5 out of 5 stars the complete guide to home carpentry.......2007-03-08

received book in a timely manner and in excellent condition

5 out of 5 stars Very clear and well explained book........2006-05-04

I bought this book for a garage project of mine and the decent reviews it had. I must say the reviews are well deserved. This book offers plenty of photos and well explained "how-to" guide lines. Detailed explanation with photos of all the tools you'll need for your project. I can now do my projects with confidence considering I am a novice at carpentry. Excellent choice for the novist.

1 out of 5 stars So far from complete its an insult to carpenters.......2006-04-16

Had to give 1 star to off set the other reviews. My problem with most of these carpentry books is their lack of conviction to a topic. I have been a carpenter for way longer than 4 years (the accepted journeyman level). In truth it takes a lifetime to keep up with new practices and master traditional techniques. If you need to read 93 PAGES OF 277 on what a particular tool is or how to set up a saw then you really are not ready for complete carpentry. You need to develop your understanding of the tools.

Taunton Press is my recommendation for high quality information. Most of their publications assume you know how to use your tools. I would like to see quality books on specific skills. The complete all in one would have to be text book size and come in volumes. One good example is Lewis Vogt Carpentry 3rd edition. Used in construction management courses.

This book is just fluff. A weekend warrior might find some good info to improve his garage or better use his tools.

2 out of 5 stars Not a great book........2006-01-16

This book doesn't include any text about stairs. I guess most complete homes don't need stairs. I find this book more of a coffee table book than a book I can count on for howto information.

4 out of 5 stars Good Basic Book!.......2005-12-27

I got this book from my wife for Christmas, and I was immediately able to use it! I'm a computer geek, and usually when I get a hammer in my hand, it ends up either hitting my fingers or making a bigger hole in the wall.

This book teaches ALL the basics, from how to saw wood to how to frame and install a new door in a new wall! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that it's still a reference book - it's not something that I'd pore over in the middle of the night and couldn't put down.

It's still a great book!

5 out of 5 stars Great, honest, funny and brave memoir.......2003-02-08

This book is not at all what I expected when I first got it. I thought it would be the story of the daughter of a famous father, a rather superficial autobiography. It's actually the story of Rosemary Breslin's serious blood disorder. She tells her story in a funny, brave way, but she deals with a serious, rare and chronic blood disorder that affects every aspect of her life. This story of major illness and how it affects the life of even those with great privilege is a fabulous read. Often funny and mostly unsentimental, we read of how love can continue despite the life changing illness she deals with. I really love this book and I hope more people get the chance to read it. It really puts our own petty problems in perspective. It's a fast and easy read and it ends far too early for my taste. I'd like to know how Rosemary is doing now, if her health has improved, what her latest writing project is.

This is a funny book that shows how life can throw unexpected curves and how a sense of humor can save you. Stricken with incurable anemia, Rosemary Breslin was losing the energy to live--a perfect time to meet the man of your dreams and fall in love. As the daughter of the columnist Jimmy Breslin, it's no surprise that the author can serve up funny and thoughtful stories. Her relationship with her family and her charismatic character bring the book to life. Full of gabby self-reflection, shopping sprees, and celebrity cameos (she gets medical referrals from the Cuomos, gifts from Giorgio Armani, and a walk-on from Jack Nicholson) Not Exactly What I Had in Mind is a most welcome memoir of a well-lived life.

                    5 out of 5 stars Got it........2004-12-21

Having spent a good deal of time in hospitals, I recognized the humor in this remarkable book. Irreverent humor is the native tongue of the hospital patient; the more dire the prognosis, the edgier the humor. Thank you Rosemary for so much healing laughter.

3 out of 5 stars I Agree with the Reviewer Directly Below..........2004-08-11

I'd been trying to put a finger on what disappointed me about this book and the reviewer below hit on it - that Ms. Breslin comes across as spoiled and - dare I say it - somewhat shallow in her evaluation of her illness and its impact. I too am a sufferer of an autoimmune disease, though nowhere near the level of the author's, and expected to bond with her story. I'm very sorry about Ms. Breslin's recent death. It would have been interesting to read about how she grew and changed over the seven years between the book's publication and her death. I hope she found peace and meaning in the interim.

2 out of 5 stars Not exactly as good as I'd hoped . . ........2004-07-14

There's a compelling story here to be sure - a promising young writer falls in love while afflicted with a debilitating and mysterious disease - but the writing is cliched and superficial, and the author just doesn't do the story justice.

The book can be entertaining as she's sometimes funny, but as I read I was increasingly bored and irritated by the author's shallowness and lack of insight. She describes her journey adequately, and if you're looking for a "patient's story" I suppose this one's OK; but the downside to me is that the story's all about her. There's little evidnece she cares about anyone's feelings but her own.

For instance, her husband is a recovering alcoholic/addict, yet she seems utterly unconcerned about the challenges he might have encountered and never mentions how her illness might impact his. She spills many words, on the other hand, over her concern that the diamond on her engagement ring will be big enough to please her.

To me, the author came across as a spoiled brat who's traded on her name and connections to be published. She happened to come down with a disease that gave her something to write about. If she is a wiser, more compassionate, more tender soul than is in evidence here I hope she's able to give it voice in her next book.

                    5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2004-07-12

Rosemary - we love you! You are an inspiration. Could hardly believe the news.

5 out of 5 stars One seat of honor books in my personal library!.......2004-12-19

Gillespie was professor of Music at the Indiana University. He endeavored to satisfy a wide range of interests. From the clavier literature student to the musical gourmet , he presents the different phases of keyboard development . Beware about the organ music . He prevents the organ music has its own niche and requires a separate volume .
Individual chapters and articles will be helpful in quickly locating information about particular composers , even the most unknown and sometimes neglected composers of the different countries and periods . Footnotes and bibliographies will be important for the professional , student , performer or simply casual investigator .
As result of the final reading you will obtain a precise scope about the development of the works for the solo keyboard , traditions , interconnections from the first works of the sixteenth century to the new composers of today.
A real must for the music lovers and every person sincerely interested in the evolution of the instrument.

                            5 out of 5 stars A must-have resource for pianists.......1997-01-12

John Gillespie has written an invaluable resource for anyone interested in solo keyboard music. There are brief biographies of the most important composers, and the author's recommendations of each composer's best solo keyboard works. Gillespie also mentions minor composers, and summarizes the "mood" of each musical period. I don't always agree with his critiques, but that just makes it more interesting. If you are a pianist, teacher, or student, you should own this book

                                            Book Description

What is addiction? What images trigger it? What beliefs support it? How does addiction manipulate reality? Limit perception? Is addiction the motivation behind crude materialism? Is our culture so mesmerized by fantasy that it lacks the ability to understand the consequences of certain realities? Addicts are last to see their self-demise, can a whole culture be so blind? Perhaps. It has become apparent that no longer is addiction someone else's problem, lingering behind doorways or down dark alleys. No longer are the dealers of the world only doing business on street corners or in abandoned warehouses. They are in high-rises and malls, on billboards and commercials, in schools, on the radio, in print, and always with the best deal taking residence in our psyche.

*********** Great! An insightful, integrated, and enticing explanation of the process of addiction and how it creates devastation not only at an individual level, but at the level of society. Though disturbing, the concept of Cultural Addiction is quite compelling as it proves that there is a basic, understood process behind consumerism. As it asks tough questions, with clear data, it challenges all of us to look at our patterns in not only how they affect our lives, but also ultimately how they affect others and future life. --Thom Hartmann, Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight

Black humor alternates with almost unbearable pathos in National Public Radio journalist Jacki Lyden's memoir of her mother's manic-depressive episodes. Dreadful though those periodic bouts of madness were, they also gave an unhappy housewife a sense of power and freedom that Lyden couldn't help but admire. "You could say that the life of my imagination began with my mother's visions," she writes, making connections between her profession of "find[ing] things out in places of great secrets" and her struggle to deal with her mother's illness.

As an adult, National Public Radio foreign correspondent Jacki Lyden has spent her life on the front lines of some of the #151; she's tired of hearing her relatives talk about the past. But when she opens the front door to symbolically welcome the prophet Elijah, she's transported to a Polish village in the year 1942, where she becomes caught up in the tragedy of the time. Heartbreaking, hilarious, lyrical, this memoir is a mother-daughter story of the most unique and dramatic kind, a testimony to obstinate devotion in the face of bewildering illness. Lyden recalls her calamitous childhood with a child's aching regret and an adult's keen wisdom. An abusive, rich doctor became her step-father for a time and she describes tragic physical and mental abuse. Lyden, an extremely descriptive and imaginative writer, is a foreign correspondent for National Public Radio and has spent much of her adult life on the frontlines of dangerous war zones in the world. Her childhood was a war zone of a different kind. Her mother suffered from mental illness and in the days when medical help for this was surreptitious, she was often labeled crazy. "By the time I was fourteen," Lyden writes, "religious epiphanies were occurring in our house fairly often, and not only to my mother. I loved Communion because I liked the idea of taking a bite out of Christ Jesus. ...I was armed by this tribal ritual, the fallen comrade who has died and given me his vital flesh to live. ... In church, we could all go a little crazy. ...My teen group was taken into Milwaukee to hear an evangelistic speaker, a Mr. David Wilkerson, who blessed us by touching our forehead if we came up on stage, as I did. He talked about all the juvenile delinquents in New York City and how he personally was saving them... You could read about his exploits in his book, The Cross and the Switchblade, available in the lobby." Lyden documents her travels, letters home, and the devotion to her mother.

I bought this book after watching Ms. Lyden's appearance on Larry King Live, in which she spoke engagingly and eloquently about her childhood, her mother's illness, and the effects it had on the family. Sadly, she speaks more effectively than she writes.

Big words taste and feel good in our mouths, and it's fun to string a bunch together (this I know from personal experience), but after reading that style through a couple of chapters it got tiresome. Ms. Lyden seemed more interested in demonstrating her command of the English language than in telling her story.

I was also disappointed by too-frequent and too-lengthy sidetracks into other aspects of the family's life (for instance, the whole trip to Mexico story could have been told in a couple of pages). I had the impression Ms. Lyden was trying to flesh out the book.

For those interested in the subject matter, this is worth a try if you can find it second-hand or in the library, but not worth full price.

I do recommend watching Ms. Lyden if you ever get a chance to see her being interviewed - she is an excellent communicator...just not on paper.

5 out of 5 stars Another Beautiful Mind.......2003-11-15

I am saddened to find so many unfavorable reviews of this memoir. Reading it, I was reminded of "Angela's Ashes," "A Beautiful Mind" and "Growing Up." I found Lyden's prose both poetic and evocative. I thought she portrayed her own family and herself with remarkable journalistic perspective, but also with compassion. I am amazed at the extent of Lyden's success in her attempt to describe her mother's mania, as well as the author's candor about her own life. There's no self-indulgence in these pages, only a long and difficult distance bravely traveled and recounted for us, so we can see the terrain through her eyes. To the critical reviewers, I say, "Let us read your life," and to Ms. Lyden an unequivocal, "Bravo."

But the bond moments were hard to identify! I also used the maps a lot to see places that items to pick up resided. overal, a simple but good guide.
