I bought this book because I liked it when I read it. I shouldn't really rate it less than a 5 because I knew what was going to be in it before my purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome & Interesting Read.......2007-04-12

If your a fan of the JTHM series or Jhonen Vasquez, this is another book to own. Based upon a child named "Squee" who lives next door to JTHM. Squee has a very traumatic childhood, but remains a loving yet constantly haunted little boy. Also "filled with meanwhiles", the book also expands on other various storylines seen throughout all of Vasquez' work.

5 out of 5 stars SQUEE!!!.......2007-01-12

what can i say it's Squee, if you read JTHM you'll like this book.

        Book Description

In this book, Jean-Pascal Benassy attempts to integrate into a single unified framework dynamic macroeconomic models reflecting such diverse lines of thought as general equilibrium theory, imperfect competition, Keynesian theory, and rational expectations. He begins with a simple microeconomic synthesis of imperfect competition and nonclearing markets in general equilibrium under rational expectations. He then applies this framework to a large number of dynamic macroeconomic models, covering such topics as persistent unemployment, endogenous growth, and optimal fiscal-monetary policies. The macroeconomic methodology he uses is similar in spirit to that of the popular real business cycles theory, but the scope is much wider. All of the models are solved "by hand," making the underlying economic mechanisms particularly clear.

            Description:
The competitive market model is paradoxical. In perfect competition, agents cannot influence price: they only select an output quantity. Such passive behavior does not conform to the intuitive notion of competition. This paper describes an experiment which demonstrates that near or even at a competitive equilibrium price, competition is undiminished. A substantial difference between the performance of sellers and buyers frequently results from this vigorous competition, even with low price variability and approximate efficiency. In double auction experiment sessions conducted with both automated and human agents, exogenous variation of the pace of asks and bids of automated agents demonstrates that the performance difference between sellers and buyers results primarily from a difference between the pace of asks and bids. If the buyers' pace is slower than sellers' pace, buyers make price concessions less frequently than sellers so that prices move below the equilibrium price. Then more buyers become active and fewer sellers remain active. Prices stabilize when changes to the numbers of active buyers and sellers offset the superior bargaining capability of one side or the other. In competitive equilibrium, to a first approximation agents are price takers, but that does not preclude vigorous competition: competitive behavior moves to the dimension of bargaining pace.

              Description:
This paper studies several stochastic programming formulations of dynamic oligopolistic games under uncertainty. We argue that one of the models, namely games with probabilistic scenarios (GPS), provides an appropriate formulation. For such games, we show that symmetric players earn greater expected profits as demand volatility increases. This result suggests that even in an increasingly volatile market, players may have an incentive to participate in the market. The key to our approach is the so-called scenario formulation of stochastic programming. In addition to several modeling insights, we also discuss the application of GPS to the electricity market in Ontario, Canada. The examples presented in this paper illustrate that this approach can address dynamic games that are clearly out of reach for dynamic programming, a common approach in the literature on dynamic games.

                Description:
This paper investigates whether technological shocks, constructed to be consistent with the observed cross-country income dispersion, are also capable of accounting for development regularities related to capital accumulation. This question is approached via a quantitative theoretical analysis of an integrated world economy model. An open economy framework constrains country heterogeneity to be consistent with international capital flows. Moreover, it enables the study of distinctively open economy development facts. The model produces time-invariant cross-sectional distributions for development variables, whose properties are quantitatively compared with the Penn World Table data set. The model generates too little dispersion in capital-output ratios and investment rates. However, it is consistent with the relative importance of investment, saving, and international capital flows for economic development.

                  Book Description

The developments in economic theory in the 1950s served to pinpoint important underlying assumptions in the study of market institutions. The conflict between observed institutions - spot markets for commodities, financial markets - and the benchmark interpretation - forward markets for commodities, allowing all trade to take place at a single point in time, became apparent. This led to the introduction of new equilibrium concepts; temporary equilibria, spot-market equilibria and monetary equilibria. The emphasis was on the possibilities to transfer purchasing power over time or over states using spot markets involving assets or money. This book focuses on the developments in the theory of incomplete markets and overlapping generations economies where income transfers over time or across states are restricted either by available assets or by the infeasibility of contracts with unborn generations. It bridges the gap between standard textbooks on microeconomics and more advanced expositions.

                    Book Description

The labor markets of important OECD countries show a similar picture: high wages and low unemployment for skilled workers and low wages but high unemployment for low-skilled workers. During the last 10 years this fact has been studied under the hypothesis of "skill-biased technological change" within the context of endogenous growth models. Recent research, however, has shown that the employment and wage differentials vary at business cycle frequencies. This book provides an empirical and theoretical examination of the short- and medium run impacts of technological advances on the employment and wages of workers which differ in their earned educational degree. Furthermore, by introducing labor market frictions and wage setting institutions the author shows the importance of such imperfections in order to replicate empirical facts. Due to the introduction of employment protection mechanisms and minimum wages the analysis accounts for key facts of continental European labor markets.

                      Description:
We consider a pure exchange economy where one risky and one riskless security are traded in discrete time. Individual demands are expressed as fractions of individual wealth and depend on traders' forecasts about future price movement. Introducing the 'Equilibrium Market Line' as the locus of all possible equilibrium returns, we show that, irrespectively of the number of traders and of their investment behavior, the economy possesses isolated equilibria where a single agent dominates the market and continuous manifolds of equilibria where many agents hold finite wealth shares. Moreover, we prove that no global dominance order relation among strategies can be defined.

                        Book Description

This book offers insight into the current developments in mathematical economics. The book is intended for a broad audience and technicalities are kept to a minimum. The issues addressed include general equilibrium, price competition, auctions, environmental policy, networks, dynamic (in)stability and bounded rationality. Moreover, the book contains a survey and appraisal of the work of Claus Weddepohl, to whom the volume is dedicated. In his academic career, Claus Weddepohl made important contributions to the development of mathematical economics. He did so in his own writings on general equilibrium theory, the theory of markets and on economic dynamics. He was also a stimulating teacher and inspired the scientific research of many of his colleagues.

                          5 out of 5 stars Makes a great gift.......2003-03-22

This funny book makes a great gift for someone of any age. I have enjoyed reading through it a couple times and it makes a great addition to my favorites on the coffee table.

                          5 out of 5 stars "SERIOUSLY FUNNY".......2003-01-21

From literally cover-to-cover, Shots and Echoes approaches some serious issues in life with an often rare, but very necessary, comic twist. With subject matter ranging from the modern technology craze, to the inevitable journey into old age, each page made me smile or laugh, sit back and think, and then smile again. Whether you enjoy reading, or just skimming through, Shots and Echoes has an equal amount of humorous photos which further illustrate the already witty prose. I highly recommend this book for any collection, and have recently found out that it also makes a great gift for others. "Shots and Echoes Seriocomic Rambling" is definitely a winner!

                          5 out of 5 stars A Satirical Masterpiece!.......2003-01-13

It was hard not to laugh as I read the book from cover to cover, although there was also a great realism within the pages. Still in my 20's, I was able to relate to the writing as well as the pictures as I have seen much of this in my own life with my grandparents. At first one may think that this book is driven toward people of an older age, although I found out very quickly that this book is suitable for everyone! When first reading, humor is what came to mind. Although, this book was quickly able to touch me as well because of its underlying serious issues. I think anyone who reads this book would take something away from it, or at very least, get a great laugh, and recommend this book for anyone.

                          5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Wit!.......2003-01-13

I recently received a copy of this book and am enjoying every bit of it! The author portrays life in a funny, yet serious manner that we all can relate to. I particularly enjoyed the photographs which accompany the writing. I would highly recommend this book to everyone, regardless of their age!

                            Book Description

The collaboration of Schubert and the poet Wilhelm MÜller produced some of the best loved of nineteenth-century lieder--in particular Die schöne MÜllerin. Professor Youens shows how this archetypal tale of love and rejection is reflected in the poet's own experience. She considers other poets' explorations of the subject, and looks at other musical settings of MÜller's mill poems. Above all she examines MÜller's permutation of the literary legends as an exploration of erotic obsession, delusion, frenzy, disillusionment and death and the way in which Schubert altered MÜller's vision when the poetic cycle became a musical text.

                              Book Description

This guide to Schubert's much-loved song cycle explores both the music and the poetry from a variety of perspectives. It includes biography and cultural history, literary interpretation, source studies, and musical analysis.

The genesis of Wilhelm Muller's poems, which began as a literary salon game in 1816, and the music, composed soon after Schubert discovered that he had contracted syphilis, is discussed in the first two chapters, which also include little-known information about the poet, the premiere of the cycle, and Eduard Hanslick's critiques later in the nineteenth century. The chapters on the poetry discuss Muller's uneasy relationship with the tenets of Romanticism; the influence of Goethe, folk poems, and medieval poetry on Die schone Mullerin; and provide a reading of each of the poems, which are reproduced in German and English translation. The last and lengthiest chapter consists of brief analytical commentaries on each of the twenty songs in Schubert's masterpiece.

This is my first purchase from the Cambridge Music Handbooks series and I'm very impressed. It's been a while since I've gleaned so much from such a brief read. First of all, the author treats the poetry with refreshing seriousness. If you've ever been put off by the apparent insipidity of Mueller's poetry, this may be the book to change your mind. Most of the musical analysis has to with the text-music relationship, which heightens appreciation for the poet and composer alike. I certainly came away with a much more confident sense of the drama and unity of the cycle. Highly recommended. If you are a musician tackling the song cycle for the first time, I would almost say it is indispensible.

This book should only be read by children. The mistake I made was making the assumption this would be a "Making of..." book with lots of photos, art and other behind-the-scenes materials from the film. The title, "Scrapbook", suggests this, but, alas, it's nothing more than a children's book with some blown-up photos from the film. If you're a kid and you loved "Lost World," then this book is a way to rekindle those memories. If you're a film afficiando looking for some interesting tidbits on how the film was created, don't look for that book here...

I thought it was interesting for one reason, and that was that it has pictures of the film that have been cut.

Here is a gift for the thousands of devoted listeners who made Jerome Stern one of the best-loved commentators on National Public Radio. For over a decade--first locally and then nationwide, Jerome Stern delighted audiences with the wry, astute mini-essays he called Radios. "You gave great pleasure to my ears," one fan wrote after tuning in en route to work. "More therapeutic than a round on the Stairmaster," another maintained. Nothing was too large or too small to engage Jerome Stern's interest. Along with the mysteries of the universe, he wrote about kids vs. adults, the moods of teachers, and summer camp. He wrote about chocolate, the anxieties of plane travel, and the night fantasies of husbands. And in a suite called "Patient," broadcast for a week on "All Things Considered," he considered his own experience of illness. All in all, these pieces, whether cautioning or celebrating or simply turning over ideas (to see what makes them tick), add up to a freewheeling autobiography of a man who was curious about everything. Now, with this book, readers and listeners can recapture his words and the familiar musing voice.

This is a beautifully written book. It's lovely. And it's short, made up of a number of small, tight, very nice mini-essays. Mark Twain once sent a long letter to a freind with an apology, that he did not have time to write a short letter. Short and good takes a lot more time than long and boring. This is a well crafted collection worth reading.

I am lucky to have had the opportunity to be a student of John Carlis, so the readability and quality of this book was no surprise. Anyone who has even discussed computer science with him would assure you that his focus is not simply on amassing tools, but on mastering them. This book was loaned to me on the job, and served as an excellent introduction, and as a wonderful reference.

The simplicity and power of LDS makes it an excellent tool for software developers. In a discussion with Carlis, he explained to me the appeal that LDS had to him. He said its simple, limited set of components allows you to use data modeling not as a reference to understand software, but as a way to plan it, and think about the consequences of each decision you make.

Buy this because it's a great read, a great introduction, and an invaluable reference. No software developer's desk should be without it.

5 out of 5 stars A great deal of original material -- suitable for both new and experienced data modelers.......2005-12-28

I just finished a semester-long graduate course that used this book as one of three textbooks. I am an experienced, mid-career data modeler and developer of database-centered applications and I have used entity-relationship diagrams for years, so I was initially a little concerned that this text would not have much new for me. I was also suspicious of the author's notation because it leaves out a number of syntactical elements I was accustomed to using in UML and other data modeling languages. However, I was very pleased and surprised with the amount of valuable and original content in this book, and I have significantly altered my modeling practices as a result.

This book is written in a quirky but very readable style, and I recommend it for both experienced data modelers who want to improve the quality and efficiency of their work, and for anyone who wants to start learning about data modeling.

Beginning data modelers will especially benefit from
                                            1) the emphasis on logical data modeling and user communication,
                                            2) the explanation of how to choose good names and identifiers, and
                                            3) the examination of common patterns that appear in almost every data model, how to recognize them, and how to interpret them.

Experienced data modelers who have already grappled with those issues on past projects will gain further insight from the authors' coherent systemization of those topics, but should also appreciate and benefit from
                                            1) the content-neutral process laid out for iteratively evolving a diagram through controlled interactions with users,
                                            2) the investigation of the underlying principles and forces that shape a data model, with many illustrating examples drawn from real-world projects, and
                                            3) the intellectually rigorous analysis of the notation and syntax used to represent a data model, and the semantic interpretation of each structure.

If I had to identify one set of people who would get the most out of this book, I would select software developers who learned data modeling on the job, or who are starting to learn it, and who would like a cohesive intellectual foundation for what they are doing. This book can help you go from being a "pretty good" data modeler who can handle modeling familiar data to being an expert data modeler with a strong theoretical basis for your work who can quickly develop high-quality data models regardless of your personal level of understanding of the underlying subject area.

5 out of 5 stars Very important book........2002-09-12

                                            The secret is out!

I've been using the techniques described in this book for years because one of the authors taught me. I've used them to model data about research science, business, and topology. Now others can learn it too.

Carlis cured me of normalization. There's a difference between normalization and "normal forms". A goal of modeling is to produce databases in high normal forms - Boyce-Codd Normal Form, fifth normal form, etc... Most modelers think the only way to do this is through normalization, a specific process that step-by-step improves to a draft model. This book shows how to avoid that process completely. I used to do normalization. Now I use the conversational techniques of this book to reach high normal forms sooner. One thing I always hated about Normalization was that I usually did it after talking to users, which means I was making decisions that the users should have been making. I have not performed normalization in at least ten years. Yet I still produce databases in high normal form. This book does include a chapter about normalization, with normal forms up to fifth, so you can see for yourself how the technique produces high-normal-form databases. If you learned that normalization was essential part of data modeling, this chapter will help you learn this different way of working. If you are new to data modeling, you should start with this book to avoid learning normalization altogether. The principles of high normal forms are important, but the process of normalization is ludicrous.

This is a book about data modeling, not physical database design. It concentrates on the modeling in users' language. The naming conventions it recommends are based on guidelines of language and categories. If you follow these naming guidelines, you will not need to learn a huge list of more specific, special-case naming rules.

I also like what Carlis and MaGuire say about constraints. By following their constraint advice, I have become a much faster data modeler, and my team mates (programmers, DBAs) do not have to wait so long for me to finish my work. It also helps me keep my data models flexible, good for a changing business environment.

This book has more examples than any book on modeling I have ever seen. I stopped counting sample data models when I got to 300.

The hardest part of application design is understanding the user's data. This book concentrates on solving that problem, leaving the technical details of database design to other books.

3 out of 5 stars Beware- there's alot more to Data Modeling than this!.......2001-11-21

I disagree that a person could become a "master" data modeler if the contents of this book are the complete set of skills in their arsenal. While the book outlines some good techniques for interviewing end users and basic data modeling skills, there is alot more involved in data modeling than what is covered here.

As an experienced data modeler who works with large, complex data models in a constantly changing business, I find I do not refer to this book at all. The book excludes common data modeling constructs that I have found very useful, including subtypes and supertypes. The book does not explain the difference between conceptual, logical, and physical data modeling. (It covers techniques used to capture conceptual/logical level data, but nowhere does it explain that or the difference between this type of model and a physical model, and why and when you'd need one or the other.)

The book does not cover normalization, which, once one leaves the interview with end users, one will need to understand. The book does not mention data integration with other systems or databases, how this topic is important and could (and often should) arise in interviews with end users.

Some of the topics covered I found shallow and incomplete, for example, how to name things in a data model. The authors take a parochial view by ignoring real world issues such as using consistent names across database and organizations, and avoiding naming things for what they are used for, not what they are.

As a practicing data modeler, I find my users aren't as naieve about data models as Carlis and Maguire assume them to be. I often am asked why I am modeling data in a given way. In my view, this book does not address the "why" - why do you model the data in the way suggested, and what happens if you don't. When I can answer these questions well for my customers, I earn approval, and this book doesn't equip one to do so.

In sum, my belief is that this book contains about 1/4 of the information a person needs to know to become a "master" data modeler. It's a good starter book if you are a novice data modeler or are having trouble gathering information from business subject matter experts, but if you really want to become an expert data modeler, I'd recommend continuing beyong this book. I prefer 'Data Modeling Essentials 2nd Edition' by Graeme Simsion

5 out of 5 stars A practical and direct approach to data modeling.......2001-07-12

This book will be on my table always. It cuts through the computer science's obsession for esoteric notations and undue rigor (that scares the end users even before the analyst has had a chance to begin!) and puts the user needs at their right place: right in the center. I have used this methed several times now with exciting results. Users are more forthcoming, there are lesser I-thought-this-when-you-said-that instances. Two thumbs up for the excellent work!!!
