To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the publication of L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz, master paper engineer Robert Sabuda has created a pop-up version of Dorothy's adventures in Oz that fans will find hard to resist. Modeling his depictions of Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the rest after W. W. Denslow's original art, Sabuda adds a third dimension that would have rocked Denslow's--and Baum's--world. A rapidly spinning cyclone actually casts a breeze over the startled reader's face. Glorious red poppies wave seductively in a field. And the Emerald City positively glitters with green, especially when young readers try on the special tinted "Spectacles for You" provided in a pocket on the page. The abridged text, provided in minibooklets set onto each page, covers enough basics for the Oz novice, but we recommend a read-aloud of the original, as well, for all the glory and detail of Baum's fantastic tale. Sabuda's homage to the classic is truly spectacular; even purists will gasp in delight at the sight of the humbug wizard floating away in his shiny green, gold, and blue hot-air balloon. This great introduction to the story of Oz doubles as a fun collector's item. (Ages 3 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

Robert Sabuda has created a resplendent pop-up version of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the original publication. This glorious edition is told in a shorter version of L. Frank Baum's original text, with artwork in the style of W. W. Denslow. With sparkling touches of colored foil and Emerald City eyeglasses, this classic tale is certain to find an honored place on the family bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars Captivating.......2007-08-23

This is the first pop-up book that I have seen since I was a child, and I must say, pop-ups have come a long way! I bought this for my 6-year-old neice, and she just loves it. The pop-ups are so imaginative, there are mini-books throughout, she loves showing it to people with the admonishment to "be careful!" The story is different from the movie, it conforms to the actual book, but she hasn't seemed to notice. I actually read it cover to cover before I gave it to her. It's a wonderful collector's item and keepsake (if it doesn't get destroyed by her baby brother!)

I gave this pop-up book as a Christmas gift to an adult and the recipient was in awe over the detail and the intricate paper explosions. The tornado is so cool! Not for young children!! It was one of the best gifts under the tree.

except the little bent corners of it.
but the inside, the most important part of this kind of books, was just beautiful, perfect.

        Book Description

The world economy is on the brink of a profound crisis. The threat of global deflation and the emergence of chronic excess global capacity characterizes the contemporary phase of crisis and stagnation. Lucarelli argues that these pathological features of globalization acquire a remorseless logic during the "mature" stages of monopoly capitalism. He explores the historical origins and theoretical tendencies of this protracted crisis from a Keynes/Kakecki perspective.

              Book Description

North Between The Houses is a collection of very funny, often ribald anecdotes collected over thirty years of service by former Detroit Police Chief, Isaiah "Ike" McKinnon.

Many of the stories speak to the hardships and heartaches that only battered urban royalty like Detroit can sustain yet endure. Racism and poverty are common threads woven into these tales. As are hope and humor.

              Book Description

While many soldiers in the army of the Confederate States of America fought on famous fields like Gettysburg and Antietam, others demonstrated equal valor in lesser known places. Here are collected, for the first time, the accounts of four little known pieces of Confederate history. These four pieces are important components in understanding Confederate life in both small and large scale.

The first section concerns the battle of Dinwiddie Court House on March 31, 1865, the last significant Confederate victory and the prelude to the battle of Five Forks the next day. The second section chronicles the experiences of Col. Charles C. Blacknall of the 23rd North Carolina Infantry, whose letters offer insight into the life of an officer and his personal struggles before his death from wounds received at the battle of Winchester. The third section examines a tragic and bloody series of conflicts and retaliations in southeast Missouri that demonstrated the revenge and violence against civilians that often erupted during the war. Finally, the history of General Hospital Number One, at Kittrell Springs, is analyzed, including accounts from the hospital's chaplain and its chief surgeon, and many of the last words they recorded in the performance of their duties.

These four accounts illustrate very personal experiences of war by Confederate soldiers, in their own words from letters and diaries, period and contemporary photographs, and maps.

4 out of 5 stars Confederate Courage on Other Fields.......2000-07-19

This book delivers what it promises... 4 battles you surely would not have studied (unless you happened to be a "local" to one of the sites), seperate from one another but tied together by the crimson thread of Courage.

              Great Stuff!

I highly recommend reading this book if you are a fan of Military History, a student of the "Civil War", or simply attracted to real acts of Heroism & Courage from an era blessed with a level of integrity and grit that is only a faded memory to America today.

5 out of 5 stars Uncommon Courage - Common Confederates.......2000-07-03

To borrow the words of Shakespeare, "Courage mounteth with occasion". Far from the grand movements of the armies, the great battles and the central figures of the Civil War, one finds thousands of examples of personal courage of men who met the occasion, but have been largely forgotten by history.

Mark Crawford in "Confederate Courage on Other Fields" does great justice to four of these lesser-known stories of sacrifice, bravery in the face of great danger, suffering, and devotion to duty by men fighting for the Confederate cause. I found each tale to be well researched, insightful and easy to read.

"'Tisn't life that matters! `Tis the courage you bring to it" -Sir Hugh Walpole. I believe Colonel Charles Blacknall of the 23rd North Carolina Infantry, as described in Crawford's book, exemplifies the courageous leadership exhibited by many men of the south. A wealthy, educated planter, Blacknall hated drilling, the study of tactics and many of the trappings of the military. However, belief in a cause led him to great accomplishment, at a price of personal sacrifice, ultimately his own life. As you read his letters, and gain insight into his devotion to his family, and his love and understanding of his men, you will admire this fellow who gave all for what he believed in.

My primary reason for buying this book was my lifelong interest of events in the bitter struggle for control of Southeast Missouri. Though considered a backwater of the War and often ignored by historians, the violence of partisan and guerilla actions in these border counties profoundly affected everyone living in the region. Instead of a five-hour skirmish or five-day battle, the fate of this area was sealed in five years of ugly, shocking bloodletting and destruction. Most folks fled. In many parts of Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas the bitterness remains to this day. Crawford's treatment of the conflict between Major James Wilson on the Union side and Colonel Timothy Reeves on the Confederate side is the most fair, accurate and honest I have read. A consequence of this contest was the execution of prisoners on both sides. In reading this account you will come to appreciate the bravery and gallantry of men caught up in a struggle without rules and often driven by revenge that discouraged noble actions.

You will finish this book with an expanded understanding of the "Brother's War", and the tremendous sacrifice of the average Confederate soldier as he faced danger in a courageous or fearless manner. I hope Mark will consider a sequel exploring the courage of Union men. I heartily recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars McClendon has another winner in 2nd Dorie Lennox book.......2002-09-25

Dorie Lennox's assignment is to tail the spoiled heiress-to-be, Thalia Hines, daughter of an old acquaintance of Dorie's partner and fellow private eye. Evaline Hines is dying and desperate to be sure her beautiful but wild only child doesn't become involved with too many of the wrong kind of fortune hunting men that she seems so drawn to. So she has hired Amos Haddam and Dorie to keep an eye on Thalia. The assignment means lots of late nights in night clubs and dance halls as Thalia jumps from admirer to admirer.

The present front runner for Thalia's affections seems to be Barnaby Wake and there are rumors that Mr. Wake is involved in a lot of unsavory pastimes, when he's not directing the Hallelujah Choir at the Plaza Methodist Church. Wake is not only married; he has been linked with several other women and his politics seem to lean toward support of political troublemakers in the days just before America enters the second World War. Definitely not prime son in law material!

This book is a terrific look at 1940s Kansas City as seen through the eyes of tough but vulnerable Dorie Lennox. Many of the characters from the first book are back, along with the tight plots and fast paced action that kept the reader guessing in 'One O'Clock Jump'. Can Dorie stay out of jail and out of trouble long enough to do her client's bidding?

I hope that Lise McClendon is already working on her next Dorie Lennox book. There is still a lot I want to know about this character. I also really enjoy the early 1940s setting and the fact that the action takes place in my hometown of Kansas City, Missouri. This is a real winner of a book and a definite "5"!

                            Book Description

Sweet and Lowdown, Woody Allen's film from 1999, starred Sean Penn as the legendary, but fictitious jazz guitarist of the '30s, Emmett Ray. Emmett considered himself to be the second greatest jazz guitarist in the world next to Django Reinhardt. The versatile Howard Alden played all of the solo acoustic guitar parts for the movie, as well as coaching Mr. Penn to play guitar for his role (for which he received an Oscar nomination, best actor). This book contains note-for-note transcriptions in both standard notation and tab of Howard's Django-esque interpretations and improvisations of classic standards of the 1930s, as well as original solo guitar pieces written by Woody's longtime musical director, jazz pianist Dick Hyman. Sweet and Lowdown contributed greatly to the recent renewal of interest in and revival of swing and gypsy jazz guitar. Howard's guitar work is a warm and personal example of the timeless musical vocabulary of swing guitar.

3 out of 5 stars What were they thinking?.......2007-07-27

Like many others, I was charmed by the solo piece in the movie, 'I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles' and bought this collection for the purpose of learning it. Not an easy task considering that this song was incomprehensibly left off off the movie soundtrack, even though it was singled out by many critics and fans as their single favorite moment in the film. But armed with the tab, I sat down and prepared to press pause on the DVD until the cows came home. Sad to say, the transcription seems to be of a completely different version of the song than what appeared in the film. Numerous omissions and inaccuracies follow, notes left out, different chord voicings, etc. In any case, the tune isn't that difficult, but the point is, I think it shows a certain contempt for the rubes like me who buy this crap. I haven't attempted any of the others, so you'll have to take your chances there!

                            5 out of 5 stars Alden's Sweet & Lowdown.......2006-10-29

For the intermediate to advance guitarist this book is a goldmine of ideas. It show the thought process of one of the greatest jazz guitarists alive today. From it you can learn how to use scales, diminished arpeggios, and repetitive figures, among other things to enhance your melodic improvisation. I highly recommend it.

Suggestions are constantly being made, both in the popular media and the academic literature, about the kinds of changes schools should make. While there are many books that discuss internal change processes in schools, there has been little attention to the interaction between schools and the larger society. The research in this book shows that schools are primarily inward-looking organizations, and would benefit from better ways of understanding the changes surrounding them and the pressures on them. Schools need to understand that there are no formulas or recipes for this activity; they must stop looking for ready-made answers and focus instead on their own situations and the very real limits on their ability to respond. This book offers theoretical discussion of the issues and a set of suggestions for further reflection.

Of the many excellent television series made in the 1960s, some have received critical acclaim; others are fondly remembered; a few created scandal. Only "The Prisoner" produced all three reactions; and it generated a world-wide following that is still growing. In addition to an episode-by-episode breakdown of the entire series, this book contains an interview with Patrick McGoohan, the program's creator; essays about McGoohan's career, the making of "The Prisoner", the real "Village" - Portmeirion in Wales, and the Six of One Club: and critical reviews of the series by Roland Topor, Roger Langley, Jacques Sternberg, Isaac Asimov, Christian Durante, and Francois Riviere.

This is a beautiful guide to the classic television series, The Prisoner. It is richly illustrated with many color photographs from the series, and its location of Portmeirion, Wales. It's a terrific vehicle to re-visit the series and learn about what it took to produce this program. Since A&E is currently re-releasing The Prisoner on VHS and DVD, it is too bad that this book is out of print, since I think viewers would enjoy some of the background that this book provides.

At the heart of the book is an in-depth summary of the 17 episodes that make up The Prisoner. However, it is more than just an episode guide. The book also contains a brief interview with Patrick McGoohan (circa 1989), a series of essays about the program, a description of Danger Man (McGoohan's secret agent series before The Prisoner), a biography of McGoohan, background on the creation and filming process, information about the real village of Portmeirion, and information about Six of One, the official Prisoner fan club.

It's a very informative and fun book written by two fans, who are still able to turn a critical eye on the series. The essays about the series by various authors are also very enjoyable. I especially loved the one by Isaac Asimov. The one negative I have about the book, is that there seemed to be a printing problem with my book. In the chapter outlining the creation and production of the series, I had one section repeated twice, and another section appears to have been omitted. In spite of the printing defect, this is a fun book for Prisoner fans, and if you can find a copy I highly recommend it.

This book has a wealth of source material. Sometimes watching the series can be a bit nebulous. This book easily aides you in knowing what each episode wished to convey. There are a massive amount of photos for each episode, and in making. The book also has several in dept articles in which Patrick McGoohan tells his motivations, and about making the series. If you are a Prisoner fan, you know that information about is pretty scare, then again it was all about information wasn't it?

A man resigns from his job. He heads home. He's followed. He packs a suitcase. He falls unconscious. He awakens. He's in his apartment. He looks outside. He isn't in London anymore. The Prisoner: A Televisionary Masterpiece provides an in-depth look at one of the most brilliant pieces of work in television history. Alain Carraze and Helene Oswald provide an in-depth summary to a 17 episode plight of a man who is trapped in a resort like community simply known as the "Village" from which there is no escape. Several attempts are made to break his mental integrity, but he perseveres by maintaining his individuality. The book also features an interesting interview with the star and creator of the series, Patrick McGoohan, essays from fans and writers such as Isaac Asimov, and an in-depth look at the making of the series. Anyone looking for an intriguing, highly intellectually stimulating experience should read this book, because "The Prisoner" is relevant to each and every one of us. Reviewed by John K.

The world of IT is always evolving, but in every area there are stable, core concepts that anyone just setting out needed to know last year, needs to know this year, and will still need to know next year. The purpose of the Foundations series is to identify these concepts and present them in a way that gives you the strongest possible starting point, no matter what your endeavor.

TCP/IP Foundations provides essential knowledge about the two protocols that form the basis for the Internet, as well as many other networks. What you learn here will benefit you in the short term, as you acquire and practice your skills, and in the long term, as you use them. Topics covered include:

                                        5 out of 5 stars Excellent foundation.......2006-08-21

This book had everything a non-expert would need to understand the basics of the TCP/IP protocol and networking.

It helped me greatly to better understand networking and the OSI model.

The tone is very readable. And the use of graphics was good but could be better

Overall, I recommend this book to anyone who is trying to build a strong foundation in networking. I loved the IP address allocation and subnetting chapters. It really cuts to the chase so the reader can be doing real work in a matter of minutes. I expect to see rapid updates to this book.

I'd like to see the WINS chapter removed and replaced with a few more chapters about IPV6.I like the authors to go more in depth on IP version 6.
