Rehash of stuff from the web.......2007-02-15
More up-to-date info is on the web for free.
Not that good...........2006-08-15
Bought the book with higher expectations; it only does an introductory job into the field of WiFi, containing and gathering info you can readily find over the net, and does it half way. Would only recommend it to someone with no particular knowledge in the field, who knows what Wifi is, but has no clue after that. Could make a nice gift for a 12 yr old tecky
A must have!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-05-12
This book is excellent, a must have. This book gives you the all the basic theory you are going to need to undertand wireless, and of course Cool Proyects.
Excellent book.......2005-08-27
This is a book for those who have a little bit o' cash, a little bit o' time and a little bit o' tinkering skills. The projects are easy and useful.
EXCELENT BOOK - EASY TO FOLLOW - BRILLIANT A+++.......2005-07-28
I have been toying with the potentual of Wifi and its various applications over the last 12 months. This book illuminated areas that i never thought were possible to the average person.
Within one week of the arrival of WIFI toys i had begun building a WIFI hotspot in my area using the details in Chapter 10 - Creating a free wireless hotspot. The hardest part of it was setting up the Linux system (Linux is free!!) but after following the instructions and purchasing a few inexpensive parts on Ebay i had a hotspot running for all my neighbours.
The antenna pages are superb and make it easy to follow and build out of next to nothing. Range extension, Selfpowered repeaters (yes you heard that right).
I even loved the final chapter 15 - Making a wireless Digital picture frame (Woww - cheap and easy).
overall this is a fantastic book with tons of insight into the mysterious and invisible world that surrounds us every day. Weather your into Wardriving (searching for wifi) or building cool toys this book will make you the envy of the neighbourhood when you drive down the road with wireless video link between you and your freind car.
Great book, well worth the read.

Book Description
Since the Civil Rights Era of the 1960s, minority groups have seen a tremendous amount of progress, but African Americans, Latinos, and American Indians still remain severely underrepresented in science, engineering, and mathematics. And although government, industry, and private philanthropies have supported more than 200 pre-college and college-level initiatives to increase the access and retention of minority students, the outcomes of these programs have not been well documented. This book from the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME) presents definitive essays by leading research scholars, academics, and industry representatives on the participation of minorities in science, mathematics, and engineering. Its extensive coverage includes essays on current demographics, entering the education system, influences on minority participation, barriers to success, and preparation for academic careers. It is ideal for scholars, researchers, educators, and policymakers who study and strive to break the barriers of discrimination.

The jeweller, a stout, comfortable man, leaned on the counter and fingered lovingly the bracelet which he had lifted out of its nest of blue plush. Archie, leaning on the other side of the counter, inspected the bracelet searchingly, wishing that he knew more about these things; for he had rather a sort of idea that the merchant was scheming to do him in the eyeball.

Purchase one of 1st World Library's Classic Books and help support our free internet library of downloadable eBooks. Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - It wasn't Archie's fault really. Its true he went to America and fell in love with Lucille, the daughter of a millionaire hotel proprietor and if he did marry her--well, what else was there to do? From his point of view, the whole thing was a thoroughly good egg; but Mr. Brewster, his father-in-law, thought differently, Archie had neither money nor occupation, which was distasteful in the eyes of the industrious Mr. Brewster; but the real bar was the fact that he had once adversely criticised one of his hotels. Archie does his best to heal the breach; but, being something of an ass, genus priceless, he finds it almost beyond his powers to placate "the man-eating fish" whom Providence has given him as a father-in-law

Hotel de Wodehouse.......2005-02-09
In addition to an avid enjoyment of the Drones, Jeeves, golf, and Mulliner tales, I find I am developing a marked taste for Wodehouse's light novels. Everything he touches, it seems, turns to laughter. Other places the commedia del arte takes place in motion picture studios, on cruise ships, at resorts on the French Riviera, but here the venue is the Hotel Cosmopolis, drawn, no doubt, from his observations of New York nightlife. And here's Archie, a good-hearted, bumbling Brit out to seek his fortune in the colonies. And of course he met a girl while vacationing. And of course she's a millionaire's daughter. And of course said millionaire is proprietor of said hotel. Does it sound like a formula? Right ho! a formula for fun. Richard Usborne says this book is a lot of stiched together stories. But so what? Ukridge is a lot of not stiched together stories. This book introduces one of Wodehouse's best heroines, Lucille, as the power behind the throne of the Lucy/Archie axis, together pitted against her anti-Archie father. How can you not order it?
A Must-Read!.......2000-03-28
Poor Archie! Trying to win his stern old father-in-law over, only to land himself in deeper trouble! Getting locked out of his artist friend's apartment in a scarlet bathrobe, and many more such money-making schemes gone haywire, including those to get his f-in-law's approval. The portrait gone awry, and the shoes left outside the door.... Oh no! I'm not going to tell you anymore, you just must read this, and you'll find yourself laughing uncontrollably wondering how you ever thought the world was a drab place! With Wodehouse, there is always laughter in the world!

Very well done guide and reference for Ableton Live 4.......2005-01-02
This is a really a great book to 1) help you learn Live 4 better, 2) get better in-depth coverage of some old and new areas in Live, 3) see new ways of working with Live, and 4) have a great guide to supplement the Ableton provided manual.
I've been getting a lot out of Live since Live 3, and this book has been a great tool in quickly learning some of the new features of Live 4, as well as picking up a lot of great tips.
It's written well, and put together for the person who wants to get a lot of tutorial-style info, methods to use Live quicker and smarter, and get even more musical goodness out of Live.
Very happy I bought this book, an easy 5 star recommendation.
Enjoy!

This book really helped!.......2004-12-22
Although I had gotten my feet wet using Ableton Live 4, I didn't realize what I was missing until I read this book. I am now much faster and can do a lot of really cool stuff that I didn't even realize was possible with Live before reading this book. It's also much easier to read than other technical manuals I've read, written in an engaging, conversational style that is easy to understand while imparting some pretty deep knowledge. Actually inspired me to dig into Live and try what I was learning. I highly recommend this one!!
Incredible Software, Amazing Book.......2004-12-22
Having used this program for quite some time, I thought I pretty much knew everything it could do. Boy, was I wrong. Chad Carrier brilliantly guides you through all the incredible features of this software, and he does it in a way that doesn't leave you scratching your head. I was surprised to discover just how much this program can do. If you are a musician or a producer, Ableton Live is one of the greatest new music making tools to come along in years. This book does an incredible job of explaining all the many features in Live 4, and I highly recommend both the software and this book for anyone who has ever wanted to get into making music on their computer. I'm inspired. OK, back to the studio!

Only worth the £11 I paid for it...........2005-07-12
When I paid £11 for this book I thought I would only get £11 worth of information...now that I have finished the book I think I was correct.
This book seems to have been put together by some one with no first hand knowledge, infact 3rd hand. Every topic is covered in an overview with no specific details, names of brands, costs, etc...which is the main reason most people buy this book. I believe this book could have been better if some one googled and compiled all the information.
Very good book, but there is room for more.......2002-07-01
Ok, If just half the clubs in this town were to read this book, they would probably stay in business longer than a year. This book is very well thought out and covers alot of little gotcha's in designing a night club. Gotcha's that in my experience most club owners ignore or don't know about, and then wonder why nobody comes to their clubs.
My only critism is that the author could have explained things further if the book had more pages. He summarizes a ton of infomation well to fit in the books alotted length but really on the business side of things, I suspect he could have filled another book altogether.
Good, but could be better.......2002-02-01
This book covered much of the same info as in other start-up books for bars/clubs, but definately points you in the right direction for things to think about and consider in owning or starting a nightclub. Aside from the numerous grammatical errors I am pleased with the book. This book should have been proofed better before publishing, I found an error about ever 10 pages (along with some strange wording). I would like to see a bit more on financial price breakdowns and models along with more info on contacts and ways to go about getting the tools/contacts you need. All-in-all this was good brain food for thought.
Informative.......2001-09-10
Excellent book for anybody who hopes to someday open and run their own nightclub or bar. This book talks about what it takes to open a club and run one. Being a bar owner is not as easy as it seems and this one tells you what you need to know. The appendix, with many drink recipes at the end of the book was also very helpful and educational about mixing drinks. This is definitately a must read for anyone in the bar business or hoping to get into it.

Customer Reviews:
So-So.......2000-11-06
This is an okay book but for the price it's not worth it. The information and numerous quotes from various nightclub owners and managers, contained within is semi-helpful. Anyone looking to seriously run and operate their own nightclub should definately find a better book that gets down to the step by step basics. Most of what is presented in this book does little more than give a few ideas. The book itself is also very cheaply manufactured as it seemed to fall apart on it's own after only a short time. This book is okay, but for the price, one can do better

Book Description
From AM radio to color television, broadcasting raised enormous practical and policy problems in the United States, especially in relation to the federal government's role in licensing and regulation. How did technological change, corporate interest, and political pressures bring about the world that station owners work within today (and that tuned-in consumers make profitable)? In Radio and Television Regulation, Hugh R. Slotten examines the choices that confronted federal agencies--first the Department of Commerce, then the Federal Radio Commission in 1927, and seven years later the Federal Communications Commission--and shows the impact of their decisions on developing technologies.
Slotten analyzes the policy debates that emerged when the public implications of AM and FM radio and black-and-white and color television first became apparent. His discussion of the early years of radio examines powerful personalities--including navy secretary Josephus Daniels and commerce secretary Herbert Hoover--who maneuvered for government control of "the wireless." He then considers fierce competition among companies such as Westinghouse, GE, and RCA, which quickly grasped the commercial promise of radio and later of television and struggled for technological edge and market advantage. Analyzing the complex interplay of the factors forming public policy for radio and television broadcasting, and taking into account the ideological traditions that framed these controversies, Slotten sheds light on the rise of the regulatory state. In an epilogue he discusses his findings in terms of contemporary debates over high-resolution TV.
Customer Reviews:
Concise study of the government and technology.......2001-03-17
Hugh Slotten, a postdoctoral fellow in History at Harvard, has explored the public debates surrounding the adoption of several broadcasting technologies, including AM and FM radio and black-and-white and color television in the U.S. Federal agencies most concerned with their regulation, beginning with the Federal Radio Commission in 1927 and continuing to the Federal Communications Commission of the 1930s to the 1960s. Slotten's book explores the complex relationships between government and industry, the importance of key individuals in the government, and the influence of political ideologies as they related to policy formation at the dawn of broadcasting. Along the way, he reveals much about the creation of the "regulatory state" that that defined the communications industries in the 20th century. The book's chapters are ordered chronologically and treat key episodes in the history of broadcast regulation. Chapter one treats the formative years of the radio industry and the creation of the first federal regulatory agencies, focusing on the role of engineer and future president Herbert Hoover in the process. He then moves on to show how regulation contributed to the stunning commercial success of broadcasting and radio networks, despite the Great Depression. Some readers may be surprised to learn that television was being touted as the "next big thing" even in the 1920s, and Slotten analyzes the way TV regulatory policy emerged well before the technology itself was ready for deployment. The maturation of both the broadcasting industry and the government's regulatory and standards-setting mechanisms is detailed in a chapter on the introduction of FM broadcasting, along with an in-depth analysis of the role of technical knowledge and expertise in the policy process. By the time television re-emerged after being delayed by the Depression and World War II, the FCC had grown aware that the technical expertise needed to make informed regulatory decisions often relied on uncertain, incomplete or highly biased knowledge. This, and the fact that the agency was now less likely than ever to make decisions that would threaten entrenched commercial interests, led them to delay the introduction of UHF television, limiting its success as a competitor to VHF (channels 2-13). By about 1950, the FCC had hired its own technical expertise, and was less likely to rely on the opinions of (presumably biased) industry personnel. This was a key factor in the decision to reverse an early ruling that promoted the color TV system invented at CBS, which used a large, rotating disk fitted with optical filters to create the illusion of color. The FCC now pushed for a color standard that was more in keeping with its new face; a standard that protected entrenched interests in the black-and-white TV field (the new color standard was backward-compatible with black-and-white) while promoting what was seen as the next logical step in TV technology. The resulting color standard, while criticized today as obsolete, nonetheless stood the test of time for half a century. Slotten's work is a well-researched yet brief survey of a complex subject, and it should be closely read by those interested in the ways that federal agencies simultaneously nurture and reign in new communications technologies.
