Book Description
In their first adventure as Master Librarians, Jack and Annie go to the city of Pompeii to bring back an ancient story that is in danger of being lost forever. Little do they know they are saving the myth of Hercules! But before they can find it, the town's volcano erupts in a mighty explosion. Just when things look hopeless, Jack and Annie get some unexpected help from a certain mythic hero - and the rest, as they say, is history.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent read for my 7-year-old.......2007-09-15
My daughter could not put this book down once she started reading it. She loves the MAGIC TREE HOUSE series so much!
Historically accurate.......2007-06-21
We paired this with the Discovery Kids Magazine on Pompeii and found out that this book is a great way to find out about Pompeii and what happened, not just as a tourist attraction. It really puts kids in the moment of the time period. Every detail, down to the arrangement of the city was accurate. You can actually find a map replicating Pompeii and show your child where Jack and Annie went. Wow. Talk about subject integration! You know it is a great book when you can go down the list of Bloom's Taxonomy and use the book to create activities for every level.
We are leaving today to buy every book in the series.
Perfect for homeschooling.
MY BOY LOVES READING.......2007-01-02
My 1st grader hates to put them down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. When he was in kindergarten, the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not given her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!
Vacation Under the Valcano - Magic Tree House #13.......2006-01-29
Shortly before leaving for vacation, Jack and Annie remembered that they needed to go to the magic tree house to solve a mystery. Morgan said "your aventure is going to the Roman times you need to find this book or it will be lost forever""WOW! I always wanted to go to the Roman times this will be fun Annie" said Jack.
The magic tree house takes them to the seaside town of Pompeii during Roman times, which was 2,000 years ago. Many Romans traveled to Pompeii for vacation. They built large houses called villas and planted groves of olive trees on the slopes of a nearby mountain called Mount Vesuvius.
As they walked into the town of Pompeii, they noticed there were no birds and the stream under the bridge was dried up. Once in Pompeii, a soothsayer said "go home". Jack and Annie walked by the town forum, public baths and the Temple of Jupiter while looking for the library.
When they get to the library, they start looking for the book "Vir Fortissinus in Mundo". After finding the book, Jack opened the door and noticed everything crashing down in front of them. The ground started to shake as Mount Vesuvius erupted into a deadly volcano. "That is what the soothsayer meant" said Jack.
Jack and Annie ran from the library and headed back to the tree house. As they ran, a great cloud of pumice, ash, and burning rock formed over the city. When it rained down on Pompeii,it coverd the town. They used pillows to cover their heads from the falling ash.
The tree house was in the olive grove on the side of the mountain. Jack and Annie were running towards the volcano while everyone else was running away from it. When they got to the dried-up stream, the brige. They were trapped in the pumice, when a big, strong man named Hercules saved them. He pulled them from the pumice and took them to the other side of the stream.
Jack and Annie made it to the magic tree house, which took them back home. Morgan made them Master Librarians and they went on vacation with their family.
Volcanos wow!.......2005-10-25
My son and I have been reading the Magic Tree House series for the last couple months and we love them. These are the first books that my son has taken a real interest into, checking them out and reading them on his own. Vacations under the Volcano is our favorite one so far. After checking out a bunch from the library we finally decided to buy a set, and he was so disappointed that this one wasn't part of the set that he bought it seperatly on his own. This book has sparked a whole new interest for him.
I like that this story is based on a real historical event. As opposed to some of the others, like Sunset of the Sabertooth, which is one of my least favorites. As far as the danger goes, which another reviewer mentioned, I think Mary does a great job keeping the stories exciting. They would really become dull if the kids only strolled through meadows. For another scary one try Earthquakes in the Early Morning.
On a side note, its good to read them in order, but we didn't and you definatly don't have too.

Great series.......2007-03-21
This is a great series...and it says right in the description it is a cassette audiobook. Its really awful someone would give this a bad review for any reason. A lot of audiobooks are still on cassette.. unfortunate but true.
Not a Set of Books!.......2007-01-10
I mistakenly thought these were books and as they were intended as a Christmas present, was terribly disappointed. You can't tell by the title that they are NOT books, but rather cassette tapes. I don't think my grandaughter even owns anything that would play cassettes in this day and age! Be careful what you are ordering!

Book Description
This strikingly original work challenges a familiar assumption within cultural studies: that cultural practices happen in an everyday realm that is potentially open-ended, involving everyone; whereas economics, by contrast, is alien, a force field determined by international financial interests and legitimized by the arid discourses of professional economists. The author argues that, in fact, for most people, most of the time, economic issues are a central part of everyday life.
Separating economics from everyday practices has resulted in seemingly interminable debates over the relative importance of economic conditions and cultural factors in determining the “real” configurations of power relations; it has also reinforced the perception that the capitalist marketplace, now global, permits no alternatives. The author shows instead that a kind of economic sense-making is at work, a “common sense” that conditions a great deal about how many people organize their lives and understand their powers as social agents.
“Common sense,” Gramsci recognized, is always equivocal, multiform, even contradictory, and economic sense-making is no exception. Thus the author pays special attention to conflicting currents of economic sense-making and their social effects, thereby showing how false the assumption of a monolithic and uniform Market actually is. He looks at a wide range of economic practices and assumptions, from transnational corporations and human resources management in the university, to the organization of such very specific markets as the breeding and sale of show dogs.
But Gramsci also understood that, no matter how equivocal and conflicted, common sense imposes parameters of possibility. No political direction is likely to be realized if it is not in some way deeply engaged in mobilizing some aspect of everyday common sense. Accordingly, the author’s ultimate concern in this book is to challenge what he calls “capitalist common sense,” to find, in the complex ensemble of often-conflicting assumptions that consolidate the processes of everyday life into “common sense,” alternative economies to capitalism—alternatives that are already here, in operation, every day.
In conclusion, the author argues for ways such everyday economic practices could be mobilized toward a countercolonial economics that might lead to the further invention of new and decidedly noncapitalist forms of economic organization.

Book Description
The author investigates the economy of the Internet sphere through the prism of complex numbers. These quantities introduce something fresh and pure in economic calculations and the logic of a new economy. With complex numbers the economic theory of the Internet sphere becomes more attractive and convenient. They require a careful treatment. Here we have specific arithmetic and algebra.

Book Description
Raised in Savannah, Johnny Mercer and his elegant, evoca-tive lyrics took New York and Hollywood by storm. Part of a golden guild whose members included Cole Porter and Irving Berlin, Mercer put words to some of the most famous tunes of the time-like 'One for My Baby,' 'Ac-cent-tchu-ate the Positive,' and the immortal 'Skylark.' His life was contradictory-Mercer was a chivalrous and kind Southern gentleman, but also a bitterly frustrated man, depressed, aggressive, and alcoholic. His lone marriage, to a woman he bested Bing Crosby for, was long and turbulent, and led Mercer to an intense affair with Judy Garland, who was the secret love of his life and the inspiration for his greatest songs. Based on interviews with songwriters, singers, and composers who knew Mercer-as well as unpre-cedented access to Mercer's papers, letters, manuscripts, and an un-finished autobiography- Skylark is a landmark book about one of the great and dramatic characters in twentieth-century popular music.
Customer Reviews:
I took a trip on a train ..........2005-08-18
Reading this book was like taking a long train ride through Johnny Mercer's world full of love, laughter and most of all music. I've always loved old Hollywood black and white movies and most of these are filled with the songs of Johnny Mercer. Skylark: The Life and Times of Johnny Mercer was a book I read in one weekend and look forward to reading again and again. The touching love story between Johnny and Judy Garland tugs at your heart as only star crossed lovers can. The heartache, firey passion and longing that pours out of his songs tells the whole story of their ill fated love affair that didn't stop even with her death. How bitter sweet must it have been for her to sing those beautiful love songs that he wrote just for her. And how deep was the pain for him to listen to her records when he knew she could never be his. I've enjoyed his music for many years and now to know the life behind the words makes it even more meaningful. No wonder the Angels Sing!
Skylark.......2005-01-05
This book was a good read, very informative, but contains a bit too much psychoanalysis. And I found the misspelling of Al Capp's name to be quite offputting.
The Heart & Soul of Savannah.......2004-12-19
I attended Kevin Spacey's sold out concert at the new Jazz At Lincoln Square Theater here in NYC last Tuesday (Dec. 14) and listened to his incredibly beautiful voice sing not only Bobby Darin songs, but classic Johnny Mercer songs. Not everyone remembers Bobby Darin & Johnny Mercer's album from the 60s; Two Of A Kind, but I do.
Johnny Mercer's business manager, Marshall Robbins, sent me a photo taken at one of their rehearsals, which is framed on my living room wall. Uncle Johnny (he was my godfather) and Bobby Darin (and Mr. Robbins) are eating Eskimo Pies as they look over sheet music.
Johnny Mercer was not only an American original, but a good human being. Savannah continues to hold him up as 'First Son' and probably always will. This is a wonderful book that makes him human with all the happiness, sadness and life's ups and downs. As I get older (I'm in my 60's now) I find myself going back to those glorious, sunny, happy days of Savannah where I grew up, and those wonderful Mercer songs we used to sing at cookouts on Tybee Island and Wilmington Island. This book brought back the old Savannah that lives only in the hearts and memories of those who are old enough to remember.
It is incomprehensible to me that we are only five years ago from Johnny Mercer's 100th Birthday. He and my dad grew up together. This book is for music lovers and people who want to know more about America's greatest song writers. It does not disappoint.
A Skylark he was!.......2004-08-04
If you've lived a while and remember the music of the '30s through the '60s, hum a tune and the chances are it will be one of Mercer's -- either lyrics or lyrics and music. The man was a phenomenon! Furia gives an even-handed account of Mercer's life, including the good, the bad, and the ugly. When he was sober, he was a prince, a genius. When he was in his cups, he was someone else. Furia gives us Mercer's Savana upbringing as a "southern boy," and that was always part of his persona. This is a book you will want to read and to skim as an encyclopedic account of his myriad works. "Skylark" is the perfect title.
THE MAN FROM SAVANNAGH.......2004-04-02
Upon reading this biography, one is incline to think that songwriting at the time was a lonely job. Most songwriters became alcoolics. It is quite ironic to think that JUDY GARLAND and JOHNNY MERCER were so well acquinted together.I always thought that nobody sang BLUES IN THE NIGHT and THAT OLD BLACK MAGIC the way JUDY used to sing them in the forties. Now i know that she was the inspiration for these songs. The book does well in trying to presents MERCER's life in good perspective but of course,it is not perfect. It is for instance hard to deal with the reasons why his wife GINGER could stayed with him such a long time. After all,he was rather nasty with her.Security was probably the key word in keeping the marriage alive.Like the author,i also think that JOHNNY's child years really played an important part in his songs. As he became older,JOHNNY becomes almost obsessed in recreating the imagery of his youth. This is almost like MARCEL PROUST and his famous A LA RECHERCHE DU TEMPS PERDU.I enjoyed the book because i learned things about him that i didn't know. The story of JOHNNY paying his father's bankruptcy with his share of CAPITOL ,and then forgetting to sign the big check is really something. His BROADWAY failures are sad but are unfortunately true.Still,JOHNNY MERCER remains the greatest lyric writer of his generation. No one will never argue over this.Between 50 and 75 of his songs are classics of the repertoire. What a feat! Thanks JOHNNY for the pleasure you provided for us music lovers.

Customer Reviews:
Dr. Who: The Third Doctor Handbook is a wonderful read........2002-08-06
Doctor Who: The Handbook - The Third Doctor is a great reference guide to the Jon Pertwee era as the dashing, man-in-action, earth-bound Time Lord from 1970 thru 1974. Superbly researched, authors David J. Howe & Stephen James Walker take us through the details of the development of the Third Doctor's adventures. The series now became more action packed. Featuring 8 chapters, focusing on actor Jon Pertwee, along with episode story reviews, production development, and also a feature on the making of the season 9 story, the 4 part "Day of the Daleks" (1972). This book has it all, which makes for some interesting behind-the-scenes information.
The Third Doctor Handbook is a great addition to any Doctor Who fans' collection. It also features an introduction by the Third Doctor himself, the late Jon Pertwee, written in April 1996, a month before he passed away. Published in 1996, this was the fifth volume in the Doctor Who series of handbooks.
A fantastic reference book for any "Doctor Who" fan!.......1999-04-02
The book, Doctor_Who:_the_Handbook:_the_Third_Doctor, is an excellent book in the "Doctor Who" handbook series by Walker, Stammers, and Howe. The book is divided into several sections for easy reference, contains an episode guide for the third Doctor's era with reviews of each episode, and provides a really nice overview of the era of the third Doctor and the events of the time period during which the episodes were produced and aired.
Personally, I wish the book had included more information on the discoveries/recoveries of lost Pertwee episodes, as well as their restoration to color; since, the stories behind these are very fascinating.
Overall, this is a very well researched volume; and, I highly recommend this book as well as the rest in the series.
"I am the Doctor.".......1998-12-01
Fans of the series, fans of Jon Pertwee's Doctor, or even to Jon Pertwee's other work are owed this volume from the Handbook series by Virgin Publishing. Like all of the books before it, it goes in depth into not just what and how (the late) Pertwee acted in "Doctor Who", but as well, much of the background info, behind-the-scenes, etc. which are a fan's necessity. Not only do I recommend this non-fiction paperback, but all the others in the series (there's seven altogether).

Excellent - for VFP 6.0 users too.......2000-02-09
I have numerous VFP books and am firmly a VFP 6.0 user. I have found this book to be awesome for beginner to advanced. Very, very well written.
I've actually found it more usable than the subsequent Que title "Using Visual FoxPro 6" - which has different authors and different approach. Que should have simply upgraded their 5.0 title.
You won't be sorry with this one.

The BEST Visual Foxpro 5 Book Ever.......1999-01-14
Simply the best book for learning Foxpro. Mr. Antonovich's style makes it easy to grasp all the new concepts that have come along with Foxpro's adoption of OOP model. Also an outstanding Foxpro and database reference.
Recommended for Programmer who new to Visual Foxpro.......1998-08-04
By the title itself 'Using...', simply means HOW to use Visual Foxpro? It is the best guide for developers who are new and for some who wanted to learn Visual Foxpro as a database development tool. For sure, the learning curve of a newbie VFP developer will be shortened when using this book.
Certainly not simple - But appears comprehensive.......1998-07-19
I am not new to XBase (FoxPro 2.6) and I was looking for something to help me make the transition. but this book doesn;'t do that. it appears comprehensive enough.. so comp[rehensive that it rattles me... I'm still looking for the right transition book John Fox
