5 out of 5 stars Great book to read about and visit.......2007-07-04

Even though I had originally planned to purchase the book with a title something like 1000 places to see/visit before you die, I elected to purchase this one after I previewed its photos and layout online. Great book! Great service from Amazon!

5 out of 5 stars Great details and pictures!.......2007-03-18

Having trouble choosing your next exciting destination? This book makes it simple with detailed photographs, helpful visa and immunization information, as well as a "best time to visit" section on each destination. My new favorite travel book.

5 out of 5 stars Dreaming.......2007-03-16

A friend of mine had this book. The pictures are fantastic, BUT BEWARE, it will give you a severe case of wanderlust. Some of the places are not real well known, but after reading about them you want to see them.

5 out of 5 stars Great travel choices, decent photos.......2006-11-12

I bought this book to get travel ideas. I was not disappointed. It includes several terrific places I've already planned to go to such as Guilin, China, Ngorongoro Crater, and Bangkok, Thailand as well as many beautiful places I had never known about before. Only three of the places are from the United States so it does a good job of depicting places from every continent except the south pole.

The photos, for the most part, are good but not great. The author's explanation for that was that he wanted to use photographs that would accurately show how you would see the place if you go as a tourist, rather than show amazing photographs with beautiful sunsets that only happen once in a while. On the plus side it has multiple photos of each place as well as a six to eight page description of each place.

Another very good book is "Heaven on Earth: 100 Places to See in Your Lifetime." The descriptions in that book are very short, but the photos are better. There's not that much overlap since only about 15 places are in both books.

4 out of 5 stars Striking Photographs Support One Man's Perspective on the World's Must-Sees.......2006-07-19

I guess I should count myself lucky for having been to 22 of the forty places that travel photographer Steve Davey has identified as essential stops before dying. Along with a similar Time-Life photo essay book ("Heaven on Earth: 100 Places to See in Your Lifetime") and the Lonely Planet coffee table books ("The Travel Book" and "The Cities Book"), there seems to be a sudden flurry of these types of dream destination books on the market now. Even Patricia Schultz provides 960 more places than Davey ("1,000 Places to See Before You Die"), but the benefit of his entry is that we get a singular perspective based on the notion that we have a two-week holiday to get to each one of them. The usual suspects are here - the Taj Mahal, Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Machu Picchu in Peru, the Alhambra in Granada, Petra in Jordan - but there are some choices that are not as high profile and seem more personal to Davey such as Eilean Donan Castle in Scotland and Lalibela in Ethiopia. I am certain he would be the first one to tell you that this is not meant to be a comprehensive list since one can easily itemize the glaring omissions, but none of the forty seem superfluous.

Perhaps a slight exception is the inclusion of Manhattan and the Bund in Shanghai, both of which brings to question why other top-ranked metropolises are not included. Alas, this is apparently the start of a series of books Davey plans to put out, in which future volumes may put such questions to rest. The photographs are superb, and that is inarguably the main reason to consider purchasing this book. In case you're wondering, the remaining destinations are St. Petersburg; the Grand Canyon; Aitutaki in the Cook Islands; Pyramid of Kukulchán in the Yucatan; Iguassu Falls; Rio de Janeiro; Taman Negara Rainforest in Malaysia; Havana; Wat Phra Keo in Bangkok; Venice; Dead Vlei in Namibia; College Fjord in Alaska; Jaiselmer Fort in Rajastan; Karnak Temple in Luxor; the Galapagos Islands; Lake Titicaca; Greece's Santorini; Drakensberg in South Africa; the Great Barrier Reef; Tibet's capital Lhasa; Ephesus in Turkey; Monet's Garden in Giverny; both Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar in Tanzania; Makalu in the Himalayas; Australia's Uluru (Ayers Rock); Varanasi in India; Guilin in China; Dubrovnik; Samarkand in Uzbekistan; and Killlary Harbour in Ireland.

5 out of 5 stars One of the funniest, most delightful books I have read in a long time........2005-11-25

The Torah with a Twist is one of the funniest, most delightful books I have read in a long time. Author Joe Bobker makes learning the Torah a fresh new experience with an edge of excitement.

The jokes are very witty and well thought out. Each one relates to a particular message bringing them to life in a special way. A friend of mine gave me the book as a gift for my birthday, and I am glad he did.

I have never been that religious, but the author makes learning about the 10 Commandments, God Almighty, Creation, and the exploits of people like Lot, Abraham, Noah, and the "Rebel with out a Cause" (Moses) an interesting and fun experience throughout. It's accessible and yet still presents the Torah in full vibrancy, grandeur, and color. The message of the Torah is relayed simply and entertainingly, so everyone can understand it, not just the super elite studied group. I really enjoyed it.

I can't wait to see what this author writes next!

1 out of 5 stars A lame attempt at combining humor and the Jewish tradition.......2005-06-22

Joe Bobker, an Australian who is the former publisher and editor of the Los Angeles Jewish Times, seems to have felt that one could produce a good book by combining the close study of the weekly Torah portion with the telling of hundreds of old, musty jokes. Then Bobker went ahead and wrote that book. He should have resisted the impulse.

This is an odd volume indeed. It contains roughly 50 chapters, each corresponding to one or two of the weekly Torah sections read in synagogue services, and it is evidently intended to acquaint the reader lacking a profound Jewish education with the subtleties of the biblical texts. But in this book, brilliant comments by Hasidic rebbes, kabbalists, and Talmudic scholars vie for space on the page with some of the world's worst howlers.

If the jokes were funnier or newer, or if there were fewer of them, this concept might have had a slight chance to work. After all, Jews know how to laugh. The festival of Purim is dedicated to laughter, merriment, and learned parodies known as "Purim Torah." But instead, Bobker treats us to tired jokes about intrusive mothers-in-law, worn tales about greenhorns who just arrived in America, and bromides about kids in old-fashioned cheders and condemned spies facing the firing squad and henpecked husbands facing their spouses. The reader is not likely to be entertained but rather to feel beaten into submission.

Bobker seems to have written down every joke he ever heard and splayed them all over these pages. This is not funny.

Short & sweet: An excellant reference book. The CD at this time isn't much value as it was defective. No one's fault, just one of those things that sometimes happen in reproducing CDs. Have not yet recieved the replacement CD. Don't know if I will. Will have to come from the book publisher. The seller did a fine job. No complaints. Just starting the bass. This book is a bit advanced for me right now but I have it in my collection and glad to have it.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful book with some useful advice..........2007-05-30

I've been playing guitar for 5 years (self taught), have a band going but never really played live much until recently and I never really knew much about effects, amps and guitar "tech" type stuff. I ordered this book because I spent all my time learning how to play well, but not learning much about gear etc. And it's a little embarrassing being able to play fairly decent but not knowing crap anything else. This book certainly helped in that department.

There are a few different kinds of tips in here. Some are technique, music theory and exercises, which are mixed in throughout. Most of those I didn't really find all that useful because I have my own ways of practicing and such, but having all the modes written out was nice to have as a reference.

Then there are stage tips and guitar/amp maintenance tips. Most of these were helpful to me. A lot are just random things about stringing, adjusting action, picks, pedal boards, travel, and most types of effects are explained in an easy to understand basic way.

This book will probably be too "primitive" for professional guitar players, but of course thats not who it's really targeted at. For people starting to play live, or looking for some general advice on basic guitar stuff this will probably serve as a helpful starting guide to having a more well rounded knowledge of guitar.

                        4 out of 5 stars Good.......2007-03-11

I liked many of the tips in here. I really liked the chord progression tips the most. The scales he does as the first tip is nice and opens up some nice info for me to learn. I like how he refers to them as patterns because I can memorize patterns and formulas very easy in math so I figure that it may help me here too.

                        5 out of 5 stars i want it!.......2005-01-08

I have yet to purchase this book, but I saw it in Guitar Center a few months ago and I skimmed through it. Very nice. more than just how to play certain riffs, lots of good little nuggets of advice, like the more live experience the better, and I think this was in there, how you should always tuck your chord in the inside of your strap. Very practical and useful information.

5 out of 5 stars Authorýs Notes for 101 Guitar Tips: Stuff All the Pros Know.......2003-11-20

101 Guitar Tips is the result of my own 30 years playing experience, plus knowledge gathered from the hundreds of celebrity interviews I've conducted through the past 20 years as editor of www.Guitar.com, as an author and editor for music publisher Hal Leonard (for whom I've worked on numerous excellent guitar instructional books covering blues, jazz, rock, country, scales, chords, and more), and as a writer for most of the major U.S. guitar magazines and many of America's largest newspapers.

I've also worked for Fender, D'Addario, Guitar Center, Musician's Friend and smaller music stores, and I ran vintage guitar site Gbase.com for a couple of years. I've guitar teched for Sammy Hagar, and of course I've played in countless bands.

101 Guitar Tips covers a lot of ground, including scales, chords, riffs, music theory, gear setup and maintenance, equipment selection, career advice, things to make your music-making trouble-free and more enjoyable, and much more. There's something for everyone in this book, whether you're a beginner, intermediate, or advanced player. All musical examples are written out in notation AND tablature, and many are illustrated with neck diagrams as well.

I've included many excellent tips and suggestions that I got first-hand from celebrities such as B.B. King, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Pete Anderson (Dwight Yoakam), Warren Haynes (Allman Brothers), Rene Martinez (Stevie Ray Vaughan's guitar tech), Tom Dowd (legendary producer), and many, many more.

And the 53-track CD (included at no extra charge) offers you the opportunity to learn and work on many of the riffs and chord progressions described in the book. You can use it as a play-along, jam tool as well.

I've written this book to be an easy, fun read, with just a touch of dry humor (or is it simply a veteran musician's hard-earned sarcasm?) thrown in for good measure. I hope you'll get a good laugh out of some of it, because a sense of humor is definitely a plus for any musician!

101 Guitar Tips makes an excellent learning product, and a great gift. I'm currently (November, 2003) working on my follow up book, "101 Recording Tips," which will help solve problems and create better recordings for anyone with a home studio or heading into a pro studio. Watch for this book to come out through Hal Leonard in 2004.

Other books I've authored or edited for Hal Leonard include "The Picture Chord Encyclopedia" (yes, that's 2,640 pictures of my left hand, playing every chord imaginable), "Incredible Scale Finder," "Blues Solos for Guitar," "Country Solos for Guitar," "Hard Rock Solos for Guitar," and "Jazz Solos for Guitar."

If you've purchased my book 101 Guitar Tips, and want me to clarify anything in the book, feel free to contact me at adam@guitar.com.

                        Keep on pickin'!

You can't find a smarter, more savvy, and learned couch potato than John Leonard, the literary editor of The Nation and television critic for New York magazine and CBS Sunday Morning. In the pages of Smoke and Mirrors he accomplishes something close to the unthinkable: he creates a convincing case for the merits of our collective viewing habits through thoughtful essays on what television tells us about ourselves. At times Leonard's knowledge of television programming can be overwhelming, as he clicks through the history of long-canceled programs with a frightening intimacy. In contrast to real T.V., Leonard always offers up something worth tuning into. He treats our tired, media-saturated eyes to such topics as what detective programs reveal about out confidence in the individual, how our sense of national coherence has fractured into multitudinous channels of individual identity, and what talk shows express about the need for a collective legitimation. Leonard's arguments might not always sway the reader, but unlike the boob tube, he rarely disappoints.

                          Book Description

The probing, provocative examination of television that Rolling Stone called "dense, funny, and smart as hell." In Smoke and Mirrors, John Leonard, one of the nation's leading media critics, offers a provocative challenge to conventional ideas about television. Instead of scapegoating television as the cause of crime in our streets, stupidity in our schools, and spectacle rather than substance in our government, Leonard sees something else inside the box: an echo chamber and a feed-back loop, a medium neither wholly innocent of, nor entirely responsible for, the frantic disorder it brings to our homes.

1 out of 5 stars Almost unreadable, meandering nonsense.......2004-03-12

The introduction almost holds together as John Leonard ignores the scientific basis of television research and counters it with indefensible but plausible-sounding arguments. Then he talks a little about Ed Sullivan. Then he wanders around for another few hundred pages tossing factlets into our faces, seemingly without ever making a point, using logic, or doing anything other than showing off his immense knowledge of TV trivia and inability to use reason. This is the worst book I have ever read, and that's saying something.

Each chapter is a wandering group of lists, as Leonard tosses out name after name after name, dazzling us with both the amount of time spent in front of the TV and his wonderful memory for actors and series - but there is no depth behind anything. No point seems to ever be made. It's like watching the images flashed in movie commercials - but for hours instead of 30 seconds. Watching too much TV seems to have left Leonard without the ability to focus his attention for any length of time.

Do yourself a favor and find a book written by someone who (a) can actually make arguments, (b) understands how research is conducted, (c) has something to say, and/or (d) can actually provide information rather than rambling on and on for nearly 300 pages about his opinions on this, that, and the other thing, in the end without imparting any information other than some useless facts about Ed Sullivan (in chapter one so you can save lots of time by stopping there).

I borrowed this book for free from the library and did not find it to be worth the price.

PS> Most of my other reviews have all been positive so I'm not some sort of crank ... nor do I think I disagree with whatever Leonard's main point is, though I have no idea what that might be. And ignore the "this refers to the hardcover edition" comment, it's both!

2 out of 5 stars Some interesting insights, but pedantic and overwritten........2000-06-21

Leonard has never really been my cup of tea for a variety of reasons. Nonetheless, this is a book of important, if limited value.

Unlike most people who write about television, Leonard is neither contemptous and condescending toward the medium, nor does he write publicist vetted puff pieces. Rather, he is an obviously learned and literate man who feels television is an undeniably important part of the cultural scene and worthy of taking seriously. There are some perceptions and insights here that are striking in their originality and in their ability to link some of TV's conventions with those of other art forms.

HOWEVER...In order to get to these few nuggets one has to wade through reams of prose that is almost unbearably purple and self-concious. On virtually ever page Leonard sees fit to let fly with a string of overblown metaphors that more often than not collapse under their own weight into one large puddle of incoherence. It often seems that Leonard is more interested in showing off his superior erudition and word-wizardry than he is in cleary and effectively communicating his ideas. As with other stuff by Leonard that I've read, this book either had no editor to speak of, or s/he was asleep at the switch.

The other major flaw in this book (from my perspective), is Leonard's flaunting of his puerile, tiresome (far)leftism. While he's admirably upfront about his biases, unlike some other cultural commentators, this doesn't make his inanities any easier to take(in some cases he is downright mean, if not mendacious). The gist of any point that he makes seems to be that if you disagree or deviate in any way from the world according to JL, you are not merely wrong, but also most likely an evil, selfish, hateful human being. His opinion on many TV shows seems unduly influenced by whether or not he approves of the program's politics (if a program has NO political agenda, he either has to huff and puff to invent one for it, or he feels it is unworthy of serious consideration)and whether it deals appropriately (or at all) with what Leonard has decreed are the burning issues of the day.

All in all, Mr. Leonard's continuing career is proof that the political right by no means has a monopoly on tiresome, hectoring, self-righteous gasbags.

                            Book Description

This is the first comprehensive introduction to multiagent systems and contemporary distributed artificial intelligence that is suitable as a textbook. The book provides detailed coverage of basic topics as well as several closely related ones.

Unlike traditional textbooks, the book brings together many leading experts, guaranteeing a broad and diverse base of knowledge and expertise. It emphasizes aspects of both theory and application, and provides many illustrations and examples. Also included are thought-provoking exercises of varying degrees of difficulty and a twenty-page glossary of terms found in the study of agents, multiagent systems, and distributed artificial intelligence.

The book can be used for teaching as well as self-study, and is designed to meet the needs of both researchers and practitioners. In view of the interdisciplinary nature of the field, it will be a useful reference not only for computer scientists and engineers, but for social scientists and management and organization scientists as well.

This is one out of very few books that exist on multiagent systems and distributed artificial intelligence which won't take for granted the reader. It has really taken me from elementary concepts up to industrial applications, passing over the actual "nitty gritty" of programming an agent. Many papers on artificial intelligence are just too mathematical for many readers, and those which have any application would describe what the program does, but only sometimes you get into knowing *how* the program does the trick. I personally would say the book is a "must-have-it", not only for those seeking to understand in concrete distributed artificial intelligence or multiagent systems, but also for any mathematician, physicists, computer scientists and engineer whose background touches somehow the concepts of artificial intelligence as a whole. Come to think of it, even any cunning philosopher of science could take real advantage of this book. Now then, concerning those industries which would like to have this book on their shelves, they would have to take in mind that this book is a departure point. A good one, but nevertheless only the start for deepening towards a concrete application the industry would have in mind.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Theoretical and Practical Book.......2001-10-31

Not a beginner's book: The technologies presented are relevant to (gasp) some real life problems. The treatment of Distributed Constraint Satisfaction problems was well written and usable. The initial treatment of all subjects was broad, delving into details after laying a sound foundation. Assumes a bit of mathematical sophistication on the part of the reader, but on the whole, well written, well organized and well worth it.

                            5 out of 5 stars Great Textbook.......2001-08-27

While perhaps this should not be your first book in AI, it should definitely be your first book on agents. It took me years to accumulate the knowledge present in this book, and it's a great survey of the field for the beginning investigator. However, while this is a great way to get started in agents, understand how agents can be used in intelligent applications (from distributed AI type problem solving, to resource optimization problems), and "get the agent paradigm," coverage of agent software engineering techniques is light. This is not a fault of this book - you will simply need other resources to understand the difficulties and current research in engineering multi agent systems (or indeed any concurrent distributed system). So if you are trying to figure out what to do with agents, or how agent systems work, this is the book for you. If you already know that and want help with formal specification of an agent, verifying your agents meet the specifications, etc. this is not the book for you. Understand that to build systems you will need both!

I have been using this book probably for an year now, and this has become indispensable to my work. The collection of authors in this book reads as an 'who's who' in multiagent systems and distributed AI research. Although, its' difficult to maintain continuity in edited books, the editor has done an commendable job. The authors provide a readable introduction to their area of expertise, and supplement them with an excellent bibliography...enough to get u started fast.

5 out of 5 stars It is a useful book that covers all aspects on the subject........2000-03-28

Thogh edited the book looks like a single authored text. The definitions are clearly presented with illustrations. The presentation is highly comprehensive. The book is thus highly readable with minimum effort. I liked the chapters on distributed problem solving and planning (Chapter 3),Learning in multiagent systems (chapter 6), Formal methods in DAI: Logic based representation and reasoning (chapter 8)and Groupware and computer supported cooperative work (chapter 10) very much.Readers of diverse interest in distributed artificial intelligence will find the other chapters equally interesting and useful. The book should be on the desk of anyone interested to learn the concepts of multiagent systems and technology.
