Book Description

More than 27 million Americans today can trace their lineage to the Scots, whose bloodline was stained by centuries of continuous warfare along the border between England and Scotland, and later in the bitter settlements of England’s Ulster Plantation in Northern Ireland. Between 250,000 and 400,000 Scots-Irish migrated to America in the eighteenth century, traveling in groups of families and bringing with them not only long experience as rebels and outcasts but also unparalleled skills as frontiersmen and guerrilla fighters. Their cultural identity reflected acute individualism, dislike of aristocracy and a military tradition, and, over time, the Scots-Irish defined the attitudes and values of the military, of working class America, and even of the peculiarly populist form of American democracy itself.

Born Fighting is the first book to chronicle the full journey of this remarkable cultural group, and the profound, but unrecognized, role it has played in the shaping of America. Written with the storytelling verve that has earned his works such acclaim as “captivating . . . unforgettable” (the Wall Street Journal on Lost Soliders), Scots-Irishman James Webb, Vietnam combat veteran and former Naval Secretary, traces the history of his people, beginning nearly two thousand years ago at Hadrian’s Wall, when the nation of Scotland was formed north of the Wall through armed conflict in contrast to England’s formation to the south through commerce and trade. Webb recounts the Scots’ odyssey—their clashes with the English in Scotland and then in Ulster, their retreat from one war-ravaged land to another. Through engrossing chronicles of the challenges the Scots-Irish faced, Webb vividly portrays how they developed the qualities that helped settle the American frontier and define the American character.

Born Fighting shows that the Scots-Irish were 40 percent of the Revolutionary War army; they included the pioneers Daniel Boone, Lewis and Clark, Davy Crockett, and Sam Houston; they were the writers Edgar Allan Poe and Mark Twain; and they have given America numerous great military leaders, including Stonewall Jackson, Ulysses S. Grant, Audie Murphy, and George S. Patton, as well as most of the soldiers of the Confederacy (only 5 percent of whom owned slaves, and who fought against what they viewed as an invading army). It illustrates how the Scots-Irish redefined American politics, creating the populist movement and giving the country a dozen presidents, including Andrew Jackson, Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Ronald Reagan, and Bill Clinton. And it explores how the Scots-Irish culture of isolation, hard luck, stubbornness, and mistrust of the nation’s elite formed and still dominates blue-collar America, the military services, the Bible Belt, and country music.

Both a distinguished work of cultural history and a human drama that speaks straight to the heart of contemporary America, Born Fighting reintroduces America to its most powerful, patriotic, and individualistic cultural group—one too often ignored or taken for granted.

"it will go a long way in exposing the first and apparently last socially acceptable prejudice in America: that against the working class southerner." (from another review)

I've read many books about the South looking to find out why people who were no better off than most blacks and who share the much of the same culture, were so racist. This book answered my questions!

I didn't know anything about the Scots-Irish culture and especially didn't know that I probably am one. My father's family lived in the Tennessee mountains and then the mountains of Northeastern Alabama. No wonder my heart skips a beat when I hear Blue Grass music!

Riveting.... thank you James Webb for giving a voice to these folks!

5 out of 5 stars Never bend a knee to Rome........2007-09-29

This was a well written and thought provoking book. I can see how some of the ideas put forward can be misconstrued do to the nature of the subjects but find myself agreeing with most of them. Mr. Webb has shed light on some very interesting topics. I am not a Scots-Irish historian so I enjoyed the history that this book offered. In the end this book has done a good service to one of the immigrant groups that built and fought for this great nation.

5 out of 5 stars SuperTerrificWonderful.......2007-08-10

Webb does a phenomenal job weaving the various economic, political, and religious threads together to create a vivid tapestry depicting the origin and impact of the Scots-Irish. Well-written and riveting. My only criticism is that the author never acknowledged my request to have him autograph my copy (I even offered to deliver it to his office in D.C.!).

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Reading.......2007-05-13

This is a book that you savour by slow reading. It is enjoyable histore particularly for a Scot or Irish man.

4 out of 5 stars How the Rednecks Saved the World!.......2007-03-28

If James Webb's "Born Fighting" gets the reception it deserves, it will go a long way in exposing the first and apparently last socially acceptable prejudice in America: that against the working class southerner. Webb's book explodes the stereotypes attached to this people, demonstrating a depth of cultural character running much deeper than the traditional portrayals of them as stubbornly ignorant, lazy, beer guzzlers living in trailer parks.

Webb recounts the fascinating history of the Scots-Irish, beginning with the Scottish resistance to the Roman Empire itself, moving on to William Wallace and Robert the Bruce and the Scottish was for independence from the new Rome of England. He gives us the high drama of the creation of the distinctively Scots-Irish character when the English crown settled the first Scots in Ireland. With the Scots-Irish as their vanguard, the English were able to hold Ireland against other European powers (and, unfortunately, against the Irish themselves). England thanked the Scots-Irish by outlawing their Presbyterian religion in much the same way they had done the Catholicism of the Irish several years before. And so the Scots-Irish packed their bags and headed to America.

We should gain a newfound respect for these people from Webb's recouting of how they opened the American frontier, acting as a collective picket line against Indian attacks on the more settled English colonists in the coastal areas, and the important and unexpected roles they played in the southern Revolutionary War in the battles of King's Mountain and Cowpens.

Unfortunately, after the Revolutionary War, Webb's book loses a bit of its steam. Much of the drama and portraits of singular individuals we get in the earlier chapters gives way to talk of general social trends. Webb is still informative. Without for a moment excusing slavery or prejudice, Webb gives us an unexpected and perhaps uncomfortable view of just what problems the south had with the north, and how the southern working class was systematically oppressed by southern large land owners and northern merchants and industrial barons. Webb gives us surprising statistics on how much of our armed forces in the World Wars and Viet Nam were supplied by the Scots-Irish. And he reminds us that the closest thing we have to a national muscial genre -- country western -- is basically Scots-Irish music. Neverthess, the most interesting parts of "How the Scots-Irish Shaped America" end with America only on the verge of becoming a nation.

There are a few other problems too. While the old line WASP establishment and the new PC media establishment have both unjustifiably despised the Scots-Irish, Webb celebrates aspects of their character that have made them their own worst enemies time and again -- their "sensuality", their constant competitiveness in all athletics and all things physical, their hard drinking. The fact is that that sensuality has broken many hearts and busted many lives, the athleticism has led to alot of children to waste time and energy they could have spent on bettering their situation in life, and the drinking ... well, that speaks for itself. Also, the later chapters are chock full of stories from Webb's own ancestry. Fascintating characters in their own right to be sure, but the number of these stories comes close to making the second half of the book more of a James Webb memoir and less of a work on how an entire people shaped an entire nation. And toward the end of the book, Webb gets on a bit of a political rant that, though I agree with in many points, makes this book sound like the first step in his campaign for the Virginia Senate seat.

So "Born Fighting" is probably seen better as a corrective to WASP and PC prejudice against the Scots-Irish than as the final word on who the Scots-Irish are and what they should be. And a corrective is certainly needed. After reading "Born Fighting", it occurred to me that no one, as far as I can tell, has ever written at length specifically on the Scots-Irish as a distinct people -- no one, either to champion them or to cast WASP/PC aspersions on them. And where the Scots-Irish have gained scholarly or media attention, it has often been from pseudointellectuals such as H.L. Mencken (at whom Webb directs a few broadsides) bent on showing them in the worst light possible. One manifestation of this prejudice is that "Born Fighting" is bound to -- indeed it actually has now been -- characterized as racist. Such accusations are utter nonsense. One of Webb's heroes, in fact, is his own grandfather who suffered tremendously under white southern landowners for alerting the African Americans of his community to the inequities they were suffering at the landowners' hands. But in the minds of many these days, being fair-minded just isn't enough to escape the racist epithet.

"Born Fighting" doesn't quite deserve to be the last word on America's Scots-Irish. But it seems to be close to the first word, and a well-spoken one at that, on a people who have perhaps shaped the American character more than any other.

      Book Description

Focusing on Alabama's textile industry, this study looks at the complex motivations behind the "whites-only" route taken by the Progressive reform movement in the South. In the early 1900s, northern mill owners seeking cheaper labor and fewer regulations found the South's doors wide open. Children then comprised over 22 percent of the southern textile labor force, compared to 6 percent in New England. Shelley Sallee explains how northern and southern Progressives, who formed a transregional alliance to nudge the South toward minimal child welfare standards, had to mold their strategies around the racial and societal preoccupations of a crucial ally-white middle-class southerners.

Southern whites of the "better sort" often regarded white mill workers as something of a race unto themselves--degenerate and just above blacks in station. To enlist white middle-class support, says Sallee, reformers had to address concerns about social chaos fueled by northern interference, the empowerment of "white trash," or the alliance of poor whites and blacks. The answer was to couch reform in terms of white racial uplift--and to persuade the white middle class that to demean white children through factory work was to undermine "whiteness" generally.

Sallee discusses how the child-labor problem was tackled by southern middle-class whites within their own prevailing ideas about race, family, and gender. This approach discounted many of organized labor's concerns about safety, fair wages and hours, and workers' rights, Sallee says. Although it did create an entrée for women to participate in the public sphere, the lingering effect of a "whites-only" strategy was to reinforce the idea of whiteness as essential to American identity and the politics of reform. This study will enrich our interpretation of reform, racism, and political compromise in the Progressive-era South.

Equal in depth and description to Jacob Riis' "How the Other Half Lives", Ms. Sallee's new book gets at the heart of an issue that troubles many of us today in this modern age. Hopefully, this won't be the last we hear from Ms. Sallee.

                  Book Description

In early 1920 in Hawaii, Japanese sugar cane workers, faced with spiraling living expenses, defiantly struck for a wage increase to $1.25 per day. The event shook the traditional power structure in Hawaii and, as Masayo Duus demonstrates in this book, had consequences reaching all the way up to the eve of World War II.
By the end of World War I, the Hawaiian Islands had become what a Japanese guidebook called a "Japanese village in the Pacific," with Japanese immigrant workers making up nearly half the work force on the Hawaiian sugar plantations. Although the strikers eventually capitulated, the Hawaiian territorial government, working closely with the planters, cracked down on the strike leaders, bringing them to trial for an alleged conspiracy to dynamite the house of a plantation official. And to end dependence on Japanese immigrant labor, the planters lobbied hard in Washington to lift restrictions on the immigration of Chinese workers. Placing the event in the context of immigration history as well as diplomatic history, Duus argues that the clash between the immigrant Japanese workers and the Hawaiian oligarchs deepened the mutual suspicion between the Japanese and United States governments. Eventually, she demonstrates, this suspicion led to the passage of the so-called Japanese Exclusion Act of 1924, an event that cast a long shadow into the future.
Drawing on both Japanese- and English-language materials, including important unpublished trial documents, this richly detailed narrative focuses on the key actors in the strike. Its dramatic conclusions will have broad implications for further research in Asian American studies, labor history, and immigration history.

4 out of 5 stars Good news, Bad news.......2006-12-19

The good news is there are tons of songs in this book and you'll have many hours of fun learning all sorts of new music. For that alone, this book is worth having.

The bad news: The Fiddle, Mandolin, and guitar versions of this book all have exactly the same song list all in the same keys. This is great because your fiddler, mandolin and guitar player all have the same reference to the same songs and can easily play together. The banjo book, however, does not have the same song listing. Many of the songs in the other 3 books are not in this book. Also, quite a bit of the music is in "Melodic clawhammer" style. If you don't play that style then you'll miss out on about half of the songs in this book.

However, the music that is here is pretty darn fun. Just be aware that if the other members of your group all have this book then your book won't match up to thiers.

3 out of 5 stars Hard to read between the lines.......2006-11-02

LOTS of good tunes; however, the print is too small and the tab noteheads are between the staff lines rather than on them, as more commonly found, making for difficult sightreading. It's still a very good resource for Oldtime/Bluegrass pieces for the banjo.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of banjo tunes!.......2006-03-10

This is a great book if you already know how to play and just want a lot of tunes. My only complaint is that not all tunes are available in all styles. (That is, some have a clawhammer arrangement, some have a 3-finger arrangement, and some have both.) I can't really blame the authors, though, as it's a pretty large volume as it is. Overall, it's exactly what it's advertised to be.

5 out of 5 stars Banjo Picker's Fakebook by David Brody.......2000-07-01

This book is 216 pages of banjo tunes arranged for three-finger and clawhammer players. It includes a cross-reference of alternate titles and a 24 page general discography, as well as a discussion of the types of tunes included. There is also a short discussion of technical topics such as modes (very appropriate for traditional music) and how to read tablature.

This book is a lot like a Grainger's collection of fiddle tunes for flatpickers. Unlike Grainger's, which only provides enough tablature to spell out the melody for the A part and the B part, The Banjo Picker's Fakebook takes you through one whole iteration of each tune complete with first and second endings. Also like Grainger's, this is not an instruction book. It leaves both the right and left hand fingerings entirely up to the reader. For example, if you are a strictly a bluegrass player, the clawhammer arrangements will not be useful to you.

Although the discography could be used to collect aural examples of the tunes, a CD or a set of tapes would have been a welcome addition. Music is an aural art, and it is impossible to convey the full musical sense in tablature or in standard musical notation alone.

If you are looking for a lot of tunes, thoughtfully arranged in a single volume, I highly recommend The Banjo Picker's Fakebook. If the tune can't be found in this book, chances are no one eles knows it either, so you could go ahead and play anything that fit.

                    4 out of 5 stars No-nonsense collection of tunes.......2000-05-13

If you're after the usual folk-tune-collection introductions to each song, you won't find them here: just the bare bones of the songs in various arrangements (mostly clawhammer, quite a few Scruggs-style). The music speaks for itself, though, and like all books of this type it's fun to pick a page at random and see what it sounds like.

I think I've owned every edition of this book since 1978. It's been a staple in my library for years. It's a fantastic resource for tons of burning TV trivia questions. Looking forward to the new 9th edition in October 2007. Should be interesting to see the updates. Excellent book idea.

                      The title says it all.
This really is a complete reference to every network and cable TV show since 1946 up to the last date for this publication, around 2003.

All the favoutites are here that one may care to mention - from West Wing to Dallas, Star Trek to Bonanza, and others you may have forgotten - Gemini Man, AfterMASH anyone?

The strengths of this book are in the synopses which are entertaining and informtive at the same time, so this book is more than just a dry listing of information. Also included is an extensive index on such items as longest season runs, Neilsen numbers etc.

                      Highly recommended.

I purchased this book when it was first published over a dozen years ago and still refer to it several times a week. Not only is it comprehensive but Tim Brooks often gives short biographies of the stars, listing other shows and related areas for which a particular actor or actress might have been known. I'm sorry that it is currently out of print because I would like to have an updated version of the book.

This review refers to the original volume that I have sitting by my TV. In these days with cable and satellite available many vintage TV shows are aired all of the time. A quick thumb through the book not only gives excellent overall view of the show but the cross reference of stars and other shows is suburb.

I have used this book since I "found" a copy on book stand in NYC back in the 80s. Worth the purchase price.I use it all the time. The 1992 version should be better.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference material........1998-01-03

Used in conjunction with the Prime Time Stars book, this makes an excellent cross-reference of TV programs and stars for the period covered. My hopes are that the authors write a update for both the television shows and stars. The format is excellent showing all aspects of the shows including dates televised, stars and their roles, and interesting facts about the production.

Written for the impatient professional, ASP.NET 2.0 Cookbook contains more than 125 recipes for solving common and not-so-common problems you are likely to encounter when building ASP.NET-based web applications.

The recipes in this book, which run the gamut from simple coding techniques to more comprehensive development strategies, are presented in the popular Problem-Solution-Discussion format of the O'Reilly Cookbook series. As with the first edition, every solution is coded in both C# and Visual Basic 2005.

For those transitioning from ASP.NET 1.x this is a fantastic introduction to learning how things should be done with 2.0. The book is well-written, concise, and easy to absorb the concepts it presents.

I've always loved the "Cookbook" format, which is to present a list of tasks 100 or so tasks that you might want to accomplish, and then give detailed instructions on how to accomplish each one. The one thing I would like to have seen, and the reason it didn't receive 5 stars, is that the book focuses on introductory tasks. Since I've been working with 2.0 for several months I already knew how to do most of the items they discussed.

Overall, this book will serve as a great reference.

It covers the vast majority of new features in ASP 2.0 as well as new ways acomplish tasks that were more difficult in ASP 1.0. A must have in for ASP 2.0 Programmers!

Are you journeyman programmer who knows the basics of ASP.NET? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Geoffrey T Leblond and Michael A Kittel, have done an outstanding job of writing a second edition of a book that is a collection of ASP.NET 2.0 recipes that aims to help you quickly and efficiently solve many of the day-to-day problems you face when developing web applications with the .NET platform.

Leblond and Kittel, begin by showing you how to make the most out of the master pages. Then, the authors show you how to make well-informed decisions about which control to use. Next, they provide recipes that perform a number of data validation tasks. The authors then provide you with series of nonobvious solutions for working with forms. They continue by showing you how to use time- and work-savers. Then, the authors show you how to use custom controls to build your own user interface. Next, they show you how to maintain the state of the application. The authors then cover error handling at different levels of detail. They continue by providing recipes that delve into some of the most common solutions. They also cover a host of new ASP.NET 2.0 profile features. Then the authors show you how to use web parts in your applications. Next, they show you how to configure your applications. The authors show you ways on how to ensure that your applications work as anticipated in their first release, through the effective use of testing and debugging. Then, they will show you how to create and consume XML web services. Next, the authors will show you how to deal with a design that uses images for buttons, but the button labels need to be dynamic. The authors then will help you sort through the issues of caching the output of pages or portions of pages in memory to reduce latency and make your applications more responsive. They continue by showing you the basics of how to internationalize your applications. Then, the authors show you how to download files from and upload files to the web server. Next, they discuss how to measure performance. The authors then show you how to create your own custom HTTP handler. Finally, they help you with recipes that do not fit conveniently into the other chapters of the book.

This most excellent book contains dozens of code examples, ranging from relatively simple 10-liners to comprehensive, multipage solutions. More importantly, this book focuses directly on problems you face today or are likely to face in the future.

                                2 out of 5 stars ASP.NET 1.1 with a bit of 2.0 patched on.......2006-08-09

Much of the content was clearly taken from earlier 1.x versions of the book without being re-written to take advantage of 2.0. Yes, the samples may compile and work, but they are often not 2.0 best practices.

While there are several 2.0-specific sections, much 2.0 function is ignored. You'll learn more from other books.

Michael Kittel and Geoffrey LeBlond's ASP.NET 2.0 Cookbook appears in its updated 2nd edition to include all new tips for version 2.0. Here are over a hundred solutions in C# and Visual Basic aimed to web developers who want an edition completely revised for 2.0. Recipes run from the very simple coding solution to entire development strategies and use O'Reilly's problem-and-solution oriented approach. This format lends to at-a-glance reference consultation - or to use as a classroom text. Either way, the authors' some thirty years experience working with ASP.NET lends to an authoritative text of solutions to common problems.

Up-to-speed with ASP.NET? This book gives you a topic and the 5 to 24 "recipes" you need to get the common or not-so-common task done using ASP.NET. ASP.NET Developer's Cookbook will use VB.NET exclusively but will include both VB and C# examples on the supporting Web site (in both working and downloadable forms). Each recipe has what you need a brief descriptive name, followed by a description of the task, followed by the technique itself, and finally a "comments" section where the technique is discussed.

                                Download Description

ASP.NET Developer's Cookbook is the first foray into the Microsoft market within the Sams Developer?s Cookbook series. It's a perfect fit for developers that are up-to-speed with ASP.NET, in general, and want a task reference to utilize while developing their Web applications. Each chapter will consist of a brief introduction to the topic at hand, followed by 5 to 25 recipes, task-oriented examples of how to do common and not so common tasks using ASP.NET. The book will use VB.NET exclusively but will include both VB and C# examples on the supporting Web site (in both working and downloadable forms). Each recipe will consist of a brief descriptive name, a longer but brief description of the task, techniques to use, and finally concluded with a comments section where the technique is discussed.

4 out of 5 stars A decent book to get you started on ASP.NET.......2005-11-11

As a .NET middletier developer who has never ventured much into ASP.NET GUI development, I found this book to be pretty informative to get started on 'How-to' do many things...all compiled into one single place. e.g. to get a page up and running with a bunch of useful controls on it instead of wading through pages and pages of documentation or descriptions given in other books.

I sat and compared the OReilly cook book which was also good but half of that book is filled with lots of unrelated code (both VB and C#) which is distracting when u want to focus on something specific. And to me having a book that explains simple things too much in detail makes it boring!.

This book is not for advanced programmers who write jazzy sites nor for people who dont know how to spell aspx but should be helpful for all others in-between as a recipe book of how to do something...quick.

And that really helps when preparing for interviews!

This book has many many examples. However, they are not documented very well. Most all of them are useless also. I'd pay $5 to $10 MAX! Save your money and buy a good book from the Microsoft Press.

1 out of 5 stars Book for the novices.......2005-01-08

This book is definately for the novice crowd. I was expecting some more advanced concepts or examples, but found very basic info. I didn't learn a single new thing about .NET by using this book, and especially when you compare it to other books.

The book really just goes into some basic examples in each chapter followed by some code to go with it, but there are no real tips or tricks of value. Everything in here is a rehash of what's on MSDN, the web or in other books.

                                3 out of 5 stars Incomplete - really.......2004-09-21

I liked the book for the format but my copy is missing many pages! It jumps from page 190 directly to page 239! No they were not taken out of the book, the book binding is perfect - no tears, no rips - just missing! I'm returning it and looking elsewhere.

If you've been seriously programming for a while in ASP.NET, don't waste your time with this book. Having spent a lot of time searching and reading on msdn.microsoft.com and other sites to enhance my skill set, I bought this book thinking I would find some advanced concepts that I haven't already picked up on my own. There are no advanced concepts, just a bunch of very simple examples, some of which do not even work. I was very disappointed with this book and sent it back the same day it arrived.
