Customer Reviews:
Spectacular and priceless textbook.......2007-07-25
Have read it so many times the binding is broken. George Nash is an amazing craftsman and provides numerous time and money saving suggestions. Must have for buyers/owners of older homes.
A practical renovation book vs. a nice picture book.......2007-07-23
I am never motivated to write a review for purchased books, but this book is so outstanding that I must. Essentially, this book actually provides useful information and a methodology of thinking which allows the home owner to solve problems in renovating for repairing his house. As other reviewers have noted, one reads the book looking to find answers to specific problems and amazingly the information is there! The reason for the success I believe is two fold. This author has done this work before, that is, renovate OLD homes, as apposed to a contractor who simply tears out and builds new. He has empathy with the home owner. And two, the author is succinct in his information. He doesn't waste page after page with reviews of tools you might need (don't you hate those!) He doesn't waste pages on photographs of workers holding up a level! He doesn't waste pages simply telling the reader, "oh, you better hire someone for that, and that, and that ..." And more importantly he is writing to the home owner who is a 'do it your selfer' is therefore is concerned about expenses. He simply has managed to provide information which is actually useful, in a well written, beautifully photographed, inspiring book. If you really need advice about old homes, I can't recommend this enough.
This Book Earned Its Five Star Rating!.......2007-06-21
I pulled this book off a library shelf just to browse it. Wow! My house is 101 years old so maybe; I am biased. But George Nash is a very knowledgable lover of old houses. He must have worked as a building inspector since he knows so much. It is full of great information and photos. People who should read this book are; house lovers, real estate agents, restoration contractors, and anyone thinking about buying an older home. I love it!
Rebnovation.......2007-05-26
I purchased this book for my 21 year old son who is an apprentice carpenter for a contractor who does renovation of houses. This is one of the finest renovation books I have had the opportunity to review. It has the renovation coverage that will be a great boon to my son in his learning of the carpentry trade. I have been an electrical contractor for over 40 years and have a lot of experience in all of the trades. I am impressed with this book. It will be of great benefit to my son as an overall reference book in renovation. Thank you!
The Bible for renovationg old houses.......2007-02-07
This should be one of the first books on your new-old house's bookshelf when you move in. Its advice on a multitude of repairs including repairing the pulley systems in your old windows, how to repair rot damage anywhere inside or outside of your house, etc. is extensive and very helpful. This book is a great resource for the do-it-yourselfer...or, if you want to hire someone, at least you will be knowledgable enough after reading this book as to whether or not they are doing a proper job.

Book Description
Every summer, Eric goes to live with his grandmother in El Barrio (Spanish Harlem) while his parents work. Through the long hot days, Grandma fills her apartment with the blaring horns and conga drums of Bomba y Plena, salsa, and merengue-the music she grew up with in Puerto Rico-sharing her memories and passions with Eric.
But Eric sees Grandma in a new light when she gets them tickets to hear their favorite band in concert. The music sounds so different than it does at home on their scratchy records. And then the lead singer serenades Grandma right in front of the whole audience!
Join Eric Velasquez on a magical journey through time and across cultures, as a young boy's passion for music and art is forged by a powerful bond between generations.

This is a beautiful book!.......2005-02-19
This is a beautiful book - the story and the illustrations will truly touch your heart as they did mine. I am in my thirties and just happened to see this book when passing through the children's section of the library. I had to have this! Eric Velasquez passes on the special gift of remembrance of the close bond that he shared with his abuela. You can see and feel every ounce of their love for each other and music on each page. Kids and adults alike NEED more books like these.
A Must Read-This is one of the Best!.......2004-12-10
When your eyes feast upon the frontispiece illustrations-before the story has even begun-you know you're into something good. Eric Velasquez serves up a sometimes dazzling, sometimes quiet, evocation of the magic of album covers, salsa music, and warm family love in this autobiographical reminiscence of his childhood in Spanish Harlem.
The pictures can be eye-popping dazzling; many times they are more serene one-panel set pieces. At all times, they accurately and richly convey emotion and setting. Here, the settings range from Grandma's house in El Barrio, to a brightly lit nightclub (both inside and out) in the Bronx, and even to young Eric's imagination.
The plot revolves around Eric and his grandmother, who met many of the best salsa players while growing up in Puerto Rico. The furnishings and her love of a few material objects suggest her relatively modest means: her record player and records. Without a trace of melodrama or contrivance, author/illustrator Velasquez shows music's importance to "Grandma":
"Sometimes," Grandma said, "a song can say everything that is in your heart as if it was written just for you."
She says this, covering her heart, and at the side, we see a picture of her and her husband long ago in Puerto Rico. There is joy as well. Listening to a meringue from the Dominican Republic, Grandma sways her hips, moves her arms, and generally loses herself in the rhythms. There's one shockingly good picture showing a somewhat older Eric drawing sketches based on album covers: "As I drew, I could see the record covers coming to life and the bands performing right there in Grandma's living room." Bright, angular, Picasso-like suggestions of musicians playing their instruments fill the page.
The narrative turns on an invitation from Grandma's band member friends (Rafael Cortijo "to bomba y plena what Duke Ellington was to jazz," Ishmael Rivera, and Sammy Ayala) to hear them at a nightclub. Grandma and Eric wear their best clothes, walk into the darkened theater, and begin to hear a conga beat "BOOM BAK BOOM BAK BOOM BAK. Then the lights came on with a loud BOOM, and the band began to play the song "El Bombom de Elena" ("Elena's Candy")." Eric and his Grandmother share a strong love for each other, bound, in part, by the riches of their shared music. "Even today," writes Velasquez, "I imagine I'm back in Grandma's living room and she turns to me and says, "You be the DJ today. Siempre me gusta tu selección." ("I always like your selection.")
First published in 1991, this is one of the best books for kids and adults I've read this year. By the way, Eric Velasquez received the Codetta Scott King/John Steptoe Award for New Talent for his illustrations in "The Piano Man." I recommend "Grandma's Records" with a sense of discovery and enthusiasm!

With a spunky, fact-packed text by the longtime host of the award-winning children's program Captain Noah and His Magical Ark, and featuring dazzling animation-style artwork, this grand tour of the TV world gives a behind-the-scenes view of how cartoons, sitcoms, and other kinds of shows are made.

Customer Reviews:
Broadcasting and Cable Magazine.......1999-04-07
"This book, by award winning children's show host "Captain Noah", while designed to explain how television works to children, is written and illustrated in such a clear and easy-to-understand style that it is an excellent primer for anyone. Engaging and informative."
Parenting Magazine.......1999-04-07
"From Satellites to Soap Operas (Television's Captain Noah) explains it all in this lively and sophisticated look at the television industry."
brilliant it must have been written by God's assistant!!.......1998-12-30
Received in stocking for christmas and was so compelling that Christmas lunch and afternoon nap with Santa was delayed by three hours. The author of this book was clearly a celebrated performer not recognised in his day and throughout it's pages there is the distinct impression that his daughters artistic flair and innovative style is reflected in the authors presentation. Well worth twice the cover price.

Inroads: A reality in software........2000-12-23
Book has lots of templates which are easy to use. The book is extremely practical and a "MUST" have for every software engineer.
Book Feedback.......2000-12-23
Excellent book with lots of templates and easy to understand text. Authors have done a great job.
Not as good as I hoped.......1999-12-28
Basic concept of book is that 'quality cannot be inspected in, it must be build in'. I did come away with some new ideas and some interesting points. However, I frequently found the book to be off the main theme.
New and practical view of software quality.......1999-07-08
Every time you buy a book that relates to quality you find the same ideas, interesting but how to carry them out? This book will help you to build a quality system that fits your organization. Good exaplantion about use of checklists, testing, and a new software quality paradigm.
Good insights on the New Paradigm. Detailed checklists and.......1998-04-02
This is a must book for those who continuously find the same defects from release to release. The New Paradigm gives the readers the concepts and implementation of "filters" that prevents defects from going further in the development cycle. This book is not about software testing or reviews but about Software Quality Assurance . It has overall concepts on the product assurance and process assurance activities that increases the robustness of a product. There are several books in the market on the subjects of inspections and testing. After reviewing several books, I found this is the only book that has taken the Deming principle of "defect containment" and shown the readers the effectiveness of the processes, if implemented correctly.
