Comes in Handy.......2007-10-25
My colleague must have taken a hint from the scratch on my forehead, the bags under my eyes and the black-and-blue mark on my shin. Or maybe she knew that a centuries-old house would be fraught with things that needed to be repaired. Whatever the reason, she showed up at my house with Dare to Repair and it was the perfect housewarming gift. I was too knee-deep in the cosmetic stuff--removing wallpaper, sanding floors, installing countertops and light fixtures--to get to some of the things in the book. Frankly, some of the others I just hadn't thought about. I had already completed some of the tasks in this book - replacing electrical switches, cleaning a stove's grease filter (ugh!), disengaging an electric garage door opener, locating the main water supply valve, finding contractors. But this book reminded me of the things that I hadn't gotten to yet - bleeding the hot-water radiator, creating a circuit map, adjusting the garage-door closer. And it educated me on the things that I hadn't considered--fixing a dishwasher, repairing a slow-filling washing machine, replacing a round doorknob with a lever, winterizing the plumbing. (I wish I had this book before I broke a locked door open.) Hats off to the posters who found little use for this book: I know more than a few people of both genders who haven't completed many of the tasks in Dare to Repair. I've completed more complicated tasks than the ones in the book and still found the book useful. (My contractor offered me a job as his assistant.) Even if you complete just one task in the book, you will have recouped your investment.

Takes you step by step through home basics-repeat-basics, like lighting the pilot light on a heater, patching a nail hole in a wall, etc. Fun, easy to follow and great for the timid!

Except for the girl power cover art and the fun, feminine little anecdotes that precede each section ("If you can paint your nails, you can do this repair. Just don't get the enamels mixed up!"), there isn't much that deciphers this book from any other general home repair guide...and that's not necessarily a bad thing.
"Dare to Repair" bills itself as "a do-it-HERself guide," but the information in this book is useful for both men and women alike. The material in the book is well-organized and easy to understand. The authors explain how different things in the home work, from sinks to refrigerators to door locks. Each task is detailed in easy-to-understand language and is accompanied by helpful illustrations. As a new homeowner, I find this book very helpful and refer to it quite often. I'm sure it will end up saving me a lot of money down the line! (There's also a "Dare to Repair" book about auto maintenance, and I'm going to buy it because the home repair guide is so good.)
I fixed my toilet!.......2006-07-27
While I'm a little terrified of major repairs, this book is great for the kind of things that are too small to deal with the expense of calling a plumber but too big to just leave it alone. Good instructions, fun to read. Make sure you have all the tools before you start! I read over the instructions, wrote down what I needed, went to the hardware store and stopped by own damn toilet from running.
prefer reader's digest book.......2006-05-23
I didn't find that there was enough basic information in this book to be useful to me. I think the author is trying to make money off of the "concept" rather than provide lots of informative information. And I admit, I was lured into the "concept" and bought the book, with much disapointment.
For me the 1001 Do It Yourself hints & tips by reader's digest is more comprehensive with 100x more information than this book. In addition, the reader's digest books is geared towards ANYONE, because this is information that everyone needs for their first home, not just "women". In the reader's digest book you learn about plumbing basics, how to deal with kitchen fires, leaks and everything inbetween. (You can preview the book on Amazon too!)

His voice was instantly recognizable. Red Barber's languid drawl was so familiar to baseball fans of the '30s through the '60s that it seemed like he'd single-handedly invented the art of play-by-play announcing. The truth is, he pretty much did: the old redhead sitting up in what he called his catbird seat, telling stories as integral to the game as the sound of horsehide on leather. His autobiography is, in a sense, the story of American sportscasting, but it is also much more than that; it is also a story of triumph over prejudice, and integrity over comfort. A son of the Old South, Barber grew up in a racist world, and took that world with him when he moved north to Brooklyn, and he experienced first-hand its head-on collision with what would be the new world of integrated baseball. Barber was the Dodgers broadcaster when Branch Rickey decided he would smash the color line; Barber was one of the first he informed of his plans.
"I believe," Barber recalls in the most moving section of a wonderful memoir, "that he told me about it so far in advance so that I could have time to wrestle with the problem, live with it, solve it ... I set out to do a deep self-examination. I attempted to find out who I was." This is remarkable candor in a sporting memoir, more remarkable for the way Barber brings us in to his own confrontation with himself, and his conclusion that Jackie Robinson ultimately did far more for him than he, as the voice that introduced Robinson to baseball fans, ever did for Robinson.
Barber is helped throughout by his magnificent ability to tell stories, remember details, and turn past into present. THIS IS A GOOD SOLID YARN ABOUT ONE OF THE BEST RADIO MEN IN THE HISTORY OF BROADCASTING. RED BARBER WRITES ABOUT HIS LIFE AND BEHIND THE SCENES IN THE BROADCASTING INDUSTRY. HIS HONESTY AND DETAILED RENDITION MAKE THIS A GOOD READ. WISH HE WOULD HAVE WRITTEN MORE ABOUT THE GAMES HE COVERED BUT THAT IS THE ONLY REAL THING I DIDN'T LIKE ABOUT THIS. FOR ALL FANS OF BASEBALL AND BROADCASTING HISTORY BUFFS. RECOMMENDED.

Problem here is that it isn't Barber's book. Creamer, about as southern as Halifax, slicks matters. Skip this. Look at Barber's work without Creamer on 1947 or actual NPR broadcast transcripts, edited, but not intruded upon by Bob Edwards.

While you are reading this book you can feel the breeze coming through the open windows of a warm summer afternoon. The curtains are billowing and the radio is crackling with excitement. You can hear the crack of the bat, the sing of leather hitting wood. When on the road, going from city to city you are jostled by the motion of the train. Mr. Barber writes such a descriptive story, that you feel that you are right there as part of the story. This takes you back to a gentler time in life. I read this book at the start of every baseball season and never tire of it. I take it out of the library, I love the feel and the smell of the old yellowing pages, the black and white photographs. It puts me in the baseball mood. Sometimes, I feel as though Branch Rickey is going to join me for lunch.

As it says in the introduction, this book does not teach you everything you need to know about a topic, it is aimed strictly at test preparation and review. The authors have studied the test and put together a guide that if diligently worked will almost certainly enable you to pass the test. 70-294 is one of the core exams that everyone gaining an MCSE must pass.
This book contains a number of parts that are designed to provide information on the test. The first thing in the book is a Cram Sheet that provides key facts about the exam. This is a brief document, but covers the general areas with which you should be familiar. This is followed by the main part of the book, broken down into nine chapters. Fine - if you're only planning on taking PART of the test!!!.......2006-07-25
Have always been a fan of ExamCram books but something went very, VERY wrong with this one: not a SINGLE mention of PKI (MS exam objective "Configure Active Directory directory service for certificate publication"). Which just happens to be a HUGE part of the test.
Lots of practice questions but its hard to ignore the fact that 1. only half the book is actually review text (64 pages are spent explaining what an MCSE is and what an exam looks like, compared to 253 on review topics INCLUDING the per-topic review questions), 2. the practice questions are often outside the scope of the curriculum and exam, and there are several glaring errors in the text and in questions.
Tips for anyone preparing for the exam: 1. don't bother with this book, if the publisher can't be bothered to actually cover the curriculum then don't waste your time and money on this book. 2. the tests overlap so much now that you'll need to be up to speed on 70-291 as well (ExamCram's coverage of which is considerably better), 3. when you get questions about PKI, try not to look all surprised, 4. DON'T rely on any one publisher to cover the curriculum (I didn't) - check the MS site exam objectives, do your research (I did, and passed).
And to the publisher: you could have had this feedback directly (and privately) if your own website didn't bounce back online feedback submissions with relaying errors. If your IT folks need some help configuring mail, I'd recommend Sybex

This Book Needs To Be Reviewed.......2006-06-23
I'm currently working on my MCSE certification. I read the Microsoft Press books for each test, then supplement that with the Exam Cram 2 books. I've taken tests 70-290 and 70-291 and found the Exam Cram 2 books to be very beneficial. However, something happened with the 70-293 book. There are lots of inconsistencies and wrong information. On one page, you'll be reading about an item and what it does...on the following page, it will tell you something completely different. Sometimes there are mis-prints in the exam questions...like having the same answer printed twice in a multiple choice question. Don't get me wrong - if the real test was like that, it would be awesome. Like I said before, the first 2 books of the series were great. This one leaves something to be desired. Glad I bought the PDF version instead of the hardcover...much cheaper.
Perfect book for a last minute review.......2005-07-20
This book helped me finish a month long study/review for my 70-293 exam. Is it "the" one and only perfect book - no; no final cram book (you name the publishing comapny) ever is; but it is exactly what it is supposed to be - a final review before the exam. I found it rounded out areas from other study sources that I used and helped complement areas that I already had some knowledge in. I would recommend this as a final / additional review source for anyone studying for the 70-293 exam
Don't Buy It.......2005-05-26
This is probably one of the worst books I have read for exam review. There are so many inconsistencies and wrong answers and information that I don't trust any of the information. There are wrong listings of default services installed, two listings of port numbers with different port information, duplicated exam questions with different answers to each one, continuous repeats of the same information, wrong exam answers [even given the explanations that follow the questions), and scanty information. Don't bother.
Terrible, Terrible.......2005-05-10
Although I am a fan of the Exam Cram series, this title falls very short of my usual expectations. This book is full of inconsistencies, ambiguities and just plain mis-information. In reviewing several of the tests that are in the book it is revealed that several answers to questions either contradict themselves or are just plain wrong. I would not recommend this book to anyone studying for their MCSE. Buy the Microsoft training kit or just guess on the test, you'd have better luck.
