Eoin Colfer's bestselling antihero is back in Artemis Fowl: The Arctic Incident--the superb sequel to the hyper-hyped Artemis Fowl, shortlisted for the Whitbread Children's Book of the Year. The Arctic Incident sees the slightly older, perhaps slightly more mellow arch-criminal Artemis recovered from his last adventure, richer now that he has his half of a hoard of fairy gold, and happier since the Clarice Starlingesque superfairy Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon returned his mother's ailing mind to full health.

But there is still much unfinished business: Artemis Fowl Sr. disappeared when a daring escapade designed to free his family from their criminal--not to mention deeply lucrative--past and move the family's assets into legitimate enterprises went horribly wrong. Held captive by the Mafiya (the Russian organized crime syndicate) for over two years, he has been declared officially dead, but Artemis Jr. knows in his heart (yes, he does have one) that his beloved father is still alive, and he is determined to find him. Meanwhile Captain Short is temporarily on assignment to Customs and Excise as punishment for letting Fowl separate her and her People from their gold and is finding her stakeout duties a little dull. It soon becomes obvious that the pair have need of each other's considerable skills, and before long they are on track for an adventure that will ultimately have far-reaching consequences for both of them.

If you enjoyed the first book, you won't be disappointed by the second. Initially the pace is a little slower, and the slightly more mellow Artemis is certainly a tad unnerving at first (particularly as one of the things that made him such an unusual character was the fact that there was something distinctly unlikable about him), but once the sparks between Holly and Artemis begin to fly, and the adventure that tests their endurance to their emotional, physical, and intellectual limits begins, the pages just keep on turning.

The high-tech hocus pocus, the complex underworld, and the James Bond-style storyline will keep even the most reluctant reader enthralled. Add to the mix a fair dollop of humor, the occasional sprinkling of right-on commentary about the state of the planet, and enough hooks in the story to ensure you will be clamoring for the next book. This chilling, thrilling adventure is a seriously cool (in more ways than one!) must-read for anyone age 9 and older. --Susan Harrison

4 out of 5 stars "He is alive, and I will find him".......2007-08-18

In the first book of this series Colfer introduced us to the genius-criminal mind of Artemis Fowl. The enterprising teenager was able to steal a fair amount of gold from the fairies, in his quest to return his family to its proper place and recover his father. But we also got to see a more human side of Artemis and understand that he was not exactly as he was portraying himself to the rest of the world. In this book these traits start to come out more and more.

We know that Artewmis' father has disappeared in an accident a couple of year ago and that there have been no news about his situation. In this book we are taken back in time to presence the moment in which a group of Russians fish a man out of the water in the Arctic Circle. The man shows sever frostbite but is alive and has personal effects that suggest he is extremely wealthy. Is it Artermis' father? Artemis certainly believes so. He gets a video via email that shows the battered man with a sign around his neck saying Zvdravstvutye syn (Hello son) and a request for ransom. He immediately starts the preparations to get his father back home.

In the meantime, closer to the center of the Earth, the fairy world is rocked. Captain Holly Short has been placed on surveillance following the unfortunate Fowl incident. She is not happy with this, but she is in the right place, because there is an attack by the B'wa Kell (the goblin army). The most disturbing fact is that they are using class A-human technology, which means that have been dealing with Mud Men. Holly immediately suspects Artemis is involved, or maybe she just wants that to be true.

These events throw Artemis and his faithful and skilled bodyguard, Butler, together with the fairies once more. All our favorite characters are back, including Captain Short, Root, Foaley the Centaur, and Mulch the dwarf. The action is fast-paced and there are plenty of twists and turns along the way. I think that the author took great strides in terms of character development in this installment and that gives him high points in my book. There is only one thing that bothered me and that is a fault I have seen many times before, especially in movies. Mistakes related to chess. In this case, the author trying to show Artemis' genius mentions that he beat a Grandmaster in six moves, which of course is silly. I should be used to these by now, but they still make me cringe.

This series is looking great, and I am already eager to read the next book. What will happen with Artemis in terms of his good vs. evil battle? I bet this is a question that most readers are asking themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book.......2007-07-15

This is a great book for Pre-Teens and Teens alike. It is about a boy who is a super genius, and how his life has become intwined in the hidden underground world of fairies and other creatures. Artemis is a criminal mastermind, but he always learns that good beats evil in the end. However he may forget this lesson in time for the next book. This book is a sequel to the first Artemis Fowl book. I recommend reading it first, but it isn't required.

4 out of 5 stars A great book for all Artemis fans out there.......2007-05-21

Irish criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl has discovered a fairy race underground. He has extorted gold from them and the fairy police- LEPrecon
have been on his tail ever since for supplying power cells to the Goblin gangs. This thread continues from the previous book on 'Artemis Fowl'.

But that's not the half of it. The Russian Mafia are holding Artemis's father to ransom in the Arctic Circle. On top of that - an evil pixie plans the destruction of the fairy civilization, and Artemis realizes that even a wicked genius needs help sometimes. They can come from the most unlikely places...

Colfer made this story fast, humorous and very exciting. From mind-wipers to laser guns through battery-powered crafts and anti-radiation suits, it makes gadgets from James Bond's Q look like child's play.

I like the futuristic gadgetry that Colfer invented; it gave me a rather cool imagination of how these new weapons could come to use. For example, there are 2 types of mind-wipes, 1. that wipes out any previous events 2. wipes out the total memory; Neutrino 3000, is a laser gun that vaporizes stuff .. and so on.

I'd highly recommend this book to kids and teens who have a vast imagination, like in cartoons, and action packed story with genius twists. Read on, but things are about to get frosty!

Deep in a wintry lake in Russia lies a freighter with tons of cargo along with the multi-millionaire Mr. Fowl, Artemis' father. With no warning at all, the back of the freighter is blown to parts. In a matter of minutes, the ship sinks taking everyone with it, including Mr. Fowl. Back in Ireland everyone thinks that Artemis' dad is dead, but Artemis still senses that his dad is still out there. So he calls up an old friend: Captain Holly Short. She has her own problems though. Someone is supplying the goblins with AA batteries to power one of the most powerful weapons underground. The worst part, the goblins are planning a full-blown attack on the underground city of Haven. Here's the fishy part though, the goblins aren't even smart enough to turn on a light switch. Holly knows that someone else is behind this, but who? Will Artemis ever find his father? Will the magical creatures stop the goblin attack on Haven? Read the book to find out! Second book in the series. I highly recommend it!

I didn't discover the delight that is the Artemis Fowl series until a week ago, when I read Artemis Fowl (Artemis Fowl, Book 1) in one day. So, of course, I had to pick up a copy of THE ARCTIC INCIDENT right away, to see if it was as good as the first. It definitely is, and in my own humble opinion, I think I liked it even better than the first book. There are points throughout the book where Artemis, now thirteen, shows a softer, more vulnerable side that I truly enjoyed. Don't get me wrong, he's still an evil genius, but he's an evil genius with heart, and you can't help but love him.

Now that Angeline Fowl is out of her depression, thanks to some fairy magic from Captain Holly Short, she's sent Artemis back to Saint Bartelby's School for Young Gentlemen in Ireland. Artemis is having quite a large amount of fun flumoxing the school's counselor, Dr. Po, when he gets an urgent message from Butler, his bodyguard/butler/majordomo--it seems that Artemis Fowl the First is alive in Russia, being held for ransom by the Russian Mafiya.

Young Artemis, of course, immediately sets out to devise a scheme to rescue his father. It's been almost two years since Artemis Senior was last heard from, and his son is most eager to bring him home. Before he can work out a devious scheme, though, he's visited by none other than Captain Short and her superior, Commander Root, and brought down to Haven City and into Police Plaza. It seems the goblin triad, the B'Wa Kell, have a human counterpart aiding in their smuggling, and Artemis the Second is, quite justly I believe, suspected of being that human.

The fairies soon realize, however, that this time Artemis Fowl isn't the bad guy in this problem. But now they'd like Artemis and Butler's help in figuring out who is behind the allaince between the goblins and the Mud Men--and Artemis is quite willing to help them out, in exchange for the fairies help in rescuing his father.

What follows is an action-packed story of good versus evil below ground, with deceptions, backstabbing, and revenge taking center stage. As Holly, Root, Butler, and Artemis race to save Haven City from being destroyed, some of the same characters from the first book make appearances--Foaly, Mulch Diggums, Cudgeon, and Captain Trouble. There's also a new foe in THE ARCTIC INCIDENT, Opal Koboi, to be dealt with.

I highly recommend the ARTEMIS FOWL series to anyone and everyone. Highly enjoyable, thoroughly entertaining, and not soon forgotten.

i only reccommend reading this if youve read ARTEMIS FOWL, though, because it is second in the series and Im a big believer in reading series's in order.

4 out of 5 stars Easy and fun.......2004-06-20

Like the first in the series, it's a good, fun and quick read. I found the internal politics of the fairy world interesting and nicely complex. My only complaint is that this story didn't quite have the same tight pacing as the first.

I liked Artemis Fowl: Arctic Incident very much. The plot was well made and the characters were really memorable. What I liked about the plot was that I couldn't tell what was going to happen next. This book was very well written for a teenage level.
Eventhough the book was well written, the author could have been more descriptive. When ever the author introduces a character he sometimes doesn't mention all that you need to know for that character to really understand the book. Sometimes. Besides that, I thought the book was very good.
I would not recommend this book to anybody under the High school/Middle school level reading level. For that reason, the book contains many challenging words and is, at parts, hard to read. This book was very good and kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time I read it. It is truely one of my favorite.

                          Book Description

An athlete becomes a movie star; a waiter rises to manage a chain of nightclubs; a movie scenarist takes to writing restaurant reviews. Intrepid women hunt bears, drive in automobile races, and fly, first in balloons and then in airplanes. Sensational crimes jump from city streets onto the screen almost before the pistols have had a chance to cool. Paris in the Twenties? Fitzgerald's New York? Early Hollywood? No, tsarist Russia in the last decades before the Revolution.

In Russia at Play, Louise McReynolds recreates a vibrant, rapidly changing culture in rich detail. Her account encompasses the "legitimate" stage, vaudeville, nightclubs, restaurants, sports, tourism, and the silent movie industry. McReynolds reveals a pluralist and dynamic society, and shows how the new icons of mass culture affected the subsequent gendering of identities.

The rapid industrialization and urbanization of the late tsarist period spawned dramatic social changes-an urban middle class and a voracious consumer culture demanded new forms of entertainment. The result was the rapid incursion of commercial values into the arts and the athletic field and unprecedented degrees of social interaction in the new nightclubs, vaudeville houses, and cheap movie houses. Traditional rules of social conduct shifted to greater self-fulfillment and self-expression, values associated with the individualism and consumerism of liberal capitalism.

Leisure-time activities, McReynolds finds, allowed Russians who partook of them to recreate themselves, to develop a modern identity that allowed for different senses of the self depending on the circumstances. The society that spawned these impulses would disappear in Russia for decades under the combined blows of revolution, civil war, and collectivization, but questions of personal identity are again high on the agenda as Russia makes the transition from a collectivist society to one in which the dominant ethos remains undefined.

                            Book Description

For fifty years David Attenborough has entertained, educated, and generally enchanted millions worldwide with his pursuit of the secrets of life in its many guises. For such groundbreaking television series as Life on Earth, The Private Life of Plants, and The Life of Birds, he has traveled to the ends of the earth to give viewers their first (and often only) close look at some of nature's wonders--from the great wildebeest migration to the blooming of desert cacti. Now Attenborough invites readers to travel with him once more, as he reflects on a life at least as interesting as any he's managed to capture on camera.

Life on Air begins when, at twenty-four, Attenborough throws over what looks to be a staid future as a "gentleman publisher" for an uncertain position in the BBC's fledgling television service. An adventure in itself (with primitive equipment and unpredictable personalities), broadcasting work involves the Cambridge-educated naturalist in hilarious attempts to improve the upstart Talks Department. Then the discovery of a coelacanth fish off the Comoro Islands offers him his first chance as a producer, and his career introducing wildlife to the public takes off in earnest.

From his first expedition--a junket to Sierra Leone to find the elusive Bald-headed Rock Crow--to his most recent, Attenborough conducts readers on a life journey as instructive as it is enthralling. Rich with insights into nature and behind-the-scenes glimpses into broadcasting history, it is also filled with adventure and humor. Attenborough's storytelling powers are legendary, and they don't fail him as he recounts how he came to stand in rat-infested caves in Venezuela, confront wrestling crocodiles, abseil down a rainforest tree in his late sixties, and wake with the lioness Elsa sitting on his chest. His story ranges from British Guinea to the Zambesi, from Borneo to Madagascar, from the darkest depths of caves to the canopies of the loftiest trees. With quiet erudition, searching curiosity, and generous wit, the world's best-known and most beloved naturalist documents a life that reflects his changing time and our natural world as well as his own irrepressible character.

5 out of 5 stars Attenborough at his best - insightful & entertaining.......2003-07-09

I love this book. As a kid I used to sit glued to the TV watching Attenborough's programmes, such as the series 'Life on Earth' and countless others, bringing exotic places and the wonders of natural world into our living rooms. This book is an autobiography focused on David Attenborough's long and unparalleled BBC career starting from the birth of the TV medium in the 40's and 50's up untill today. What shines through in this book is vintage Attenborough: A true passion for his vocation, and an indefatigable desire to bring the most fascinating aspects of natural history to our TV screens. In a time when a lot of TV is hopelessly pre-digested and bland, Attenborough stands out more than ever, and so does this book. Read it an enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Simply a great book by a fascinating person.......2002-12-20

I have watched David Attenboroughs TV documentaries for years and have consistently found them to be unrivalled in their ability to bring the subject matter to life in a way no other presenter can. This book maintains that tradition. As you read the book you travel with the author and what a trip it is. He is an immensely likable person who has led a fascinating life. The book is also well constructed, highly readable and offers a host of insights into both the author and the natural world. I would strongly recommend it to you.

David Attenborough's 'Life on Air' gives a fascinating insight into the work of a true gentle man of the airwaves.

The book is entirely readible with several unexpected laughs in store.

A master at understating his own achievements, Attenborough tells the story of his work with the BBC, spanning an incredible fifty years. Often facing the worst inconveniences of tropical insects for days on end to get illusive shots of nature's wonders, he has tirelessly laboured to bring precious knowledge to the world of the richness of our planet.

                            Highly recommended.

While mentioning several highpoints in his childhood, David Attenborough's book mainly covers his working career upon graduation from university. Most people will be familiar with his animal and natural world documentaries from the late 80s onwards. I was surprised that he almost fell into the BBC and that he first started his involvement in natural history in the 1950s. He covers in great detail the problems encountered in broadcasting live from the studio during the infancy of television and the limitations of filming in the wild with basic equipment. David Attenborough, besides being famous for his documentaries, is also one of TV's pioneers. For a long time as well, he was senior management within the BBC and largely responsible for a lot of the programming that that boradcaster produced in the 60s and 70s. This surprised me as I was only familiar with his later documentary work.

Told with a lot of humour, the reader will meet all manner of fascinating people and animals in every corner of the world. This man has done more in his life than any of us will ever do and he has shared it with us on screen and in this marvellous book.

After writing 2 glowing reviews for other books in the Pogue Press series I knew that the only way to go was down. Well, that might be a little harsh. I don't have any problems with this book by David Pogue himself, it's just I don't know how useful this book is. Microsoft really outdid themselves when they released Windows XP, and it was developed with the most novice of users in mind. Even at the low retail price that this book lists at, I just don't know how necessary it really is. Nicely written, good content, but only the greenest of computer users would probably find this book useful.
