title change: The 2005 Doctor's Pocket Calorie, Fat & Carb Counter with 200 Fast-food restaurants
Customer Reviews:
A book you can count on........2007-10-21
Absolutely the best all around calorie counter. Why? Because the book is small (fits in a purse easily), easy use, well laid out, and extremely complete- even has calorie counts for many major restaurants! A book you just can't beat for the price, I highly recommend it for anyone counting calories, fats or carbs.
Also recommend The Sixty-Second Motivator for readers who have had difficulty sticking with a diet plan.
The Calorie King is indeed the KING.......2007-10-16
I was looking for a really good calorie counter for my purse that included restaurants. I ordered this one thinking it would do, but I didn't expect it to be that great. I was wrong, it was excellent. It has a wealth of information in it about diets and dietary related information everyone needs to know in a manner even the simple folk...like me.. can understand. The calorie, fat and carbohydrate counter was far better than any I've ever come acrossed in my life and that says a lot since I have always been a calorie and fat counter and have owned many, many counters over the years. The restaurant guide was also top of the line and included restaurants I have not seen in counters before...and not just the typical fast food restaurants...other restaurants as well. I will buy any updated versions of The Calorie King , I'm done with all the others. Oh and I almost forgot... they have an awesome online site, how cool is that?
carb orator.......2007-10-14
excellent source of information. If it isn't in this book, you probably shouldn't be eating it.
Interesting and highly-recommended.......2007-10-10
I recently bought the 2007 Calorie, Fat, and Carbohydrate counter book because it was suggested by a weightloss advisor that I buy a calorie-counting book.
I've lost 16 pounds in a little over three months with the help of a weightloss plan and now that I'm on the plan's stabilization level, I can start to incorporate "normal" foods (pizza!) back into my diet on a reasonable level. And I can monitor things by counting calories.
What attracted me to this book was, at first, its size. I can fit it in my purse or my pocket and won't take up much room in any other kind of bag. Then when I opened the book and starting looking, I saw it's everything I need.
I really like the updated fast food/franchise restaurant calorie listings. Now, while EVERYTHING isn't included, there's A LOT of information on popular places. If I know I'm going out later, I can plan the rest of my day by looking at the calorie book. If I want that burger and fries at Chili's later, I need to watch what I eat prior to that outing and also watch what I eat the next day, so I don't pack on the pounds again. It can happen QUICK if you're not careful!
So, between what I learned at the weightloss center and what I'm learning from this book, I feel confident I can maintain my weight, stay healthy and fit and feel and look good....all which I have worked hard to do. I could go on, but the point is that this book is very useful EVERYDAY and is interesting and fun too.
This would also make a great gift for ANYONE!
great deal.......2007-09-30
This is a fabulous little book to keep in your purse or day planner..
I couldn't live without it, have the earlier version and now he's added so many new foods. Very much worth the $$.

Book Description
Everywhere one travels in the world, people are excited about the new high technology production system. But the global villagers are also perplexed about the new social service needs that seem to accompany the high-tech economy; child care needs for working couples, elder care facilities for infirm senior citizens, burgeoning health care costs accompanying high-tech medicine, nusery school and college tuition costs, and more. There has been a global response to these social service needs, and this book will present and analyze that response. For, a new phenomenon may be emerging and as contradictory as it may appear, a kind of 'caring capitalism' may arise, worldwide. This book explores the various attempts around the globe to create a system of "caring capitalism"—and why modern nations have been pressured by "the new middle class" to do so.

Book Description
The Open Economy Macromodel: Past, Present And Future has two main objectives. The first is to assess the state of play of the Open Economy Macromodel by bringing together those who developed it with those who apply it today. The second is to assess possible directions for its future development.
The volume is divided into three parts. Part one focuses on the models, men, and institutions involved in the development of the international macroeconomic model. In this section, the contributors examine the two monetary approaches to the balance of payments, as well as the relationship between long-term fluctuations in real exchange rates and inflation. Part two deals with the present state of the models by looking at Robert Mundell's theory of optimum currency areas (OCAs) and its relationship with key currencies. The chapters in this section also consider the impact of exchange rate variability on labor markets, as well as the interactions between theoretical developments and real-world behavior in the open economy macromodel. The third and last part of this volume provides a perspective on the future by looking at alternate models and institutional perspectives. Several contributors examine the relationship between asset prices, the real exchange rate, and unemployment in a small economy via what they call "a medium-run structuralist perspective". The future of institutional structures necessary to conduct international economic policy is the subject of the last chapters in part three of the volume.

Customer Reviews:
Unordinary Lessons.......2006-03-06
We all go through life with many experiences. We can get frustrated with them or we can reflect on them and ask. "How might this make me a better person?" Paul does this in so many ways. He uncovers the "Unordinary lessons" that many of us miss.
All Emotions are Felt through these Real Life Experiences.......2005-12-21
What an array of emotions I felt when reading the different life stories of Paul Heagen. And the way he intertwined these life experiences into business situations was very thought provoking. The story of his Uncle Ray was one of the most eye opening and sad stories I've read, but truly makes one think of how they deal with all people on a day to day basis.
Short stories with a big impact.
Story telling at its finest.......2005-12-04
Too bad there aren't more stars so I could rate this book higher. As the author weaves his tales of life he pokes at your funny bone then finds a way to tug at your heart. Each story is cleverly written with a wit so sharp it's surprising the letters don't slice the pages. At the end of each chapter he shares insights and learnings that are golden. Don't miss this one.
Never has life been described so well.......2005-12-01
The humor of life and especially life on the road makes this book a great read. Short chapters that are summarized with meaningful insights give the reader a chance to reflect on what could have been a chapter that simply is entertaining. Instead, the great stories provide an opportunty to put life into a greater context.

Book Description
A best-selling author goes behind the scenes at a cutting-edge technology company poised to change the way computers see.
Thanks to the digital technology revolution, cameras are everywherePDAs, phones, anywhere you can put an imaging chip and a lens. Battling to usurp this two-billion-dollar market is a Silicon Valley company, Foveon, whose technology not only produces a superior image but also may become the eye in artificially intelligent machines. Behind Foveon are two legendary figures who made the personal computer possible: Carver Mead of Caltech, one of the founding fathers of information technology, and Federico Faggin, inventor of the CPUthe chip that runs every computer.
George Gilder has covered the wizards of high tech for twenty-five years and has an insider's knowledge of Silicon Valley and the unpredictable mix of genius, drive, and luck that can turn a startup into a Fortune 500 company. The Silicon Eye is a rollicking narrative of some of the smartestand most colorfulpeople on earth and their race to transform an entire industry. 12 illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
very boring book.......2007-05-07
I was very disappointed in this book. Gilder writes in a very obtuse way and it is hard to connect the dots with him. Save you money.
Questionable accuracy.......2007-04-26
My company was working with Foveon chips, so I was interested to read this book. The book itself was fine, but my distributer said it was so inaccurate that Foveon won't even comment anymore. Foveon chips take great pictures, by the way.
The Digital Camera is creating a breakthrough digital revolution.......2005-10-11
The Digital Camera is creating a digital revolution. Craver Mead is leading the digital revolution. The Japanese pushed CCD technology creating a $20 billion industry for digital cameras and cam recorders. CCD dicards 2/3 of its light values and uses forward propagating Neutral Networks of surrounding pixels to calculate pixel color. The Foveon chip can collect 100% of the color information per pixel using a single-chip solution and the impact will be smaller imaging, cheaper cost, higher quality, and less power power consumption. As computer computation levels increase, it seems very probable that the Foveon chip will be capable of transferring electrical signals with high connectivity and integrated connectors directly into the retina for transmission to the brain, a computer chip capable of restoring sight. Mead discovered that retina power voltage did not increase but that connectivity increased. Misha brought to light the biological mechanics of how the retina worked. Mead used Misha's work to build a silicon prototype of the retina. The threshold value is 120 million silicon rods matching the biological equivalent in the retina. In the future, the Fovean chip processor will follow in the success path of the digital signal processing hearing device.
Hopfield network. Misha research helped explain how the retina process images and color by measuring delta changes caused from movement. Feedback was critical and the Hopfield network provided the answers Misha need to explain image processing. Misha help bridge the chasm between the biology of the eye and the electrical engineer skill that Mead could provide. Eventually, Mead, Feinstein, and Misha created a digital camera based on retina modeling. The Hopfield network seemed to adequately explain how the brain intreprets visual input by measuring delta changes through feedback loops.
Federico Fagin brought the right products, too market, at the right time. Fagin built the first microprocessor, the Intel 4004 microprocessor, it contained 2300 transistors on a 7 mm by 7 mm silicon chip and can process 4 bits at a cycle rate of 60,000 per second. The silicon solution removed the need for metal connectors and introduced lithographic technics for etching transistors on silicon wafers. Fagin understanding of silicon fabrication and his innovations became critical for Mead.
Transister. Variable length transistors simulated weighting of the Nodes on the Neural Network. The Neural networks and silicon transisters helped the Synaptics team build a MICR recognition system. The team used EEPROM, programable weights, and two chip character recognition system. The machine could see and recognize between than the robotic vision systems doing input and output comparisons. Meads team opened the potential for machines to interpret input information, at a new level of sophistication.
Touch pad. The Synaptics team also went on to build a touch pad system for laptop computers taking 100% of the business away from Logitech.
Patents. Lyods story of his four camera demonstrated innovative thought and intellectual protection tactics.
Gilder successfully chronicles an important technology advance.......2005-08-02
In "The Silicon Eye" George Gilder relates another colorful story of a significant technology breakthrough, namely, a camera imaging chip that is greatly superior to everything else out there. Standard imagers work by separating the three primary colors, throwing away 2/3 of the color information at each point in the visual field, and must use software processing to interpolate the missing data. The Foveon chip is a major advancement because it can collect 100% of the color information at each point using a single-chip solution that will provide smaller and cheaper imaging that is of both higher quality and lower power consumption. The photo samples on Foveon's web site are truly astounding.
But Gilder's book over-hypes the significance of the technology. It will not "Make All Current Computers, Cameras, and Cell Phones Obsolete." Cameras, yes. And cell phones and computers will benefit greatly from the smaller, lighter, cheaper, lower power consumption, and higher image quality aspects of the Foveon chip. But the Foveon chip is not a "Silicon Eye" as Gilder suggests. The chip does not "see" the way a biological eye does - it merely records images as all cameras do. The story of Foveon's initial forays into AI and producing silicon chips that mimic brain functions is fascinating, but as Gilder describes, Foveon finally had to abandon such speculative research in favor of a viable commercial product.
