People love secrets. Ever since the first word was written, humans have sent coded messages to each other. In The Code Book, Simon Singh, author of the bestselling Fermat's Enigma, offers a peek into the world of cryptography and codes, from ancient texts through computer encryption. Singh's compelling history is woven through with stories of how codes and ciphers have played a vital role in warfare, politics, and royal intrigue. The major theme of The Code Book is what Singh calls "the ongoing evolutionary battle between codemakers and codebreakers," never more clear than in the chapters devoted to World War II. Cryptography came of age during that conflict, as secret communications became critical to both sides' success.

Confronted with the prospect of defeat, the Allied cryptanalysts had worked night and day to penetrate German ciphers. It would appear that fear was the main driving force, and that adversity is one of the foundations of successful codebreaking.

In the information age, the fear that drives cryptographic improvements is both capitalistic and libertarian--corporations need encryption to ensure that their secrets don't fall into the hands of competitors and regulators, and ordinary people need encryption to keep their everyday communications private in a free society. Similarly, the battles for greater decryption power come from said competitors and governments wary of insurrection.

The Code Book is an excellent primer for those wishing to understand how the human need for privacy has manifested itself through cryptography. Singh's accessible style and clear explanations of complex algorithms cut through the arcane mathematical details without oversimplifying. --Therese Littleton

Book Description

In his first book since the bestselling Fermat's Enigma, Simon Singh offers the first sweeping history of encryption, tracing its evolution and revealing the dramatic effects codes have had on wars, nations, and individual lives. From Mary, Queen of Scots, trapped by her own code, to the Navajo Code Talkers who helped the Allies win World War II, to the incredible (and incredibly simple) logisitical breakthrough that made Internet commerce secure, The Code Book tells the story of the most powerful intellectual weapon ever known: secrecy.

Throughout the text are clear technical and mathematical explanations, and portraits of the remarkable personalities who wrote and broke the world's most difficult codes. Accessible, compelling, and remarkably far-reaching, this book will forever alter your view of history and what drives it.  It will also make yo wonder how private that e-mail you just sent really is.

5 out of 5 stars The Code Book.......2007-09-25

I found it interesting and well written. Relize Simon is a Brit, so slightly a different type of sentence structure. I found sometimes that I just could not put the book down. I found out about the book from MAA. It's a college Math Mag playing with Hamming Code. Got interested in the artical about the book and then purchased it. Out of the three cyrpto books I bought this was the best. Others focused on the mathmatics and were not translated well from German.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting, informative, geniously narrative, fascinating & enlightening........2007-08-22

This great book might on one hand be seen as an introduction to
cryptography (producing codes) and cryptanalysis (breaking codes), and on
the other hand as an anthology of slightly dramatized biographies of
certain individuals, throughout the whole history of codes and ciphers,
related to corresponding major events.

The style of the book is a successful and well-structured mixture of
popular science at its best and somewhat rigorous descriptions of
concepts and algorithms of various complexity. It starts off with telling
the story of the so called 'cipher of Mary Queen of Scots', then
successively deals with, for instance, the initial invention of a
theoretically unbreakable code (through using random numbers) and its
practical drawbacks, the rise and fall of the Enigma code, the usage of
codes in the form of unusual (hopefully unknown to the enemy or opponent)
languages, the analysis of ancient forgotten languages, privacy issues
including safe transfering of code keys and, finally, ends with
discussions of modern, and possibly future, cryptography/cryptanalysis-
techniques based on quantum computers and theory.

Moreover, additional interesting, and in some instances somewhat more
technical, material is referred to several appendices.

Note: The swedish translated edition includes quite a lot of Sweden-specific
information. (Translator: Margareta Brogren.) In all respects this is a
most impressive piece of work!

Great Book! A fun read and very interesting. A history of code making and code breaking from the beginning until now.

4 out of 5 stars A History of Ciphers, With Proper Credit for the Cracking of ENIGMA.......2007-08-07

Singh has provided the reader a delightful history of encryption, beginning with 16th-century codes, proceeding with the mechanized ones, and concluding with modern computer-based systems. He points out how modern encryption is being used to thwart the counterfeiting of dollars, and rejects the so-called Bible Code.

Singh also touches on the intricacies of language, and discusses the difficulty of deciphering the Egyptian hieroglyphics. This involved the decoding of a language that no one speaks today, and one which has no close relatives among modern languages. He also has a fascinating account of the Navajo Indians and their unique language, and how their conversations were used to keep the Japanese in the dark during WWII.

When in comes to the German ENIGMA code of WWII, and in contrast to some English-language books on this subject, Singh gives credit squarely where it is due. He traces the Polish successes with code-breaking, beginning with the cracking of Russian codes by the Biuro Szyfrow (the Bureau of Ciphers) during the 1920 Polish-Bolshevik War (p. 144). In the years before WWII, a Polish team of mathematicians headed by Marian Rejewski recognizably solved the ENIGMA (p. 155). The Poles were ten years ahead of anyone else in this field (p. 160). The later successes of the British at Bletchley relied on Rejewski's work (p. 170), and followed the lead of the Poles (p. 243). Alan Turing followed Rejewski's strategy (p. 171).

          Book Description

This ground-breaking book introduces macro accounting. Most modern money emerges out of accounting documentation of private executory debt contracts within exchange processes. Money-information markers are basically negotiable (exchangeable for value) debt instruments. Macro accounting techniques provide sufficient detail to examine the complex coupling relations and the resulting constraints among exchanges of good, services, and money-information markers of various sorts. The book begins with a discussion of the fundamental concepts of trades, exchanges, and the accounting basis of money. Accounting is then described as an aspect of empirical science--a means of observing concrete processes. Drawing on these basic ideas, Swanson extends organizational accounting to societies and supranational systems. The last four chapters simulate economic processes. The book should be read by serious students of economics, accounting, and political science as well as societal policy markers and the international banking community.

3 out of 5 stars Cute, but might need to be tossed out with the bath water..........2004-04-06

Okay, I bought this book, thinking it might make an interesting writing resource. Plus, I enjoy reading good pickup lines...They are usually good for a laugh if anything. But this book was not quite as funny as the author and title suggests. Also the book is printed with 3-4 LARGE pickup lines per page. (To make it worth the price, they should have at least included much more...Ahem...Material). While its no doubt cute to read over once, it lacks any practical application and has zero re-read potential. I recommend it for only the truly desperate.

1 out of 5 stars Not as funny as the title would suggest.......2000-08-13

I saw the title on-line and thought the concept hilarious. However, when the book arrived I thought - YAWN - these get boring real fast and most of the others aren't as catchy as the book's title.

Some may love this and some may not. I'd suggest you flip through it at a bookstore before wagering $10 + shipping. I was going to give it to a friend for a 50th birthday gag gift but I was afraid people would flip it open and expect more sidesplitting remarks and be disappointed.

            To each their own...

            Cheers all!

            5 out of 5 stars Great!.......1999-11-06

A wonderful ice breaker for parties and group activities. Have males pick a female and lay one on them, and then the woman picks one and lays one on another guy, and on and on. It's a lot of fun!

            4 out of 5 stars HYSTERICAL.......1999-06-06

I was shopping in Barnes and Nobles when I came across this book. I started thumbing through the book and began shrieking after awhile trying to hold back laughter. After five minutes or so of browsing, I knew I would be buying this book. I found "You're So Fine, I'd Drink A Tub of Your Bathwater" to be hiliarious as it gives the 500 pickup lines that men use to talk to women. Many of the lines were common and not funny, but some lines were SOOO CRAZY and WILD that I just cracked up from laughing so hard. The best thing about this book, I guess, is it will provide a woman with a lot of laughs or some comeback lines. Men should buy the book just so they'll know what NOT to say.

            5 out of 5 stars Real Good.......1999-03-17

After reading this book... I was unstopable, and so was the amount of ladies I picked up from them... this book isn't only great for picking up chicks... it's great for better things as well!

Perform timeless Violin works with Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra! Perfect for practice, rehearsal, auditions, contest solos, performances, and more! This work has been a classic from the moment Jascha Heifitz premiered it in 1947, and is as revered today as virtually any other concerted work for the violin. Korngold was such a child prodigy that he was hailed as the "Mozart of the 20th Century." And while he was known for many years primarily for his great film compositions, his operas and concert works are also recognized, especially in recent years, for their genius. This concerto uses themes from four of Korngold's great films and it is German Late Romanticism at its most splendid. For advanced players or those who love a challenge! This 2CD set includes a special slow-tempo practice version of the accompaniments for your use as you learn the concerto.

Includes a newly-engraved edition of the concerto on high-quality ivory paper, edited and with performance notes by Ms. Kouzmanova; and a digital stereo compact disc featuring a complete performance of the concerto with orchestra and soloist, followed by a second performance minus you, the soloist; plus a second compact disc containing a full-speed version of the complete concerto followed by a special -20% slow-tempo version of the accompaniment for practice purposes. The recording is thoroughly indexed for your practice and performance convenience.

The 20th century has seen the triumphal progression of an avant-garde aesthetic in virtually every field of art: theater, painting, and even music. But what of those artists who don't toe the fashionable line? Erich Wolfgang Korngold, like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, was a child prodigy. Also like Mozart, he had a domineering father. Julius Korngold was a musical archconservative and he carefully guided the genius of his second son into respectable forms of musical expression, even while others began experimenting with serialism and jazz.

When their native Austria was incorporated into the Third Reich, the Korngolds wisely took up residence in America, where Erich earned a comfortable living scoring music for Hollywood blockbusters. Korngold was a perfectionist with an almost operatic approach to his film work, but his tonal proclivities and work in popular music ruined his status as a serious musician--at least in the eyes of the musical establishment. The last few years have seen a rise in Korngold's popularity among America's musical movers and shakers, and a new appreciation for his work, cinematic and otherwise, has developed. Jessica Duchen's well-considered discussion of the life and work of this intriguing man should continue the much-needed rehabilitation of the long-embattled tonal composers of this century.

5 out of 5 stars A superb, readable introduction to a wonderful composer.......1999-12-04

Erich Wolfgang Korngold is a composer who for far too long was known only to film buffs and a few aficionados here and there. His centenary in 1996 brought with it a tremendous rush of reappraisal, recordings and performances, all of which have helped to re-establish Korngold as a force to be reckoned with. I certainly found this book inspired me to explore works that I did not already know and much enriched my view of those I did know, especially the intensely powerful opera 'Die tote Stadt'. My opinion is that this writer has a tremendous empathy for Korngold, his music and the eras through which he lived - fin-de-siecle Vienna, 1940s Hollywood and the devastated, artistically rigid post-war Europe of the 1950s. Furthermore, she is able to bring him to life with a delightfully light touch, looking at not only his complicated and crucially influential relationship with his father but also his famously sharp wit and his love of good food - especially chocolate! While the book is evidently shorter and less detailed than Brendan Carroll's tour de force 'The Last Prodigy', it provides a superb introduction to this endearing composer and his warm, open-hearted music. What's more, it kept me reading, from cover to cover - on the beach!

1 out of 5 stars Enthusiastically eulogistic but shallow.......1999-02-12

The author is clearly a fan of Korngold but this book does little justice to its subject. The problem is that the book is a simple linear account of the composer's life. Korngold did indeed have a truely remarkable life, a genuine child prodigy, forced out of Austria by the Nazis threat, settling in Hollywood and winning Oscars are but a few highlights. However, even the sense of wonderment that his youthful achievements must have engenedered are not communicated.

A good acid test for any biography of an artist is that it should encourage the reader to further investigate the artist's work further. The author's lack of empathy for the composer's music and the remarkable time through which he lived is such that the book fails to enthuse. A great disapointment.

4 out of 5 stars A good well written stopgap.......1998-05-27

Jessica's bio of EWK (as we affectionately abbreviate him) was for me a wonderful glint into a life which was heretofore hidden. Those in the know were anticipating Brendan Carroll's "definitive" biography. Jessica's book gave us an overdue insight into the life of this genius in the absence of anything else. Now, it seems that we have an embarassement of riches, with Carroll's exhaustive bio and the ongoing recording revival. All of this should not obscure Duchen's acheivement in bringing to life a man who was for most an elusive character. Duchen's prose is mellifluous, and has a touch of humour(see when she writes of Korngold's love of sweets). The timing of this book's appearance may have been a bit off, but it will still hold its place. There is some inevitable repetition between the Duchen and Carroll books, no doubt having consulted the same sources. Yet each book has an individual character. There can never be too much written about one of the most misunderstood composers of our world. Duchen deserves kudos for bringing out the first ever English language book on Korngold. Her acheivement serves as an economical and invaluable alternative to Carroll's lengthier, more in-depth, and required opus.

                                Book Description

2005 is the year of the consort. The book focuses on the best known celebrity consorts - from Camilla to Guy Ritchie, David Furnish, Chris Martin, Trudie Styler, Heather Mills McCartney and Coleen McLoughlin. On the surface, there is an unbridgeable gulf between most of these personalities. Yet, there is something that is common to all of them - apart, that is, from the public fascination with their lives. Each chapter offers a potted history of a particular relationship and examines what has made it work. Surprisingly, a common thread does emerge. As our consorts and their partners revolve in a glare of flashing bulbs and intrusive attention, the dynamic of their relationships changes. The more resilient partner has a subtle, yet profound influence on the other. What makes a perfect celebrity consort? Publicist Xavier Adam offers advice on how to negotiate the pitfalls of being the less famous half of a couple.

                                  Book Description

Drawing on a long career as an investigative journalist, Joe Spear tells the chilling story of how the Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Reagan administrations have controlled and manipulated the press.

Much of his book documents the Nixon strategy, which relied on a constant flow of positive news, the sophisticated use of television to evade the press and address viewers directly, and intimidation through classified or censored information. What is particularly startling is Spear's revelation about the extent to which the so-called experts (media specialists, pollsters, and the like) and technology now shape our view of the President.

As editor and chief of staff for syndicated columnist Jack Anderson, Joe Spear is primarily responsible for covering diplomatic and foreign affairs and has broken some of the major news stories of our day.

5 out of 5 stars Straight forward and easy to read.......2006-03-13

This is a good read for anyone thinking about employing metrics for software projects. I have read several books and articles on metrics, software and program managment, in the last 6 months and this one of the few which was worth reading. Text is easy to read and the message and methods are presented in a straight forward manner. No, you will not find any amazing breakthoughs in software project managment in this book. What you will find is a good foundation for adding metrics which add value to software program management.

5 out of 5 stars The Standard for Software Measurement Programs.......2002-05-27

I would rate this book ****** if it were possible. If you are looking for material on how to start a "software metrics program", look no further. This is the ultimate reference on software measurement initiatives. The PSM method is compatible with the CMMI (Measurement & Analysis Process Area) and the foundation for the ISO/IEC 15939 standard. All of the authors are recognized authorities in software measurement and process improvement. Dr. Barry Boehm (COCOMO author) has written the foreword. The PSM process is sponsored by the DoD and the U.S. Army. The book itself is comprehensive, well-written, and easy to read. It provides ready-to-use templates such as "Measurement Construct Template", "Project Measurement Plan Outline", and "Data Verification Checklist". Chapter outline:

1 - Measurement: Key Concepts and Practices
                                      2 - Measurement Information Model
                                      3 - Plan Measurement
                                      4 - Perform Measurement
                                      5 - Analysis Techniques
                                      6 - Evaluate Measurement
7 - Establish and Sustain Commitment
                                      8 - Measure for Success
Appendix A - Measurement Construct Examples
Appendix B - Information System Case Study
Appendix C - Synergy Integrated Copier Case Study

Note: Appendix A provides 14 detailed, complete examples of measurement constructs ("metrics"). Appendixes B and C provide 2 comprehensive case studies (approximately 60 pages).

It would require at least a 2-day workshop to address all the information provided by this book (probably at 10 times its price). You can't afford to miss it if you are more than casually interested in software measurement. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

There is a wealth of material available from the PSM site, including the PSM Insight application and PSM Guidebook. However this book is not redundant because it is structured as a clearly written introduction to practical software measurement, that includes excellent guidance for implementing it into your organization. In addition, the 304 pages that comprise this book manages to convey the information contained in the existing PSM documentation, and does so much more succinctly.

I found the most valuable parts of this book to be the clearly described measurement model, and the way the authors distinguish between data that is useful to projects and organizational data collection and analysis. This material places PSM in context and is a sound starting point for an organizational SQA initiative.

The case studies reinforces the mechanics of PSM, and also contain advice and pointers for implementing enterprise-wide measurement. Although I've been following the PSM initiative almost since its inception and have read all of the copious materials available, I still gained much from this book. If you're establishing an SQA function or striving for CMM level 4 or above you'll find this book invaluable. The URLs provided will lead to even more material, including a free Windows-based software tool that fully supports the practical software measurement process.
