Rick Steves, author of 21 guidebooks and host of the television series Travels in Europe with Rick Steves, has spent 100 days a year traveling Europe, every year, since 1973. If any American knows Paris, he does, and his self-imposed mission is to make the city just as accessible to those of us who don't have the good fortune to spend months there at a time.

In his amiable, informed, and ruthlessly candid way, Steves focuses on the best--including nice places to stay and eat that give lots in the way of character and take relatively little in the way of francs. He suggests walking tours, museums, and itineraries that include both famous landmarks and little-known finds. He knows it all: art galleries and crêpe stands, street cafés and romantic neighborhoods, activities for kids, and great places to shop. Most importantly, he knows how Parisians live, and his guide provides the best information to let you experience not just the sights of Paris, but Parisian life as well. --Stephanie Gold

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My favorite guide books!.......2007-05-25

Rick Steves writes my favorites guidebooks, no matter where I'm going. His books are laid out in an easy way to find things, and I like how he lays out some great walks to take in the city. I read other books to get tips, but Rick's books are the ones that I actually take in my suitcase, to reference while I'm there.

5 out of 5 stars Rick Steves books are the best.......2007-04-07

I love the way Rick Steves looks at the world and his philosophy of travel. I have his Paris and Provence books, which are extremely useful and helpful. I wish he had one for Greece!

5 out of 5 stars Best guide for a first time visitor!.......2007-01-09

My husband and I went to Paris in October and without Rick Steves we would not have gotten nearly as much out of the trip. His guide gave us some great ideas for walking tours, tips on when to visit certain sites and overall help on making the most of the trip. We were first timers to Paris, but I will use this guide for any future trips - it is full of great information. Highly recommended!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Service!.......2007-01-07

Received this book before I received my Amazon order that I ordered at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars Great travel guide.......2006-11-11

I bought this travel guide to find some of the less obvious attractions in Paris. Not only did I find those, but I also
found some wonderful tips for places I already knew. Information about trains,
special hours, etc, were extremely helpful. It was like having a local give you tips on the
city. The only thing I thought could be improved was that the guide does not
give much information on upscale hotels and restaurants, so if you want to splurge, you need to check out
another guide book.

    Book Description

Defences for regimes of private property ownership are normally based on arguments of economic efficiency. In Property as a Guarantor of Liberty a different approach is taken, one that grounds the defence of private property ownership on the protection it affords to individual liberty. Several interesting implications emerge from the analysis, including an explanation of the desire by individuals for ownership of consumer durable goods. It follows from this analysis that constitutional limits must be in place, prior to any exercise of democratic government, to constrain overt political interference with the rights of property. The confusion that has corrupted Western attitudes, and that threatens to close off the opportunities now presented to emerging post-socialist societies, involves a failure to recognize that 'constitutional' must be placed in front of the word 'democracy' if the political equity of individuals is to contain any meaningful measure of freedom ! and autonomy.

            Book Description

This unique annual collection of key economic and statistical data on the world's smallest states, those with fewer than five million inhabitants, is an essential reference for economists, planners, and policymakers. Data on sixty-five countries is included, grouped in three categories: low-, middle- and high-income, based on their 2003 per capita GNI. The book contains fifty-one tables covering selected economic and social indicators culled from international and national sources and presents information unavailable elsewhere. As well as basic demographic information, including gender-disaggregated information where available, the tables include information on the structure of production; the structure of demand; external payments, reserves, net transfers and finance flows; exchange rate, interest rate and money supply information; and labor force data.

A detailed parallel commentary on trends in Commonwealth small states looking at growth, employment, inflation and economic policy issues permits a deeper understanding of developments behind the figures. The book also includes two topical articles: "Culture as the Fourth Pillar of Sustainable Development" by Dr. Keith Nurse, Senior Lecturer, Institute of International Relations, University of the West Indies, Trinidad and Tobago, and "Enhancing the Competitiveness of Small States" by Ms Monique Pollard, Economic Affairs Division, Commonwealth Secretariat.

As in the previous issues, the publication is in two parts. The first part provides a narrative focusing on the recent economic performance of Commonwealth small states. It also contains two feature articles: The first is a commentary on small states in the Lomé Convention and in the New ACP-EU Partnership Agreement, and the second analyzes the implications for small states of the OECD Harmful Tax Competition guidelines. These two items are of considerable interest to small states, in view of the challenges posed to their economies by globalization and the progressive liberalization of world trade. The second part of the publication provides social and economic data on small states. These are presented in 51 tables. In order to maintain the continuity of the statistical series, the “country” coverage and “country groupings based on income” are the same as those used in previous issues of this publication. Book Description

This latest work from Japanese-born anthropologist Takie Sugiyama Lebra is the first ethnographic study of the modern Japanese aristocracy. Established as a class at the beginning of the Meiji period, the kazoku ranked directly below the emperor and his family. Officially dissolved in 1947, this group of social elites is still generally perceived as nobility. Lebra gained entry into this tightly knit circle and conducted more than one hundred interviews with its members. She has woven together a reconstructive ethnography from their life histories to create an intimate portrait of a remote and archaic world.
As Lebra explores the culture of the kazoku, she places each subject in its historical context. She analyzes the evolution of status boundaries and the indispensable role played by outsiders.
But this book is not simply about the elite. It is also about commoners and how each stratum mirrors the other. Revealing previously unobserved complexities in Japanese society, it also sheds light on the universal problem of social stratification.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating analysis of Japan's hereditary elite.......1998-06-21

Professor Sugayama Lebra presents a fascinating analysis of modern Japan's hereditary elite. The focus of her analysis is the "kazuko" -- Japan's hereditary peerage of the 1871-1947 period. As part of their westernizing reforms, the Meiji oligarchs merged the Kyoto court nobles ("kuge") and the feudal lords ("daimyo") into a single artistocratic class, explicitly based on the British peerage. The "kazuko" or flowerly lineage served two functions: (1) to fill the non-elective upper chamber of the new parliament, and (2) to provide a social buffer between the revitalized Imperial Court and the rest of Japanese society. The American occupation reforms divested this hereditary elite of much its wealth and the 1947 Japanese constitution formally abolished the peerage. Nonetheless, the aristocratic pedigrees and family ties continue to play an important role in modern Japanese political, social and economic life.

Relying on informer interviews, and extensive archival and genealogical research, Sugiyama Lebra recreates the world of this aristocratic class. Topics include: lineage, elite socialization, gender roles, status negotiation, marriage and adoption, professions and status careers, and adjustment to postwar life as common citizens of the new Japan. The book also provides valuable insights into the modern development of the Japanese imperial institution.

Professor Sugiyama Lebra's book is a must read for anyone interest in contemporary Japan or the role of traditional elites in modern socities in general. This is an immensely readible book. Although targeted to a scholarly audience, this book is acessible to academics and non-academics alike.

                                              Book Description

An in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at the modern newsroom, this book explores how large corporations dominate today's media and uncovers how investigative and informative reports are being replaced by demands for high-profit, 'reader-friendly' journalism. Includes a new preface to the paperback edition.

                                              1 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere.......2003-10-03

Doug Underwood has clearly researched his topic, but unfortunately doesn't end up saying much in "When MBAs Rule the Newsroom." As the other Amazon reviewer said, you can pretty much get the main points of the book from the title and back cover, and most of the content is public knowledge. This book was SO frustrating to me because Underwood says the same exact thing in a million different word combinations. By the middle of the book, I started highlighting every sentence that basically said "old-style (Watergate-style) journalism is dead, it's the MBAs fault, the whole industry is profit-driven, and everyone is unhappy about it and at a loss for what to do to fix it." All valid points, but there is a sentence highlighted on 1 out of every 3 pages. I'm not kidding.

Overall, I found the book boring and lacking original substance. Every time I started reading a sentence that I thought was worth noting, by the time I got to the end of the sentence I would see that Underwood had noted it from other source! It was SO incredibly frustrating. I guess the book would make a good first read for a student doing a paper because it would lead directly to other sources, but I wouldn't recommend this book for someone just interested in the plight of the newspaper.

Ben Bagdikian seems to be the source for criticism and analysis on the turn the media has taken--his books are a must-read when exploring this subject. I see his name in nearly everything I read on this topic. If you're looking for an informative, yet pleasant and simple, almost fun read--c'mon, we're talking about media conglomerates here...not traditionally 'fun' stuff! :)-- try "The Business of Journalism" edited by Serrin. It's a collection of points of view from 10 or so people involved in various aspects of the industry. The short articles are interesting and informative and offer insight in a less textbook-style format. I think it would be an enjoyable and insightful read to anyone, not just a media-dork like me! Hope this helps!

                                              1 out of 5 stars Grossly overrated.......2001-12-11

Titles tell you a lot, often without meaning to. The title of this book suggests that Underwood has found all kinds of journalists who have earned MBAs getting promoted into top editors' jobs, MBA-bearing publishers barking orders in meetings with editors, and so on. Not so. Hardly an editor who holds an MBA can be found in the entire book (Mike Fancher at the Seattle Times is mentioned repeatedly, but after that, how many others were there in 1993 when this book was published or even now?). In fact, what becomes painfully obvious is how willing how many editors who don't have MBAs are to play corporate executive because of what it does for their pocketbooks and their egos--and how little faith editors have in themselves and their staffs to produce high quality journalism that the public wants and needs.

Second, the fact is that almost everything in this book was already public knowledge (found in publications such as American Journalism Review, Columbia Journalism Review, Quill, Editor & Publisher, Advertising Age, and so on). No fresh research, no fresh ideas, no fresh conclusions, and a title that is terribly misleading about the book's contents.

                                                      Book Description

RSS is sprouting all over the Web, connecting weblogs and providing news feeds. Originally developed by Netscape in 1999, RSS (which can stand for RDF Site Summary, Rich Site Summary, or Really Simple Syndication) is an XML-based format that allows web developers to describe and syndicate web site content. Using RSS files allows developers to create a data feed that supplies headlines, links, and article summaries from a web site. Other sites can then incorporate them into their pages automatically. Although RSS is in widespread use, people struggle with its confusing and sometimes conflicting documentation and versions. Content Syndication with RSS is the first book to provide a comprehensive reference to the specifications and the tools that make syndication possible.

Content Syndication with RSS offers webloggers, developers, and the programmers who support them a thorough explanation of syndication in general and RSS in particular. Written for web developers who want to offer XML-based feeds of their content, as well as developers who want to use the content that other people are syndicating, the book explores and explains metadata interpretation, different forms of content syndication, and the increasing use of web services in this field.

This concise volume begins with an introduction to content syndication on the Internet: its purpose, limitations, and traditions, and answers the question of why would you consider "giving your content away" like this? Next, the book delves into the architecture of content syndication with an overview of the entire system, from content author to end user on another site. You'll follow the flow of data: content, referral data, publish-and-subscribe calls, with a detailed look at the protocols and standards possible at each step. Topics covered in the book include:

If you're interested in producing your own RSS feed, this step-by-step guide to implementation is the book you'll want in hand.

3 out of 5 stars Good book, but a little wordy.......2004-10-08

RSS is just XML in a certain format. At its core, it's pretty basic.

The author goes into MUCH detail about the history of the format as well as older (and nowdays rarely used) RSS versions.

It was interesting reading the history, and the details on the format and extentions was great. It really helped me get up to speed on RSS.

I would like to have seen more discussion about what RSS could do though. If I was consulting the author on the 2nd version, I'd have suggested dropping the info about older formats and putting some info in about the new uses of RSS...like iPodder, or the Presidential debate feeds.

If you want to get started quickly, this is a good way to jump in.

                                                      3 out of 5 stars A Little Misleading.......2004-09-26

For the most part, industry standard RSS is a very short list of simple XML elements. Standard RSS Readers only look for those standardized tags to create the display. You can verify that by opening almost any public RSS XML document and just looking at it. RSS is simple enough that you could probably pick it up by just looking at a well formed sample file and reading the short syntax document provided for free by the creators (UserLand Software for RSS 2.0 or the RSS-DEV Working Group for RSS 1.0 - FeedValidator.org has links to the documentation). After reading this title, I am a little confused as to whom target audience is supposed to be.

The first issue I had with the book is the coverage of versions. The author has chosen to write not only about the two current versions (1.0 and 2.0 - two companies, two separate tracks of standardized tags), but the preceding versions for each. I don't buy a Word 2003 book to learn about Word 6. The layout could serve as a reference guide for the tags when you're done, but again, the vendor provided syntax guides are easier to reference. Next, the author makes some assumptions that aren't publicized; you should be really (really) familiar with XML to understand many chapters in the book, and you should also develop in Perl (as there are numerous, lengthy Perl scripts used as demos). I've created many RSS Feeds for both company Intranets as well as Internet sites, and given the simplicity of RSS, I can tell you that you don't need either to create a feed on your own.

The back cover claims the book is a "step-by-step guide to implementation", but it really isn't. The author has written a very nice book on the general history and specs of standardized RSS, but then fills the remaining pages with a general syntax overview of other commonly used RSS XML namespaces (not really demo-ing them), ideas for extending RSS with your own XML namespaces (which is great, but really just produces a customized XML document that industry standard RSS reader's won't know what to do with) , and then transforming other site's RSS Feeds into your own conglomerated XHTML page with various Perl conversion scripts, SOAP tie-ins, etc.

For the percentage of people that already know RSS and are looking to really go into advanced manipulations - this is a great title and I recommend it. For everyone else who just want to quickly learn the very simple syntax, this is a misleading title and I would recommend saving your money and reading the vendor's free syntax guides, or talking a quick on-line course. You'll find RSS easy enough without this book.

4 out of 5 stars One of the few titles on RSS. And it's good, too!.......2004-06-03

This book really is a must-have (or must-read-once) for anyone interested in RSS syndication technology.

It contains a lot of information on creating RSS feeds and related scripts. Most of the non-RSS code is in Perl, so if you don't use Perl, some of the book might not be handy.

I was disappointed that the book didn't cover much of the user's end of syndication... things like scraping and RSS readers themselves, but that's obviously another book.

This is a really nice title if you're interested in the techie side of RSS, but if you're an end user, there won't be too much here for you aside from the bits of history.

2 out of 5 stars didn't get me started at all!.......2004-05-03

I was expecting this book to show me somewhere in the first hundred pages an example of how to create an RSS feed. Instead I got wayyyy too much history, and I couldn't find a "hello, world" example.

I grant that the history is important, and this book will probably fit in well to the cadre of books that emerge on RSS over the next year or two. However, this year, this isn't the book I needed.

4 out of 5 stars Best PRINTED resource about the topic available today.......2004-03-27

I must underscore the reason why I capitalized the word "PRINTED" in the title of this review. This is indeed the best book about the topic of RSS (RDF Site Summary), which has become increasingly more important since blogs jumped out of tech obscurity to become a mainstream form of web-enabled information dissemination. However, nowadays the topic is too dynamic (there's too much happening these days in the field of RSS) to make Hammersley's book a comprehensive and current enough resource for all matters and purposes.

As a general introductory reading, it's the best book out there. But once you get your feet deep enough in the RSS waters, you need to go online and search for the current APIs, Web Services, News Aggregators and RSS/Blog Directories, which is the area where the book will fall behind the fast growth of this area. Overall, very well structured, even with an appendix on the XML you need to know, in order to be able to deal with RSS.
