Product Description

Professors Fischl and Paul explain law school exams in ways no one has before, all with an eye toward improving the reader's performance. The book begins by describing the difference between educational cultures that praise students for "right answers," and the law school culture that rewards nuanced analysis of ambiguous situations in which more than one approach may be correct. Enormous care is devoted to explaining precisely how and why legal analysis frequently produces such perplexing situations.

But the authors don't stop with mere description. Instead, Getting to Maybe teaches how to excel on law school exams by showing the reader how legal analysis can be brought to bear on examination problems. The book contains hints on studying and preparation that go well beyond conventional advice. The authors also illustrate how to argue both sides of a legal issue without appearing wishy-washy or indecisive. Above all, the book explains why exam questions may generate feelings of uncertainty or doubt about correct legal outcomes and how the student can turn these feelings to his or her advantage.

In sum, although the authors believe that no exam guide can substitute for a firm grasp of substantive material, readers who devote the necessary time to learning the law will find this book an invaluable guide to translating learning into better exam performance.

It seems incomprehensible, not long ago, that this book did not exist! The information accumulated and distributed in this book is priceless. Many law-thought exercises, a challenging read for the mind but not tiring or boring when taken in chunks.

If you're going to law school or are in it right now, and haven't read this, you certainly will regret it!

4 out of 5 stars When's the best time to read?.......2007-05-20

This was a good book, but I kept trying to figure out exactly when it should be read.

I'm starting law school in the fall, so I'm trying to do what prep I can over the summer. Much of this book was understandable for someone who hasn't actually started law school, but there were some concepts that are based on information that you learn in your 1L year. Since this book has tips for preparing for exams ahead of time, it wouldn't make sense to read during the semester (and who would have time, anyway?). In a revision, I would suggest that the authors tune the content slightly to be absorbed more easily by someone who has not started law school yet.

5 out of 5 stars An essential tool for law students.......2007-03-20

I am a law professor at the oldest night law school in San Francisco who has struggled for years to communicate to my stdents how to prepare for exams. I wish someone had told me about this book years ago. It explains cogently and distinctly why law school exams are different than those exams you did so well on in college (or you wouldn't be in law school) and why you need to start thinking differently. The book goes through the different types of questions one mught find on an exam and shows how to address them. It also provides numerous tips on how to study and how to approach exam writing. The book also does a great job of explaining a theme I have pushed for years --- that exam-writing skills are really the writing and thinking skills students will need when they become lawyers. It should be required reading in law schools. And it wouldn't hurt law professors to read the book either.

3 out of 5 stars GREAT information, but dense.......2007-03-09

This is not a book for fast help. It is a great book to use before you anywhere near a time crunch!!!

2 out of 5 stars Not worth it.......2007-01-10

This is full of common sense info. If I had to do it again, I wouldn't buy this book.

Book Description

A seismic shift occurred inside the US trade union movement in October 1994 when the 'New Voice' campaign swept a new leadership into the AFL-CIO, the federation of American unions. Led by John Sweeney, the campaign forced the first democratic election for top officers in the history of the organisation. The new team, including Sweeney as President, Rich Trumka as Secretary-Treasurer, and Linda Chavaz-Thompson as Executive Vice-President, came to power promising changes from within. With the new leadership came a virtually complete recasting of the federation designed to meet the needs of working families in a changing economy and rebuild the most critical link in fighting for a more progressive and egalitarian America. The US union movement is making news again--from political action to organising, from challenging corporate power to building links with workers in an international arena. Yet, even with increased press attention and more public awareness of today's unions, the inside story of the new AFL-CIO hasn't been told before. In these pages the new programme of the federation is presented for the first time by those directly involved with its implementation. Not Your Father's Union Movement is an indispensable guide for anyone who is a union member or who cares about social change. The book also provides a useful introduction to today's unions for students, teachers and others. Among the topics discussed are programmes around organising, political action, women, immigrant workers, global strategy and international worker solidarity, and changing the union's image. Case studies of how labour won the strike against UPS, and the legislative fights to increase the minimum wage and defeat Fast Track Trade Authority, are also included. Contributors: Jo-Ann Mort, Harold Meyerson, Richard Bensinger, Karen Nussbaum, Steve Rosenthal, Kelly Candaele, Jerry Hudson, Amy Dean, Hector Figueroa, Barbara Shaillor, Guy Molyneux, David Kusnet, Mark Baldwin, David Glenn, Matt Witt, Rand Wilson, Juan Gonzalez and Noel Beasley.

5 out of 5 stars The Rebirth of the AFL-CIO.......2000-01-05

Jo-Ann Mort's book is a collection of articles about the changes that have been taking place in the new AFL-CIO. Under the leadership of John Sweeny and Linda Chevez-Thompson, the AFL-CIO has been reivigorated and has taken on many new project, such as "America Needs a Raise," a call for all Americans, Union or not to have a living wage and a rising standard of living. In prior years organized labor just tried to hold onto what it had, and saw its influence with the democratic party decline. But today's movement has focused on recruiting new members, and building membership in America's unions to secure a voice for all Americans. Many of the articles, such as "Part-time America Won't Work," which is about the 1997 UPS-Teamster's strike against the transitionto a part-time work force, are important to most people. Prior to 1995, it would have seen likely that organized labor would slip away. But today, with the new AFL-CIO's energy and issues that address the economic plight most American, seem to have momentum. Who would have thought of IBM employees trying to unionize fifteen years ago?

5 out of 5 stars One great book - a real winner!.......1999-04-22

I have always been a huge fan of labor. I believe in the cause of the average guy. I am a proud pro-labor Democrat and a proud supporter of organized labor. I am a proud believer in the ideals behind the New Deal-Fair Deal-New Frontier-Great Society liberalism. I believe that government's job is to protect the weakest among us. Social and moral justice is a must. Thus, when I saw this book, I knew I would love it - and I did! This has labor's pro-worker political, economic and social agenda outlined clearly and concisely. Here you see what the working person in the U.S. needs - decent wages, good health care, education, training, a decent job atmosphere and a society which values families. Here you see the right wing's awful attack on labor through a cut buying power for the Minimum Wage, attacks on Medicare and Social Security and attacks on the right to collective bargaining. The fact is that, despite its often mentioned corruption from the leadership, labor remains one of the most credible sources for average political participation. Nowhere else can one who is honestly concerned about families find an organization or source which allows such participation politically and socially. Other groups - on left and right - do not allow this. The trial lawyers, health insurance groups, doctors associations, business groups and right wing anti-labor groups are all greedy bandits. The religious right manipulates persons and scares them. The civil rights organizations are the closest thing we have to labor groups. Yet, labor wins for labor is a group with an agenda which spans all parts of America. After all, who does not benefit from the right to join and strike with a legal union, universal health care, social investments in day care, education, jobs and training and family leave? Who does not win when the least among us get fed, clothed, housed and get a dignified job? The agenda outlined here is what we need in this right wing era. The U.S. desparately needs a health care system in which all have care. We need a rejuvinated public education system. We need fair labor laws. We need fair civil rights and equal protection laws. We need day care, family leave and a fair Minimum Wage. Full employment is still necessary. This book is great. For anybody who wants to find out where this country should be headed, this one is a true winner!

Billboard Books & Joel Whitburn & his Record Research team have Indeed come up with a treasure trove of AC chart INFO. This body of work is a must have for those of us who Love"Soft Rock".Or Better Still,as the Record Research motto on the back of the book says"for those who have a HEART for the Charts.Has Listings of the 200 most succesful AC Artists. This book also cross references w/ Pop Chart Information under ea.Artist.I Love This Book!I can't Wait for updates to this,It'll be Awhile!ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent product!.......2007-03-26

As always with Joel Whitburn's Record Research books, the detail is spot on - exactly what it says on the tin. A fascinating insight into the changes that have occurred in what is considered "adult" music over 4 decades. Way back in the sixties, the phrases "easy listening" and "middle-road" were applied to what is now called the "adult contemporary" chart - that gives you a good indication as to the sort of music that generally qualified in those days.

I particularly like the fact that B-side details are also given, which seems to be the case with the latest issues of the RR singles books.

Whether or not this volume is of interest or use to you depends on what you want to use it for. If you merely want to scan it for interest and entertainment, then get the volume that addresses the Hot 100. If you need it for research purposes, or your interest goes beyond the pop charts, then this is a fabulous book.

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-11-15

An excellent book with tons of information and insight. It's great to see the many different types of artists who have landed on the Adult Contemporary charts and also great to see my favorite AC group the Carpenters ranked as one of the most successful of alltime.

              5 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......2003-09-04

What a great book. Almost as great as other RR books. It's always cool to see rock stars of the past like Clapton, Stewart and Billy Joel make great strides on the Adult Contemporary chart. In this book you will see how well all the pop acts have done with soft rock radio in the last 40 years. From Perry Como to Jim Brickman, from Rita Coolidge to Enya. The book even has a great section of the AC hits from 1955-early 1961.

My only complaint is that with the growing success of adult-rock music, I kind of wish Record Research would have put a special bonus Adult Top 40 section (based on research from Billboard's Adult T40 chart). It would have fit in well with this book. It may be another ten years for another revision of this book but enjoy this one while it is totally up-to-date to 2002.

                Book Description

Given Perl's natural fit for web applications development, it's no surprise that Perl is also a natural choice for web services development. It's the most popular web programming language, with strong implementations of both SOAP and XML-RPC, the leading ways to distribute applications using web services. But books on web services focus on writing these applications in Java or Visual Basic, leaving Perl programmers with few resources to get them started. Programming Web Services with Perl changes that, bringing Perl users all the information they need to create web services using their favorite language. Programming Web Services with Perl steers clear of the hype surrounding web services and concentrates on what is useful and practical. The book introduces the major web services standards, such as XML-RPC, SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI, and shows how to implement Perl servers and clients using these standards. You'll find detailed references on both the XML and SOAP toolkits, and learn when to use one technology in favor of the other. The book is rich with programming examples that you'll find useful well past the learning stage. And, moving beyond the basics, the book offers solutions to problems of security, authentication, and scalability. Some of the topics covered in the book are: Programming Web Services with Perl was written for Perl programmers who have no prior knowledge of web services. You can pick up this book without any understanding of XML-RPC or SOAP and be able to apply these technologies easily, through the use of publicly available Perl modules detailed in the book. If you're interested in applying XML-RPC and SOAP technologies to distributed programming applications, then Programming Web Services with Perl is a book you'll want to have.

5 out of 5 stars relevant, practical and well-balanced.......2003-03-24

Programming Web Services with Perl is principally a book on implementing solutions using XML-RPC and SOAP in Perl. It also covers complementary and alternative standards such as WSDL, UDDI, and REST in some detail. And on the periphery, it finishes with a whirlwind tour of developing message routing, alternative data encoding within XML, security, transactions, workflow, internationalization, service discovery, extension, and management techniques and specifications.

The book assumes the reader will have the knowledge of an intermediate level Perl programmer. I.e., the reader is assumed to have a working knowledge of references, data structures, and object-oriented Perl. On the other hand no previous knowledge of XML, XML-RPC, SOAP or XML related technologies is required.

It should also be mentioned that both of the authors Randy J. Ray and Pavel Kulchenko are also the principle developers of the most popular XML-RPC and SOAP Perl modules: XML::RPC and SOAP::Lite respectively. That said, the book is not a soap box for the authors to tout the merits of their tools.

Rather, it is a practical book which starts with grounding fundamentals. Readers should walk away with a core understanding of XML-RPC and SOAP and not just a particular tool set for working with them. The authors examine the alternative XML-RPC and SOAP tools, illustrate how they are used, and give practical and even handed reasons why their modules should be preferred. Which comes down to issues of features, active development, support, and the amount of work required to code to a particular interface. They then settle down to a comfortable and thorough guide to XML::RPC and SOAP::Lite.

The topics and issues are illustrated throughout using real world web services. For example creating an XML-RPC client for O'Reilly's Meerkat news wire, or a SOAP client to covert use.perl.org's journal stream to RSS. Code is presented to the reader filtered down to highlight each particular issue as it is discussed. This is nice in that it avoids listing slight variations of the same code multiple times, but on the down side it can also leave the reader flipping back and forth to reassemble an example in their head. Full code for each example is provided in the appendices. And all of the example code may be downloaded from O'Reilly at [their web site].

All-in-all, the book is a thorough practical introduction to working with XML-RPC, SOAP and related technologies. When I started reading the book, I was a bit disappointed to see that it only covered XML-RPC and SOAP related services. When I finished, I was impressed with how very much information they'd managed to pack into so few pages.

And yet, I was left wishing there'd been a more through coverage of interoperability issues between other SOAP implementations and things like custom de-serializers. To be honest interoperability and de-serialization are mentioned, and the authors do an excellent job of referring the reader on to sources for continued reading on most other topics.

The book does an admirable job balancing content, length, and information density. Not to mention an excellent job delivering the information that will still be relevant years and not just weeks from the date published. Most of the topics I'd wished to see covered in more depth are those that are still developing and consequently most likely to become quickly dated. In short a well balanced practical guide to applying XML-RPC and SOAP to solve problems.

5 out of 5 stars A "complete reference" is oh so hard to find..........2003-03-16

And yet this book covers every aspect of web service development utilizing perl. As a long time user of the original Frontier::RPC2 module, things have come a long way, and with that greater complexity, the concepts have grown in scope considerably. This IS the book that you want to read if you REALLY want to understand SOAP and XML-RPC. From the XML DTD's to implementation code (either standalone applications or utilizing mod_perl) this book covers everything in between. In all it is a welcome addition to the O'Reilly family of Perl books.

5 out of 5 stars Great intro to XML-RPC.......2003-03-08

As with all O'Reilly books there's a great intro to the technologies. They take you through how it works, not just how to deploy some code. When you get to the XML-RPC modules, they don't force a solution on you, but give a great tour of what's available and let you pick. For me, the highlight was the intro to Randy J. Ray's RPC::XML modules (he's also one of the authors). I've been fighting with getting the 'system.*' handlers hacked in with other aproaches and it was great to see someone had already figured out such a clean approach. (Which is something since Perl can get reeeaaal ugly!) This book has saved me many days of wasted development.

Some time ago, I purchased a different book: "Programming Web Services With SOAP" (ASIN: 0596000952), and my feeling - and that of many others - is that it was very weak. A decent view from 30,000 feet, but it was not very helpful to a perl developer thrown kicking and screaming into a project requiring XML and the use of SOAP::Lite. "Disappointment" was the best way to describe it.

But *THIS* is the book that the other one should have been - it's fantastic. It is chock-full of real live examples *with code*, the introductory and explanatory material is excellent, and the writing style is simply a joy to read.

In particular, the reference material for SOAP::Lite is very much welcome: it was written by the author of the code.

Five very glowing stars for this book.

A guide to Apache Batik—the Java library that can be used to read SVG files and translate the instructions in the files into graphics—this book shows how Batik can also be used to save the graphics as JPEG, TIFF, PNG, GIF, and other formats, so that the graphics can be transferred. Covered is how Batik can also be used to create animation, just like Flash movies and how Batik can potentially be used to create a drawing program such as Corel DRAW.

Batik simplifies dealing with SVG content in Java based applications or applets. For example, using Batik's SVG generator module, a Java application or applet can easily export its graphics into the SVG format. Using Batik's SVG viewing component, an application or applet can also integrate SVG viewing and interaction capabilities without much trouble. Another possibility is to use Batik's modules to convert SVG to various formats, such as raster images (JPEG, PNG or TIFF) or other vector formats (WMF or PDF). This is a very good book for the Java programmer who wants to learn how to use Batik in their programs. Thus, prior knowledge of Java is assumed. The following is a run down of the chapters and their contents:

Chapter 1 Getting Started with Batik - discusses what Batik consists of and what the benefits of its modules are. In particular, this chapter explains how to use Squiggle to create, view, and manipulate an SVG document and how to use Rasterizer to export an SVG document to different formats.

                Using Pretty-Printer
                What Else Comes with Batik?
                Summary

Chapter 2 Creating SVG - shows you how to use one of the core modules in Batik, SVG Generator, in a simple Swing application that generates SVG documents with a single click.

                Using SVG Creator
                Other Features of SVG Generator
                Summary

Chapter 3 Viewing SVG - discusses how to display SVG documents using JSVGCanvas, a specialized Swing component that comes with the Batik distribution.
                Displaying Generated SVG Documents
                JSVGCanvas Interactivity
                Saving the Generated Document
                Displaying an SVG File
                Summary

Chapter 4 Working with Transcoders - explains how to use the Transcoder API to convert SVG images to raster formats such as JPEG, PNG, and TIFF.
                The Transcoder API
                Using Transcoders in Applications
