Book Description

Best Lesbian Erotica, winner of the Lambda Literary Award for Erotica in 2003 and 2004, celebrates its tenth anniversary with 21 new stories of hot lesbian sex: sensual, inventive, and breathtaking. In Elaine Miller’s “Fee Fie Foe Femme,” a girly-girl reaps a sweet punishment for refusing to mess up her raspberry pink lipstick. In Madeleine Oh’s “Our Women Know What to Do,” a woman hoping to please her Turkish boyfriend ends up being pleased by Turkish women instead. And in Peggy Munson’s “Fairgrounds,” a handsome dyke daddy sells her sweetie to the carnies for a night.

1 out of 5 stars Title Ruins It For Me.......2005-02-16

No doubt I'll be lambasted for lack of political correctness, but I'd probably like this anthology better if the word "lesbian" wasn't in the title!

I didn't find a single story that reflected sex the way I've enjoyed it with women throughout my life and I've tried a lot a wide-ranging things - and liked most of it, too. I think that in order to be deemed "cutting edge" this series has gotten so far away from the way *most* lesbians experience their lesbianism that it bears no real reflection of anything but bizarre and isolated sexual kink. If one - or both! - of the people in the scene do not identify as lesbian, how is the sex "lesbian"? I have to assume that the inclusion of such stories under the label "best lesbian" means the editors think these are lesbian sex acts.

I beg to differ. For example, ask any sex worker who identifies lesbian - sex with a male customer isn't lesbian sex. I also know many butches who don't recoil in shock and horror if a femme reaches down their pants wanting to touch female flesh.

And this is the "best" such talented writers have to offer as insight into lesbian sex in the year 2005? What's with the men, and the straight women, the lack of clear consent, and the endless, endless, endless genderbending and calling it "best lesbian" sex acts? There are stories with "lesbians" yearning to be and acting so much like men that the sex is het! That's simply not what I want in an anthology of "best lesbian" sex.

I thought last year's anthology was as far as they could go labeling the contents "lesbian" but this year went way over the line that works for me. I'll be looking elsewhere from now on for reflections of what I (and I know I'm not alone) call "best lesbian sex."

Fall in love again... will you?
I just love this years collection. Just the right mix to fit any mood.
If you are closed minded then don't buy it.
I especially loved Pointed as well as Rachel Kramer Bussel's piece about breaking up with an ex (sounds odd for an erotic anthology but read it and you will COMPLETELY get me here). Oh, I wish I could say more but my browser keeps crashing!
It was just nominated for a lambda literary award for the third year in a row...

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2004-12-30

I can only recommend this book to people who are very into butch/femme roles or genderf**king in general.
I appreciate that the editor is trying to appeal to a wide audience, but in doing so, she loses her mainstream readers.
I'm not conservative about sex, but I also have no desire to read a story about a woman who prostitutes her girlfriend out to a male biker or a butch who has borderline nonconsensual sex with a hooker. If that's your thing, then you'll love this book.

5 out of 5 stars An Unapologetic Odyssey into the Splendor of Lesbian Sex.......2004-12-28

From the first story to the last, this collection grabs you by your gonads and won't let go. If you are repressed or inhibited and in search of something to make you set yourself loose, this book is an express train to libido-ville. If you are a prude and happily wed to your vanilla fondlings on crisp linens, this book is for you too-it will repulse you and ignite you at the same time or at a minimum give you something to be substantially angry about. If you are already uninhibited and proud of the way your desire rules you, this book will reaffirm that you are on the right track. Within these pages, classic lesbian stereotypes get celebrated, blown apart and put back together again in a brand new way. Butches flaunt their penis envy, bask in their ability to woo the girly girls or subdue the bois and, take ownership of their desire to submit when they choose to. Femmes rise with formidable power above the superficiality of their lipstick and stilettos to leave us breathless and aching. 26 stories. 26 unique, unfaltering voices. 26 opportunities to discover a new kink. 26 ways to recover what you may have lost. 26 chances to validate that part of yourself you keep denying. I have read every edition of this series. This is, bar none, the best. READ IT!

" Full of literary star power and with absolutely nothing out of bounds, these steamy short stories pack a wallop for every sexual taste. Susie Bright is the fearless boundary crosser of contemporary erotica, and The Best American Erotica 2005 features stories of unprecedented literary pedigree and a stunning breadth of imagination. Pulitzer Prize-winner Jane Smiley details a beautiful erotic interlude in an otherwise sordid real estate deal; Mary Gaitskill celebrates the unexpected ardor of one middle-aged couple; Steve Almond reminisces about the best one-man/three-girl Ecstasy party ever; Nelson George recounts the erotic escapades that befall a young man who accompanies a celebrity athlete when he picks up a gaggle of girls; and Carol Queen explores the joys of making love with summer fruit. Readers will also thrill to the year's most stellar stories from every imaginable erotic genre. The class of The Best American Erotica 2005 is changing the rules about writing about sex. It's no longer pulp fiction: it's must-read literature showcasing the best writing around, all packed into the year's sexiest anthology. "

4 out of 5 stars A little something for just about anyone........2006-02-25

Let's start by saying tastes in erotica vary. This collection has a little something for everyone. The stories are more consistently sensual than erotic per say. While some of the story lines did nothing for me there are a number of gems here that make the collection well worth the read.

2 out of 5 stars Generally unsatisfying..........2005-11-27

Of course I recognize that a sense of the erotic is a very individual taste. However, when an anthology self asserts that it is the "best" American erotica then delivers like this, I find myself longing to shop in Europe.

I'll acknowledge these short vignettes are masterfully written...murals of metaphor and simile. But one expects that erotica would appeal to more than one's appreciation of literature. One expects that erotica would stir regions a bit farther below one's cerebral cortex.

I find little of that here. Many of the stories are poignant clips of human interaction with precious little erotica to be found. Generally good short stories with a bit more nudity and profanity than one might encounter at the public library.

These stories often succeed in stirring emotion if not the libido. I find I am repulsed by the celebration of just how base human nature can be portrayed. It's as if Ms Bright's idea of the erotic is directly linked to the degree of perversity, pain, and meanness illustrated. For example, there is one story that illustrates the destruction of a man and his family at the hands of a narcissistic drug addict. Please explain how this sad story is considered erotica?

At first, I believed my disappointment was rooted in my "maleness"...that perhaps these stories were written to appeal to women. My wife has also read them. She thinks it's more like watching the freak show at the circus...plenty to gawk at, but nothing you'd want to touch.

I've seen this general trend in erotica in other anthologies as well. If this is the direction it is headed, then perhaps we just need to start renaming the series "The Best Short Stories with Naked Bodies and Profanity"

1 out of 5 stars Boring.......2005-10-19

I found this book to be very boring. Not what I would call erotica at all. I will not waste my money on another of the series

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as 2000.......2005-09-21

I received the 2000 edition from a friend and I thought it was a bit over the top. Then I decided to buy this one and I was very disappointed. It was boring.

5 out of 5 stars Awesomely erotic.......2005-07-24

I've read the stories and loved them all, but my favorite one is,
"It's never too late in New York," by, Nelson George.
I don't want to explain too much, it's such a short story; I might tell it all in one paragraph. But I will say, I was excited to see slang writing, quoted for the characters.
This was an urban story, African-American based.
This story and all the others were engaging. In the story, I liked the character, Walter's personality. He had a sexy way about him. Walter mentioned to his friend Dwayne, about a girl whose nickname was Medina, a stripper he met in a club. Dwayne reminded Walter both he and him went to the movies with Medina together, in the past; he also reminded Walter of her real name. Dispite Dwayne's jealously towards Walter, in dating Medina, Walter remained cool about it all.
Throughout the whole book, these hot, erotic stories were really worth reading.
I recommend it.

    Book Description

The miners' strike against Pittston Coal in 1989--1990, which spread throughout southwestern Virginia, southern West Virginia, and eastern Kentucky, was one of the most important strikes in the history of American labor, and, as Richard Brisbin observes, "one of the longest and largest incidents of civil disorder and civil disobedience in the United States in the second half of the twentieth century." The company aggressively sought to break the strike, and workers and their families used a variety of tactics -- lawful and unlawful -- to resist Pittston's efforts as the situation quickly turned ugly.

In A Strike like No Other Strike: Law and Resistance during the Pittston Coal Strike of 1989--1990, Richard Brisbin offers a compelling study of the exercise of political power. In considering the legal significance of the strike, Brisbin asks the larger question of whether even extreme transgression or resistance can fracture the "imagined coherence of the law." He shows how each party in the strike invoked the law to justify its actions while attacking those of the other side as unlawful. In the end, both sides lost; although the U.S. Supreme Court ultimately ruled in favor of the union, most of the strikers faced elimination of their jobs and an ongoing struggle for pensions and health benefits.

Extremely basic text that relies largely on pictures to convey the content. Either an example of the dumbing down of both a complex industry and a complicated subject or the future of technical and professional education. Purchased it to consider using in a class I teach in Casino management at the junior college level--felt it was aimed at too junior an audience.

          Book Description

In this evocative and intensely personal history of the blues, Bill Wyman pays tribute to the musicians who inspired him and whose music he took around the world as a member of the Rolling Stones. The starting point of Bill's Odyssey is the journey of African slaves to the plantations of America's Deep South. We follow their descendants as they walk, travel the highways, and ride the railroads out of the Delta and the troubled South via Memphis to the northern cities of Chicago and St. Louis. But this is no superficial history: Bill Wyman's in-depth odyssey reveals a society where poverty and injustice as well as love and faith, found their expression in a musical style that gave birth to rock 'n' roll. Location shots of smoky juke joints, railroad stations, and endless highways combine with richly detailed maps to bring the Blues alive. Feature spreads with previously unpublished photographs from Bill Wyman's personal archive showcase 40 Blues legends from Robert Johnson to John Lee Hooker, telling the story of their fascinating and often troubled lives. Bill Wyman is a legend in his own right. He has known and played with many of the Blues legends, and his personal knowledge and unprecedented access give this book an authenticity that is almost impossible to match.

          5 out of 5 stars Blues.......2007-02-16

Great book with pictures and portrayals of the great blues players throughout the ages.

          4 out of 5 stars glossy, interesting.......2003-06-22

Overall, a great book that educates the reader in an entertaining, clear and down-to-earth manner. I especially appreciated the background information (for example, on slavery, segregation and the cotton trade) which puts the blues into its social and spiritual context. This book is clearly a labour of love, especially for Bill Wyman, but that love unfortunately extends to an excessive number of Bill Wyman photographs. Bear in mind that as a coffeee table book, this book lacks some of the depth and flow of a good blues read, evident in books such as Robert Palmer's "Deep Blues" or Alan Lomax's "The land where the blues began".

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Pictures, Problematic Prose.......2003-06-13

A coffee table book, pure and simple, with thick, glossy pages full of photos, timelines, and charts. But the prose is the equivalent of a high school term paper--no flow to the paragraphs, themes jumbled and disorganized, little explication or analysis. Sure, it is an encyclopedia of facts, some of them quite interesting, but who wants to read an encyclopedia cover to cover? Apart from the inelegant ghost writing, Wyman's own asides are entirely superfluous. Compare this to Alan Lomax's "The Land Where the Blues Began".

5 out of 5 stars Roots of the Blues and African American History.......2002-06-08

Sure this book is like an encyclopedia, but you won't find a better guide for finding obscure blues artists that otherwise would be forgotten. Most books go into familiar territory and rehash the same old information, but Bill Wyman is a serious collector who wants to share his love of the blues. This book is loaded with enough information to get you started on your own eclectic blues collection.

5 out of 5 stars A Major Masterpiece on the Mojo Music of America!.......2002-05-26

Bill Wyman - of The Rolling Stones, and The Rhythm Kings - has written a major masterpiece on the mojo music of America. This is The Blues. ... There is no other music as deeply authentic and as emotionally gutsy as the blues. It is a music based on a feeling whose archetypal root is grounded in the solitary pain of the existential core of reality: LONELINESS - and the joyous TRANSCENDENCE of that loneliness. ... We all feel pain, and because of this we can all relate to the blues - the loneliness, the pain, the anger, the freedom to rebel from it, and the joy of the thrill and excitement of escaping from this loneliness. ... Only the blues, in its powerful simplicity of delivery, can sincerely convey these emotions to and from the human soul. It is these same emotions which many musicians, including Bill Wyman, have been inspired by to play the blues - and which cause us to RESONATE with the blues we hear being played by our fellow musicians. Non-musicians in touch with these same basic feelings deep in their soul feel the same way when they hear the blues being played. It's like someone is saying, with musical words: "Man, that's EXACTLY how I feel, and how it is!" ... It is THIS spirit of EMPATHY for the blues that is captured in this excellent book by Bill Wyman. ... If you have ever been moved by the blues and want to learn more about it, but don't know where to start, then start with this book! It is well written, has glorious photographs, pays true homage and respect to the musicians who created this musical artform, and contains many personal stories about Bill Wyman's musical journey through life as a blues musician as well. ... I admit: I am an ENTHUSIAST - and I am very enthused about this book because I KNOW that it will inspire ENTHUSIASM for the blues in everyone who reads it. ... BRAHVO, Bill Wyman, on a work well done! ... - The Aeolian Kid

Doctor Who is a science-fiction, cultural phenomenon along with Star Trek. This book shows a fans love for the show and shares it with the rest of us.

Most fan books now (basically books that don't really educate someone not familiar with the show, but have all sorts of trivia of interest for fans) contain episode guides as well as trivia. Each season has a synopsis of the exploits of the doctor. Usually included are the names of the alien/villian involved, and a mention of what happened to the companion(s) of the Doctor. The book doesn't discuss number of episodes of how the episodes broke down, which is disappointing.

There are pictures of scenes from the show, but we don't normally see what episode it's from, and sometimes the caption with the pictures is actually the text from a Doctor Who novelization. In keeping with the novelization scheme, included are many drawings which were jacket art for the novels.

The book doesn't give much background, but there are some newsclippings. This was written before the Ninth Doctor (Eccleston) and Tenth Doctor (Tennant).

If you are a Doctor Who fan, then this book would be of interest.

David J. Howe of the famous Howe-Stammers-Walker team painstakingly compiled this work to correspond to Doctor Who's 30th anniversary.

Basically, each section is divided by season and consists of a very brief summary of the stories within that season. Also included in each section are newsclippings, photo stills from the Who stories, publicity or photo stills of actors, actors in costume, and full page illustrations for the Who novelizations. Allstair Pearson has the lion's share of illustration, and that's because his gouache-style paintings rule. The ones for Earthshock, Remembrance Of The Daleks, Silver Nemesis, and the two Troughton Dalek stories are my favorites. Compare his drawings to those of Chris Achilleos. Oh, and there are funny cartoons and promotional items such as the Sky-Ray popsicles seen in the More Than 30 Years documentary.

But remember, when journeying through the thirty years spanning the show's creation to the first few New Adventures, that we are actually travelling through history, time itself. What is a chronology, if not a time machine in writing? To illustrate, there's a Radio Times programme listing for An Unearthly Child, Who's first story, Jon Pertwee on the cover of the Radio Times, a 1978 news clipping introducing Mary Tamm as Romana, a 1980 press cutting of Tom Baker announcing his resignation as Dr. Who, the March 1987 obituary of Patrick Troughton, and a 6 October 1989 press cutting that hinted (accurately) at the show's departure.

Call this a book version of More Than 30 Years In The TARDIS, Timeframe is essential reading for Who fans.

"Timeframe" excels in that it's packed with hundreds of photos, book covers, and other items of interest (including a picture of the Doctor Who pinball machine!). However, there's really nothing else new in the book, just the same old rehashing of info on the stories that even the casual Who fan should know.
