Let's get one thing straight right off the bat. Children love books with flaps. They can't get enough of them. And this book has many, many flaps--over 60, in fact. Something else: children are crazy about Thomas the tank engine. Translation? Very young readers will happily spend a lot of time lifting and learning with this big, bright, colorful board book. Early learning concepts are reinforced on each page, as readers are encouraged to explore their knowledge of colors, numbers, sizes, everyday objects, and the alphabet. Thomas the tank engine travels through the pages, starting out early in the morning in the train shed and moving through the stations, dropping off parcels and passengers, and finally ending up in the freight yard with car after car full of important objects to be delivered, such as milk, doors, a piano, a kangaroo, and xylophones. Children should be allowed to roam freely over the pages of this book, making up their own stories related to the pictures they discover under the flaps. (Ages 2 and older) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

5 out of 5 stars Great Share Time Book!.......2007-09-06

I am enjoying this book for the third "time". The kids enjoy lifting the flaps to see what is behind them and never seem to tire of it. We have explored the alphabet and learned new words. We have reinforced counting and touched on basic math. This book helps spark the imagination and the stories that little ones can come up with are marvelous. I have 3 very different grandsons, but this book has given me hours of enjoyment with each one of them in their turn. It is the book most requested during visits from Nana.

3 out of 5 stars Good for 2 year olds.......2007-07-23

We've gotten a good 4 months use out of this book, with several fringe benefits to lifting up the tabs and looking. We can practice recognition of the trains' (where is Percy, Thomas, etc.), look for colors, make sounds (the cuckoo clock, dog barking, trains of course). The numbered flaps are a little hard to see, but still fun to look. When I was able to keep them from tearing the flaps off entirely, we enjoyed the anticipation of looking underneath them. Worth the price because it's interactive and parents can make more of the pictures than just the flaps if so inclined.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-07-19

We have 2 of this book so we could leave one at granny's. My son loves Thomas and this book. The reason it only got 4 stars is the lift flaps are not all that durable and we are missing some out of both books.

4 out of 5 stars Big Quality Book that will become a favorite...........2007-07-04

The only reason I didn't give it five stars is there is no story- but that only seems to bother the parents. Both my boys love this book (age four and five) and it's a frequent pick at bedtime. The cardboard is heavy duty and the doors are firmly attached: they still close after two years and none have torn off! It's over sized, so all the details are easy to see... and there is ALOT to see! The scenes are spread out over two facing pages with each having a different focus: from the alphabetical freight cars A to Z to counting in the cargo cases and opposites in the depot. The lack of story might be on purpose as we spend a lot of time taking about what's going on in the different scenes. If your little ones are Thomas fans- it's a bonus, but not a requirement.
Hope your children enjoy this book as much as mine... well maybe a little less (I do get tired of the same book night after night after night... ;)

5 out of 5 stars Lots of fun.......2007-06-29

My two-year-old likes this book a lot. There are plenty of flaps to look under. The pages are about things like colors, numbers, and the ABCs. I was a little sad there wasn't a story, but my son doesn't care.

                    Book Description

The events in Seattle and other cities around the world demonstrate that globalization and trade liberalization are currently under severe pressure. There are also reasons to believe that these pressures are being translated into measures to increase the protection of domestic markets. This book addresses what are arguably the four most important origins of these pressures: macroeconomic conditions, labor policy, trade and the environment, and market imperfections.

The authors first address the role of macroeconomic conditions and policies, and demonstrate how these can have a crucial role in explaining `slippages' of trade policy. The second origin of instability is labor policy, in particular the pressures to introduce universal labor standards. The third economic origin the book considers is the relationship between trade and the environment and the attempts to link trade policies to environmental standards. The fourth origin of protectionist pressure comes from the presence of various market imperfections and the extent to which they affect competition. The authors conclude that multilateral agreements can be extremely helpful in creating the right environment for equitable trade policies, but warn that complete success can only be achieved once major hurdles are overcome in the highly controversial and politically sensitive areas of labor, environment and competition.

Offering a unique perspective on the threat to globalization, this book should be widely read by students, practitioners and policymakers in the spheres of international trade, transition and development studies, and competition, labor and environmental economics.

I've never worked for the IRS but I got to believe that this is the kind of stuff I would see every day if I did. I laughed out loud many times at these stories. A suitable companion is Lorin A. Lee -vs- The IRS, a very funny cartoon book of IRS humor.

As a tax preparer I related well to the scenes in this book. This is all VERY true. If you dont believe it, work one tax season in an office!!

5 out of 5 stars a fascinating discourse on many aspects of information.......2007-04-01

Althought this book has been written 20 years ago, it is still very
fresh today. The bandwidth with which we communicate, and
our capacity for storing information have increased in the intervening
years, however the fundamental questions that are addressed here
have not changed much. In the first couple chapters, the author starts
with a very precise definition of what information and capacity mean.
This part is merely 50 pages in length, but makes this book worth
owning on its own - I wish somebody gave it to me when I was
                          learning about information theory.

The remainder of the book is devided into chapters dealing
with different aspects of information: text, speech and pictures,
including problems associated with their storage, processing
and intrepretation. The presentation is insightful, informative,
and, given that it is addressed to an audience of non-mathematicians,
surprisingly precise. Each chapter ends with a ligh-hearted essay,
some of which I found to be deceptively deep and insightful.

                          5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book.......2003-12-17

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I'd strongly recommend this book for anybody interested in how things have evolved in computing. Great insight into stuff we take for granted like compression algorithms, error correction.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating and captivating book!.......2000-03-30

I read this book over and over and love it every time. It covers topics that I teach from the standard texts, but it covers them in a way that makes it all make so much more sense to my students. This truly is an amazing book!

5 out of 5 stars A memorable book -- too bad it's out of print.......2000-02-19

This is a popular computer book about data compression and data representation. It was first published way back in 1989 and now eleven years later it's not in the slightest bit out of date. How many popular computer books can you say that about?

This book is very bad! I don't like to normally be so grim, but I will make an exception for this book.

This book is a true ER and George Clooney masterpiece. The book ties in a biography of ER's greatest star and the show its self. I enjoyed this book from the begining to the end. This book is equiped with every thing a true ER fan could ask for. This is a no brainer. If you don't like this book, you don't like ER.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT book about Mr. Clooney!.......1999-11-16

This is a great book that should be owned by anybody who is a fan of George, Nick, or Rosemary Clooney. There are some great pictures in it, and a Commic-strip about ER.

This book was great. George Clooney is absolutly great in every way. Read this book if you like George. Its worth the money.

1 out of 5 stars This book is a waste of time........1999-02-12

This is a terrible book. The writter fills up space with drivel gained through People magazine articles and Hard Copy television shows. The book breathlessly meanders through George Clooneys life leaving the reader to think; "so what". The book is further padded with listings of web sites that have at least some connection with Clooney and synopisis' of "ER" shows. Not only did I waste my money buying this book, I wonder if I can sue the writter for the time I wasted reading this poor effort of a book.

                            Book Description

Enterprise Application Development with Visual C++ 2005 teaches developers how to create practical business applications using managed C++ and Visual Studio® 2005. It offers best practices for coding and C++ development, including class programming, code factoring, source control, memory management, and interdependency and interoperability. Special attention is also given to new features in Visual C++ 2005, such as IDE enhancements, compiler features, ECMA syntax for managed C++, and C++ language extensions. Database application development, XML Web Service integration, and MSI deployment tools integrated in Visual Studio 2005 are also covered in detail. Throughout the book a wide variety of practical examples are used to illustrate features of the language. In addition, users learn how to create an enterprise application installation package from the ground up, which performs a full range of deployment tasks ranging from creating SQL Server database to registering and configuring both managed and unmanaged Windows and XML Web Services. After reading this detailed resource, developers and programmers will have all the skills needed to create enterprise-quality applications.

                            1 out of 5 stars Bad book.......2007-05-10

I cannot find this book useful. It's a heap of shallow text, harmful for beginners and unuseful for any other. It lacks of substance and it's full of errors and imperfections. Who want it?!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good, some rough edges.......2007-01-15

I bought this book because I'm a long-time C++ developer (mostly Gnu) and wanted to come up to speed fast on VC++ 2005. This book was good for that, although I'd not recommend it as a way to learn C++ from the ground up.

The book has two rough edges: (a) occasional proofreading mistakes (sometimes amounting to fairly serious errors of fact, more often just typos), and (b) continuous "moose and squirrel" grammar that omits definite article. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Article_(grammar) ) With those caveats, I'd recommend it for the same purpose I used it.

5 out of 5 stars A top reference for applications developers.......2006-08-05

Max Fomitchev's Enterprise Application Development With Visual C++ 2005 comes from a Moscow Ph.D. and covers the best practices for coding and C++ development. Plenty of practical real-life examples pepper instruction on how to use compilers, enhance and change database applications, and more. The fundamentals of successful coding and application development practices are imparted along with coverage of the latest Visual C++ 2005 features, making this a top reference for applications developers.

5 out of 5 stars Taking C++ into the .NET Environment.......2006-06-14

For programming enterprise level applications the Microsoft .NET framework has grown to some 30% marketshare (J2EE has about 40%). While originally .NET was developed to compete with the Java Runtime libraries as part of the breakup of Microsoft that was ordered by Judge Jackson, it has become a major thrust within Microsoft to help maintain their dominant position in the marketplace.

For developing applications Microsoft has developed the Visual Studio integrated development environment which supports the programming of applications in four languages: Visual Basic, C#, J# and of course C++. While Microsoft would prefer that you use their propriatary languages they still support C++ which is arguably somewhat more powerful than the other languages.

This book is a complete and detailed text on programming in C++ using Visual Studio 2005. It is highly oriented to the .NET Framework 2.0. The book is more in reference format than tutorial which makes it easier to find what you are lookin for when you go back to confirm what you've read. It is intended for both experienced and novice C++ programmers, but I don't think that it is suitable for the total beginner to programming. Some work beforehand on a beginning C++ book would be desirable, a lot of the minor details like language structure are not explained at the absolute beginner level.
