Hugely disappointed! It's a pamphlet!.......2007-10-12
Holy cow, it can't be stressed enough that this 'book' costs over a dollar a page! If you already know your open string chords and major/minor chords, major and minor scales, you know everything you could find in this pamphlet.
I wish I'd just set the money on fire, at least I'd have gotten something out of it.

This booklet (only 8 pages long) is ok for giving you some starting chords to play simple tunes with. In fact, there are only 3 pages of chords and 5 pages of information about guitar tuning, guitar fret notes, common chord combo's, and basic guitar positioning.
You can easily get this info on the internet. I'd suggest getting a more comprehensive book on chords or a guitar method book.

Recently got First Stage Guitar Chord Chart by Chris Lopez and Essentials by Bruce Arnold. I'm a weekend geetar picker just getting started. I'm mostly interested in learning chords and scales. I thought both books were good they both gave simple presentations of the most important chords and scales. Essentials has an interesting quark in that you can download videos and mp3 files that go with various parts of the book. I found the mp3 files to be very useful to jam over but I'm over here on a dial up connection so couldn't use the video stuff that much. One thing I did watch though was movies about common problems found with each chord. It showed me all the common problems people have when learning chords and I thought that was pretty cool. Ya really can't go wrong with either book though - they lay everything out very clearly and are enjoyable to work with.

Better textbooks exist..........2004-03-23
While experimenting with different textbooks for my Microeconomics classes, I decided to try the O'Sullivan and Sheffrin text. That experiment lasted two semesters.
Portions of the textbook are written at levels which are too low for college/university students, while other portions expect students to go beyond the scope of the material covered in the text. For example, in the chapter on demand and supply, surpluses and shortages are never referred to as such. Instead, they are only referred to as 'excess supply' and 'excess demand'. Too simplistic of a definition is also used for opportunity cost.
At the same time, additional problems inserted near the end of each chapter (not the chapter problems themselves), require students to apply the theory in a way that isn't taught in the textbook. Any student who has been required to complete these questions, on the basis of the textbook alone, may have experienced a lot of frustration from attempting these problems.
In addition, the textbook presents a detailed theory of taxicab licensing, yet doesn't completely explain all of the needed theory (short-run and long-run) for the market structures (pure competition, monopoly, etc.) The explanation of taxicab licensing is poor, for this level of student.
For any professor considering adopting this textbook, the testbank offers some very good questions. However, apparently some of the questions have been changed, perhaps from an earlier edition, but the answers haven't been. Overall, there were more errors in this testbank than in others I've used.
To anyone required to purchase this textbook for a course, I would recommend purchasing or borrowing other textbooks to supplement this text. If someone wants to learn Microeconomic theory on their own, there are better books available.

Manageable and informative!.......2001-12-14
The second edition of Economics: Principles and Tools by O'Sullivan/Sheffrin provides a good introduction to both macro and microeconomics. This was especially true for me since my math skills aren't up to par. It was manageable and understandable for those who don't do well with numbers. The CD was helpful in understanding the graphs that were involved in textbook. In addition to providing an introduction to economics, it does a good job of helping you understand how you can use economics in your everyday life. Especially in chapter two where they introduce five economic principles you will reuse throughout your economic course and in your daily life: (1) principle of opportunity cost, (2) marginal principle, (3) principle of diminishing returns, (4) spillover principle, (5) reality principle. Economics: Principles and Tools is an excellent resource and textbook for anyone who has a limited knowledge of economics and is willing to learn these five economic principles.

This book was very easy to read, it can be classified as an intro to Econ. It is used in the 201 class at UTK. It is however not that great when it comes to examples.

The funniest book ever written!.......2007-06-16
This book, although humorous, is a brilliant attack on the Matriarchy. What constitutes the "Matriarchy", you might ask? It's our entire unholy society that we live in that deifies women. This includes the marriage/divorce industry, the medical profession, the feminists, the lesbians, and of course, THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH.
This amazing book attacks them all with equal zeal, and does so in a way that will keep you laughing at every page. I can't recommend it enough. It goes hand-in-hand with "The Predatory Female", and is produced by the same publisher. If you read these two afore-mentioned books, along with Esther Vilar's classic "The Manipulated Man", and "Sex-ploytation" (if you can even find a copy for under $150), then you will be sufficiently armed to protect yourself against the cursed Matriarchy, that seeks to ensnare and destroy men.

I was surprised to see our old group at UCLA mentioned by the authors of this book. It brought back a lot of memories from the 1960s, which were a turbulent and transitional time for all of us. This book captures the spirit of living in the San Fernando Valley sub-culture during those years, with all the craziness and insane values festering there, resulting in the nightmare it is today.

While these resources aren't new anymore, I have used some of his ideas as springboards for some of my own compositions. The section on rhythm as well as the section on Tone Combinations were particularly interesting. These are some ideas that I wish would influence music outside of the classical realm more. Too many kids are stuck in a bland world of 4/4 rhythm, and tonal theory learned from half a**ed guitar lessons.

The book is for absolute novices. I haven't found anything of use for intermediate (and above) windows developers.
Maybe my expectations were wrong, but I was looking for more of a best practices book.
user interfaces without richTextbox control?.......2005-01-26
i still can't believe it--that anyone would write a comprehensive book on windows user interfaces and forget to mention the RichTextBox control. The author devoted 3 pages to the Textbox control, but said virtually nothing about one of the the most powerful text display controls.
As said by another reviwer, there is nothing here on threading either. This book deserves 3 stars but no more because it is incomplete.
That said, I still must commend the author for a well written book that flows from one chapter to the next.
If you must get this book, bear in mind that you will have to look elsewhere to cover the omitted areas.
Outstanding overview of WinForms development in general.......2004-10-28
I've "grown up" in programming working exclusively with the Web, and recently moved into the very unfamiliar world of desktop development. This is a fantastic piece of work that gives you a very high-level view of the major concepts and considerations you'll need when attempting to conquer the world of Windows Forms.<br/><br/>
The book starts out with a brief discussion of some of the more visual aspects of great UI design, which, as author Matthew MacDonald describes, is as much technical as aesthetic. It then dives right into the major concepts of WinForms - forms and controls, and many of the secrets and tips on using them to create familiar, effective UIs for your apps. Examples are alternate ways of achieving drag-and-drop functionality for on-form controls, creating floating toolbars for and maintaining synchronicity in MDI apps. <br/><br/>
It's very real, very practical, and very easy to grasp. <br/><br/>
I was found MacDonald only mentioning certain class members for each of the controls, and the "members" tables listed in the book don't explicitly break the members down into properties, methods and events, which clouds a newbie's learning of a new set of classes and their functionality for the first time. That's about the only criticism I have with the title. <br/><br/>
The book's finest moment is evident in what has got to be one of the best written chapters on the often-complex topic of working with data and databinding in WinForms. It's thorough, yet easy on the brain in terms of laying out how to work with binding in simple and complex environments. <br/><br/>
The book isn't a primer on C# or on programming in general, so the code snippets are largely piecemeal, abstracted modules of much larger Windows Forms and components. But this isn't necessarily a bad thing.
dodges multithreading.......2004-08-12
No detailed coverage of the Progress Bar control. Reason: so that multithreading and concurrency could be avoided. It is a common GUI programming task to allow a user to cancel a long running operation while keeping the GUI updated and responsive. However, this requires spawning off a separate thread to handle the long-running operation. That thread must also be able to communicate with the main GUI thread. This must be performed carefully but it is easily done by experienced GUI programmers. You won't get coverage of that with this book. Good luck....

A book for experienced developers moving to .Net.......2004-06-15
I'm finding this book to be a tremendous leg up in transitioning to .Net from VB6. For an experienced programmer trying to move from VB language functions to .Net object methods, this book strikes the right balance in showing and describing how to use the .Net control objects. It supposes you've used each control before, and need a reliable introduction to how to employ the .Net replacement.
MSDN has all the technical details you want, but is lacking in the kind of "big picture" overviews of a control. This book provides that invaluable introduction.
It seems to me this encapsulates most of the knowledge it takes to consider onself an experienced .Net developer. And yes, there are VB to C# copy and paste errors, but this isn't really a C# book so much as a .Net book. And a very fine one, I'm finding.
