sheer size and depth. If you haven't read much about the histories of Goldberg, Sting, and Chyna, this material will be of some interest. The color photos are of variable quality. There are some proofreading errors too, among them the reference to Kane on page 169: "This defiant, seven-foot wrestler has proven that he is afraid of anyone...".
For the modest price asked, this book can be recommended with reservations only for the most serious wrestling fan; the casual enthusiast could probably skip it.

Warning! Hardcore fans stay far away from this book. The author, Robert Picarello, is an editor for an "Apter"-style mark magazine. This book never strays from kayfabe to delve into the real world of professional wrestling. There are better and more accurate books out there. Most of the information here can be found easily on the net.

a wonderful look at an age gone by.......2002-07-18
This book is a delightful look at the days when TV was live. Fran Kearton paints a wonderful picture of ups and downs of putting together a local daily TV show in Atlanta,Georgia in the 1950s. The show was called "The Music Shop" and her partner was Dick Van Dyke (pre-"Bye Bye, Birdie"). Together they did skits, interviewed celebrity guests, pantomimed hit records and did local commercials. They did promotions thoughout the city--everything from opening supermarkets to hosting dog shows. The title refers to the perils of live TV and this is a wonderfully nostalgic read of an age gone by.

Customer Reviews:
Brilliant Book! Makes MPLS seem easy! LOTS of great pictures.......2005-01-04
This is a brilliant book, because Rick Gallaher makes MPLS very clear and easy to understand! The book is LOADED with LOTS of excellent diagrams, and Rick puts the whole thing together with great, simple, and clear explanations! Rick is also one of the few writers who clearly understand that over-engineering bandwidth does not solve the QoS problems! MOST EXCELLENT!!!
Not your average geek book.......2004-11-28
Alright, I'm not going to try and impress you with all my fancy-pants knowledge about MPLS, they are many more people smarter than I am about the subject. But, I read this book, and I liked it. It's hard material made easy. I would have liked some full color pictures and a glossy more textbook style format. But that's it. It takes the material seriously, and it could have used some more humor to add a bit of levity, but as I see it, this book isn't just a geek manual, it's a geek bible.
Complex but not complicated. .......2004-11-28
MPLS stands for Multiprotocol Label Switching. It is a complicated system of nodes, networks, allocations, routes, and databases. Rick Gallaher's Guide reads like a Spanish 101 textbook. Yes, it's great to know the difference between a physical, a data link, and network layers, but at the same time, it's a whole lot of material to take in at once. This isn't a book you can cram into your head in one sitting. It requires (as with Spanish 101) a semester to get it right. There are terms you have to practice. Acronyms you have to learn and whole slew of words that aren't exactly the easiest things to remember. That is a fault of the subject matter jargon and not the fault of the manual. Gallaher's Guide is a solid learning tool, and I think would work perfectly with a mentor or as part of an intructional class. By itself, it's more like reading a spanish textbook, without ever hearing the language spoken.
Wicked Intense Training Manual.......2004-11-28
This is a wicked intense manual. I was given this book as a holiday gift last year, and I found it to be very intense and full of good metaphors and intelligent information. This year, I'm using the book as a training guide fro the students in my class starting in January. And I've asked for another copy for the holidays (this time to highlight allt he important analogies!)
Intelligent AND Enjoyable!.......2004-09-13
Having read DOZENS of IT textbooks and glossaries and how-to guides, and knowing intimately the miserable vacuum that IT books tend to comprise (in terms of both rigid didactics and MENSA-marinated peacock preening), I will say that "Rick Gallaher's MPLS Training Guide" presents a welcome alternative -- finally. While there is (and will be) much more to discover about MPLS than is discussed in this primer, the beauty of this book is that the reader doesn't have to endure hundreds of pages of arrogance in order to learn something. Gallaher respects both the reader and the learning curve -- as though he's sharing the information because he believes that it should be shared, rather than revealing it because the reader knows some secret handshake -- and manages successfully to sidestep the self-indulgence and garish elitism that so often sinks IT books. In dismantling the us-them barrier between MPLS concepts and newcomers, Rick Gallaher has put some oxygen into the process of IT learning.
