Great book.......2007-10-10
This is a great book. Lots of hints on cleaning, etc. I have used it numerous times and it works!
This is a great resource book.......2007-09-28
I bought "Haley's Hints" after seeing it highlighted on one of the fundraising shows on PBS. We're already using lots of the tips in the book, and loving them. The only problem we encountered was actually finding the water softener (or washing soda). It does not mention any brand names, and most stores I checked didn't know what I was referring to. One other note of interest that I've discovered through trial and error...when it says use salt, use iodized salt...NOT sea salt. Apparently the iodized version has a critical component missing in natural salt.
Great Buy!.......2007-09-16
I purchased this book after seeing a segment on PBS. This book is filled with simple tips on how to organize your home. Several tips have become quick favorites. This book led me to purchase Haley's Cleaning Tips which have really been useful. I even purchased a copy for my mother who has enjoyed learning new tips.
Haleys Hints?.......2007-09-14
I was looking forward to getting this book especially after watching the PBS special, but I was so disappointed. I was really looking for good products for cleaning products(which I haven't found yet). I think that if he transcribed the show that he does for PBS and sells that he will have a much better book. I would only recommend this book if you already have some good home care books in your collection. This is not a particularly good choice for the modern family.
WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS.......2007-09-06
Great book for practical, efficient hints of all types. Lots of short cuts too. We all can use Haley's Hints in our busy daily lives.

Great practical solutions that WORK.......2007-09-17
Recommend this highly to everyone! I've already looked up lots of great tips on everything from cleaning my coffeepot to gettting rid of odors and cleaning all kinds of stains on anything! You can sure save money by having some basic chemicals and household items around! I'm giving copies as presents to family and friends!
Home remedies work (usually).......2007-09-11
Haley's Cleaning Hints really work. Well - about 95% of them do. Perhaps some materials have changed since the formulas were developed?
But - the hints that do work, work very well. And at a fraction of the cost of commercial cleaners. They are certainly worth a try. Good book - recommended.
Wonderful Earth Friendly Methods.......2007-08-23
THis book is packed with many frugal and Earth Friendly methods of taking care of myself and my possesions.
super helpful.......2007-07-05
This book is great. Already used a few of the hints. Don't know how I lived without it.
Fantastic information!.......2007-05-07
This book has given me some insight on using household items to clean just about everything. I have cleaned some things that I wished I could clean years ago, instead things were thrown out. This information is better than hiring cleaning services.

Book Description
Mountains, deserts, savannahs and the polar regions are fragile both in their ecologies and the cultures of their inhabitants. These fragile environments are characterised by a marked seasonality, and many human activities are limited to clearly defined times of the year. Environmental impacts arise not only from traditional economic activities, but also from tourism which has recently grown rapidly in many of these environments around the world. This trend is welcomed by the tourism industry but viewed with apprehension by many organisations concerned with protecting the human and natural systems of fragile environments. While tourism can provide new sources of revenue and help stem depopulation, it can also destabilise communities, making them dependent on external sources of money and endangering long-established traditions and ways of life. People and Tourism in Fragile Environments discusses many of these delicate interactions by presenting detailed case studies from five continents. The contributors write from a wide and well-balanced range of perspectives, including anthropology, geography, recreation, national park management, environmental consulting and the tourism industry. The common theme is clear: that tourism must always be seen in the long-term context of the communities with which it interacts. This book is an essential contribution to the literature of tourism and sustainable development and will be widely read by students of tourism, travel and tourism professionals, and anyone involved in related fields of sustainable development and fragile environments.

Worthwhile "True Life Adventures".......2003-09-01
Neville Judd's Al Stewart: The True Life Adventures of a Folk-Rock Troubadour is, above all, a fun read. It is clear from page one that Judd is passionate about music and about singer-songwriter Al Stewart ("Year of the Cat," "Time Passages," "Roads to Moscow"). That passion pleasantly carries the reader through 312 densely packed pages of amusing anecdotes, free-flowing factoids, and the occasional surprise from the life story of the only artist from the '60s British folk-roots scene to score two LPs in the US Top Thirty. Judd enjoyed close access to Stewart and many of his contemporaries, colleagues, friends, and family members: The resulting book is an interweaving of snippets from interviews, writings from Stewart's own journals, and the author's own enthusiastic, largely comma-free prose. The whole offers a breezy, if sometimes repetitive, and detailed look at Stewart's life from birth through the present day, although the lion's share of attention is given to his public-school years and his hardscrabble bedsit days as a rising player in London's folk scene. Judd also shines more light on the dark side of the starmaker machinery of the record business--it's fascinating to see how the rock-and-roll dream turned nightmarish through the differing perspectives of Stewart (who, to Judd's credit, does not get kid-gloves treatment), former manager Luke O'Reilly, and various bandmates. Here's hoping that the much-deserved resurgence of Al Stewart will bring about a sequel--this book, sadly, offers very little about the mature Stewart, who is its most compelling character. But for the richly portrayed Soho scene and the glimpses into the past of a truly gifted and woefully underrated and underappreciated artist, Al Stewart: The True Life Adventures of a Folk-Rock Troubadour is enjoyable reading for any music lover. It's a must-read for serious Stewart fans and devotees of British folk-rock.
It helps to understand the concept of "irony"...........2003-08-31
The disappointed reviewer from Vermont clearly fails to appreciate subtle ideas, like irony. Al's bio by his old friend Neville is an all too accurate account of the "true life adventures" of a talented musician trying to make his way in the music business. What the reviewer describes as "false advertising" is simply the way things are. Get used to it.
As to the balance of material: I for one am far more interested in the question "How did you break into the business and become a success?" than "What's it like when a dream becomes a career?" And as a contemporary of Al's, I'm still fascinated by "the haze of highs and lows and blues" that was the late 60s in England. I'm glad Neville concentrated on that.
Is it a perfect book? Of course not: Neville is not a polished writer, the production quality is so-so, and there are numerous omissions and lacunae. But never mind. Those who think Al Stewart is a jazz musician, or a photographer, or a management consultant or an England wicketkeeper need not buy this. Fans of Al and his music will enjoy this account of Al's life and will take pleasure in discovering the origins of some of their favorite songs. So a solid three stars, plus one more for nostalgic delight.
A disappointment.......2003-06-20
Having enjoyed the music of Al Stewart for more than twenty years, I was looking forward to reading this book when I first heard about it a few months back. Unfortunately, it is a disappointment on several levels.
First and most obviously, it is poorly produced. The photos are grainy, fuzzy, and often over- or under-exposed. The type is borderline microscopic, and sure to induce tension headaches among all but the most eagle-eyed readers. The text seems blissfully unmolested by the hand of an editor.
Second, the writing is just bad. Not only does the text have all the verve and charm of a recording industry technical journal, but it is horribly organized. For example, the author sometimes presents an issue as if introducing it for the first time -- evidently oblivious that the matter was already discussed a few pages earlier. Personalities are introduced and issues are taken up with great fanfare, only to be left hanging, never to be addressed again. Some chapters (especially those dealing with Al's early years as a folk singer in London) drag on and on in tedious, uninteresting detail. Others seem far too cursory. Having spent hundreds of pages on the 1960s and 1970s, the author dispenses with the next quarter-century in a few short chapters.
Third, there is the matter of Al himself. Subtitling this book "True Life Adventures" qualifies as something bordering on false advertising. Although Al sings about exotic locations and dramatic events, his own life seems to have been curiously uneventful, aside from his brief brush with rock stardom in the mid-1970s.
This brings up the matter of what has always been a nagging doubt in my mind concerning Al's music. His songs are undoubtedly beautifully crafted, played, and produced; but I've often sensed something of an emotional void at their center. This book confirms these suspicions. In these pages, Al mainly comes across as a meticulous but dreadfully shallow artist -- clever and superficially intellectual, but devoid of real depth or substance. All in all, not a very interesting subject for a lengthy biography.

This Datebook is NOT a Sin.......2003-11-07
Another great item from Shag. This datebook helps keep me organized as well as keeps me informed with countless tidbits of information on every page. Great illustrations will also keep you busy!
Must-have for Shag fans!.......2003-11-05
It would be a *sin* not to buy this datebook. There are a year's worth of Shag's wickedly delightful illustrations, perfect for framing in 2005. The "On this day..." calendar notes are hilarious--from Ozzy's birthday on December 3rd to Marilyn Monroe's first nude photography shoot (May 27th, 1949...When asked what she had on, she said 'the radio'). And there's still space for scheduling your own scandals!
Customer Reviews:
Very well done.......2007-06-20
Funny and fascinating. What an incredbile life!
Great Book!.......2001-03-03
It's obvious this guy is a weatherman, not a professional writer being paid to turn an ordinary life into something that sells books. The book isn't weighed down with lots of pretty words or meteorology lessons. It's simply written as a story of Gary England's life, and what a life that has been! As a young girl I was always fascinated by tornadoes, and at one point seriously considered being a meteorologist. After reading England's book I'm convinced I couldn't have handled the politics and pressure. I hated turning each page because it only brought me closer to the end of the book. I'm sure Gary has lots more stories to tell, and I hope he writes many more books to tell them! I'll gobble them all up.
One of the neatest things about reading this book is that now when I see Gary England on TV clips saying those now-famous words during the May 3, 1999 Oklahoma City Tornado, "You NEED to be underground to survive this one!" I look at him with a knowledge of his life story and how he got to be where he is, and I'm filled with such respect. Thank you, Gary, for suffering through petty politics to be able to save so many lives.
Great resource of meteorological knowledge.......1999-09-17
I have not read the book as yet but I would like the opportunity to relate how Mr. England's reputation is in Oklahoma. I worked in the railroad industry for 15 years in Oklahoma which is greatly affected by weather extremes. Our supervisors used to tell us to watch Gary England for weather updates as his was the best in the state. Mr. England never failed us.
Weathering 2 Storms.......1998-09-05
As a youngster growing up in Seiling, Oklahoma, Gary England had an idol in television meteorologist Harry Volkman. Flash forward 40 years. As a youngster growing up in Oklahoma City, I had an idol in Gary England. This is the first time I have known the entire story of what England has gone through in his 20+ years at KWTV. I have met with and talked to England on several occasions, and I will never know how he keeps his sanity while weathering 2 storms...the weather itself, and the world of television news.
A true perspective in the television industry........1998-05-15
After reading this book, I felt that I was no longer alone in dealings with news directors. I have only been in television weather for 6 years and have had my fill of television business. My hats off to Gary for being able to stave off over a dozen new directors. This book is a must read for anyone wanting to venture into the "glamorous" life of television news, especially any aspiring meteorologist.
Book Description
Nearly any application, you build, requires some form of output. Often the format of that output can change on a regular basis, creating a heavy maintenance burden, and a restrictive test cycle. By utilizing the power of the Velocity template engine you can integrate templated output into your application, decoupling the application logic from the output format. This book offers an in-depth look at Velocity. You’ll start right off with configuration and setup and work through to full application development using Velocity, as well extensions to the Velocity framework. This is not just a book about Web development – Velocity has many uses beyond being a simple replacement for JSP, and this book discusses and demonstrates many of these uses.
Customer Reviews:
Missing a lot.......2006-02-14
I am using this book to bring myself up to speed on a project that combines Velocity with Struts. I'm working with Struts and Velocity modules built by a consulting company. Before the project, I didn't know either one. Now I am in the middle of the project and somewhat familiar with both. Most of the velocity commands I am able to figure out pretty quickly without the book, which is good because every time I try to find something ($link.setAction for example, which is needed to obtain the URL for forwarding) it's not there. Maybe I'm missing something, but if I am, it also is not identified in this book. I'm doing much better by referring to my Struts reference(Programming Jakarta Struts) and searching the web.
Could do with half the pages.......2005-04-22
Although the first few chapters provide a good description of the Velocity Template Language and how to drive it, I found myself progressively flipping pages after that. I also read Harrop's Pro Spring, which was much more information-dense despite being over twice the size of this book.
If you are not yet familiar with concepts like MVC, layered application design, Struts, Spring etc: ignore the previous ;-)
Ok but some mistakes.......2005-03-03
It is a good book, nevertheless be careful to try to take the Java code for your production environment, in page 189 when it is explaining about the shopping cart makes money operations with type double when should be used BigDecimal in this case.
Complete coverage of Velocity.......2004-11-25
I have always been a strong supporter of Velocity. I even wrote an article for JavaRanch about Velocity back in March. Velocity is an open source template framework designed to simplify the task of generating content such as web pages, email, or any other text-based output. The Velocity documentation available from Apache is short, low on examples, and leaves holes (even if it is fairly good compared to some other open source projects). This book fills in the gaps and gives excellent coverage of the many features that are available with Velocity.
The book starts with an introduction to Velocity and then explains how to install and configure it. The author then discusses the Velocity Template Language, examines its shortcomings, and demonstrates how to get around them. Best practices are covered early in the book. Although Velocity is normally thought of as a web-based framework, the author doesn't let us forget that it can be used for both stand-alone and web applications and gives us detailed chapters on both. Velocity tools are well covered including Anakia, which can be used to transform XML. The Velocity architecture is explained as well as ways to extend that architecture.
The examples are well thought out and give good coverage of the features of Velocity. The most interesting part of the examples is how little work it is to integrate Velocity into a well-designed framework. The author shows how Velocity fits into both Struts and Spring, demonstrating that Velocity is not meant to replace these frameworks but rather to simplify content generation in any framework. I can strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in Velocity. For anyone not interested in Velocity, the question is, why not?
Everything you need to know about Velocity.......2004-10-12
This is an excellent introduction to the Velocity template engine. It covers the basic use and syntax of the engine, then embedding and extending it. It's very well written and organized.
On the downside I think the graphics could have been used more effectively, and I would have liked to have seen more on the basic template syntax. Overall, however, I highly recommend this book to anyone for whom the Velocity template engine is a central part of the architecture.
