Book Description
Our connection to the horse is ancient and visceral. These humble creatures are mentioned in the earliest samplings of the written word, which illustrates how the human/equine bond transcends cultural and economic barriers. The horse's integral role in man's evolution, society's development and the growth of civilizations is unquestioned; they have been immortalized by Hollywood, cherished by little girls and mourned by warriors. Chicken Soup for the Horse Lover's Soul is filled with inspiring stories of rescue and rehabilitation, heartbreaking losses, dedication and commitment, and positive messages of responsibility and unconditional love. Readers will enjoy uplifting and humorous stories that depict the horse's intelligence, versatility and intuitiveness; they will discover the horse's healing powers, marvel at the graceful performance of a Grand Prix Dressage winner, be awed by the stamina and strength of a working horse and the athletic prowess of a champion racer. In exchange for our love and companionship, horses teach us, heal us, protect us and guide us. Chicken Soup for the Horse Lover's Soul is a worthy celebration of a very noble creature.

Definately for horse lovers!.......2007-10-17
As a first time horse owner (I inhereited three in one day at the age of 24) I am constantly looking for ways to expand my knowledge of horses and all things equine-related. This book was not only inspirational, but got me familiar with terms I hadn't used in my every day language until I got my horses. This book made me laugh, sniffle, and nod my head in relation to some of the stories. This is a good book for first time horse owners and not-so-new horse owners.
Chicken Soup for the Horse Lovers Soul.......2007-01-11
This book does the line of Chicken Soup books great justice. A great read whether you love horses or not. The stories will touch everyone's hesrt.
A Horse to Ride to Your Soul.......2006-12-07
This much needed book offers readers an opportunity to feel better connected to their souls and the primal call within to connect to the beauty, strength, freedom and gentleness of not only horses but the Animal Kingdom in general. If you like or love horses, another book is also inspiring: ON THE TRAIL OF THE PONY EXPRESS by Cherokee author Jerry Ellis. He retraced the 2,000 mile route of the Pony Express Trail by horse, foot, covered wagon and canoe. The non-fiction adventure book is filled with the history and spirit of the Pony Express riders who became part of the great American West.
Good Book.......2006-11-30
I like horses, but I had a hard time getting into this book. Some of the stories were better than others. I think two of my favorite stories were the one about the Horse at Harvard and the one about the horses surrounding and protecting the baby. Most of the stories were good. This is a book about true horse stories.
Most Heartwarming Book.......2006-11-10
Horse people and non-horse people alike will fall in love with "Chicken Soup for the Horse Lover's Soul". This book contains seven sections of "Inspirational Stories About Horses and the People Who Love Them". The first section "A Special Bond" contains stories of the connection and friendship between humans and horses. "Horses as Teachers", the second section in the book, is filled with stories of how horses have taught us to take a break from the every day rat race and taught us a lesson or two on just enjoying life. The third section of this Chicken Soup book is called "These Amazing Animals". This section has many stories of the astonishing accomplishments of horses and the things they have helped us to do. Section four, "Horses as Healers", is the one section where you are sure to bawl your eyes out. It contains touching stories of horses helping us get over our fears and overcome any road blocks or rough patches in our lives. The "On Companionship and Commitment" part of the book is much like the first section, focusing on those unique horse-human bonds. "And... They're Off" is a special section dedicated fully to racehorses. Last but most certainly not least, is "Horse... Cetera" where all the other heartwarming stories are placed that just didn't fit into any of the other sections.
"Chicken Soup for the Horse Lover's Soul" is even great for people who aren't exactly "Horse Lovers". The book's main focus may be about horses but it is also about inspiration. On every page you are sure to find something that will really help you to live life to the fullest. When you're down in the dumps, "Chicken Soup for the Horse Lover's Soul" will help you to see that eventually, things will work out and everything will be okay. So get out there! Live your life like there's no tomorrow! Read "Chicken Soup for the Horse Lover's Soul"!

Book Description
More than 40,000 children die daily in the developing world from avoidable sickness and disease. Tens of millions of children labor in factories, mines, mills and sweatshops, or scavenge for a living on city streets and dumps. In the so-called developed world, children's lives are similarly blighted by drugs, alcohol, sexual abuse and violence. Children of the rich are unhealthily obsessed with consumerist desires while children of the poor suffer from lack of opportunity. The global market is responsible for both of these ills.
In "Children of Other Worlds" Jeremy Seabrook examines the international exploitation of children and exposes the hypocrisy, piety and moral blindness that have informed so much of the debate in the West on the rights of the child. Seabrook insists that the whole question of protecting children's rights, North and South, must take into consideration the structural abuses of humanity that are inherent in globalization. He addresses the key question of whether the West can turn its 'benevolent' attention to the evils of child labor in the rest of the world without first understanding that gross forms of poverty anywhere are part of the same global problem.
Customer Reviews:
Cure the Source.......2004-07-17
This ethnography served to not only shed light on the horror that is child labor, but it also served as a reality check. Child labor is terrible but the alternatives are worse. The revelation afforded by this ethnography is that laws against child labor do not solve the problem. Children will only find a new way to secure money. The new alternatives are worse and include begging, stealing, and/or prostitution. In fact, child labor is often their only way of survival.
thoughtful and disturbing.......2004-05-08
this book is thoughtful and disturbing; it has research that may seem dry at times, but when you consider the human cost behind the numbers, it is horrifying. the author opens discussions about child labor and abuse within the context of social mores that are fascinating; then leaves the reader to decide for herself. well worth the read although i found myself unable even more convinced that child labor is a crime against humanity that must be stopped.

Great Primer on Music PR.......2002-11-22
This was one of the early books I read on music publicity. Pettigrew offers solid advice on how to put together press kits and give the media what they need to cover your music. You'll need to continue your PR studies beyond this guide, but it provides a darn good start. -Bob Baker, author, "Guerrilla Music Marketing Handbook: 201 Self-Promotion Ideas for Songwriters, Musicians & Bands"
Good basic info, but dated.......2002-01-30
This book is probably of use to musicians who have no experience with publicity. I am a publicist who has represented authors and companies. I bought the book looking for information that would give me an understanding of specifics that are unique to music industry publicity. While this book provided a little of that information, I found it more helpful to confer with other music industry publicists, instead. This book does give you basics on what to include in your press kit and how to find some media contacts.
The book is obviously dated and could use with a revision, especially in the technology area, which has revolutionized how publicity is done. If you are a complete beginner, this book can be helpful, but you will need a lot more to launch a truly successful campaign.
A Must Have!.......2001-09-19
As a singer looking to make a living out of the music industry, I was looking for a quality book such as this, to save me time and money while promoting my talent by making it public. It's a "user friendly" read, and offers professional, time saving advice and examples, forcing one to take a professional attitude with publicity, and making actual steps in moving forward. The contents of this book are so well done, it even makes for an excellent reference tool, as well. GET THIS BOOK, and I'll see you at the top!
If your a musician starting out, look into this book.......2001-05-25
This book is a good start for any new artist who is looking for a quick understanding of the music industry. Jim Pettigrew Jr. includes guidelines for many different positions with music publicity. I used this book for an internship in music publishing and I found this book to be very informative. There is a fairly large section on how to create press kits that was very instrumental for any new musician looking to gain publicity. Pettigrew Jr. makes sure to provide information on all aspects of music publicity, including the importance of the press kit jackets to the process of finding a photographer. The book is easy to read and techniques are simple to understand. Pettigrew Jr.'s guide is an essential tool for anyone involved in the music industry.
Good info about press kits, but dated internet information.......1999-11-05
This book was an invaluable resource on preparation of press kits, even including visual samples of the different components of them. It had considerably less information on other facets of publicity, but enough to give a publicist (or band, or label) direction.
The internet information was mostly quaint, and even laughable at times: "There are numerous sites on the Web now. By the end of the decade, they'll number in the thousands."
Despite its dated internet information, this book was very informative from all levels of publicists or musicians.

Book Description
In his 1962 book The Gutenberg Galaxy, Marshall McLuhan wrote the famous words: "The new electronic interdependence recreates the world in the image of a global village." As predicted by the renowned Canadian media theorist, satellite telecommunications, beginning with the first Sputnik launch in 1957, united humanity under a vast "cosmic membrane." An immense web of waves echo information around the planet, and distance and time are abolished. Dreams, upheavals, trends, and conflicts are now experienced on a global scale. Global Village: The 1960s plumbs the depths of those planetary echoes as they resonated throughout the decade in the fields of visual arts, decorative arts, fashion, and architecture. Along with a wealth of images, it contains interviews with diverse key figures of the time, including designer Ettore Sottsass, art critic Arthur Danto, artist Yoko Ono, filmmaker Agn s Varda, curator Okwui Enwezor, writer Tobias Wolff, playwright Michel Tremblay, and artist Carolee Schneeman.

To truly know Maya is to know MEL, and to know MEL, you should read Learning Maya 5: MEL Fundamentals. MEL (Maya Embedded Language) is the underlying engine on which Maya is built. MEL makes everything possible, and with MEL you can do almost anything, from creating your own interface for Maya to creating self-animating objects to making blanket changes to a single attribute for every object in a project.
But while explaining what MEL is takes only a sentence or two, learning how it works and making it do what you want can easily take many volumes, or one good one. MEL Fundamentals is perhaps the best introduction to MEL to come along in years. Twelve chapters, 250 pages, and a CD full of files takes the beginning MEL user/Maya artist on a trip into the inner workings of Maya and shows how to use MEL for everything from adding items to shelves to altering the workspace to controlling animated objects.
There are numerous outstanding examples throughout the book such as how to rig a light to flicker on each time it turns on instead of just switching on, or how to add countless railroad ties to a set of train tracks, or how to control the animation of the flowing wings of a Manta Ray by controlling one object. The section on creating custom UIs can turn into a very valuable chapter for those looking to save time by customizing the interface. Here, you'll learn how to create your own windows with your own buttons for the most frequently used commands, or create sets of windows that feature different toolsets for various modes of working. MEL is a powerful and complex tool, and one that shouldn't be overlooked or thought of as a geek's tool.
Learning Maya 5: MEL Fundamentals, part of the "Learning Maya" series from Sybex, includes a CD containing all files referred to throughout the book, and a DVD that introduces some of the features new to Maya 5, making this book and the whole series a valuable asset for any Maya artist. --Mike Caputo
Book Description

Knowing MEL will permit you to customize the Maya UI, automate repetitive tasks, modify existing tools, and even create your own tools. This book is written for the artist, so don't be intimidated if you have no prior programming experience.
Features:
Starting from an introductory level, this book will allow you to explore advanced concepts in a comfortable format. Each topic is explored in both theory and practice so that you'll not only understand the concepts presented, you'll be able to complete easy-to-follow, step-by-step tutorials to ensure that you master them. You'll benefit from sample scripts and examples that will prove invaluable to you as your Maya skills increase. In addition, you'll take advantage of valuable chapter-by-chapter overviews provided in QuickTime(r) format on CD-ROM. Offered by Glen Chang, and Alias|Wavefront(TM) Certified Instructor, these helpful movies will allow you to gain additional insight as you work through the book.

And much more...
Customer Reviews:
A good introduction..........2007-06-10
Finding a MEL scripting book with useful, simple examples has been quite challenging for me. MEL Fundamentals does provide a good basic foundation for
understanding what MEL script can be used for, but it could show more...
The book is broken down into several chapters, which cover the basics of the following:
-Understanding what MEL Script is used for
-Using MEL Script to customize the Maya interface
-Using MEL Script to create custom GUIs to control nodes in your scene (Graphical User Interfaces)
-Variables and Expressions
-Conditional Statements (If Else, If Else If, If Else If Else)
-Loops (FOR and FOR IN loops)
-Procedures
The book was written for Maya 5.0 - and I have yet to see an updated text that reflects the most current version of Maya to date (v 8.5 as of this review).
There are several 'real world' examples that will further help students understand how powerful MEL Script really is. One thing I wish the book covered is how to deal with negative numbers in expressions. MEL Fundamentals is sparse in several areas, but this book's intended focus is to provide a quick introduction and nothing more.
The book includes a DVD with all examples already typed in. In addition, the supplied code works in all versions of Maya I have used it with (v5.0, v6.0, v7.0, v8.0 and v8.5).
If you're curious about MEL script and want to learn more, this book provides a decent introduction. Intermediate MEL developers should look elsewhere for in-depth coverage.
Very good book.......2003-11-19
I have not bought this book till now but my friend has and he liked it very much. He should have given a review but he is lazy. So, I am doing his part. A very good book to learn MEL expressions and make use of them in animation. The DVD has some cool stuff focusing on Maya 5 Features and MEL Fundamentals!
