Book Description

Flashback to 1989 with your favorite characters from Queer as Folk in this new line of books based on the record-breaking Showtime series hailed as "wonderful" (Newsweek) and "groundbreaking" (People)!

Before they were grown men working and playing in Pittsburgh, Brian Kinney and Michael Novotny were high-school friends dealing with bullies, secret crushes, and their emerging sexuality. Step back in time with two of Queer as Folk's hottest characters in the first book in this provocative new series.

Every Nine Seconds

On the eve of Brian Kinney's eighteenth birthday, he and his best friend, Michael Novotny, celebrate a bond that could link them forever if their future paths don't separate them for good. In a few short weeks Brian, the seductive soccer star, will leave for college, where he'll be free to explore the adult pursuits in which he's only dabbled in high school. Michael is destined for a more sedate life in community college while living at home with his eccentric mom. But before their lives diverge, a hot new club will open, they'll go to the prom "stag" together, and family strife will turn their world upside down. Brian and Michael still have some unforgettable times to share before graduation ushers in the next stages of their lives.

Not the best writing I've ever read...a little bit of fantasy for those of us who speculate about the origins of the characters on the show.

i'm a newly obsessed qaf fan, only since january 2006. (yes, i know the series ended last summer, thank you!) and of course, since i am watching all 5 seasons in a matter of months, i am obsessed with devouring anything and everything about this show, its characters, and its actors.

although i enjoyed having a backstory to how brian and mikey met, and why they are the way they are, the book is written in a very simplistic way. like i said, you can find better stuff online for free, but it was decent enough. the sequel, "never tear us apart" absolutely SUCKED. focuses on mikey and brian after they both go away to different colleges, and how their friendship changes. talk about a yawnfest; i tried to skip ahead to the parts about brian because mikey and his captain astro fetish just doesn't do it for me. i ordered both a couple of weeks ago, and while i finished "every nine seconds" in a night, "never tear us apart" is still dog-eared about 1/3 of the way through. don't know if i'll ever finish it...

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read.......2006-02-18

I have never seen the show and opened the book based soley on the back cover copy. I really enjoyed it and will read the others and also will likely watch the dvds now. It was a nice, fun book.

1 out of 5 stars I expected so much more.......2005-12-24

As a huge fan of the show, I expected much more from these books. One reviewer describes them as "glorified fanfiction" and I could not agree more, unless the word "bad" were included. This book reminded me of drivel penned by a 13 year old girl.

In the book, Brian and Michael experience the fun and the problems of the end of their senior year in high school. Events including Prom and Graduation occur, and you get a small look into the worlds of the characters.

I would recommend it to anyone who merely dabbles in the show and who needs something to read at the beach where they can't bring their computers along and read quality fanfiction. Be careful, though, not to take anything in it as fact and not to judge the show on it.

Any true fan of the show will be at best annoyed- but more likely disgusted- by the startling lack of insight into the characters and many discrepancies with the show. The characters are barely recognizable- at best they are underdeveloped shadows of themselves.

Brian and Michael's Prom is appalling- it makes a mockery of the Season 1 finale, and the scene the liquor store is the final nail in the coffin of this overrated tripe.

Don't waste your money or your time on this bastardization of the show. Buy the DVDs instead.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for any QAF Fan.......2005-10-27

I read all 3 books in this series in a week. For anyone who knows me that really fast. I'm not much of a reader but I couldn't put these books down. I loved how the authors stayed so true to the characters in the show. Although there were a few tiny differences, you would have to be a hard core QAF fan to notice (example- brian's bracelet). I would recommend to anyone that wants to read these book to watch the show first. I feel that seeing the show first gave me a better feel for the characters and made me enjoy the books more. Oh yea, and coming from a straight female's perspective, the sex scenes are pretty hot!

    Book Description

After the Strike places two important episodes in American labor history, the 1894 Pullman strike and the rise of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, into a new perspective--the century-long development of union organizing and labor-management relations in the Pullman Company. Connecting the stories of Pullman car builders and porters takes us to the heart of critical questions about American society: What created job segregation by race and gender? What role did such segregation play in shaping the labor movement? Susan Eleanor Hirsch illuminates, as have few others, the relationship between labor organizing and the racial and sexual discrimination practiced by both employers and unions. Because the Pullman Company ran the sleeping-car service for American railroads and was a major manufacturer of railcars, its workers were involved in virtually every wave of union organizing from the 1890s to the 1940s. In exploring what the years of struggle meant for the men and women of the Pullman Company, After the Strike also reveals the factors that determined the limited success and narrow vision of most American unions.

      Book Description

This is a book about probabilities in the stock market. Specifically this book covers the entire history of the New York Stock Exchange (1789-1997) as well as the Japanese Nikkei Stock Index (1949-1997). It identifies 15 long and short-term recurrent cycles, and the types of patterns which unfold in each. It explains not only WHEN a market is likely to form an important crest or trough, but also HOW that cycle will unfold. It outlines the bullish and bearish phases of each cycle, tells which is operative at any given point in time, and how to tie that cycle in with the larger cycles for various investing or trading strategies. The 25 carefully constructed tables alone make this an invaluable resource for traders and investors alike.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Guide to Understanding Stock Market Cycles.......2002-06-20

Many traders and investors do not pay attention to cycles in stock prices. After reading this book, they will change their tune. Cycles should play a major role in your stock market arsenal and this book clearly lays out the case in excrutiating detail.

This book is Volume I of a 5-part series on " The Ultimate Book on Stock Market Timing" by Raymond Merriman:

Volume I. Cycles and Patterns in Indexes
Volume II. Geocosmic Correlations to Investment Cycles
Volume III. Geocosmic Correlations to Trading Cycles
Volume IV. Geocosmic Correlations to Short-Term Trading (not yet completed)
Volume V. Technical Tools and Trading Cycles (not yet completed)

This 227-page 16 chapter book provides solid evidence that cycles exist in stock prices. The book documents the cycles and patterns with 5 graphs and charts, 18 figures and diagrams, and 25 tables.

Merriman begins by explaining cycle characteristics -- definition of a cycle, troughs and crests, time band, and distortions. Then he covers the three basic categories of cycles (primary, long-term, and short-term) followed by their subcycles known as phases. Next, Merriman covers trends and teh criteria for identifying bull and bear markets.

Long-term cycles (80-year, 54-year Kondratieff) and their subcycles are then reviewed with examples. One chapter is devoted solely to the 18-year cycle in stock prices because that time interval occurs frequently. Multiples of the this cycle -- 36-year, 54-year, 72-year and 90-year -- are covered as they also appear over time in the past 200 years or so. Merriman provides a table of 18-year cycles from 1797 to 1990 showing the cycle highs and lows, accompanied by 12 charts illustrating the cycle high and low points.

Merriman then delves into the subcycles of the 18-year cycle with a detailed discussion of the eleven cycle periods from 1797 to 1990. He then moves into the well-known 4-year cycle pinpointing all of these cycles since 1896 with the month and year of the cycle troughs. This is further supported with a table indicating every 4-year cycle trough, crest, and trough; months up and down; low, high, and low of cycle; % up and % down. All the cycles in the table were grouped in terms of the larger 18-year cycle. The structure of the cycle is reviewed using 27 graphs of each 4-year cycle pinpointing the high and low poits. Additional information is provided on the two- and three- phase 4-year cycles and subcycles, and a table showing the 4-year cycle from 1895 and the proximity to the U.S. Presidential Election. Details on the 22.5 months cycle are also included.

There is a 33-page chapter on all the cycles evident in the Japan Nikkei Stock Index. Technical analysis is the title of a chapter that deals with investing vs. trading, and market timing vs. buy-and-hold. Included is a table showing the 4-year cycle crests in U.S. stock prices and the length ot time needed to get back to the crest.

In summary, Merriman provides a truly enlightening and useful guide to identifying and using cycles to time the market with increased precision. Students of the market will find that this book offers another important tool to conquering the market. Cycle review should be part of every trader's and investor's methodology, otherwise optimal results may not be obtained.

2 out of 5 stars Authors needed to do further research.......2007-04-02

I wanted to be able to say that this is a great book, but based on the misinformation regarding "Silent Night," it certainly doesn't deserve a good recommendation.

There are seven pages about the world's best-loved Christmas carol, but the authors of this book, Albert and Shirley Menendez, didn't do their homework. They claim that the story of "Silent Night" begins in 1818. Wrong! The story begins in 1816 because that's when Joseph Mohr wrote his six-stanza German-language poem, not 1818 as claimed by the authors. It was in 1818 that the music was added to Mohr's poem.

The authors describe Oberndorf, where the carol was first sung, as "a lovely mountainous village." If you visit Oberndorf, I suppose you would see a mountain in the distance if there were a ten story building where you could look out from the top. The town is on a river plain. When they built the "Silent Night" chapel in the mid-20th century, they had to truck in loads of dirt to build a hill.

The book goes on to say that the church organ was broken. Historians have found no records to back up this claim.

Further on, the authors come to John Freeman Young, the man who translated three of Mohr's German-language verses into the English verses that we know. They say his translation was done in 1863. Wrong! "Silent Night" is in the book "Carols For Christmas Tide," edited by J. Freeman Young and published in 1859. The information is out there, but it takes a good researcher to find it.

The authors add a fourth English verse to John Young's three English verses. This is not the first time that this verse has been erroneously attributed to Bishop Young. The website Hymns and Carols of Christmas dot-com has a picture of the page from John Young's 1859 book for anyone who wants to see the accurate information.

"Joy to the World: Sacred Christmas Songs Through the Ages" is set up so that you can read a bit here and a bit there. It's a nice size for reading on a bus or plane. Unfortunately you don't know how much is accurate. Did the authors do their homework on other portions of the book?

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful tribute to Jeremy Brett........2006-01-30

For many of us, the late Jeremy Brett supplanted Basil Rathbone as the definitive Sherlock Holmes. Whereas Rathbone faithfully represented - in a somewhat Jack Webb/Joe Friday manner - Holmes as the master detective, Brett added nuances to the character that were both faithful to the original yet bold and contemporary. That he did this while struggling with manic-depression and degenerative heart disease is a tribute both to his skill as an actor and to his courage as a human being.

Is love possible from a distance, without ever having actually known or met the object of one's love? The worlds of literature and film answer "yes" to this question, and many of us do indeed love both Sherlock Holmes and Jeremy Brett, along with Dr. Watson and his eminent portrayers, David Burke and Edward Hardwicke. David Stuart Davies' tribute to Brett, Burke, Hardwicke and all those associated with the Granada TV series is truly a labor of love.

Based on personal interviews with Brett and many others associated with the series, this book gives insight into Jeremy Brett the actor and the man, as well as his co-stars and supporting actors. There is much substance here, as well as the delightful "trivia" of how and why things were done or not done, and of the contributions of the actors to various nuances of the stories. This book is thus - for me - the Bible of the Granada Holmes series.

But it is not an uncritical, fawning tribute. Errors are acknowledged and lamented, as in the less-than-sterling version of "The Hound of the Baskervilles," or the questionable decision to film the later episodes when Brett's health was in serious decline.

But if you are a fan of Brett's Sherlock Holmes, this book is a must, even if somewhat pricey and hard to find. It is rapidly becoming a collector's item, and get it while you can.

5 out of 5 stars Listen to the thoughts of those who were there.......2005-05-06

For anyone who appreciates Jeremy Brett, free from sensationalism and determined by fact and friendship, this book is for you. The pages document what life was like during production of the Granada series, and first hand situations are recounted by those who worked side by side with Mr. Jeremy Brett to help create a masterpiece for television.

Especially satisfying to read are the accounts of Edward Hardwicke, who provides anecdotes and thoughts for every chapter. A real cameraderie existed off camera between these two men, enhancing their performance for the world to see.

Mr. David Stuart Davies presents us with a simplified version of the fluctuating madness of Jeremy Brett's affliction, and the reader cannot help but hold up their hands and applaud the strength and courage of this dearly missed actor.

          5 out of 5 stars A Great Behind-the-Scenes Book.......2004-04-12

If you're a fan of both Jeremy Brett and Granada's Sherlock Holmes series, then this book is a must-read.

As the author stresses, this book is not a biography. Only about a page is spared to very briefly give on overview of Jeremy Brett's life before he became the definitive Holmes.

The book is a WONDERFUL behind-the-scenes look at the Granada Holmes production. It talks about each of the 40+ productions and gives interesting tidbits about what went on during the filming of certain episodes. If you like learning about those type of things, this book will certainly hold your interest.

One of the best things about the book is that the author himself had met and interviewed Jeremy Brett several times. This allows for many long direct quotes from Brett himself.

Thankfully, Jeremy Brett turned out to be a nice person in real life, seems to have gotten along well with co-stars, and cared greatly about his role of Holmes. Unfortunately, as Jeremy Brett became more ill with heart failure and manic depression, things with the Granada productions began to sour. This book does a good job of discussing those years in Brett's life.

Overall, it is a caring tribute to a genius of an actor, the Granada series, and provides a lot of interesting tidbits.

Jeremy Brett's portrayal of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective is widely recognised as the best yet seen. Before his untimely death in 1995, Brett had made the part his own, all the time battling against the manic depression which had plagued him for many years. Bending the Willow' examines how this brilliant actor channelled the demons of his debilitating illness into his iridescent portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. In this fascinating and perceptive study, David Stuart Davies draws on the many conversations he had with Jeremy Brett and key people involved with the Granada Television series and the stage play The Secret of Sherlock Holmes'. The result is the first detailed assessment of all of Jeremy Brett's performances as Sherlock Holmes. Fully illustrated with more than fifty photographs, some never before published, Bending the Willow' is an important addition to the libraries of Sherlock Holmes followers, and Jeremy Brett fans alike.

Ever wonder about the man who portrayed the Great Detective so well on the Granada series of Sherlock Holmes - who was Jeremy Brett?

'Bending the Willow' addresses these questions by telling us about Jeremy Brett - his background and influences - and most particularly by focussing on his years spent on the television series and the difficulties he had then, and throughout his career, with debilitating bouts of manic depression and poor health which continued until his death in 1995.

          5 out of 5 stars Jeremy Brett's genius.......2002-07-23

This book gives the reader an unique perspective into Jeremy Brett's talent and genius. His portrayal of the master sleuth is one of the best in the world even though his own nature was the sort to never "cross the street" to meet Sherlock Holmes if he were a real person. Brett's acting abilities are partially displayed to its true immensity in this book. Finally, a book that gives Jeremy Brett the credit he so rightfully deserved and deserves.

Calabash Press will be reissuing BENDING THE WILLOW in a new and updated edition in January, 2001. This book is a moving and informative account of the making of the landmark television series and also describes the difficulties of keeping the quality of the series consistent over ten years through management changes (always the bane of film production) and the declining health of star Jeremy Brett.

Television is still considered a 'second class' medium, so this wonderful series has not received the praise it deserves. Not a single one of the filmmakers were ever awarded for their work, an amazing omission. The best episodes of this show are fine films in their own right, and one does not have to be a Sherlock Holmes fan to enjoy them.

BENDING THE WILLOW is well worth adding to any library of film production books and is also of great human interest.

5 out of 5 stars Brett Actually IS Sherlock Holmes!.......1998-03-21

The author captures Brett as few Sherlockians (people who study the Holmes stories) knew him. His brilliant early performances contrast his later portrayals as his manic depression (and the mis-prescribed medications destroys his body) takes over his mind. The book covers every aspect of Brett as Sherlock Holmes but does not delve into his earlier life or roles. A MUST HAVE for all Sherlockians everywhere, I re-read it often. Photos provide a record of the struggle Jeremy had with his weight, depression and the dangerous drugs used to manage his mental state. More like Holmes than he probably realized in the beginning, the two men became intertwined forever. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

              Book Description

Reports are key to a successful software application. It doesn't matter how efficiently the users enter data, how much information the system can store, or how many complicated calculations the system can process if there's no way to see the final outcome. In this reference, software developers are shown how to use every nook and cranny of report writers. Included are fundamentals of using the VFP Report Writer correctly such as starting the report wizard, invoking the report designer, and report bands. Advanced tips are provided as well, including nesting data groups and creating variables and calculations.
