Aimed at nothing less than totally restructuring the diets of Americans, Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy may well accomplish its goal. Dr. Walter C. Willett gets off to a roaring start by totally dismantling one of the largest icons in health today: the USDA Food Pyramid that we all learn in elementary school. He blames many of the pyramid's recommendations--6 to 11 servings of carbohydrates, all fats used sparingly--for much of the current wave of obesity. At first this may read differently than any diet book, but Willett also makes a crucial, rarely mentioned point about this icon: "The thing to keep in mind about the USDA Pyramid is that it comes from the Department of Agriculture, the agency responsible for promoting American agriculture, not from the agencies established to monitor and protect our health." It's no wonder that dairy products and American-grown grains such as wheat and corn figure so prominently in the USDA's recommendations.

Willett's own simple pyramid has several benefits over the traditional format. His information is up-to-date, and you won't find recommendations that come from special-interest groups. His ideas are nothing radical--if we eat more vegetables and complex carbohydrates (no, potatoes are not complex), emphasize healthy fats, and enjoy small amounts of a tremendous variety of food, we will be healthier. You'll find some surprises as well, such as doubts about the overall benefits of soy (unless you're willing to eat a pound and a half of tofu a day), and that nuts, with their "good" fat content, are a terrific snack. Relying on research rather than anecdotes, this is a solidly written nutritional guide that will show you the real story behind how food is digested, from the glycemic index for carbs to the wisdom of adding a multivitamin to your diet. Willett combines research with matter-of-fact language and a no-nonsense tone that turns academic studies into easily understandable suggestions for living. --Jill Lightner

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant and Extremely Practical.......2007-10-15

This book changed the way I cook and eat! I read it in 2003, and since then have incorporated many more fruits and vegetables into my diet. I sometimes joke with my friends that
we should get bracelets saying "WWWD"--that is, What Would Willett Do?, when
faced with decisions on what to eat. Finally, nutrition advice
based not on fads but on epidemiological data. Thank you Willett!

5 out of 5 stars Best guide to healthy eating.......2007-09-16

Willett's book isn't a fad diet book, but explains food and what it does for your body. I thought this book was very informative. It set some diet myths straight. There was a good overview of the food groups, the pros and cons of each, and what diseases or illnesses they helped or hurt. I thought the vitamin section was very good and surprisingly brief for that sort of thing.

5 out of 5 stars Good common sense advice on nutrition.......2007-08-13

I have been saying almsot nothing but good about this book to my friends and family for the last week or two. I read this book once and then had to read it again because it is packed with such good common sense advice which is backed up with explinations about major studies confirming the advice.

Willet starts out with nothing less then suggesting major changes to the food guide pyrimid. The next chapters delve into the reasons for these changes. He explains in more depth about the importance of maintaining a healthy weight, choosing carbs low on the glycemic index, the need for unsaturated fats in the diet, the importance of eating low fat protiens, and the need to eat many fruits and vegtables (not potatoes)daily. Much of the book seems to agree with the mediterranean diet and He refers a few times to the "seven countries study" done by Ancel Keys who was an early proponent of this diet. I was curious to see how the diet worked for Keys and found he lived to be 100 years old!

The book is a treasure and I will refer to it often in the future. One note, some of the recepies and ingredients in the back are difficult to prepare or hard to come by. But don't let this stop you from reading this book and making changes to your diet. It has inspired me to make changes to mine.

5 out of 5 stars Authoritative advice without any gimmicks.......2007-08-05

There's no shortage of "diet" books out there, so how do you choose the right one? The truth is, it's difficult. I've come to the conclusion that almost any diet can "work" (at least in the short term), because what they do is force you to think about what you're eating and motivate you to exercise. However, where gimmick diets fail is in changing your lifestyle.

This book is an entirely different breed of "diet" books, because it's not really a diet book at all. What it is is conservative, non-controversial, and authoritative advice regarding healthy eating. Nothing in this book is going to go out of style any time soon.

There's no gimmick here; it's not going to tell you that you can eat sausage all day and be healthy. It's going to tell you what you already know; eat more greens, veggies, fish, fruit, and whole grains. It's going to tell you that there's no secret to losing wait; eat fewer calories and exercise more. It's going to tell you that the knowledge of the glycemic index/load is useful for controlling your appetite by moderating blood sugar. It's going to explain that there's a big difference between good fats and bad. It's going to tell you that the Mediterranean-style diet is well known for being one of the healthiest in the world (and why).

I've actually read a couple dozen books on healthy eating. All of the others had a few good things to say, but had some sort of gimmick to sell the book. This book is more or less the intersection of all those other books. In the end, this is the best of the bunch and absolutely the one to get if you only want to read one book on healthy eating.

However, this book may not be for everyone. Some people may be put off by the conservative nature of this book. If you have special health concerns that aren't addressed by mainstream knowledge, or if you are the type of person that prefers to live on the bleeding edge, you may need to look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars A great way to understand your health.......2007-07-09

I very much enjoyed this book. I have spent my entire life on a diet but never understood the meaning behind diet rules and theories. This was a great read on nutrition and really helped me to understand the medical implications of the food choices we make. The author did a great job simplifying complex medical terms and provided a balanced thoughtful view on eating, drinking and being healthy.

    Book Description

Ten leading scholars of early American social history here examine the nature of work and labor in America from 1614 to 1820. The authors scrutinize work diaries, private and public records, and travelers' accounts. Subjects include farmers, farmwives, urban laborers, plantation slave workers, midwives, and sailors; locales range from Maine to the Caribbean and the high seas.

These essays recover the regimen that consumed the waking hours of most adults in the New World, defined their economic lives, and shaped their larger existence. Focusing on individuals as well as groups, the authors emphasize the choices that, over time, might lead to prosperity or to the poorhouse. Few people enjoyed sinecures, and every day brought new risks.

Stephen Innes introduces the collection by elucidating the prophetic vision of Captain John Smith: that the New World offered abundant reward for one's "owne industrie." Several motifs stand out in the essays. Family labor has begun to assume greater prominence, both as a collective work unit and as a collective economic unit whose members worked independently. Of growing interest to contemporary scholars is the role of family size and sex ratio in determining economic decision, and vice ersa. Work patterns appear to have been driven by the goal of creating surplus production for markets; perhaps because of a desire for higher consumption, work patterns began to intensify throughout the eighteenth century and led to longer work days with fewer slack periods. Overall, labor relations showed no consistent evolution but remained fluid and flexible in the face of changing market demands in highly diverse environments. The authors address as well the larger questions of American development and indicate the directions that research in this expanding field might follow.

When I bought this book I thought I would be getting a compilation of immortal lines spoken by the likes of Lucy Ricardo, Barney Fife and Alice Kramden. Instead I got the comments of Lucille Ball ("I tried to provide hope, faith and fun," p. 134), Don Knotts ("Some comedians are tight inside, but Andy Griffith is warm," p. 131) and Audrey Meadows ("Jackie Gleason was a vibrant character of a thousand lights and colors," p. 127). This isn't wisdom, folks: this is trite reminiscence. There is some wisdom to be found in this little book, but not much. Tonight I'm going to acquire some wisdom by watching "Leave it to Beaver" and tomorrow I'm going to return this book and ask for a refund.

                    Book Description

In JavaServer Pages 2.0, Sun has added new features that make it even easier to create dynamic, interactive Web pages in Java. These include a built-in expression language and a library of tags (the JSP Standard Tag Library) that facilitate creation of pages.

Sams Teach Yourself JavaServer Pages 2.0 in 24 Hours starts with the basics of JSP, and explains the expression language, JSTL, creating new tags and more. Each lesson builds on the previous one, giving you a full picture of JSP development. Later chapters describe how to incorporate XML, interface with larger Java applications, work with popular frameworks such as Struts, and more. The book includes Apache Tomcat, Sun's reference implementation of JSP, so you can start developing applications immediately.

A practical, task-oriented tutorial on installing, configuring, and administering the latest version of the industry's most popular Web server. Includes coverage of Apache 2.0, the most significant new version of Apache since it was first developed. Apache is the dominant Web server in use today. Written by a respected member of the Apache Software Foundation who is also skilled at understanding the problems new users face when using Apache. Sams Teach Yourself Apache 2 in 24 Hours covers the installation, configuration, and ongoing administration of the Apache Web server on Unix and Windows platforms. Using a hands-on, task-oriented format, it concentrates on the most popular features and common quirks of the server. The book is divided in two parts. The first part helps the reader build, configure, and get started with Apache. After completing these chapters the reader will be able to start, stop, and monitor the Web server. He also will be able to serve both static content and dynamic content (via CGIs), customize the logs, and restrict access to certain parts of the Web server. The second part explains in detail the architecture of Apache and how to extend the server via third-party modules like PHP and Tomcat. It covers server performance and scalability, content management, and how to set up a secure server with SSL. Daniel Lopez is a senior software engineer with Covalent technologies, the leading provider of solutions for Apache. He is a member of the Apache Software Foundation, he speaks regularly at open source and Apache conferences, and he is the author of the Comanche configuration tool for Apache, which gives him a daily exposure to the problems new users face taking their first steps with Apache. 2 out of 5 stars Not useful as a learning guide.......2007-08-19

I picked this book up hoping it would clarify some of the documentation that's freely available from Apache, but in most cases it was not helpful. It simply is not well-written and does not flow well, especially as a 'Teach Yourself' book. Disappointing...

                    5 out of 5 stars super.......2007-03-08

Thanks a lot, we are very happy to have this book in our library!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners and worthwhile to buy!.......2003-10-20

Although the title of the book is Apache 2, and it contains full information about it, I learnt from it all the basic things you need to know related to web servers. Being a complete beginner, I learnt not just about Apache, but also about what are SSL, PHP, CGI's, Proxy servers and Tomcat through the book. Everything is explained in plain english and easy to understand. Each chapter has an introductory section that makes it much easier to understand. It's like having the author by your side guiding you.

2 out of 5 stars Not a good book for beginners.......2003-08-04

This book covers a wide scope of Apache configurations and operation mechanisms, though so few practical examples present. If you want to gain deep insight into Apache 2, go to another book.

4 out of 5 stars Great web server introduction.......2003-08-02

Setting up my first Apache server, I found this book to be an invaluable aid. It discusses Apache's range of capabilities, explains the internal processes involved in serving Web sites, and illustrates typical configuration options. The explanations are simple, straightforward, and organized, and the writing style is encouraging. If I have any complaint, it is that I ran into more build/installation snags with several third-party Apache add-ons than the book predicted. Your mileage will no doubt vary.
