Just the road trip book I was looking for.......2007-08-07

I am a road trip ethusist. And therefore, when I came across this book, I knew I had to buy it. What I like the most about this book is the careful selected trips the author put together. I have been to about 10% of the trips outlined in this book and when I read through those sections, this book is right. Not only does it tell you where the "must see stops" are, it also tells you approximate mileage, time needed, as well as other useful information for your trip. And flipping through those spectacular trips in the rest of the book made me want to explore U.S. that much more. I highly recommend this book as a starting point, or the main source, for your road trip planning.

The Book Description in the Editorial Review describes "the LIFE Scenic Drives Atlas." Which may be a book that exists somewhere. But it is not this book. From the description I expected an ATLAS, a collection of maps along with descriptions of marked scenic roads and highways, and included somehow, a photographic record of what these drives are like. (The review does mention "detailed maps".)

Instead there is a 2 page introduction, two satellite images of the US (east and west) with a red dot for each of the 40 drives the editors selected, and for each of the 40 drives there is a phone number you can call (about half toll and half toll-free) and a web page where one can get information about the drive.

This is followed by about 160 pages of pictures with some chamber of commerce type text and a lot of pictures. To be fair, the pictures are often excellent and a few are gorgeous. The text on the other hand is there to extol the beauties or interesting aspects of the drive, and in not at all informative about what the drive is like or even how to get on it. They depend on the phone numbers and web pages for that.

If it were advertised as a coffee table book, I would have no objection. But it is advertised as a reference and an atlas which it certainly is not.

Not for the faint hearted.......2005-09-20

This album is for the head banger. For the casual listener, there is no way in. But since this is about the book and not the album, here's a bow shot: There is no tablature in here. So if your skill lies in reading music, this is the place to go but don't expect any fret numbers laid out for you neatly to go home, have a few beers and play along. I doubt if Gilmour himself will be able to play along this stuff considering he cannot read music. Additionally, here's a bit of trivia for you. The outro solo on Pigs on the wing - Part 2, was crafted and executed by Snowy White and not David Gilmour, as is usually thought. In conclusion, this is one of PF's heaviest albums and worth learning to read notes to play the stuff. Have fun

NO Tablature!.......2005-08-04

I thought I'd save everyone the trouble and let you all know that this book does NOT have the popular Tablature format!
Otherwise, the book has a nice collection of photos and essays as well as the music in standard format.

Pink Floyd Guitaring & lyrical cynicism at its best.......2000-04-05

The animals is not generally known for it's musical prowess. It was also admitted by the band that they needed something badly for a tour and threw in this material. While waters dominates the album's song credit, David Gilmour's contribution to it's music has not gone unnoticed. Dogs features some of David's best guitaring and of which he admittedly was very proud of. For him as well, It is not his normal run of the mill solo. Historically for Floydians, it is a track(the solo parts) that Waters accidentally erased and that Gilmour had to re-record. Anyway, It is subtle in the guitar sound and has a pace remniscent of Money, all the luscious signature Gilmour bends. Also sonically, It is an altered tuning that is tuned down a whole step on all strings. Pigs features some repetitive musical parts, the only musical highlight being the outro solo with good bass finishing things off. This solo is a good example of Gilmour's lyrical playing. Rarely does he move around in this solo between too many notes. Instead his attitude is compositional by just staying around a few notes riding it high with bends and vibrato. The two solos are a must for progressive guitarists and there is a lot of learning here in terms of feel and those huge bends. Sheep, not to metion, has some unusual guitar playing on it as well and is a great track and fantastic usage of biblical psalms by Waters. Lyrically, Roger has put George Orwell's Animal Farm to good use here and in Rock & Roll format. It is his lucid observation of the workings of society and the evils that go with it that makes Pink Floyd the band they are and worthwhile listening to.

A truly entertaining book!.......2000-09-02

I wasn't quite sure what I was ordering, since at the time I ordered this book, no reviews had yet been written.

But I'm delighted I ordered it from Amazon!

It is a compendium of the most interesting, funny "pieces" about marriage, from marriage manuals of the 20's to movie posters that as stand-alone objects, are absolutely hilarious.....to songs about love and marriage...you name it, it's in here! The editors/authors really obviously had just a ball writing and collecting this, and their humor and enthusiasm carries, BANGO, right through to the reader.

If you've been reading too much heavy literature, as I had when I ordered this book, this will really lighten you up.

I nearly died laughing over the blurb about "OPEN MARRIAGE" by the O'Neils in the late 60's (or was it early 70's). In my first, most ludicrous marriage on earth, my first husband was a great believer in this, had me read it, and at the time, I took it quite seriously. What a hoot to read it again now and see how truly ridiculous it was! And it was such a sign of the times!

Each and every entry takes you back to the time it was written (even if you weren't around then), and really gives the reader a strong sense of the times.

The only things I'd have changed? I would LOVED to have read more deeply into the marriage manuals of old, would have loved to have read much more in detail on those....and I would have really loved to read at least a longish blurb from the "marriage/romance comic books" they mention only by title. I think lengthening these two aspects would have made me give this book a five-star rating.

No matter how you feel about marriage, you simply won't be able to resist being entertained by this book.

Wedding Bell Blues doesn't make me blue at all!.......2000-06-07

Wedding Bell Blues takes a refreshing look at marriage through a different angle than just another "how-to" or "this is what's supposed to happen" book. It has a vast compilation of movie posters, advertisements, and magazine covers that chronicle the marriages of fictional and real couples. If you are an entertainment buff like I am, you'll like this book as it has many quotes from entertainers and the like. One of the best parts of this book is reading through the obsolete sex/marriage manuals. This book is great for anyone, not just newlyweds or soon-to-be weds!

Adrift in the skies of the Bronze Age.......2004-04-28

The novella is a tricky form in which to write--it's too long to be a short story, too short to be a novel. With that in mind, I was relieved to see that FALLEN GODS not only succeeds as a novella, but as a reading experience on the whole.

The world of the Bronze Age comes to life through Blum and Orman's writings; this isn't a story set in our world but with fancy outfits, but one deep in the culture and beliefs of the Aegean Sea. The story itself moves at just the right pace, opening with our protagonist literally dropping into this time period, as well as introducing the first manifestation of our "villains". As we as readers learn more about the truth of the fire bulls and the royal palace, alliances form and are broken, and nothing you knew is truly correct.

Most importantly, as a novella FALLEN GODS is able to boil a plot down to its basics, but still has enough room for Blum and Orman to leave in the little details that are hallmarks of their writing. Could this have worked as a full novel? Possibly, but it would need additional subplots and stories tacked on board to make up the rest of the space. As a novella, though, it's near perfect. One of the high points of the Doctor Who Novellas line from Telos Publishing; well done.

Doctor Who? No-one I recognised!.......2003-10-21

I must admit to being very disappointed with most of the Telos novellas released so far. I've come to the conclusion that a large part of this dissatisfaction is due to the fact that I'm a very `traditional' fan, and the majority of stories so far fall way outside the scope of a `traditional' Who story. The only book I've felt worth keeping from the range so far, is Foreign Devils - probably the most traditional of the lot.

After reading the latest novella Fallen Gods, I felt obliged to put fingers to keyboard and express my opinion. Lets get this out of the way first - I'm not a Kate Orman fan. In my opinion, her books have generally been readable, but not much more, and Left Handed Hummingbird is easily one of the worst DW novels ever written - a DW book in name only with the 7th Dr being totally unrecognisable. So, my opinion of Fallen Gods?

Kate Orman has perpetrated the worst sin an author can commit - she's bored her readers! When I received the book in the mail, I was pleased to note that it was the longest novella so far released. By the time I was about 10 pages in, I started wishing it had been the shortest. I was bored with this novel almost from the first page! The pace was morbidly slow, the plot virtually non-existant, the main characters uninteresting and the 8th Doctor unrecognisable (maybe I've missed something in all my years of watching and reading DW, but how often did the Doctor go around killing his `companions' because they didn't do what he wanted them to?)

As a (very) short story, this may have been redeemable, but as a 140 page novella, don't bother.

Needs to be updated, not enough information.......2005-11-13

This seems to have been written for the previous iteration of the BCMSN. There are some inaccuracies and I'd say that 40% of what's covered on the test is not in here. You will NOT be prepared for the test if you have only this. The Cisco Press and Exam Cram 2 are good but some practical knowledge is also required with the new test.

A Great Book!.......2004-04-29

This is the second book from the Sybex Cisco Certification series I have purchased (after Todd Lammle's excellent CCNA book), and I was equally impressed with this work.

The layout was up to the standard I expected, and I found the text flowed along nicely with sound explanations that were easy to understand. Some of the labs use CatOS-based switches, and I am told that Cisco is removing these from the exam, but they were useful to me as we still have some in our network.

I particularly liked the chapters on QoS and switch operation, which I thought were covered in good detail, and I found studying from this book to be a rewarding experience, both in exam success and educational terms.

Based on the quality of this book I shall be buying more from the same series when I prepare for the next exams in the CCNP certification.

A sloppy production.......2004-03-06

I used the Cisco Press CCNA Certification Guide to pass the CCNA exam and then used the Sybex BCMSN Study Guide to study for the exams. Not only I found big different between the contents, I also found the production quite sloppy. Found some misprint in the book but according to sybex.com, there are no updates to this book, while there is a 4 page errata to the Cisco Press BCMSN Certification Guide, which I eventually pay an extra $50 for. Did the exam and found some terms which I have never found in the Sybex book while some of the chapters were not in the exam at all. Very surprised.

This is the second CCNP book I have purchased (and my 8th Cisco Press book). I have mostly been satisfied with the quality and reduced number of errors/typos in these technical books until now. This book is filled with errors and typos. For example, Catalyst 4305, Catalyst 3570, NAS = Network Area Storage, DCHP snooping, MFSC, Fire Services module!, etc. One figure is repeated twice to illustrate two different concepts. The questions and answers numbering dosen't match in the appendix. The text doesn't reflect the figures in many instances. Finally, the author mentions concepts without explaining them. There are even some mistakes in command line examples!

This is very disconcerting because it is the Cisco authorized self-study book for CCNP switching FOUNDATION learning. "Foundation" learning???? Having almost finished reading it, I am not understanding MANY concepts mentioned. I cannot beleive the 3 technical reviewers did not catch all these errors and improved the convoluted writing style before the book went to press.

Overall, the quality of this book leaves much to be desired.

I seriously think I made a mistake purchasing this book which I thought would be the best considering this is the Third edition!! Consider another BCMSN book like the one by David Hucaby (ISBN 1-58720-142-9) instead. It HAS to be better than this one!

Very soon this book will take the place of Cisco LAN switching which is a must read for everyone preparing for the CCIE R & S and CCIE Security Exam. It covers all the latest features and even though a lot of concepts presented are outside the spectrum of the CCNP (Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks) Exam they are needed for a complete understanding of the Catalyst switches. Now the BCMSN exam is not what it used to be and so reading book gives the necessary confidence needed to take this tough simulation based exam.
It explains in depth the building blocks of Cisco multilayer switched networks from mostly a Catalyst switch and Cisco IOS perspective which is capable of configuring both Layer 2 and Layer 3 features. Cisco multilayer switches offer additional Layer 2 features to enhance the availability of networks and to as an aid in troubleshooting and even though these services are not mandatory features of multilayer switched networks their use is recommended as among the best practices in the industry.
The book explains in detail the various commands available for troubleshooting purposes and when to use them as well as the output to expect from each.
Each chapter discusses a single feature of the multilayer switch in detail along with it implementation, troubleshooting and its benefits to the network.
Cisco Catalyst switches provide a wide range of QoS features which address the needs of voice, video and data applications sharing a single infrastructure. The coauthor Richard Froom, CCIE # 5102 is a technical leader for the Data Center, Switching and Wireless (DSW) Storage Area Networking (SAN) Test Lab at Cisco Systems.
The coauthor Balaji Sivasubramanian, CCNP, is an escalation engineer for the Gigabit Switching Business Unit (GSBU) at Cisco Systems.

Good Prep for current exam.......2005-04-08

I bought this book to use in my preparation for the simulation-based BCMSN exam. I needed to renew my CCNP/CCDP and did not want to take the composite exam so I opted to take both the BSCI and BCMSN. I pretty much used only this book to prepare (of course, I had passed the previous version of this exam so the previous statement is not completely accurate). I passed with flying colors and credit this book. I would recommend it for that purpose.

Outstanding CCNP Resource.......2005-02-02

This is an exceptionally well-written book.

I'm in the process of renewing my CCNP and am finding this work to refreshingly accurate, well written and well edited - which unfortunately is not always the case with Cisco Press books.

As a result I'll be picking up a copy of the author's Catalyst QOS book soon.
