The literature of bird watching is full of memoirs set in out-of-the-way, rural locales, but few are set in the heart of big cities such as New York, where Wall Street Journal ornithology columnist Marie Winn hangs her hat. In this delightful account, Winn tells of birding in Central Park with an unlikely band of fellow enthusiasts (including Mary Tyler Moore and Woody Allen). Among her objects of study were a pair of increasingly uncommon wood thrushes who set up their nest in the park's Ramble, treating city dwellers to their "penetrating, flutelike, heart-stoppingly beautiful song: Ee-oh-lee, ee-oh-loo-ee-lee, ee-lay-loo," and a pair of red-tail hawks who courted, mated, and produced offspring, thus quickening the spirits of Manhattanites. Both urbanites and those inclined to country matters will enjoy Winn's gracefully written story of observation and discovery.

Book Description

Marie Winn is our guide into a secret world, a true wilderness in the heart of a city. The scene is New York's Central Park, but the rich natural history that emerges here--the loons, raccoons, woodpeckers, owls, and hundreds of visiting songbirds--will appeal to wildlife lovers everywhere. At its heart is the saga of the Fifth Avenue hawks, which begins as a love story and develops into a full-fledged mystery.

At the outset of our journey we meet the Regulars, a small band of nature lovers who devote themselves to the park and its wildlife. As they watch Pale Male, a remarkable young red-tailed hawk, woo and win his first mate, they are soon transformed into addicted hawk-watchers. From a bench at the park's model-boat pond they observe the hawks building a nest in an astonishing spot--a high ledge of a Fifth Avenue building three floors above Mary Tyler Moore's apartment and across the street from Woody Allen's.

The drama of the Fifth Avenue hawks--hunting, courting, mating, and striving against great odds to raise a family in their unprecedented nest site--is alternately hilarious and heartbreaking. Red-Tails in Love will delight and inspire readers for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful story.......2007-02-12

I live in Portland Oregon, and have large populations of birds in my back yard, so this was a fun read. Perhaps i will visit NYC someday, and i will bring my glasses! What a nice book!

5 out of 5 stars Birding in central Park.......2007-01-06

Although the star of this book is Pale Male, there are also wonderful stories of encounters with other birds. Marie Winn is a good writer and this is a very entertaining book for anyone interested in Pale Male or birding in Central Park.

3 out of 5 stars SHOULD BE RE-NAMED.......2006-11-10

I was hoping for a more in depth article on Pale Male. This book had a more general theme to it pertaining to all the birds/wildlife in the park. It was okay, I am glad I didn't buy it, a friend let me read hers. I absolutely love, and purchased after watching it, Pale Male, the video produced by Nature, narrated by Joane Woodward.

5 out of 5 stars Repeated Enjoyment.......2005-11-10

Every year goes by and this simple tale becomes more treasured and heartwarming. I have given dozens of copies of this book to friends, birders and non interested alike. Everyone is grateful for the inspiration that this unusual piece of nature brings.

We watch eagles return to a nest along a stretch of the Llano River that falls in line with a highly traveled highway and the human reaction is just the same as the thousands of New Yorkers. Scores and scores of strangers with craned necks and binoculars in raised and ready position, standing in the back of their truck beds only to get a little closer to the marvel of the eagles on the the back side of our very own ranch and river.

From fall to spring each year my weekend exploration includes a trip to see the eagles and I am always thinking through whom else I could share Red Tails In Love with...it is not hard.

5 out of 5 stars Purchased this book in protest against Pale Male's eviction.......2004-12-16

As a New Yorker, I hadn't really paid much attention to Pale Male before this unfortunate state of affairs. There was something shockingly callous and arrogant in the way the board of 927 Fifth Avenue destroyed this magnificent bird's home. I hope the hawks will eventually get their nest back.

I would like to find out more about this star's history and family. My whole family is now crazy about him and Lola.

Hail Pale Male!

          The contributors contest the liberal assumption that the rule of law will go hand in hand with a transition to market-based economies and democracy in East Asia. Using case studies from Hong Kong, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Japan and Vietnam, they argue that the rule of law is in fact more likely to provide political elites with the means to control civil society.

            Book Description

            Who Would You Do? is both a humor book and a provocative parlor game. The premise is deliciously simple: Author Susan Segrest puts forward a celebrity sexual scenario, and the reader (or group of readers) has to choose who to ravish. The result is a wildly addictive fantasy, perfect for bachelorette parties, evenings out with friends, or a day at the beach.

            The range of choices is mind—and gender—bending, spanning all walks of life. Who would you do? The Pope or the Dalai Lama? Would you rather have a day at a nude beach with Ben Affleck or a night in the dark with Matt Damon? Who would you rather see perform at your local strip club—Rue McClanahan, Betty White, or Bea Arthur?

            Who Would You Do? is omnisexual, perfect for men and women, straight or gay. There are male/male choices (Will Smith or Tommy Lee Jones) and female/female choices (Heather Locklear or Heather Graham), as well as a few mix-and-match options (Madonna or Jon Bon Jovi) thrown in just for fun.

            Saucy and irresistible, Who Would You Do? combines three of America’s favorite leisure activities: celebrity watching, reading, and sex.

            This book genuinely teaches you how to approach things differently, to understand why, and to enjoy yourself while doing it. I take my hat off to the authors, who after all are men. They could have kept this to themselves, and therefore held onto the power; but they didn't. Thankyou.

            3 out of 5 stars Its got nothing to do with either sex.......2007-02-23

            OK I've read both kinds of books. The ones that say women are crazy and the ones that say men of jerks. This is of the latter. It tells women that basically what ever goes wrong in the relationship, it isn't your fault. It catergorizes men into certian types. I guess for some women they must connect with this. Being a guy it just irritated me and gave women more fuel for their fires. Likewise I would believe that many women are not pleased with the male books that point out the shortcomings of women. The solutiions to life will not be found in the pages of this book or any others. The problem is much deeper than that. Women and men are totally different, with different needs and different expectations. We need to recognize that. I am afraid that feminism has done nothing tohelp this fact. In the "good old days" women and men had predefined roles and we didn't have the same problems. Now you have 2 very different sexes vieing for equality. Equality on every level will never work because we are so different.

            Before I read this book I thought I was pretty cool. Now I realize I'm just a big jerk. My life has no meaning anymore, I think I'm just going to end it. Thanks Joe!

            3 out of 5 stars Classic Oversimplification.......2007-01-12

            I always love hearing suggestions like the ones in this book. The assumption coming in is that the reader bought the book because they have tried everything but the other person is still a "jerk". Unfortunately, it ignores the fact that a relationship is a two way street. There are certainly a number of cases where one person is completely (or mostly) in the wrong. However, is it not much more likely that both sides are not working together, and that both sides are indeed to blame? A husband may be a jerk, or a wife, and both sides would simply blame the other. It seems rather biased to assume that just because things aren't going well in a relationship that the man must be wrong, and the perfect woman must now employ these techniques in order for him to see the folly of his ways. It is classic revisionism that when the man is a jerk its his fault...however, when the women angers the man she is simply reacting to his awful behavior. Wake up people! Its not the womens fault when the mans acting terribly, but women its not the mans fault if you're acting horribly as well. Take responsibility for yourself and learn how to examine things from the other persons shows. That, rather then passive aggressiveness or blatant manipulation, is the real path to a stronger relationship and a more caring bond.

            5 out of 5 stars Stop trying to please that angry jerk! (and get out ASAP!).......2006-11-16

            This book really saved my life when I was in a relationship with an angry, critical man and couldnt leave until I could afford to. It really helps you to stop trying to please them too. You cant make them happy or make them stop criticizing you. It's impossible. The best thing this book taught me is to stop arguing with them and instead - agree with them. You have to read it to understand how this works but it is so FUN and it gets them off your back!! It made my life so much more peaceful and tolerable. It is a very interesting twist on human behaivor and the effect of one person changing drastically and in turn the other person has no choice but to do the same. Helps you to take back your power, self-esteem and peace of mind. Dont let your "jerk" ever see it though! Make sure it is well hidden!

            5 out of 5 stars There is no fury like a woman scorned.......2005-04-05

            Up until my early years in college, I really didn't have a full grasp of the feminism movement. I always had this stereotype of bitter, angry women perpetuated by conservatives in the media who thinks that feminists don't shower and are masculine-looking. I was quickly proven wrong when I bought "Angry Women in Rock volume one" when I was in my early twenties. This book was truly my first taste in female empowerment and that the word "feminist" should not be viewed in a negative connotation. Author Andrea Juno explores the term "feminism" with several artists and bands in the alternative music, when 'alternative' truly meant for something and not the bland, dull BS that is polluting the airwaves nowadays. I found this book to be both informative and entertaining. My personal favorite interviews are with Valerie Agnew of the Seattle band 7 Year B***h (one of my favorite bands during the 'grunge' era) and Kathleen Hanna (ex-Bikini Kill vocalist, now Le Tigre vocalist). It was interesting to read about Kathleen Hanna's career choices which included working in the sex industry and her experiences with more conservative 'feminists' like Andrea Dworkin. Another interesting conversation Andrea has is with the San Francisco punk band Tribe 8. In Tribe 8's case, they discussed mostly about lesbian-related issues but the band as a whole. I was totally blown away by the description of their stage performances which involves a strap on, a knife, and occasionally a chainsaw. That was fascinating reading to say the very least. My personal favorite interview is with Valerie Agnew, the drummer from 7 Year B***h. She discusses her friend Mia Zapata's death (RIP Mia), music, and women's sexuality. There are also some really good interviews with artists that I had never heard of before like lesbian folksinger Phranc who occasionally dresses up in drag, Jarboe of Swans, Lois, and Naomi Yang of Galaxie 500. As for mainstream artists, Andrea talks to Chrissie Hyndes of The Pretenders and Joan Jett. Lastly Andrea also talks to a couple of women who run a couple of small, independent record labels Bettina Richards of Thrill Jockey Records and Candice of K Records. I really enjoyed reading "Angry Women in Rock volume one". Not only did it influence me musically (at the time) but also on a deeper level, mainly on women's issues. Very informative and entertaining at the same time. It is rare to find a book that is both.

            4 out of 5 stars Close-up with an Assortment of Musicians / "Artists".......2003-10-19

            The Jarboe interview included here is intense and very enlightening. Jarboe, a vocalist, musician, and "artist" really went for disclosure during her time with the interviewer. I fell over with admiration for her and her determination, that is well covered in, and exclusive to that lengthy chapter on her. She talks about her experiences of when she was younger, her time with Swans as an essential player - a WOMAN - in the Swans' saga, her relationship, and her work as a solo recording artist in equal parts. The outlandishness, isolation and pain of her experiences - in life and in work - are balanced here for the reader with the sensitivity and strenght of Jarboe's attitude (not to mention the one of the woman who interviews her). The heart of my old co-worker, a Swans fan, was won over as soon as she read this chapter on Jarboe; up to that point this person was mostly interested in Michael Gira regarding Swans.

            The other musicians of my taste that are covered in this volume are given decent profiles with fairly interesting articles. I found the articles on Phranc, Kendra Smith and one or two others, quite welcome because I hadn't known those artists at all. Unfortunately, I kept getting distracted by the book's sterile format and unfocused perameters of artistry. Or shall I be fair, and just say this is literally an assortment of artists (of varying scope and breadth) strung together between two covers with really only one thing in common: they are women. Alas, this important factor cannot be diminished.

            I used to have this book. It was lost or stolen. To its credit, I've chosen to acquire it over again.

            4 out of 5 stars HELL HATH NO FURY ..........2000-06-27

            My favourite artist, Jarboe (ex Swans) appears in this book in an exhaustive article and interview, with lots of original & some controversial pics. I found info here that is not available anywhere else. But to be honest, I have not read the entire book since lots of the artists are beyond what you might call "obscure." Quite frankly I also failed to pick up what these ladies were so furious about. And Andrea Juno's obscurantist political ramblings sometimes gets irritating. I love the beautifully illustrated cover and rare pictorial material found throughout the book -- the format and presentation are quite special. Serious rock fans, feminists (but not Camille Paglia) and lovers of Re/Search Publications will love it (but they might all have it already). So for the brilliant Jarboe chapter I give it four stars, otherwise it would have been three.

                  Product Description

                  `An outstanding book on a significant topic… I recommend this highly to interested readers' - Arvind Singhal, Professor and Presidential Research Scholar, Ohio University `Imagi-Nations and Borderless Television neatly captures the revolution that television in Asia has gone through over the last 15 years…. Important for anyone wishing to understand the future of Asian television' - Andre Nair, Chairman and CEO Asia Pacific, Mediaedge: CIA `The book is overdue… a useful reference for anyone who is interested in the development of transnational television in Asia' - Joseph Man Chan, Professor of Communications, Chinese University of Hong Kong `Amos Owen Thomas takes us through this momentous change, with an extensively researched and cogently argued book. A must-read volume for scholars interested in television in Asia and around the world' - Daya K Thussu, Professor, University of Westminster The media and communications scene in Asia underwent radical transformation towards the turn of the 20th century. The advent in the early 1990s of transnational television via satellite caught Asia unawares, much as it has the world over. This book brings a transnational and inter-disciplinary perspective to understanding the media industry in Southeast, South and Northeast Asia. Imagi-Nations and Borderless Television demonstrates that the globalisation of cultural industries involves not homogenising westernization, but postmodern hybridisation. Amos Owen Thomas analyses how and why this has occurred within the larger context of economic, political, social and cultural processes within regions, nation-states, transborder ethnic communities, even international diaspora. He argues that in the case of transnational television, growth was influenced not just by governments and policy makers but also by the strategic management decisions of media owners, cable operators, satellite providers, ad agencies, marketers and other players, whether pro-active or reactive. Not only does this book explicate the processes of television globalization, it seeks to raise some socio-ethical issues that ought to be addressed in managing newer electronic media in these and other developing countries and emerging markets around the world. Challenging conventional notions about the cultural imperialism of global media conglomerates, this book is widely welcomed by a broad readership ranging from communication and media studies to multinational business, policy makers and NGOs.

                  4 out of 5 stars Review for C The complete Reference by Herbert Schildt.......2006-02-23

                  This is an excellent reference book for C programming. I have been programming in C for a year now and this book has proved to be a valuable addition to my collection of C texts. The book is not designed for persons who wish to start programming in C for the first time. However, even if you are a beginner in C this book will be a tremendous asset to you, especially as you become more advanced in the C language. The standard libraries are covered in detail and accompany lots of examples. Most of the concepts of the C language are explained clearly and are accompanied by suitable examples. There are some areas that are a bit vague but this is more than compensated for by examples. I recommend this book for anyone who wishes to program in the C language but note this book alone will not be enough. It is a 'must have' in your collection but to get a full understanding of some of the C concepts you will need to have more C literature.

                  4 out of 5 stars Great once you know what you're doing........2005-12-23

                  I got this book as one of my first for programming a few years ago. I was able to compile some programs and have a basic idea of how the language worked. But it was really hard absorbing all of the information with just this book. It was the only thing I had to learn programming at first. When I took a class in high school for C, all of the information really came together. I knew everything we did in that class and then some. But the information gets a little dry. This book does what it is supposed to, though. If you spent enough time with it, you could very well learn how to program. But for me, I couldn't read it front to back like I had wanted to as a new programmer.

                  I suggest buying a companion book or taking a class before buying a reference book. After you learn how to think like a programmer, thats when you buy a reference book. Learning a language without knowing how to apply it was getting me nowhere. Great book though; I'm just throwing out a warning for anyone that is considering getting into programming, and using this as your first book.

                  2 out of 5 stars Entry in the Jargon File.......2005-08-21

                  I have no personal opinion, not having read this, although the negative comments sound reasonable...besides, you should always take a reference with a grain of salt (I wanted to rate "-", but was forced to select a rating). But the term Bullschildt has INDEED made it into the Jargon File.

                  Entry:

                  bullschildt: /bul'shilt/, n.
                  [comp.lang.c on USENET] A confident, but incorrect, statement about a programming language. This immortalizes a very bad book about C, Herbert Schildt's C - The Complete Reference. One reviewer commented "The naive errors in this book would be embarrassing even in a programming assignment turned in by a computer science college sophomore."

                  But just because there are naive errors doesn't mean it wouldn't be useful to somebody even more naive.

                  5 out of 5 stars It is really "the complete reference".......2004-08-18

                  This book teach you since the beginning of C for advanced techniques. If you are a beginner or a senior programmer, you must have this book, reasons:

                  - Teachs all C basics, with an easy and clean language;
                  - easy-to-understand code examples;
                  - shows the basics of artificial intelligence;
                  - shows data structures, binary trees, nodes, etc;
                  - Have a full part teaching how to write a C interpreter, using everything you've learned on the book. You'll be able to write advanced code after reading this part.
                  - And the MAIN PART of the book: has a complete reference of C functions, with list of parameters of each function, little description and examples.

                  The only bad thing is the chapter about pointers and matrices. In some parts I got confused. But, after reading the entire book.. I've understood all the logic involving pointers and matrices.

                  This is the most used C book here in the brazilian universities.
                  Recommended! You MUST have this book in your shelf!
