This is a gorgeous book........2006-12-31

This book comes in a couple sections. First Loren writes about his personal history and shows photographs he has taken of himself. Some of the most interesting ones are the ones surrounded by things people have said about him, such as "Men are jerks, why would you want to become one?" and "I can't be with you: I'm not a lesbian." There are two sections with photographs of other transmen and their stories, and a section called "emergence" which shows transmen and their "before" pictures. There are also surgery and modification pictures, including two metoidioplasties, a phalloplasty, a set of piercings, and two mastectomies. The last section is Loren and his partner, Kayt, talking about their relationship with photos of them together.

The pictures are very nice, and I feel the writings and the photos are an accurate representation of trans life, especially considering diversity. Doctors, bodybuilders, surfers, an interesting story from a Jewish transman about the Bar Mitzvah, and of various sexual orientations rather than just transmen who love women.

The photography is beautiful, the subject is very well presented and the amount of courage to open up like this is unbelievable.
I would recomend this book to anyone interested in photography and/or transgender issues.

This book was one of the greatest gifts I have ever gotten myself. When I finished reading and looking at the beautiful photographs, I hugged the book to my chest.
This book not only told me thru writings but also showed me that I wasn't alone. This book meant the world to me as a bigendered female. I had only read about others transgender people, but had never seen anyone besides myself.

I recomend this book to anyone dealing with transgender issues- whether they be trans themself, a realtive or friend of a trans person, or just plain curious.

Green with envy.......2002-03-01

I'm a minority. I am very much outside this book's intended audience, to say the least. I am a straight bio-male. And I can say without any homosexual tension, that Mr. Cameron you are built like a god.

The photos border on Arbus-esque but offer a more compassionate less spectacle treatment of the subjects. I guess that's a point well demontsrated when the phographer spends as much time in front of the camera as well as behind. You are more inclined to look at these unusual subjects with reverence not repulsion. The book overall is beautifully put toether. Sparse and poignantly so.

Now the "green with envy" part. Even if Cameron is 5'3", for me to stand next to him would be totally emasculating. There aren't a lot of "real" men out there who are willing to go out to the gym to look that ripped. I feel so flabby.

Interesting Study on an Underappreciated Topic.......2006-08-25

Steven Epstein ventures into uncharted territory here with his book on the crude capitalism of the Middle Ages. The existence of wage labor is often thought to have been a creation or modern capitalism but Epstein proves otherwise. Unlike many historians, Epstein writes very lively prose and paints a vivid picture of the life and struggle of the working class in Medieval Europe. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in labor history.

While education has traditionally been viewed as a catalyst of social transformation, there is now a growing awareness that the vertical expansion and spread of education have actually served to increase the economic distance between divergent groups in society. Sympathetic to the latter view, Education, Development, and Underdevelopment, a volume of original essays, examines the extent to which education has led to domination of many by a few, thereby furthering inequalities and underdevelopment. The contributors explore important facets of the relationship between education, development, and underdevelopment, with a special focus on India. Among the issues discussed are the consequences of colonial policy on education, differential access to and persisting inequalities in education, the paradox of the brain drain, constraints in educating the poor, and the increasing emphasis on privatization in recent times. This paper examines educational linkages to persistent conflicts and contemporary security challenges in Kosovo. It reviews some historic foundations, debates and socioeconomic contexts concerning education as a security issue. It argues that poverty and underdevelopment coupled with failed diplomacy (particularly surrounding a 1996 ''Education Accord'')-with inappropriate militarized responses to disputes amidst broader and chronic lack of attention to education concerns-contributed to human rights abuses, violent civil conflict and a major war in 1999. Without justifying violence on either side, the paper shows how both Albanian and Serbs were both responsible for abuses in different periods while education was a contributing factor. The paper further discusses how education has (problematically) been part of the human security building and ''reconstruction'' process after NATO 1999 while many issues that led to international military intervention remain unresolved some 5 years later. It closes with some reflections on post-war or ''post-conflict'' education dilemmas, cooperation imperatives and new research challenges for Kosovo.

The cult classic TV series is gone but the calendars remain.......2003-09-12

In 2004 the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" calendar is going to have to help tote the weary load and fill the large empty area the late lamented cult television series occupied in our lives. What do we get with the 2004 calendar? Each month offers a medium size studio portrait on top, with a nice arty shape appearing twice off to the side, and a triptich of action shots from various episodes (mostly from the 7th and final season, but from others as well) on the bottom of the page. Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy gets half the months, with one each for Alyson Hannigan's Willow, Nicholas Brandon's Xander, James Marsters as Spike, Michelle Trachtenberg as Dawn, Emma Caulfield's Anya, and then one of the entire group (including Amber Benson as Tara). The calendar part is straightforward, listing just holidays (no birthdays for cast members or fun stuff like that). Final verdict on the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer 2004 12-month Wall Calendar" is that it is okay, and the main photographs are certainly nice and glossy, but the overall effect is nothing special. I got it because this is the calendar that goes up on my wall (in between the Angel calendar and the Spike calendar) so it is definitely going up on the wall on January 1, 2004, but I was hoping for them to come up with something extra special now that the series is no longer in production.
