Book Description
On an unprecedented scale, nations at all income levels and across the political spectrum have initiated privatization programs over the past twenty years. In the course of this privatization movement, microeconomic efficiency arguments have become the standard justification for the divestment of public assets. This book presents an alternate view and argues that short-term macroeconomic considerations are often the true motive behind privatization programs. Why Do Government Divest? The Macroeconomics of Privatization is a comprehensive treatment of the macroeconomic issues of privatization. In addition to reviewing topics in economic growth and efficiency, this book explores the fiscal, monetary, balance-of-payments, and employment aspects of privatization. Several diverse case studies illustrate how the pursuit of such short-term political objectives can reduce the benefits of privatization.

A Macro View of Privatization.......2001-05-22
While many authors have conducted micro-based analysis showing the potential efficiency gains from privatization Alfred Schipke takes a macro view of privatization which has been a key policy area in both eastern Europe and western Europe as well as in many developing countries in the 1990s. This study has a strong focus on macroeconomic aspects of privatization, eg growth, balance of payments, employment and monetary and fiscal outcomes. The author starts with a review of the theoretical and empirical literature on public versus private ownership with emphasis on efficiency and growth. Next Alfred Schipke looks into some political economy aspects of privatization followed by a careful analysis of the fiscal motives for privatization. The author rightly points out that fiscal policy makers typically have a short time horizon and rarely consider the broader aspects of intertemporal budget constraints. Schipke looks into a rich variety of policy experiences, including Germany, Pakistan, Jamaica and some eastern European countries. Interestingly, the author also presents a quantitative modelling approach of privatization which is well suited to highlight some key issues. The book offers new insights both from a theoretical and empirical point of view and adds much to the more traditional debate about privatization. Schipke's book is a timely excellent analysis of the key privatization issues at the macro level, and by presenting both modelling approaches as well as thorough case studies the author contributes with advanced material to a core area of economic research and policy analysis. Highly recommended!

And you thought "dental humor" is an oxymoron!.......2003-02-13
If you are looking for hilarious dental jokes, short stories, poems, cartoons, and experiences in the dental chair, then this book is perfect for you. I tried searching specifically for dental jokes online but none existed. Fortunately, Dr. Sonis complied this anthology of the best of dental humor from professional and mainstream publications like the Journal of American Dental Association and Gary Larson's "The Far Side". I strongly recommend this book for all audiences including dental students, dentists, and of course, us patients. This book makes an excellent coffee table book, or in this case, dentist waiting room table book for a leisurely read and laughter. Overall, the hours of content in this book provides an excellent source of laughing gas at a great value.
Book Description
The first in-depth history of the involvement of African-Americans in the early recording industry, this book examines the first three decades of sound recording in the United States, charting the vigorous and varied roles black artists played in the period leading up to the Jazz Age.
Applying more than thirty years of scholarship, Tim Brooks identifies key black artists who recorded commercially in a wide range of genres and provides in-depth biographies of some forty of these audio pioneers. Brooks assesses the careers and impacts, as well as analyzing the recordings, of figures including George W. Johnson, Bert Williams, George Walker, Noble Sissle, Eubie Blake, the Fisk Jubilee Singers, W. C. Handy, James Reese Europe, Wilbur Sweatman, Harry T. Burleigh, Roland Hayes, Booker T. Washington, and boxing champion Jack Johnson, as well as a host of lesser-known voices.
Because they were viewed as "novelty" or "folk" artists, nearly all of these African Americans were allowed to record commercially in their own distinctive styles, and in practically every genre: popular music, ragtime, jazz, cabaret, classical, spoken word, politics, poetry, and more. The sounds they preserved reflect the actual emerging black culture of that tumultuous and creative period. The stories gathered here give a previously unavailable insight into the early history of the recording industry, as well as the racially complex landscape of post-Civil War society at large.
Lost Sounds also includes Brooks's selected discography of CD reissues, and an appendix from Richard K. Spottswood describing early recordings by black artists in the Caribbean and South America.
Customer Reviews:
No library shelf should be without it.......2005-04-03
A few pages into this book, one realizes the title is a double entendre. The recorded sounds documented here - which include popular music, ragtime, jazz, cabaret, classical, spoken word, politics, poetry, and more - are not merely "lost" in the sense that their existence has been uncelebrated. They are also in danger of being lost to us forever if immediate steps are not taken to preserve the fragile materials upon which they live.
Additionally, U.S. copyright laws have made it nearly impossible for anyone to reissue them as CDs. According to the author, there were approximately 800 recordings made by African Americans prior to 1920, the majority of which are still intact but half of which are owned by successor corporations like Sony and BMG who will neither reissue them nor allow anyone else to do so. Which explains why the majority of this material ends up being released overseas.
The book documents more than 40 artists chronologically, assessing their work and skillfully placing their biographies within the context of a complex and tumultuous era. It covers the famous (Bert Williams, Eubie Blake, Fisk Jubilee Singers) and a host of lesser-knows. The Discography provides a listing of CD reissues (if available) for each chapter, plus web sites where you'll most likely find them.
While seemingly an exhaustive tome, the author himself reminds us it's intended to stimulate preservation and future research: the final chapter "Miscellaneous Recordings" examines unissued recordings, "custom" noncommercial recordings, rumored but unconfirmed recordings, records by artists sometimes misidentified as black and more, in the hopes that future research will turn up more information.
Though massive at 656 pages, the book is highly readable and entertaining, very well organized and indexed making it easy to zoom in on particular aspects of interest. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the era of early recording in general, or African American studies in particular, and feel no library shelf should be without it. It's a wonderful resource for interdisciplinary studies.
A colorful look at a forgotten era.......2005-01-20
What a delight this thick book is, and what a challenge to describe adequately in a few sentences.
"Lost Sounds" is a detailed look at an aspect of the American music industry that is not just forgotten; it seems never to have been fully appreciated -- the early years of recorded music, with an emphasis on the essential contribution made by African American artists. The book has been praised as a unique reference work, and it is that; but it is also a rich history of late 19th- and early 20th-century American popular culture, as well as a collection of poignant personal stories of the entertainers who created it. Along the way, the book offers a primer on recording technology. And, although these accounts of once-popular performers and their now-unfamiliar careers and music are not in the least preachy, they do constitute a carefully documented examination of a key -- and painful -- era in American race relations.
Author Tim Brooks is himself an unobtrusive character in these adventures, the modest yet sympathetic researcher who has come along a century after the fact to ferret out the information, breathe new life into it, and in many instances save it from oblivion.
All of which makes "Lost Sounds" not only an extraordinary good read, but also an exceptional good deed.

Silver Surfer flies again.......2005-12-18
I read these when they first came out and they were my instant favorites--the issues featured some of Lee's best writing and art by Buscema (always great). What more could one want? You can read some of the other reviews for summaries, but issue #5 won the "Academy Award" for best comic that year and it holds up well over time.
As I re-read these issues, I was still impressed by everything, but I can also see why the series didn't last. For most comic readers of the time (perhaps today as well), the Surfer is sometimes overly preachy and the conflicts (inner and outer) are very serious with none of the humorous banter that shows up in the FF or the wise-cracking Spiderman. Though originally created by Jack Kirby, the Surfer as taken over by Lee and Buscema becomes more like the early Ditko Spiderman who can't ever get a break. However, Marvel was reaching for an older audience (hence the "expensive" 25 cent larger size), and, unfortunately, it didn't work well enough. The last few issues (in the second volume) are a disappointment as Lee drops back to a smaller comic size and lower price and introduces guest-star battles. Even so, these Surfer issues remain one of Marvel's (and Stan Lee's) brightest accomplishments.
Marvel Masterworks means definite masterpiece.......2005-12-03
If the comics are reprinted under the Marvel Masterworks title, it's gotta be a masterpiece, and the Silver Surfer stories written by Stan Lee are definitely classics.
The Silver Surfer has always been one of my favorite comic characters, unfortunately, there were never many Silver Surfer books. This TPB collects the first 6 issues of the original Silver Surfer story. Written by legend among comic creaters, and founder of Marvel, Stan Lee, and pencilled by a lengend in his own right, John Buscema. Together they bring us one of the best comics of Marvel, the origin of the Silver Surfer. Originallt named Norrin Radd, the Silver Surfers acquired his powers of the cosmos when the almighty Galactus threatened to destroy Norrin Radd's home planet. To save his planet Norrin Radd became Galactus's herald looking for other planets for Galactus to devour, in the process, acquiring his powers. But when the Silver Surfer defied Galactus when he tried to devour Earth, Galactus trapped the Surfer on Earth. But even though the Surfer save Earth from being destroyed, the humans did not know it and always thought of the Silver Surfer as a menace, too blinded by the fact that he's different to see his good will. On Earth, the Sufer will fight many villains, including a misterious alien race, Mephisto, and even the Mighty Thor, but only because he was decieved by the evil Loki. But even after all he has done the human race just cannot except him, instead they hate and fear him. This book is beautifully written, wonderful story, and great read.
If you're a Silve Surfer fan, this is a must-have, beautifully restored and you are bound to enjoy it.
Wonderful Addition to My Collection: A True Masterwork.......2005-08-05
As a longtime Silver Surfer fan, who didn't managed to keep very many issues over the years, I am delighted to find a collection such as this. I am not at all disappointed with my purchase, but will have to struggle a bit to limit my reading of this to just a few times so that I can keep it in pristine condition.
The art of this collection is exquisitely beautiful, as always with Silver Surfer stories. "Masterworks" is truly an appropriate title because both the art and storytelling are masterful, treating Stan Lee's greatest character creation (in my opinion) with the loving care a masterpiece deserves.
The stories in this book very much embody the true essence of Silver Surfer and everything that is wonderful about his saga. Please excuse any gushing in my descriptions, but I am sure that many other female Surfer fans feel the same way I do about this amazing character.
Having read the six stories in this book without pausing, I am once again mesmerized and awed by the many exceptional qualities of my favorite superhero: self-sacrifice, insight, humanity despite not being human, kindness, trusting nature, sensitivity, the ever-cool surfing the solar winds skills, quick thinking, ability to look at the big picture, amazing speed, no apparent Achilles heel (other than a trusting and kind nature), purity of motives and spirit, no human flaws such as greed or pride, compassion, tremendous power, etc. Also, his expressions are often incredibly endearing; for example, frequent expressions of surprise and delight, which contrast nicely to his normal stoicism. The unique and engaging villains are also an interesting element in these tales.
The morals and values present in these stories are highly significant. I believe kids should definitely be encouraged to read them. Parents striving to raise decent human beings, and the heroes of our future, would do well to encourage this pursuit because the lessons in this book are well worth learning.
J.H. Sweet, author of The Fairy Chronicles, and Silver Surfer fan
six.......2005-05-07
This book is helpful as it has six stories instead of the five it was originally released with, the last WORLDS WITHOUT END being a particular favourite of mine
Issue number 3 should not be missed!.......2004-06-18
The reason I give this four stars, not five, is because I didn't like the first two issues collected very much. They are OK, but the series really gets going with issue 3, in which he battles Miphisto for the first time and which is one of the greatest Marvel comics ever! I didn't really care much for Silver Surfer before reading this issue, which captures his unique personality, nobility and charm extremely well. I read the issue without any prior knowledge that issue 3 was regarded as a classic so there was no preconceived notions on my part. I liked it based on its merit alone. Later, I found out that the story is highly regarded in many circules and all I can say is that it truly deserves to be called a classic. Issues four and onwards maintain a high quality also, although not as good as the flawless issue 3. And Buscema's art is brilliant. As much as I like Kirby, he draws the Silver Surfer much, much better. This is even better than his early Conan work, in which he kind of drew Conan looking a bit too weak for my tastes. And I never really held Stan Lee in such high regard before reading the Masterworks volumes. I always thought he was just a self-promoter but his work stands well on its own. The fact that he and Kirby created so many classic characters is testament to his talent as a writer/creator.
Customer Reviews:
Stan's greatest triumph.......2006-08-20
The Surfer is, or rather was, the prototypical tragic character. He was confined to earth after having soared the universe and to boot, is a romantic soul pining away for his lost love.
Jack Kirby came up with the idea for Galactus' herald but it was Stan who brought him to life. While it is true that this volume contains more than one soliloquy (ok, lamentation), it is also true that it is one of Lee's finer moments as a writer.
If the other reviews of this book are any indication then this is clearly not a book for everyone and if you are looking for the latter-day Surfer then you will be disappointed. In my opinion, this is the best Surfer ever.
It would be disrespectful of me should I fail to point out that John Buscema was in his heyday when he drew these powerful images.
What more can you say- classic Silver Surfer!!.......1999-10-19
I'll give you the straight info on this one, true believers... the plots and scripting by Stan Lee are mostly boring and repetitive (exception being issue number 4, where we Journey into Mystery, and Asgard, with Thor, Loki and the gang), as the Surfer consistently loses every conflict that he is involved in- c'mon Stan, you write a book about a super hero that always loses, then complains about it, and you really wonder how it got cancelled?? However, the true art and beauty behind this collection lies in the breathtaking artwork by Big John Buscema. Face front, comic fans, this is some of the cleanest and most powerful cosmic comic art ever produced, and you'd be doing yourself a favor to pick it up. You'll probably be disappointed by the writing, but for the sake of Buscema's work alone you'll agree that it's worth the cost (and that Thor story is pretty keen, too...)

Comics via Shakespeare.......2006-08-20
While this volume of the Surfer's exploits has been variously reviewed as (a) some of Jack Kirby's greatest work and (b) a great Golden Age read, it is neither. What it is is unparalleled characterization.
This Silver Age run of the Surfer, by Stan Lee and John Buscema, sees Lee channeling Shakespeare for the plots and dialogue. To call this book tragedy would not be wrong. Lee so loved what he wrote here that he refused to change directions to save the book from cancellation and also refused to let any other writer work with the character for many years. And he was right. This is SF Hamlet and one of 2 volumes of the Surfer that are must-haves for the true fan of Norrin Rad, Stan Lee or John Buscema.
Ride on Silver Warrior!.......2000-05-17
I have been a fan of the Silver Surfer ever since I was a kid, and this collection of stories did not dissapoint. Collected in this edition are ten "golden-age" stories which truly capture the surfer at his freshest and best. Buy this if you appreciate the true art of comics

Customer Reviews:
Worth it !.......2007-01-04
Over the years, I have bought a pile of "How to" books on After Effects,Première Pro, Photoshop and Illustrator and I did not feel any urge to write anything about these books before buying Ms Hartman's Illustrator guide.
I liked the writing : unpretentious, simple with a warm tone that clicks with the reader.
The first lesson in itself, is worth more than half the price of the book.
A short, but good guide to Illustrator.......2006-05-07
This book is a guide to learning Adobe Illustrator CS and digital illustration. The approach is divided between reading sections and step-by-step exercises. Each chapter is divided into several short lessons with accompanying images describing the steps. The key combination and minor interface differences for Mac and windows are explained when necessary.
Overall, this was a good book that provided a smooth experience to learning Illustrator and design in general. The basics of Illustrator are easy to understand through the reading and exercises provided. Although the lessons are short, there is plenty of opportunity to practice on your own. You are initially walked through an exercise, but then usually given a chance to finish part of it on your own. The "Exploring On Your Own" sections provides extra practice and places to look for more information on the various topics discussed. The rest of the book in dedicated to providing useful information on design concepts such as color chords and art principles (line, fill, value etc). The color chords such as analogous, dyad or monochromatic will definitely help on my color choices on my next project. The CD provides all the needed lesson files and any additional samples for practice.
As for problems, most were really minor with this book. There were only a few minor errors spotted such as steps with missing detail or incorrect menu paths. Also, I did think the review questions at the end of each chapter would have been more helpful if the answers were provided. Actually, the biggest issue I had with this book was the novel sized format it was published in. The book is small and the pages are difficult to keep open. Even my document holder was barely able to keep the pages open. For most of the book I had to use one hand to keep it open while working the mouse with the other. I am probably just being a little finicky since most of these minor problems had little effect on actual content.
In the end, this is still a fine book to quickly get up to speed with Adobe Illustrator. The coverage on related design principles was just a bonus. Since this is a short book, do not expect deep coverage on Illustrator techniques. If you need more advanced concepts and/or less on design, then another book will probably work out better. However, the material that is covered is done so well and it should provide a good start for any beginner.
Illustrator CS.......2006-02-28
This book honestly is like a guide line. Especially if you need to look up something you can't remember, you can probably find what you need in the book.
Everything I needed.......2005-07-20
I am a computer programmer/web designer familiar with adobe photoshop, but I wanted to learn more about designing with illustrator. I knew how to get around the program, but was not confident in using it. This book was wonderful - it's great for beginners, and I love how it encourages you to use keystrokes to get things done, instead of the mouse (much faster).
A most excellent tutorial!.......2005-07-19
This book really showed me, step by (illustrated) step, the way to make the most out of using Illustrator. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes the hands-on approach to learning. In the very first lesson, the author helped me create a logo that was really great looking, which gave me a boost of confidence to go on and do more. This book is just great for a beginner, to learn all the essentials of Illustrator.
