Book Description
A plain-English primer on crime scene investigation that's a must for fans of CSI or Patricia Cornwell
Since the O. J. Simpson case, popular interest in forensic science has exploded: CBS's CSI has 16 to 26 million viewers every week, and Patricia Cornwell's novels featuring a medical examiner sleuth routinely top bestseller lists, to cite just a few examples. Now, everyone can get the lowdown on the science behind crime scene investigations. Using lots of fascinating case studies, forensics expert Dr. D. P. Lyle clues people in on everything from determining cause and time of death to fingerprints, fibers, blood, ballistics, forensic computing, and forensic psychology. With its clear, entertaining explanations of forensic procedures and techniques, this book will be an indispensable reference for mystery fans and true crime aficionados everywhere-and even includes advice for people interested in forensic science careers.
D. P. Lyle, MD (Laguna Hills, CA), is a practicing cardiologist who is also a forensics expert and mystery writer. He runs a Web site that answers writers' questions about forensics, dplylemd.com, and is the author of Murder and Mayhem: A Doctor Answers Medical and Forensic Questions for Writers, as well as several mystery novels. John Pless, MD, is Professor Emeritus of Pathology at Indiana University School of Medicine and former President of the National Association of Medical Examiners.
Customer Reviews:
Great information, easy to read.......2007-09-04
I'm writing a romantic suspense. I used this book the first day I received it. A great reference, easy to understand and non-forensics-person-friendly.
Really good!.......2006-04-01
This book caught my eye in the library and I plan on buying a copy for my own shelves. It makes an excellent, basic reference book. But,I have many problems with the editing of this book, particularly toward the end (pages 246 and 254); unfortunately, that happens in many, many books: a lazy editor reads half or two-thirds of the work and thinks, this is pretty good, and then drops the entire matter. I have found, as an editor myself, that the second half of a book is usually of poorer quality than the first half. Nevertheless, as a reference, it is a great jumping-off point, if you are so inclined.
Helpful and interesting.......2006-02-28
I am using tis book frequently for reference in my quest to write a series of mysteries. It has been very helpful.
Great starting reference.......2005-03-01
As with all the "for Dummies" books, Forensics for Dummies is a great, quick reference and a wonderful starting point for anyone interested in the field. Written by a doctor and full of information that will surely entice anyone who is a fan of crime investigation shows, the book is laid out well and progresses through the entire method used by forensic scientists.
However, this book is only a starting point for anyone seriously interested in pursuing a career in forenics. It makes a handy reference for writers, as well, but those who are interested in making their crime-oriented stories come to life would do well to find another source for in-depth information.
EDGAR AWARD NOMINEE!!!!!.......2005-02-12
"Forensics for Dummies" has been nominated for an Edgar Award. This is no surprise as it is the very best reference published.
This book will answer all of your questions and entertain you every step of the way!
Book Description
During the twentieth century as a whole, the United States has been a reference point for industrialized economies around the world. This volume examines the American influence on two of the most important and dynamic economies in the so-called boom years of the post-war period (1950-73), the West German and the Japanese. Contributions to this volume analyze five different business sectors which played an important role as engines of economic growth and also in the development of the consumer society in both countries: automobiles, electrical engineering and electronics, synthetic fibers and rubber, consumer chemicals and retail trade. The paired case studies examine the process of introducing new technology and management methods in each company and industry with respect to the American influence. They look at the possible Americanization across a wide variety of functions, including R&D, production, sales and marketing, HR and finance. The book shows that the American models led to a transformation of existing production and management systems which, subsequently became the core of the successful West German and Japanese models in the 1970s and 80s. German and Japanese Business in the Boom Years makes an important contribution to the debate on Americanization from a historical and comparative perspective and is essential reading for students and researchers of business and economic history.

Book Description
Modern attitudes to work are closely interwoven with the ways in which people think about the temporal organization of their lives. In this important book, the authors examine the relations between work and time and explore the possibilities of developing new and more flexible working patterns.Drawing on interviews with employees who have chosen to reduce their working hours from 40 to between 20 and 30 per week, the authors identify two categories of workers: first, the "time conformists" who see nothing unusual in their shorter working time and tend to fill their extra free time with familiar activities; and second, the "time pioneers". "Time pioneers" are people who strive to realize their ideas of time both at work and in their everyday private lives and succeed in introducing more flexibility into their working time. The authors argue that "time pioneers" display as much - if not more - motivation, willingness and commitment to their work than "time conformists". But in order to avoid becoming appropriated by the rigid working hours imposed by some employers - who may not be easily persuaded to depart from the prevailing cultural paradigm of the employment society - they develop their own ideas of how to organize their work.Time Pioneers is a significant and topical contribution to debates about the role of work in modern society.

Customer Reviews:
witty, hilarious, educated.......2003-10-07
Finally a book that begins to bridge the gap between parents and children! Grownups will roar, children will laugh, have fun and learn. There are a couple of exceptions (for parents only) but the drawings are universally appealing and the verses, based on history, pop culture, and literature are, in a word..... sophisticated!
TALENT, TALENT, TALENT.......1997-07-29
Whether it is Oprah Winfrey, Alligator Commentator or Lorena Bobbitt, Penile Amputator, Noel Miller gives the reader much more value than the minimal cost of this amusing book. This publication will amuse your friends, family, and dinner party guests for years to come. It is a classic! I am sure that the author's work will far surpass the fame of the Blue Dog. Louisiana should be proud of this great combination of art and poetry
HOW TO RATE AN ALLIGATOR?.......1997-02-11
I like the drawings very much--they are fresh, clever, and
amusing caricatures of more or less famous people seen as
alligators. The poems are wonderful--original works of wit,
which complement the drawings but go beyond them in subtlety
and humor. Good book!

George Gershwin: His Life and Work
ASIN: 0275981118 |
Book Description
George Gershwin pioneered the crossover from Broadway musicals to concert audiences, culminating in what is arguably America's greatest opera, Porgy and Bess. In William G. Hyland's new biography, Gershwin's personality and music are reexamined. Hyland illustrates how the composer's craftsmanship was criticized and his music was relegated to the status of "lowbrow" for decades, until the relatively recent appreciation of his achievements. Yet for all of his artistic brilliance, Gershwin was vulnerable and discontented in his personal life. Hyland reveals both the man and his creations, revealing how Gershwin became the first composer to apply popular music to classical forms, how his work reflected the turmoil of America in the Jazz Age, and how, despite his fame, he never achieved the happiness and contentment a genius of his stature deserved. This is a fascinating new biography that no Gershwin fan--and no music fan--should be without.
Customer Reviews:
Hyland's George Gershwin.......2006-01-27
I ordered this book because I've always liked Gershwin's music & happened to catch the last part of the film Rhapsody in Blue on Turner Movie Classics recently. The book does an adequate job of covering Gershwin's composing career, and indeed most of the chapters are titled according to the major composition discussed. If one is looking for in-depth information about Gershwin himself, his relationships, his family & his interests & activities outside music, the book is less satisfying. For example, one might assume from reading this book that his younger brother Arthur died in infancy as he is not mentioned except for his birthdate. Arthur actually lived to an old age, married, had kids & composed music himself. What relationship he & George had is unknown. Similarly, while Ira's wife Leonore had a part in George's life, she appears haphazardly throughout the book and little about her relationship with George is explored. George was also a painter but that is only tangentially mentioned. There is so much more that could fill out a broader, more in-depth picture of Gershwin. One could also wish for better editing to remove grammar errors & smooth out the repetitious use of some phrases as well as the jerky transitions from one subject to the next. The author's extensive research is evident & the endnotes at each chapter useful. For someone interested in Gershwin's growth as a composer, the book does a creditable job of documenting the major compositions & music events in the composer's life. For more about the man himself, readers must look elsewhere.
Scrupulously researched, but unfair to Goddard.......2004-07-20
Do we need another new biography of Gershwin? The author makes no strong claims to having written an important book. His introduction is so modest that you get the impression writing this book is a way to fill up the empty hours of his retirement. (He is 75, so no spring chicken.) That said, GEORGE GERSHWIN is scrupulously researched and makes claims for Gershwin's continuing stature within the field of music that pique the interest. Hyland's style isn't really a style per se, but it's serviceable and only gets in the way of his meaning occasionally.
I found Hyland's animus against the film star Paulette Goddard a bit puzzling. Is it because she was married (to Charlie Chaplin) when she conducted her affair with Gershwin? Hyland says that she is "not a reliable witness" as though this were a damning thing to say about someone's character (perhaps for a biographer it is, but for the general public? I don't know). She seems to have brought Gershwin some sexual pleasure and distraction from the illness that eventually killed him, but to hear Hyland tell it, it's almost as though her lying about dates done him in. Give a girl a break, William Hyland! Other than this lack of gallantry I enjoyed the book from beginning to end.
George Gershwin: A New Biography.......2004-01-12
I almost didn't finish this biography. The earliest part of the book, given over to a recounting of Gershwin's background and youth, is so stilted and so badly edited that I almost threw it against the wall. There are numerous misprints or typos. For example, lyricist Irving Caesar's last name is spelled three different ways on ONE page, and then the same three different ways again a few pages later. Didn't anyone proofread the book? In the book's second sentence we read that in 1898, the year of Gershwin's birth, the newly consolidated five boroughs of New York City 'encompassed over three hundred acres.' I don't think so; that's less than one square mile! But I persisted, and it got better. I noticed, also, that when the author, a former aspiring jazz trumpeter and then long-time editor of 'Foreign Affairs Quarterly,' was writing about the music itself his style became more graceful and his unbounded love for the subject was obvious. Indeed, his style is down-right perky when he's talking about something he's really interested in. Still, there is a good deal of 'and then he wrote' and extraneous material in the organization of the book.
I am certainly not a Gershwin scholar, but I have read several of biographies and lots of liner notes over the years. Edward Jablonski's Gershwin books remain the best I've seen. Still, I learned some new things in Hyland's book. For instance, I don't recall hearing or reading that Gershwin intended to write a total of 24 piano préludes (presumably like Chopin's Op. 28); he did finish three and apparently had begun a fourth. I read that and started wishing he'd kept at it--the three he published were party pieces of mine in my piano-playing days--but of course his was such a frenetic and tragically short life it's no surprise that he didn't manage it.
Quite the most appealing chapter for me is the one about 'Porgy and Bess.' It is chock-full of fascinating anecdotes as well as some serious analysis of the work itself. It is, after all, the greatest American opera. Hyland's enthusiasm for the subject and detailed knowledge of it makes this by far the most interesting chapter of all. For that I give him all credit.
This is not a book for the casual buyer but is necessary for anyone who wants to read more than the usual biographies. I will say this: Hyland seems to have read just about everything ever written about Gershwin and there is an extensive and helpful bibliography. For that alone, for some readers, it might be worth the purchase price.

From Rasputin to Run DMC, Edward VII to Ecstasy, Picasso to Prada: men's style and fashion have undergone a complete metamorphosis over the past century, going from the stiff formality of Edwardian dress to the present-day casual streetwear. Take an intriguing peek, decade by decade, at changing male attitudes to life, apparel, and looks. Every period is defined by its representations in films and journals, hairstyle and grooming, personalities, trends in clothing, boys' toys, and sport and leisure. The events that made an indelible imprint on generations of men run the gamut from world wars to the invention of the Walkman and the launch of Loaded magazine, while the influential personalities who altered the course of history include such vaunted and diverse names as Sigmund Freud, Frank Sinatra, the Beatles, and Muhammad Ali, as well as designers Pierre Cardin, Calvin Klein, Georgio Armani, and Tommy Hilfiger. Highly illustrated, incredibly informative, and deeply absorbing, this is essential reading for the image-conscious man of today's world.
Book Description
Tells how radio and television became an integral part of American life, of how a toy became an industry and a force in politics, business, education, religion, and international affairs.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent overview of the formative years of US broadcasting.......2004-09-05
This book is the second in a series of three books that comprehensively cover the American broadcasting and radio industry from the very beginning through 1970. This particular book covers the period between 1933 and 1953, when much of the current structure (networks, sponsorship, etc) of the business were solidified. The whole series is outstanding, especially volumes I & II, both of which I would highly recommend to anyone interested in understanding how the US radio/TV business evolved.

Book Description
Following the success of Volume 1, which covered shortwave broadcasting through to the end of the Cold War, this new book covers the many and varied developments that have taken place since then, set in the context of the political changes that have taken place. Propaganda broadcasting on the shortwaves is now widely recognized as an overt strategy in conflict but is also publicly credited with having played a major role in "winning" the Cold War. It is now being used within differing political and cultural strategies and the book covers developments across the world and in domains such as religious broadcasting. Meanwhile transmitter power and technology continue to increase, and dramatic changes occur within the broadcast industry itself.

Customer Reviews:
Not a good choice.......2003-12-12
I think Mastering Windows 2000 Server is one of the best Win2K books on the market. I was expecting Mastering Exchange Server 2000 to be much the same. This book quite simply frustrates me. I keep it on the shelf and refer to it sometimes and then remember how bad it is. The problem with this book is that it covers the spectrum of Exchange 2000 with no detail about anything you might encounter if you actually run Exchange 2000. If you want a book that describes what every menu in Exchange looks like then this is the book for you. I have given this book a fair shake but its definetly 2 thumbs down.
Great book.......2003-11-05
Great Book. I had never deployed Exchange Server before, but using this book I was able to understand, setup, and put exchange online for my company in only a few days. We were even able to use "OWA" (Outlook Web Access) that allows our employees to access their email through a browser from any location in the world that has Internet access.
No book is perfect, but this one provided nearly everything I needed to know to setup and run exchange. And if the book doesn't provide the answer to your question, the author does. Three times I emailed the author, Barry Gerber, requesting information on some important point, and three times Barry responded much faster than I would have dreamed. One time he replied with the answer I needed within 5 minutes! Great book, great Author! If you need to deploy Exchange Server for your organization, you can get it done using this book!
Ok for foundation.......2003-10-03
I found this hard to read and search on for specific information, some critical information was just not covered in anywhere near enough detail. Active Directory Connector for example.
I have ordered another Exchange 2k book to try and fill in the missing pieces. 'Mastering' in the title is perhaps optimistic.
Very frustrating!.......2003-05-24
I don't understand how this book got so many good ratings.
Its frusting to get a bad book. You waste, money, time and loose confidence in your ability.
I was a beginner in Exchange and thought that this book would be a good start. I was wrong. This book is not for beginners.
If you want a book for beginners you should read "Exchange 2000 Server Administration" by Bill English and Cavalancia.
Why didn't I like the book?
-It kept comparing Exchange 2000 Server with 5.5 the entire way through in too much detail. Just more 5.5 information than I care for. The title says "Exchange 2000 Server" not 5.5.
-It kept going into properties and attributes. For example what a mailbox is. Every property and attribute in existence but when you're done reading it no where does it says what a mailbox is! And that goes for everything. I felt like I was just reading and reading but not having anything explained or defined properly. As if you're reading a manual. How incredibly frustrating.
-I may be wrong, but I'm not sure the author really understands the material.
Book written by a Microsoft cheerleader.......2003-02-19
A lot of space is used describing how cool a feature is, or how easy Exchange 2000 is to use. Looking in the book's Acknowledgments, the author gives his "deepest thanks to the marketing folks at Microsoft and Microsoft's public relations support firm".
That's how the book comes across to me, something written by a PR firm.
For example, when I wanted to learn about OWA, I was met with this text: "If everything I've said so far about Exchange 2000 Server's OWA has failed to excite you, I know this will."
I don't need excitement. I need to know how Exchange 2000 works!
I agree with a previous reviewer, that the author describes the obvious in a chatty way, without giving any real understanding. Rather like a long-winded friend who never gets to the point.
