The ingenious Robert Sabuda returns for yet another inspired pop-up book, a follow-up to The 12 Days of Christmas and The Christmas Alphabet, that retells Clement Clarke Moore's classic yuletide rhyme.
Sabuda remains a master of the medium, constructing a series of varied and well-engineered scenes: Santa pops in and out of the chimney, beds fold out, a window shade rises and falls, and, in a clever nod to Moore's not-a-creature-was-stirring text, it's a family of mice who are receiving Santa's nighttime visit. A pull-out tab even lets readers interact, when Santa's sleigh glides out on the clouds and over an intricately realized village. It's hard to pick a favorite scene here, but you can bet that kids will love the book's pop de résistance, in which Santa's lead reindeer nearly fly right up your nose (if they don't knock you out of your chair first).
The book's first-rate production and lively pop-ups are enough to recommend it, but Sabuda goes one better by showing the thoughtful restraint to make most of the pop-ups almost entirely white. A few accents of color catch your eye (Santa's red suit and silver pipe), but--as befits such a dynamic book--the visual focus stays on the action. (All ages) --Paul Hughes

Its a great book for both adults and children. I bought this book for myself as the Pop-Up its fun and for when my grand children come to stay with us to read it at bed time and they can also see all the wonderful Pop-Up to expand their imagination and to make books and reading a joy and something they will always remember when they are grown up. I still remember all te Pop-Up books I had as a child. Highly recomend all books by Robert Sabuda for children and adults alike.

Too good for kids!.......2004-10-03
No, only kidding, this is of course a super book for your kids and you. I recently bought my first Robert Sabuda book, the 'The 12 Days of Christmas' (ISBN 0689808658) and what an amazing pop-up creation it is. What really pleased me was the half page flap on each right-hand page, so as well as a pop-up on each spread there is another to discover underneath this flap, twelve pop-ups in all.
The 'Night Before Christmas' book is even more dazzling and I bet it pushes to the limit what is possible with a mass-market pop-up book. The format is the same as '12 Days' (though there is no flap on the sixth spread) but it is more creative, just wait till you open spread three and eight reindeer don't just pop up they jump towards you at the same time, spread five has Santa popping above the top of the book. The last spread is the most ambitious, a little village arises, with six cottages and background clouds, pull a tab and Santa (printed on clear plastic) travels across a snowy gap in the clouds. The book is printed in flat graphic colors and there is a clever use of white card stuck on itself to create additional three-dimensional effects.
Sabuda is to be congratulated on creating some stunning paper magic that really does have to be seen to be believed. Children (and grown-ups) with a sense of wonder will find this pop-up book quite enchanting!

This is a great book. I have read the one in the Random House Pictureback series. The illustrations in the book are what really stand out. They are colorful and detailed and go great with the writing. They are some of the best illustrations I have seen in a book. This is a great book to read to younger or childern. The story is great but the illustrations are what really makes it a great childrens book.
Wonderful Version!.......2006-09-08
Some of the reviewers seem confused about which version this is. I am referring to the Random House Pictureback version that is illustrated by Douglas Gorsline (ISBN 0-394-83019-9). The version I am referring to is not abridged or censored. It even includes the line about the pipe and smoke.
The illustrations are stunningly detailed and authentic. They remind me quite a bit of the beautiful illustrations in another children's classic "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs". Make sure to look for the cat in all the pictures that take place in or around the house! You will never tire of reading this one to your little one! I will warn you, however, that this book might wear out quickly because you will read it so often!

Great book for the Network Administrator. Layed out like the "for dummies" series, but doesn't say "For Dummies" so you don't have to be embarrassed to have it on your bookshelf at work. It is very simple and easy to read. Each appendix is a Windows 2000 roll-out scenario complete with screen shots of each wizard box. I like this book and I'm sure I'll be referring to it often.

Very focused on administration and management - very easy to read. The chapters on site design and configuration and replication are worth the price of the book. If you're justing starting to learn AD, start with this book. It's clear and orderly.
