Book Description

A sweet little cat drives a man to insanity and murder....

The grim death known as the plague roams a masquerade ball dressed in red....

A dwarf seeks his final revenge on his captors....

A sister calls to her beloved twin from beyond the grave....

Prepare yourself. You are about to enter a world where you will be shocked, terrified, and, though you'll be too scared to admit it at first, secretly thrilled. Here are four tales -- The Black Cat, The Masque of the Red Death, Hop-Frog, and The Fall of the House of Usher -- by the master of the macabre, Edgar Allan Poe. The original tales have been ever so slightly dismembered -- but, of course, Poe understood dismemberment very well. And he would shriek in ghoulish delight at Gris Grimly's gruesomely delectable illustrations that adorn every page. So prepare yourself. And keep the lights on.

4 out of 5 stars Edgar 5 Grimsley 3 .......2007-10-21

Edgar Allen Poe, the master of macabre has his goolish tales softened by Grimsley's illustrations. Poe's tales are a creepy pleasure but Grimesley's drawings, though compitent, are simply too cute for anyone beyond the age of ten. That being said, what a great way to introduce a young reader to one of our most revered literary giants.

5 out of 5 stars Grim Irony.......2007-10-20

I encountered this book in a teacher's book shelf and was intrigued by its author's name, Egar Allan Poe, who I had heard little about up until that pint, besides he was a great writer, and had a very tragic life.
The stories themselves were worth the price of the book alone, but the illustrations were breathtaking even more so; "The Masque of Red Death is one of my favorite Poe stories, and the depictions of Prospero's castle and its grim visitor were almost frighteningly detailed.
Over all, between the stories and the illustrations,I give this book 4.9 stars, my only complaint is that the stories ended too soon.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning and Terrifying.......2007-08-22

This book made me a die-hard Gris Grimly fan! The original Poe stories are only very gently edited (for length, not for content) and the illustrations add a wonderfully frightening edge. This book is shelved in our Teen section for good reason (the final illustration for "The Masque of the Red Death" might be the bloodiest illustration I've ever seen), but I heartily recommend this book for high schoolers, reluctant readers, adults, students who are having a hard time getting into the classics, or anybody else with a love of all things dark and spooky :)

For the young ones, check out another Gris Grimly book called "Boris And Bella".. all of the fun, none of the gore (well almost..)

5 out of 5 stars the tales of mystery and madness.......2005-11-05

this book is called the tales of mystery and madness. This book is like a comic. But the story that i read is about a man who lived a normal life with a wife and a cat.The cat followed him every were he went, until one night he came home drunk and tried tograb the cat but the cat bit him so he got angry and poked the cat eye out. Then the cat never followed him again so he got angry and hung the cat. After that he went to the bar to get a drink and then he saw a cat who looked like the old cat that he hung.So his wife came to the bar and had bought the cat,so then the cat started to follow him every where he went just like the last cat did. Then he got so angry causethe cat would not leave him alone. So he took the cat to the basement and tried to kill it but his wife stoped him from killing the cat.So instead of killing the cat he killed his wife and buried her in the walls with the cat.Couple weeks later the police came knocking on his door,he had open the door and fast as they could the police rushed in and started to search his house but they found nothing until the police had found the basement and started to search but yet they found nothing. But all of a sudden a noise came threw the walls,he tried to cover the wall that he buried her but it was no good the police pushed him out the way and started tobang rhe walls.Wall colapsed and there stood the corpse bride with the cat on her head.

3 out of 5 stars Not a children's book.......2005-09-14

** SPOILER WARNING**
Um... I read only the first story of the book -- the Black Cat. The story is so dark, so psychologically troubling, that I don't think I will read it to my 9-year-old. I mean, the narrator's butchering of his wife and his joy of getting away with it were so realistically portrayed that it almost reads like Poe is writing out his psychotic fantasy in glee. Although the narrator did get arrested in the end, the story tantalizes so closely (and effectively) the darker side of psychology that I probably won't let my child read it until she is much older.

5 out of 5 stars Oh my gosh...........2006-02-19

Okay, first I'd just like to say that I'm not sure if this is really for ages 9-12 like it says....

Now that that's out of the way, let me just say that this is one of the best books I've ever read. The stories are good, Poe always is, but the pictures are what makes this a winner. Not only do they make the stories a lot more understandable (this can sometimes be a problem with Poe) they are purely amazing works of art. Gris Grimly is a genius ( go to madcreator.com) and needs to win a Nobel Prize or something. His drawings capture terror, romance, comedy and grotesqueness all equally well. Buy this book, it will change your life. I'm serious.

The Black Cat: This story is a classic Poe, but the mood is captured so much better with Grimly's art. It will creep you out.

The Masque of the Red Death: I don't know about you, but I never quite "got" this story till I read it here. This makes it terrifying and blackly amusing at the same time, and will get you thinking.

Hop-Frog: This story is awesome! Even if you don't get this particular book, read Poe's original story. It's great.

The Fall of the House of Usher: Rather odd. This was made into a movie I think.... The story is weird, but the pictures will have you riveted.

And if all else fails, buy the book simply for the raven picture in the front page. Wow.

      Book Description

The twentieth century saw significant increases in both life expectancy and retirement rates-changes that have had dramatic impacts on nearly every aspect of society and the economy. Forecasting future trends in health and retirement rates, as we must do now, requires investigation of such long-term trends and their causes.

To that end, this book draws on new data-an extensive longitudinal survey of Union Army veterans born between 1820 and 1850-to examine the factors that affected health and labor force participation in nineteenth-century America. Contributors consider the impacts of a variety of conditions-including social class, wealth, occupation, family, and community-on the morbidity and mortality of the group. The papers investigate and address a number of special topics, including the influence of previous exposure to infectious disease, migration, and community factors such as lead in water mains. They also analyze the roles of income, health, and social class in retirement decisions, paying particular attention to the social context of disability.

Economists and historians who specialize in demography or labor, as well as those who study public health, will welcome the unique contributions offered by this book, which offers a clearer view than ever before of the workings and complexities of life, death, and labor during the nineteenth century.

                Book Description

This compelling collection of stories explores the powerful impact that music has in our lives—especially in the lives of teens. Each story strikes a new note: Ron Koertge introduces us to the boys in the band—the marching band; Joseph Bruchac contributes a Native American boy with no rhythm whatsoever; Jennifer Armstrong writes about what was perhaps the first battle of the bands—during the American Civil War; and David Levithan offers up a love song that speaks powerfully to an unintended audience. But while each story is different, they combine into harmonic song of praise—for the depths music can reach in us, and the power it has to bind us together.

                Book Description

Hirohito and his Mickey Mouse watch, Goofy and Donald as our "Goodwill Ambassadors:" Disney Discourse is an interdisciplinary examination of the founder and his empire. These essays use an interdisciplinary approach to read through Disney's domestic cultural production "innocent" national icons, as well as theme parks, cartoons and television to analyze the global impact of American popular culture, the politics of Disney, and the complex reception Disney productions have received around the world.

The Disney corporation's ever-increasing visibility the opening of Euro Disney and new stores in malls and vast influence over global culture demands critical attention not only in film and television studies, but in international diplomacy, architecture, economics and other related fields. Disney Discourse consolidates the best of the current work on Disney and provides a representative sample of past analyses of the Disney empire.

Contributors: Julianne Burton-Carvajal, Lisa Cartwright, Brian Goldfarb, Richard deCordova, Douglas Gomery, David Kunzle, Jon Lewis, Moya Luckett, Richard Neupert, Susan Ohmer, José Piedra, Mitsuhiro Yoshimoto, Alexander Wilson.

5 out of 5 stars Complicates Assumptions about Disney.......2000-11-22

Disney Discourse is a substantial contribution to the field of Disney Studies. Smoodin's collection offers a range of reactions to the different Disneys that exist: television and film, theme parks, retail, and so forth. Furthermore, this interdisciplinary work is structured in three useful ways. First, it offers some representative materials from Disney's "golden age" that tend to praise Disney (both the man and the corporation). Second, many of the essays consider the reception to Disney. Three, the book is divided into four separate categories that provide an overview of possible approaches to the study of Disney.

As with any collection, not all the essays are of equal analytic strength. There are many good essays, however, particularl in the the sections entitled Cultural Production and Reception. Smoodin's own essay, "How to Read Walt Disney" is, in my opinion, worth the price of the book alone. Even essays which seem more grounded in personal reaction than critique have their worth; they demonstrate the investment individuals have in Disney as a site of debate.

Overall, the result of the book's conscientious structure is to complicate any easy binaries--taken as a collection, Disney Discourse refuses to unreflectively praise Disney or, equally problematic, simply critique Disney. Instead, Smoodin's book offers Disney as a site of investigation, of exploration, and of analysis. Indeed, Disney Discourse might be better renamed Disney Discourses in order to reflect the multiple ways people have approached Disney. Though not all the essays are equally strong, the book is a "must-have" for both serious scholars and Disney enthusiasts alike.

4 out of 5 stars Nostalgia washes us away.......2002-02-18

This Chunovic's book is a reminder. So.....
After watching the series a few times, all I can say is I agree
with Ecclesiastes ( remember the Kohelet/Ecclesiastes, a Bible
guy, the purported King Solomon ? )-"Is not the eye surfeited with
seeing, and the ear sated with hearing ?"
For me- it is. Maybe the best one could do is to be grateful for the gift and pay homage.
                  So, thanx:
                  - for characters that are not "larger than life", but stand for
                  life's largeness
                  - for the message that ordinary life already *is* a mythic one
                  - for making friends with mortality, whilst eschewing both
morbidity and shallow New-Ageish dull mantras/stereotypes
                  - for presenting, yet not succumbing to tedium vitae
                  - for the most sophisticated TV show kids & analphabets
                  could enjoy
                  - for being life-affirming & not taking an easy route to existential
despair, quick fixes and loopholes ( at least, for the most part )
                  - for, while being a celebration of life, not lying on human condition
                  - for giving a cast of average actors ( a couple of old grizzlies excluded ) the chance to say these were the best years of their lives;and the entire crew, from producers to actors and stunt men that they, being good women & men as they are, took part in something that was way beyond "good"; something that was great ( grand but not pompous )
                  - for rekindling innumerable sparks in innumerable viewers into, at least, fleeting flickers
                  - for helping people grow in wisdom & compassion
                  - for being .......hmm, what's the most encompassing word ?..
                  ............life's grandeur embodied

As a mega Northern Exposure fan I thought I knew all there was to know about the show and it's quirky characters. This book filled in the blanks. It was a fun and nostalgic trip back to the days of the television series that made millions of us wilderness wannabees! The personal interviews made me feel as if I know the stars personally. The book took me behind the scenes and gave me a wonderful insight of what it really takes to produce a T.V. series, and make it work.
