lots of good stuff, a few problems.......2000-07-26

First the problems. When a scholar uses such a wide range of sources, it is inevidentual that some will be used better than others. I think Cantarella has a good grasp of the legal and epigraphical evidence but her use of literature and plays is more tenuous. Likewise she crosses over from time periods at times, combining Greek sources from a Roman context into her discussion about Greece when they might best be a reflection of a new multiculture world. Finally, I can tell this was done on a computer. Several pages are word for word from her previous book "Pandora's Daughters". Computers are wonderful things but I don't think they should take the place of writing something new. There are several good points about this book. She uses a wide range of sources and attempts to place "reality" apart from "philosophy" a difference often overlooked in scholarship it seems. Her attempt to look at women's bisexuality is good though limited by the sources available. Finally the book is written clearly so that both scholar and non-scholar can appreciate and learn from it.

Not as recent as some might have us believe..........2000-04-26

This is a delightful book that makes a delicious change from the normal books on bisexuality. Full of great stories and a wonderous insight from start to finish, it kept me enthralled until the last page and then made me wish for more. It's rather refreshing to see something that deals with a history of bisexuality, rather than a personal insight. This made it even more of a gem, but in itself it is a must for every bi bookcase.

Hits the Nail On the Head.......2003-10-04

Having been has been involved on both sides of the energy equation exploring for oil, gas and geothermal resources using seismic and magneto-telluric methods and working for the utility industry in coal, natural gas, and nuclear power plants, I can say that Harvey Wasserman has written a book that details exactly how and why we're in the mess we're in.

This book is primer for anyone who wants a breif history of the utility industry. It begs the question of when the public will wake up and take back what corporations have stolen from us.

Interesting but irrelevant.......2002-03-05

An interesting book. Too bad there's not much in here about utility deregulation.

The book is an angry diatribe against various causes that the author hates, including, among others, robber barons, big corporations, corrupt politicians, nuclear power, materialism, the Vietnam War, turncoat environmentalists, and the utility industry. Rather than address these topics in turn, the author attacks each of them in every chapter of the book. The use of various colorful adjectives to describe these evils does little to dull the monotony.

These points might be tolerable if the book actually lived up to its title, but utility deregulation is treated only in the last two chapters, and in a very limited fashion at that. The first of these consists of ten pages about the California deregulation debacle, which even deregulation proponents agree was a terrible mess. The second is a brave statement about how the bad guys won't win, with little explanation for why not.

The book has little in the way of data or supporting evidence for its contentions, particularly with respect to deregulation. We are told the exact number of demonstrators dragged off the site of a protest at a nuclear power plant (1,414), but we are never told the numbers which might show that deregulation will raise the cost to consumers, though we are told that detailed studies have been done demonstrating just this.

The author also does little to present an alternative plan, being far more interested in attacking his opponents. The chapter on solar and wind energy is almost an afterthought, and energy efficiency gets perhaps a paragraph. There is nothing on how a plan using alternative energy systems might be implemented. In contrast, two chapters are dedicated to attacking nuclear power.

In the end, this book is an interesting propaganda pamphlet, but will do little to inform the public about the pros and cons of utility deregulation.

Good alternative view point.......2001-09-09

The author does a good job explaining how the deregulation has allowed the utilities to push the cost of their investment decisions on to their customers and taxpayers. Read it with an open mind and take it as one opinion in the deregulation debate.

Essential background for the mess we're now in.......2001-01-25

I read Harvey's book when it first came out. I'm not an expert on this subject, but the issues he raised in a highly accessable style worried me, although no one was talking about them at the time. Now, they're front page headlines. We think these decisions just happen, then discover when we read a book like this, that they're product of huge political interests, and that we, the ordinary citizens, pay the toll.

A wonderful rallying cry for a more democratic approach to key energy issues.

Good, concise history of electric industry deregulation.......2000-02-17

My only significant criticism of the book is that it is a somewhat one-dimensional assessment of a multifaceted phenomenon. While the issue of restructuring the electric industry is complex, and the economic drivers are deeper than Wasserman details in the book, the book is still an absorbing assessment of the impact that occurred when the electric utility industry embraced commercial nuclear energy. "Too cheap to meter," was the mantra of the 1950's. Well, we all have a basic energy became, in some respects, a tremendous white elephant for the industry and it's regulators. Wasserman opines that the investment required was enormous, and the return has never been completely realized either in economic, social, or environmental benefit.

i was surprised this didn' t get too many reviews...it's quite hysterical! i picked it up @ the bookstore when i was bored, and was laughing my pants off pretty soon. it's really short, it'll take about 15 minutes to breeze through...a nice way to spend 15 minutes, in my opinion. my favorite:

This is an enjoyable flip-through for Jane Austen and Regency lovers, but because the format limits the length of any entry, it is a rather abbreviated overview without a lot of depth. Many of the entries had me yearning for more information, especially those items about social mores, society, relationships within the family, etc.

An Excellent Retelling of Her Life and Times.......2006-08-23

These days many books come along that discuss specific influences on Jane's writing such as poets, other authors, politics and social customs. This book allows a return to the overview of her story. The hard cover book is 8 x 11 in. which makes it easy to be a coffee table presentation or to read in a comfortable upright chair or even in bed (Yes, I do it!) Six well written chapters choronical her life, who she was, what it was like to live in Regency England, the society and spirit of her times, what her country was like, and her influence through the ages especially via her six novels and in the recent movies and television productions. For the old timers who have followed Jane Austen for some time or for the new comers wanting to know more, this is the book for you.

Helped me understand Jane Austen's novels better.......2002-05-24

This is a really great book. I'm a fan of Jane Austen and have read all her novels but there were many things in them that I didn't understand because I didn't know the culture, customs and history of that time. Just one small example--Mr. Darcy hands his letter to Elizabeth Bennett instead of mailing it. Apparently unmarried men and women did not correspond with each other unless they were relatives or engaged to be married. Another example--balls and dances were a primary way for unmarried people to meet and socialize and one of the few ways they could talk alone to each other (while on the dance floor). So the balls/dances in Jane Austen's books are much more significant than I realized.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to understand Jane Austen's novels better.

Worth It!.......2001-10-31

This books is so informative! Easy to read, lots of information about the Georgian and Regency Eras, very informative. It goes into depth about Jane Austen's time and her life. It talks about everything from the Army, to everyday life, to the madness of King George, fashion, etc.. So much info! If you're into history or Jane Austen, you'll like this book.

How Desperate Are You?.......2006-11-15

I was pretty desperate and ordered this, and was very disappointed. There is not much out here at all, so there is no room for comparison. I expected this would talk as much about Word as EndNote to Write the Manuscript. Perhaps how to use templates or something. That I misread. So, given that it basically only talks about CWYW, I wasn't all that impressed. I read a tip about Word, like turn off grammar/spellcheck to keep Word from crashing. Most of what is here is available for free from the Endnote site. There are many more screenshots than photos. I didn't pay attention to the page count of the book and was shocked to receive basically an oversized THIN paperback. I do not like to slam any author. Sorry, but I was very disappointed and expected something about the size of those "dummy" books with as much information.
