Book Description

This popular new line of books follows your favorite Queer as Folk characters on a riveting journey of sexual self-discovery with stories about the beloved characters from the record-breaking Showtime series. USA Today raves, "There's never been anything else like it on TV" -- and there's never been a book series like this. Life after college brings a lot more freedom -- and a lot of new problems. Brian must trade his status as BMOC for the bottom rung of the corporate ladder, while Michael, who has long given up on college, now wonders if he's also given up on his dreams. Emmett visits Pittsburgh to celebrate the spectacular launch of his fashion marketing company in Los Angeles (or so everyone thinks), while Deb adds gay rights advocacy to her juggling act of working at the diner and taking care of her ailing brother, Vic. Like Lindsay -- who experiences life as a struggling artist and true love for the first time -- Deb's about to get more than she bargained for. Add in a secret romance, sexually charged office politics, an over-the-top drag ball, and the arrival of new friends and lovers, and our little gang is tested enough to qualify for postgraduate credit. More than ever before, Michael and Brian find their friendship challenged. As their choices tear them apart, Brian sees that it's Michael he's always loved, and that he always will. But will he tell him before it's too late?

4 out of 5 stars Queer as Folk Prequel.......2007-05-12

If you loved the Showtime series "Queer as Folk," you will enjoy this fun, albeit sophomoric, first-volume prequel to discover how Brian and Mikey became the Dynamic Duo! Emmett and other characters are introduced in the next volume, "Never Tear Us Apart." -- Huge QAF Fan --

4 out of 5 stars Best of the three, but that ain't saying much!.......2005-08-11

I have read all 3 of the QAF novels, and "Always Have, Always Will" is the best of the three. Sadly, that isn't saying much. "QAF" is, above all, a highly visual show. Absent its good looking cast, thumpa thumpa soundtrack, and witty one liners there isn't much to go on.

However, this one works because, at last, the gang (sans Justin) is together. Melanie and Ted are introduced as college friends who meet the rest of the gang at Woody's. Melanie is soon smitten with Lindsay, and Ted with Michael, so the gang of six is formed. Various plots ensue. The best are Emmett's comical foray into the workworld and Mel and Lindz's romance. The author is good at setting the scene in Pittsburgh, although this is ironic since the show itself doesn't do a very good job of disguising Toronto (where it's filmed) for Pittsburgh.

There are a few continuity errors. Fans of the show know that Ted has an MBA from Wharton, in Philadelphia, not the University of Pittsburgh, so he wouldn't have been around at this time. Also, Mel and Lindz are established on the show as friends who became lovers, but "AHAW" introduces them as love interests immediately upon meeting. Emmett, on the show, has said that he left Hazelhurst but only got as far as Pittsburgh. In this, we're supposed to believe he lived in LA for two years. All of this makes me wonder who is editing these books.

All in all, I enjoyed "Always Have, Always Will." I think this ends the series and that is a good thing. Unlike the show, which I could watch forever, I have grown tired of this enterprise.

1 out of 5 stars Where's the Love?.......2005-07-28

"Always Have, Always Will," seems like a factory product. Is the writer, Quinn Brockton, the brother of Joseph Brockton, the writer of a previous Queer as Folk book? Or was it the company behind the series deciding they didn't like Joseph as a ghost writer name, and just altered it, because Brockton was too good to lose?

The writer's voice is as generic as his name. The tone is intelligent but flat. There's little changes in mood regardless of what happens. As pointed out by another reviewer, there are spelling mistakes, the most intrusive being Brian repeatedly named Brain.

The television show is for adults. Not only because of its sexual content - part of the point, for the writers of the series - but because the characters are forced to make the kind of decisions that adults make. I missed that totally here.

The humour, too, is ridiculously overplayed. Emmett, maybe the liveliest character, is given, finally, a half-decent comic scene to play, a scene ruined by cheap, badly performed narrative tricks. The worst is the fact that he sells a product called Fold-N-Serve, a name the writer can't resist repeating until he's sure we get how witty he is. Yes - life, just like Emmett, is whimsically campy.

Maybe not every book has to be a masterpiece, but the producers of television's Queer as Folk have gone a long way to describe their work as having positive social ramifications, along with moments of lightness, heartbreak and real joy. Though I was at first skeptical of such obvious self-congratulation, the show itself converted me, not least by the conviction of the actors to the crises and celebrations of the characters, the always-improving writing, and the support of long-time gay, Canadian playwright Brad Fraser.

This book sacrifices it all except for the name. What a waste.

5 out of 5 stars the fabulous liberty ave. gang.......2004-06-25

(...)P>this book was great. read it. along with the two before it.
i wish their were more of these.

someone said that this book is three years before the series, but why is Justin in fifth grade, he wasn't in eighth grade in episode one??

this isn't meant to be a great review, but if I have time, I'll make it one.

4 out of 5 stars Further Adventures of the Liberty Avenue Gang.......2004-06-16

.
As you might be able to tell from some of my other reviews - I'm a big Queer As Folk fan. I enjoy the show and its characters, its depiction of gay life and the gay community.

It should therefore be no surprise that I was happy when it was announced that there would be a series of books based on Queer As Folk. This bok is the third in that series of novels. "Every Nine Seconds" being the first and "Never Tear Us Apart" being the second (you can read my reviews of those books here at amazon).

As with the previous novels, I enjoyed this story and plot. Its not a difficult read and the author again succeeds in capturing the "voices" of most of the shows defined characters (In this novel, we are introduced to Melanie and Ted, rounding out the gang as we first met them in Season One of QAF).

The best part of reading this book, again as with the others, is that the story incorporates existing storylines of the television series, referencing events and foreshadowing character development. This gives the reader a bit of the "We're In On It" feel. I like that.

This book begins with a bit of a time gap jump. "Never Tear Us Apart" is now three years in the past. Thats a pretty big jump and honestly I wish they'd have taken some time to delve into the issues that had to have happened in that span. For one thing, Michael has dropped out of college and little attention is paid to very monumental event in his life.

We begin this novel at Brian's college graduation, with our hero about to begin his career life in the big bad world of advertising. Michael is working at the Big Q, and Debbie is helping Uncle Vic with his health issues. Emmett is back, as well as is Lindsay (for those looking or waiting for the big sex scene with Brian and Lindsay, we are spared).

The introduction of Melanie and Ted doesn't seem as "easy" as the introduction of other characters in the previous novels, and we're asked to rely on what we know of their characters from the show a great deal.

As presented here - Ted is the shy puppy dog and Melanie, well, I'm rather disappointed in her portrayal here. She's uncharacteristically boring.

My main problem with this novel is that the author hasn't seemed to capture Melanie and Lindsay as we know them. The others are very well defined and you can easily make the connection from these early years to the people they've become on the television show - this is not true of Mel and Lindz. Shout-outs to Michelle Clunie and Thea Gill for taking their characters on the show to a higher plane with not much screen time, but unfortunately their acting talent is not visible here. Make no mistake though, it's the actresses, and our knowledge of them, that is the only thing that works in this book with regards to their "characters".

Ted has come a long way on the show, and this is him in a very immature place in his life. He's an interesting character and is introduced here via Melanie. We are persented with his early infatuation with Michael (remember season one?) and it is accurate and on the money. I'm interested in seeing him progress in the novels to the character we know now.

Emmett's storyline here is sort of out of the blue. He's returned from Los Angeles with worries and secrets of his own.

Brian, perhaps the most complex Queer As Folk character, is written very well.

All in all, the story and the characters are what we are here for and this book delivers for the most part (4 stars only because of my disappointment in girlz story/characters).

This book is fun to read. It's a great beach book, easy to pick up and fall right into.

I recommend this book, as I do the first two novels, as a fun and easy read for the Queer As Folk fan. Its entertaining and thats what counts.

If you're a fan, you'll like the book. Thats basically what it comes down to.

            Product Description

Most people develop their sense of self-worth from what they accomplish in life. As time goes by though, the confident and blissful feeling eventually weakens and fades. For the self-worth that sustains the ever-changing ebb and flow of life it must be based on the sacredness that is found at the core of every soul - within the miracle of life itself. As David Walker writes, "If we don't accept the fact that what we ARE is more important than what we DO, we will live a lifetime with the self-inflicted pressure to preform."

Get ready to read some down-to-earth straight talk written by a man who has been teaching this life-changing philosophy for over 30 years and helping people to break out of the self-restricting thought patterns that hold them back. With this book you'll find that the foundation for a strong and long-lasting self-worth is already set in place, prepared and waiting to carry you through any challenge simply by becoming aware that "you are enough" . . . always have been, always will be.

5 out of 5 stars An upbeat, turn-yourself-around guide especially valuable for anyone vulnerable to negative thinking........2007-09-02

You Are Enough: Always Have Been... Always Will Be is a compendium of life-changing wisdom from David J. Walker, who has been teaching and helping people overcome their own harmful inhibitions for over 30 years. Chapters discuss how to use positive self-talk to bolster one's confidence, how to break out of the destructive cycle of self-restricting thought patterns, and much more. You Are Enough further embraces a humanistic spirituality, that does not rely upon specific religious beliefs but rather an understanding that the spark of the divine lies within every individual. "The way we think about money, for instance, determines our experience of money. If we believe that money is the root of all evil, at some level we'll be pushing money away from us. Dr. Raymond Charles Barker tells us that 'money is God in action,' which means that the amount of money we have is the 'inevitable consequence' of using the inner Life Force at the level of having that amount." An upbeat, turn-yourself-around guide especially valuable for anyone vulnerable to negative thinking.

I am taking a class called Self-Mastery and this book was a great help
to me to explore myself. When I changed the title from You to I this
became very powerful. To get to know oneself, one must talk to the self
and find out just who you are. I am finding out more about myself is coming
out each day. The book helped me to accept the fact that no matter
what stage I am in, I am Enough now and always will be. This also helps
a student on the spiritual path to believe the positive affirmations that
one makes for themselves. It is also wonderful to know that others
talk to themselves and are writing books about it. The book was easy reading
and a real delight. Although, I loved the self talk or affirmations
in the book, I still think the affirmations must come from you...

5 out of 5 stars Enough is More Than Enough.......2007-08-16

Dr. Walker speaks clearly and candidly how perfect you already are on every page. He creatively shares part of himself on his path to learning that he is enough. You feel as though he is talking about you or someone you once knew. You knew early on in the reading that you were on an adventure well worth taking. The affirmations at the end of each chapter gives you some thought provoking ideas to ponder and kept reminding me throughout the book that I was enough. It also served as a guide to right thinking about your worth. I hope there is more to come from Dr. Walker. As usual you get to enjoy Dr. Walker's humor too. Don't pass up this heartwarming and enlightening book. I didn't want it to end.

5 out of 5 stars The key to happiness and success.......2007-05-07

"You are enough" is the perfect book to remind us of the truth of who we are. It is easy to read and understand while having great insight and wisdom. If you ever wondered how to be happier or more successful, then this book is for you. Get two--it is the ideal gift.

This book is a great and easy read for the economics student. It helps to give a modern view of some issues today in microeconomics and applies the fundamentals taught in most economics courses.

This is a must have for singers looking for something different. The words and music are so moving in this musical - there is something in Closer Than Ever for all musical theatre fans!

                            5 out of 5 stars Unfairly Neglected.......2002-10-30

I just finished performing in a run of this show at Univ of MD and I can honestly say that I'm in love with this show. Musically and lyrically, it was written with such honesty and truthfulness -- none of that flambouyent loudness and sillyness associated with other musicals, just the truth. The music and words work so well together! All of the songs are wonderful expressions of situations that can happen in anyone's life. "One of the Good Guys" and "Life Story" are examples of that fact. Also, Shire notates the notes to the words so well. Shire and Maltby's sound partnership is very evident. This makes for a easy interpretation by the performer, such as in "What am I Doin'?" how the higher notes are used in points of emotional elevation. But that's how it is with all the songs. So simple but yet, you can tell, the intricities were carefully and delicately thought out.

What I just can't express is how real and honest the songs are. This is the best example to show of a musical. What's a shame is how unknown and unpopular this musical is. No one seems to understand and find a way to unlock the realness of this unfairly neglected piece of American repertoire. It needs to be introduced to the mainstream audience.

Well, at least I can tell you. But you must spread this to the world. Tell your friends, relatives, tell all! Do not let this sink into the musical land of the unknown.

3 out of 5 stars Contrived, but fun nonetheless.......2002-10-28

The score to a reveiw by the almost infamous duo of Maltby and Shire, Closer than Ever contains some memorable songs on an extremely vague topic, using "doors" as a metaphor for choices and chances one must face in life. This metaphor expounds itself into a wide array of songs on everything from a father having his first child to the history of Muzak. This review is a little more enjoyable than the trite "starting here, starting now" by the same authors. However, be advised that Maltby and Shire have the almost impressive ability to say nothing with so many words. Still, the music is both enjoyable and entertaining. Maltby and Shire began the review when a song from their musical "Baby" was cut from the show. They began to throw in other random songs into what they called their "urban file" until they were asked to put up a small cabaret in 1987. "Closer Than Ever" was the result.
This is the complete score to the show. It contains all of the vocal harmonies and counterpoint that each of the 4 performers are supposed to sing in the show, as well as the piano accompaniment. In response to the last review, a Vocal Score is literally a piano reduction of the music used in an actual performance of a show with complete dance music, scene change music, etc. They are usually a bit pricey. Vocal Selections are usually a simplified piano reduction with (sometimes) both melody and chord symbols written in. In the hands of a good pianist, either will suffice for a recital performance or otherwise.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music. Great Audition Material.......2000-02-09

This musical is one of the best I've heard. The music is writen EXACTLY how it is played in the original cast. I HATE when the music is written with the melody line played. Let the vocalist sing it's part and the piano play it's part. Thankfully, this book is like that. There is no plot to the entire peice. Each song tells it's own story. It is great for auditions. It is modern enough for the newer musicl theatre auditions, yet some of the songs are old style for the older musical auditions. In short (yeah right) it's a great book.

This book is too funny. You don't have to be a social terrorist or a cigar smoker to laugh your head off as you read about Jack's adventures.

                            5 out of 5 stars Extremely Funny!.......2000-07-14

I finished reading "Politically Correct Cigar Smoking for Social Terrorists" late last night. I have to say it's one of the most enjoyable reads I've had in a long while! Who would think that a book about Cigars would be so entertaining? There were many funny moments that I'm sure had my children wondering what their mother was doing at 2 a.m. to cause her to laugh like a maniac! My favorite chapters were "The Ant and the Grasshopper Revisited" and "The Princess and the Cigar ...An Irish Legend" I laughed so hard at those, I nearly fell off the bed! I hope there will be more from this talented writer soon!

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful blow against the pinched-souled PC puritans.......2000-06-26

If you are as fed up with the "political correct" stuff as so many real Americans are; if you are sick of Bill, Hillary, Janet Reno and their kind; and if you long to twist their liberalist dictatorial Puritan tails and thumb your noses at them.......this book if for you! It is hilarious, a wonderful read, and a joy to every true American sick of all the PC garbage strewn around the United States since January 1993.

                            5 out of 5 stars Jack Riepe - A Very Funny Man.......2000-05-27

There aren't many books that make me laugh out loud as I read, but this one did it repeatedly. I think that anyone, absolutely anyone, would enjoy this book. It's not as much about cigar smoking as it is about Riepe's tremendously funny view of the world, and the ills contained therein.

                            5 out of 5 stars Outrageously funny!.......1999-11-13

This is THE book for those who've ever harbored the urge to hunt down political correctness and stomp it out like a spent cigar butt. Jack Riepe has written what few would dare--in a way that left me laughing and thinking. I'm neither a cigar smoker nor a social terrorist, but as Riepe wields humor's universal language, commenting on everything from love to politics, he laughs easily at himself--and I laughed along with him. Warm, funny, and full of foibles. Don't miss my personal favorite, "The 200th Cigar," just the kind of tale that makes you want to read aloud to those around you. A great book to share.

4 out of 5 stars way better than "mastering frontpage 2003 CD-Rom".......2005-10-31

After buying and struggling thru "mastering frontpage 2003" tutorial cd-rom that I bought on ebay, this book was a much better teaching tool. The mastering frontpage cd-rom's tutorials lead to nothing but dead-ends by following their directions step by step. And there would be no "why?" to go with each step, so I wasn't learning much except how to be frustrated! So I picked up this book and each chapter built on the last one. Most of the technical jargon was explained pretty well. As of today, I'm on chapter 20 (of 24). Lots of info to absorb, so I might work my way thru the book a second time, or might go to some of the books' suggested on-line references listed in the Appendice to continue my frontpage education. Looking forward to making my own effective website(s) that I'll have total control over. This book also explains that you'll need to shop for a webserver that offers "frontpage server extensions" and other features so all the frontpage features will actually work when your website customers get to your website.
