5 out of 5 stars Informative without too much information.......2007-10-23

I bought this book for my daughter on the recommendation of several friends. She is 8, but some of her slightly older friends and cousins are starting to go through physical changes, so I figured that there would be a lot of questions coming. The first 1/2 or so of this book explains how to take care of your body - keeping your body clean from head to toe, eating right, and staying away from those things that are harmful (smoking, drugs, drinking). Later in the book, there is a small portion on body image and bulemia/anorexia. It then delves into the world of the hormone changes that accompany puberty. There is an instruction guide of how to measure for a bra, how to select a bra, and how to use pads and tampons. There is also a lot of 'what if' questions and answers that deal with situations that a girl new to periods might experience. I have just started on this book with my daughter and am explaining things slowly since she has not undergone any of these changes yet herself. Each section has its own header, so if there is a topic that you are not comfortable with yet, you can mark it or skip it until a later time. I sure wish that I had had this book when I was starting to develop and starting my period. It sure explains more than the talk I received and the film we didn't watch until 5th grade!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for a 10 year old..................2007-10-19

Love this book. Just the facts, with a couple great tips as well. Goes over all personal hygeine....some things you may just take for granted that they know. My daughter really likes book.

I also bought the "feelings book"...we all know about girls mood swings, and that she said is her favorite since she gets to answer questions. She has also pointed out several "moods" that she has had with me and thought it was nice that it was normal.

5 out of 5 stars The Care and Keeping of You: The Body Book for Girls.......2007-10-19

I purchased 3 books for my daughter because she is developing and growing up so quickly (and she loves to read), I thought I should find some books we could read and review together and I could answer questions for her. She has not put this book down and has read it 2 times already. This book was very appropriately written with a young girl in mind (my daughter is almost 10). The other two books were far more detailed regarding sexuality and reproduction. I'll probablly save those for later.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book for youg girls!.......2007-09-30

I got the book AmericanGirl:The Care & Keeping of You for my 9 year old daughter, Jordan, and I couldn't have been happier. It covers the basics but does not get into details that are inappropriate for her age. It answered a lot of questions for her about what to expect as she gets older, and started a lot of conversations she might have been to embarassed to ask before.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for pre-teens.......2005-12-01

If you are between the ages of ten to thirteen, this book will be perfect for you! Girls nine and under will probably be a bit young to find the information in here useful and will probably be a bit grossed out. On the back cover, it reccommends girls ages eight and up read this. How many eight-year-olds do you see shaving their legs and under their arms? None, hopefully. After thirteen, girls will probably know everything this book has to offer and will find it to be pretty basic. But if you're between the ages of ten and thirteen, you should definently read this book!

5 out of 5 stars Care & Keeping of You.......2001-10-20

This book is outstanding in the presentations, photos and explanations of the topics of relevance to 9 year olds and preteens. It is well worth reading to the child and giving any additional information that may be necessary. This book has the ability to make a pre-teen feel comfortable about all of the changes about to occur in their bodies.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Be Afraid!.......2000-01-17

I really liked this book because it lets you know all about puburty and explains that there may be times where you want to run and hide in a closet but there is nothing to be afraid of.

An empirical study was undertaken to (a) examine various determinants influencing (de-)centralisation in Trans-World, the largest producer of television programs in Taiwan, and (b) make normative recommendations as to how insights from organisational dynamics models can be used in practice. The research was based on a sample of 63 standardised personal interviews with all Trans-World employees. Scales were particularly developed for the purpose of this study. In-depth interviews, participant observer and archival data were combined with the survey data to test a model predicting uncertainty and interdependence as primary drivers of decentralisation. Results showed that despite high uncertainty and interdependence, Trans-World was highly centralised. This apparent paradox was explained by the overriding influence of two other factors not usually modelled, including both the owner-manager's desire to control and national culture. Reduced organisational effectiveness due to this partial "misfit" was sustainable through the company's oligopolistic power based on personal relations. Managerial recommendations included the use of a "company profile grid" to determine the optimal degree of decentralisation.

          Book Description

Performing Ethnomusicology is the first book to deal exclusively with creating, teaching, and contextualizing academic world music performing ensembles. Considering the formidable theoretical, ethical, and practical issues that confront ethnomusicologists who direct such ensembles, the sixteen essays in this volume discuss problems of public performance and the pragmatics of pedagogy and learning processes. Their perspectives, drawing upon expertise in Caribbean steelband, Indian, Balinese, Javanese, Philippine, Mexican, Central and West African, Japanese, Chinese, Middle Eastern, and Jewish klezmer ensembles, provide a uniquely informed and many-faceted view of this complicated and rapidly changing landscape. The authors examine the creative and pedagogical negotiations involved in intergenerational and intercultural transmission and explore topics such as reflexivity, representation, hegemony, and aesthetically determined interaction. Performing Ethnomusicology affords sophisticated insights into the structuring of ethnomusicologists' careers and methodologies. This book offers an unprecedented rich history and contemporary examination of academic world music performance in the West, especially in the United States.
"Performing Ethnomusicology is an important book not only within the field of ethnomusicology itself, but for scholars in all disciplines engaged in aspects of performance--historical musicology, anthropology, folklore, and cultural studies. The individual articles offer a provocative and disparate array of threads and themes, which Solís skillfully weaves together in his introductory essay. A book of great importance and long overdue."--R. Anderson Sutton, author of Calling Back the Spirit

4 out of 5 stars An interesting but specialized read.......2006-05-18

As a music educator trying his hand at scholarship in the ethnomusicological field, I have had no small amount of personal resistance (bordering on stubborn refusal) to the idea that I may have to largely give up music making to pursue academia. I have always felt that it is elitist to talk about music more than make it. How delightful and inspiring it has been, then, to read "Performing Ethnomusicology," a volume full of perspectives on the role of the ethnomusicologist as music educator.

Despite all of the emphasis on fieldwork and writing in the discipline, it is important to remember that when we find ourselves in the employ of a University, it is quite likely that the administration will expect us to be responsible for some sort of "world music" ensemble that is either already in place or based on our backgrounds. The book contains fifteen articles by ethnomusicologists in various states of employ around the world. All of the writings are well-edited and relatively easy to read, and generally avoid getting bogged down in academic posturing. Of particular interest is the afterword by Mantle Hood. In a mere four pages, you get a sense of the incredible work that he has done to bring "world" music into academia. While any of us would struggle to represent a single style, he has brought Japanese, Balinese, Javanese, and Ghanaian into institutions across the country. This book covers leaders of ensembles in these styles and many more.

Dealing with performance of non-Western music within the confines of Western performance practice results in interesting tensions. One of the main themes in this book is the ways in which various Ethnomusicologists deal with these issues: do you break the barriers down and alienate the audience? Do you change the music to allow the audiences to more readily accept it? Do you use some combination of the two? "Performing Ethnomusicology" addresses these extremes and all points in between.

Of course, the crux of any ethnomusicological argument is the emic/etic argument. Mantle Hood's concept of "bimusicality" is the thread that holds "Performing Ethnomusicology" together. While we can never really be "of" the culture that we study, we certainly can prepare ourselves with a greater understanding of that culture's music. However, our meager "bimusical" understanding of that music becomes the paradigm for our students when we take on the responsibility of leading such a group.

To make matters more complicated, many students enroll in the ensemble for a semester at a time. Armed with the proposed theoretical and pedagogical strength of Western academia, we are expected to create "bimusical" performers in an extremely limited time period. This tension created by the institution smells of the ethnocentricism that we wish to avoid if we are to be respectful to the musics that we study. This book shows Ethnomusicologists struggling with and conquering these issues by various means.

The lowdown: As a meeting point between the two disciplines that I find myself in, I found this book to be an entertaining, fascinating, and ultimately exciting read. However, I am aware that I am the target audience. People who are not music educators or ethnomusicologists may not find these issues as engaging as I did.

                  Book Description

This volume chronicles the phenomenon of a television program that commanded first place for much of the time since its premiere in September 1984. Each week in the United States it has consistently drew a loyal audience of up to 60 million people, breaking records for ratings and shares. The show is credited with lifting a third-place network into commanding leadership, advancing the image of black families, being the object of the greatest syndication barter deal in history, and regenerating the sitcom genre. Approached from a systems-theoretical perspective, this book considers The Cosby Show historically, economically, politically, legally, and socioculturally. The book provides detailed examination of the show's production, audience profiles, and international reviews and reactions to it. Fuller includes the results of a survey conducted by her (and translated into appropriate languages) for more than 800 responses from a dozen countries. Media scholars continue to call for future research on acculturation effects of television and for research on complete, contextual studies of specific television genres. The Cosby Show: Audiences, Impact and Implications attempts to fill those gaps.

                  Book Description

This book reflects decades of important research on the mathematical foundations of speech recognition. It focuses on underlying statistical techniques such as hidden Markov models, decision trees, the expectation-maximization algorithm, information theoretic goodness criteria, maximum entropy probability estimation, parameter and data clustering, and smoothing of probability distributions. The author's goal is to present these principles clearly in the simplest setting, to show the advantages of self-organization from real data, and to enable the reader to apply the techniques.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for experts.......2007-04-22

I bought this book because I wanted a comprehensive introduction on the statistical approach to speech recognition. There is no doubt that this is an excellent book, that achieves this. If you are new to the field of speech recognition, be warned that this book isn't exactly the easiest to read, though.

For example, chapter 2 which discusses Hidden Markov Models, laying part of foundation for the following chapters, is full of mathematical formulas that won't be easy to follow unless you already have some background on the topic. I would recommend that instead you read L. Rabiner's paper "A Tutorial on Hidden Markov Models and Selected Applications in Speech Recognition". Rabiner not only shows the formulas, he describes their meaning, and the tutorial makes it easy for you to follow the text and actually understand what is going on.

That said, every chapter includes a section on additional reading (the above paper is mentioned in chapter 2) so you can always look up the references to help you understand the material, if you need to.

To summarize, this is an excellent text, that I would recommend to experts in the field, but beginners may need additional reading to get a better understanding of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough Overview of Stats and Algorithms for Speech Rec.......2001-12-13

This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the statistical models and algorithms used for speech recognition. Jelinek sets up the speech recognition problem in the traditional way as the decoding half of Shannon's noisy channel model. While Jelinek glosses over signal processing, he provides an excellent overview of the symbolic stages of processing involved in speech recognition.

After a quick introduction, Jelinek digs into the statistics behind Hidden Markov Models (HMMs), the foundation of almost all of today's speech recognizers. This is followed by chapters devoted to acoustic modeling (probability of acoustics given words) and language modeling (probability of a given sequence of words), and the algorithmic search induced by this model. There are also advanced chapters on fast match (widely used heuristics for pruning search), the Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm for training, and the use of decision trees, maximum entropy and backoff for language models. He covers several auxiliary topics including information theory and perplexity, the spelling to phoneme mapping, and the use of triphones for cross-phoneme modeling. Each chapter is a worthy introduction to an important topic.

This book does not presuppose much in the way of mathematical, computational, or linguistic background. A simple intro to probability and some experience with search problems would be of help, but isn't necessary -- you'll learn a lot about these topics reading the book.

All in all, this is the best thorough introduction to speech recognition that you can find. Read it along with Manning and Schuetze's "Foundations of Statistical Natural Language Processing" from the same series; there's a little overlap in language modeling, but not much. You might want to start with the gentler book by Jurafsky and Martin, "Speech and Language Processing", before tackling either Jelinek or Manning and Schuetze.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent synposis of statistical theory.......2001-09-12

This book provides an excellent overview of speech recognition technology using Hidden Markov Models. Although Jelinek is clearly speaking with respect to his experience at IBM - he might as well be describing any other commercial speech recognition framework in the world. As a researcher and programmer in the area of speech recognition I regard this book as an excellent reference. It is concise, and I would say that anyone with a reasonable grasp of mathematics should have no trouble understanding most of the topics. In some of the more advanced areas some readers might need to refer to one of reference papers described in the book. I agree with the first reader - destined to be a classic!

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent,Unique Book - Destined to be a Classic.......2001-05-16

This book is possibly the first of its kind - exclusively devoted to Statistical Speech Recognition. The author is a pioneer in the area - one of the 'fathers' of the field,as it were. Thus one expects the text to be authoritative, and it is. The 'information density' is very high - it's a small book, but absolutely packed with information. You'll learn a lot about Hidden Markov Models and their use in Speech Recognition, but it also addresses many other issues, like language modelling and grammar, making it much more than a mere 'speech maths' book.

However, this is definitely not meant for absolute newcomers to the field of speech processing, and it does assume some background in advaced mathematics as well, especially in probability.

If you're looking for other aspects of Speech Recognition or code, you've come to the wrong place - but please don't spoil the rating of an excellent book by complaining that it doesn't have what it never promised to :-) - if you want a solid introduction to the field as a whole, i'd suggest 'Fundamentals of Speech Recognition' by Rabiner & Juang, and if it's code that you're looking for, there's lots of excellent open source stuff available on the net, notably from CMU and Cambridge, and there are some recent books in the market exclusively devoted to implementation of speech recognition systems.

To sum up, if you have some exposure to speech recognition and want to learn the maths & concepts behind the Statistical approach to Speech Recognition, this is your book.

This is an excellent book for people with speech recognition knowledge. The algorithms are very well described in a sound and comprehensive mathematical framework.
