A Good Welding\Cutting Overview.......2007-10-20
This book gives good generalized information on welding principles and practices. Also gives practical general welding repair methods. An asset to any bookcase.
A good textbook.......2007-05-14
A good "text book" stye publication covering a very wide range of welding and cutting methods, but not an ideal book for persons looking for an "introduction to welding" manual. I would have liked to see the author add some basic projects, leading the reader thru all the steps with some good photos of common mistakes and how to avoid them. Still a very worthwhile reference manual to have...
GREAT!.......2007-01-15
This is a very good book if you weld or just need to have info on welding
a must have
Great introduction to welding..........2006-06-11
With the purchase of a brand new Miller GMAW welding machine (wirefeed electrode), my boss entered us into the world of welding. Even though a 30 minute tutorial at the welding supplier was enough to get us started, I bought this book at a local retailer as a reference.
The format is one of simple question and answer that reads easily. The content is organized logically by type of welding activity. I opened to the first chapter on oxy/acetelyne cutting and read down the list as I fired up an OA torch for the first time. I found it supremely reassuring to have such direct instruction coupled with stern warnings. Apparently if I did not know what I was doing, I could have caused a serious explosion. I found nearly everything I could ask for in this book exept for practice welding. Of course I have lots of time for that now that I did not blow myself up.
Highly recommended for beginning welders or curious persons.
dynamite book!.......2006-03-06
This book is appropriate for beginners to experts. The book is written clearly and concisely. The examples and projects are top notch. Recommended to anyone who wants to know or wants to review any subject in welding and brazing.

Colorful American History.......2002-05-14
How could historians have overlooked such an important and colorful piece of American history? The book is a fast read and filled with vivid descriptions. Once you read it, you won't be able to believe that something like this happened in America.
This is an exciting read!.......2001-05-11
This book is probably the most complete and balanced view of the Mine Wars in West Virginia, an almost unknown yet significant part of American history. It details how and why things happened and gives very vivid accounts of the struggles of the day in the coalfields. This was the largest insurrection against our Federal Government outside of the War Between the States, and was the only time bombs have been dropped from planes on American soil. A must read for anyone interested in Appalachia or coal mining.
An interesting account of the coal wars.......2000-03-24
I really enjoyed this fascinating account of the coal wars of west virginia. Not enough has been reported about the events that occured there, and this book sheds light on the subject.

Book Description
Five essays explore aspects of aesthetics in classical Islamic thought in light of contemporary theories, offering new perspectives on Islamic art and architecture with examples ranging from the Qur'an and the Alhambra to the works of present day artists and philosophers. Tracing the roots of Islamic aesthetics back to the works of the philosophers of the Middle Ages such as Avicenna and Averroes, Valerie Gonzalez finds that aesthetic theory in Islam must be seen within the much wider context of parallel thinking on theology, ethics, physics, and metaphysics. She balances her analysis of this philosophy (moral, logical, and scientific) of beauty with the equally important analysis of the perceptual experience of beauty.
Book Description
Jacob Bernoulli's Ars Conjectandi, published posthumously in Latin in 1713 by the Thurneysen Brothers Press in Basel, is the founding document of mathematical probability. Here, Edith Dudley Sylla offers the first complete English translation of this monumental work.
Part I reprints and reworks Huygens's On Reckoning in Games of Chance. Part II offers a thorough treatment of the mathematics of combinations and permutations, including the numbers since known as "Bernoulli numbers." In Part III, Bernoulli solves more complicated problems of games of chance using that mathematics. In the final part, Bernoulli's crowning achievement in mathematical probability is manifest: he applies the mathematics of games of chance to the problems of epistemic probability in civil, moral, and economic matters, proving what we now know as the weak law of large numbers.
Sylla provides an extensive introduction and detailed translator's notes. She includes as supplemental texts Bernoulli's "Letter to a Friend on Sets in Court Tennis" and "Thesis 32" of Theses Logicae de conversione et oppositione enunciationum.

Book Description
In the last several decades, there has been an explosion in the number of amici curiae, or "friend of the Court," briefs filed with the U.S. Supreme Court. Amici are not formal parties to a lawsuit, but file to help inform the Justices about the wider repercussions of the case before them. Public law scholars have long discussed whether these briefs have an impact on the Justices. This book is the first study that seeks to assess the extent of amici influence. This work examines the role of interest groups in the creation and interpretation of the right to privacy, a highly controversial right that derived almost entirely from case law. It looks at amici participation in abortion, aid in dying, family relationships, and anti-sodomy cases. This volume tracks the influence of amici arguments and data on the Justices' handling of these cases.

Book Description
For the Love of It is a story not only of one intimate struggle between a man and his cello, but also of the larger struggle between a society obsessed with success and individuals who choose challenging hobbies that yield no payoff except the love of it.
Customer Reviews:
It's not just about playing the cello.......2006-02-24
It seems that most of those reviewing this book missed the point of it, which I thought the author made clear over and over again. It’s about doing something as well as you can for the enjoyment it brings – as an amateur. Although the book could have been half its length and been more effective, he did achieve his goal, which was to discuss what being an amateur is, where this fits into life and our culture, why being a professional at something symbolizes our goal-oriented society and our value of doing things for money, and why being an amateur is rewarding, satisfying and even noble.
The shortcomings of the book are probably the result of his being a professor of literature, causing him to expend space on quotes and discussions that are more peripheral to the topic than enlightening. He doesn’t disparage other forms of amateur endeavor, such as painting, but does spend most of his time relating his cello playing experiences with his life and what those experiences brought to him. It’s what he calls amateuring. This book is not about how to play the cello better.
I think the real value in the book is about how someone loves what they do for a hobby, is pretty good but not great at it, and finds practicing both valuable as an activity and essential to developing and improving one’s skills. His discussions about playing with others and in front of audiences are enlightening and raise valuable issues in terms of the experience of playing a musical instrument. These discussions are worthwhile enough to justify reading the book.
He gives hope and encouragement to being an amateur. In a world in which fame and fortune seem to be the most desirable goals, he makes a very good case for enjoying what you do for its own sake.
Some funny vignettes in an overblown book........2005-11-22
Having played chamber music as a seriour amateur most of my life, I recognized with a smile some of the anecdotes which the author recounts of his musical evenings. This is 5% of the book.
The rest is overblown pretentious musings on the nature and value of amateurism with a watch-me-go display of unpersuasive humility and academic erudition about other irrelevancies.
If you've played, you know the few charming parts already. If you don't, this book is largely filler.
Not recommended.......2004-05-06
The premise of this book is compelling. There need to be books written about the dignity and deep rewards earned by the true amateur. Unfortunately, this book lacks that depth. The author robs himself of dignity with complaints at great length about partners, teachers, and even the instrument. In a chapter titled "Seduced By the Cello," he speaks only of it being comparatively easier than his other options. Nowhere does he even describe the cello: its sweet-sad character, its almost human tone, the surprising sensations it gives to players and audience of its power, the fascination and variety of its repertoire, etc. In a chapter called "The Zen of Thumb Position Maintenance," he does not even define or describe thumb position or how to maintain any of cello's skills.
I am a cellist and teacher. I often look for books to encourage, inspire adn sometimes console my students of all ages. I hoped this book could help me articulate for students the true rewards and healthy attitudes of a good amateur musician, and even to redeem the connotations of amateur. It tries to do so, but is too much a personal diary and too self-referencing. As yet my best discoveries for adult students are still "Making Music for the Joy of It," by Stephanie Judy (1990), and the perennial classic "Playing the Piano for Pleasure" by Charles Cooke (1941).
For Cellists Only (Not for Painters).......2002-06-27
I was prepared to warm to this book because of its promised inclusion of other amateur endeavors besides the cello. But to these he gives barely a nod. The writing blends self-centered prattle with compulsive journal entries. Another disappointment--rather, jolt--was his two brief paragraphs about painting on pages 184-185. Given his sympathy and respect for amateur musicians, I anticipated a reflection on painters who, like myself, struggle to express in our work a hard-won understanding of color, two-dimensional space, depth and authenticity. Instead, he writes, "Well, there are so many amateur painters around, and their stuff is generally so awful, that they almost tempt me to cancel this book..." Thus, I could not recommend this book to amateur cooks, painters, photographers, writers, tennis players, gardeners--or anyone other than amateur string players who don't know how they feel and need someone to tell them. For the rest of us, our time is better spent doing what we love rather than reading about it.
Quite charming!.......2001-10-16
I recomend this book everyone who loves playing the cello.
This book will make you smile.

Book Description
Human phenomena are often abstracted from their historical context for the purpose of furthering the fundamental understanding of that phenomenon. But to fully understand any phenomenon, especially socio-technical systems such as ceramics, we must remember to return it to its place. This series is dedicated to the study of ceramics, not only as a scientific and engineering endeavor, but also as a cultural and commercial movement. The essays in Volume VI support the position that social, cultural, economic, and political factors are an essential part of new ceramic technologies.

Book Description
Tadeusz Kantor, who lived from 1915 to1990, was one of Poland's most important artists: he painted, created, directed, mounted happenings and founded a key independent theater in Krakow. Along with his own works on paper, objects, photographs and films, The Impossible Theater brings us his descendents, artists of the younger generation, represented by installations, performances and projects. Like Kantor, they cast themselves in roles that call for mediation in the social world.

Many users learn the basics themselves, but often stumble when using the tool. Paint Shop Pro 7 For Dummies will guide you to choose the right tool for your project, explain how to use it effectively, and help you understand what aspect of the image needs to be altered.
Customer Reviews:
Great Reference.......2007-03-08
This is THE book I go to any time I need a reminder on how to do something, or when I need to learn a new technique.
It is very thorough, and very well written so it's easy to understand.
Excellent documentation but . . ........2005-09-18
This concise and thorough documentation of the software is what is says: "Not a tutorial". Some of us need a tutorial.
Almost Perfect Order.......2003-09-29
Paint Shop Pro 7 for Dummies is friendly, jovial, and takes the fright out of the jargon in this software. I liked the way David Kay starts the reader with the easy way of using each tool and then gently leads us into the wild and wonderful possihilities for each one. My only annoyance is that his mind does not move in the same order as mine does. That may be an advantage for him and for other readers. All in all, he did a great job of making beautiful but tangled software into something usable and powerful while still beautiful.
Wriiten by dummies not for dummies.......2002-04-15
I found this book exteremly hard to get into. I kept looking for a part of the book where I would find some good examples to follow to get me started. The person that wrote this book made a study of the menus and interface but I don't believe they ever made practical use of the product. They need to get someone that actually understands the software and the field of graphics to write the book.
I'm sorry to say, but I think they need to go back to the drawing boards with this book. What a waste of money.
