Harrison's = good medicine.......2007-08-11
Readers should know right off the bat that this book is for people who have a medical background only- your average person is not going to be able to understand much of it.
So who is it for then? Well, I've been in medicine for 15 years and find this book all over the hospital so really just about any health professional who wants a general reference book for how to manage adult diseases of practically any system (such as GI, respiratory, neurological disorders to name a few) will find this book to be a good resource.
Having said that, the book is mainly written as a resource for internal medicine doctors, that is docs that focus on adult medicine and have had special study and training focusing on the prevention and treatment of adult diseases. So if you're in the medical profession, deal with adults, and are looking for a good reference book on adult medical conditions and treatments, this huge and comprehensive volume is probably just what you're looking for. One caveat though, while there is a wealth of info in here on how to manage and treat adult problems, there is no mention of how to better get patients to do what they are prescribed to do (exercise, take their meds, eat less fat..) and so I also recommend health professional check out The Sixty-Second Motivator for tips on increasing patient compliance.
Excellent Service.......2007-05-24
Received book promptly at a very reasonable price. Would definitely order from this supplier again.
I think this book should be a part of your home library.......2007-04-11
For 3rd Year medical students, but may serve a more valuable role for individuals with sickness. This is an excellent medical reference book to have available in your home library. The medical jargon is heavy but the degree of comprehensiveness important. The authors approach medicine by approach the problem rationally explains symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. Since everything in the body is chemistry except to see a lot of chemical equations and interactions. However, this does not diminish from relevance of the information in the book. The technical jargon can be easily translated into layman understanding and analogies. This is not a technical journal; it is a guideline. For example IBS: no known cure (adjust lifestyle), reoccurring, may be trigger by psychological events with deniability probable, three symptoms (pain, constipation, and diarrhea), and two prescription drugs that help with the symptoms. The book describes (if applicable) IBS regional areas of pain and discomfort. I found the technical information helpful in identifying the source of the problem.
I hope the authors will build a medical expert system for patients using the principles and knowledge from this book and put it online. Patients need to understand the problem from the view of a doctor in a detail manner and feel comfortable the thoroughly understand the treatment information. Doctors don't have time to explain their reasoning, but this book can feel in the missing information, Harrison is the missing resource. I believe, People are getting smarter and so the exclusive nature of the medical information is dissolving and becoming more accessible. Additionally, Harrison provides enough of a guideline for further medical research on the problem.
The best. .......2007-01-04
All you need to know and much more. Excellent edition and contents.
The worst shipping I ever got.
NO description necessary........2006-09-25
I read this as a student in my 3rd and 4th year. This book will help you be a better physician, no matter what specialty. If you buy one book your entire career, this is it.

Book Description
Chinese hand laundries have been a fixture of America's urban landscape for over one hundred years. Yet little is publicly known about the workings of this familiar institution which originated shortly after Chinese immigrants had started to arrive in some numbers in California in the 1850s. At that time the Chinese worked in a wide range of occupations, hand laundries being one of them.
With the faltering of the Western economy and as European immigration to the United States mounted, the tide of anti-Chinese sentiment swelled, which culminated in violent evictions of the Chinese from West Coast cities and in the imposition of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. The laundry became one of the few occupations in which Chinese were able to continue to work. This book is the definitive scholarly study of Chinese laundries and of those who worked in them in the United States.

The Chinese Laundryman: A Study of Social Isolation.......2003-11-29
This book is a MUST-READ for anyone interested in understanding Chinese Chicago in the 1930s from an "insider's perspective."
Although the book centers on the lives of Chinese laundrymen, the countless interviews detailed throughout the book helps the reader understand what life must have been like for the average Chinese in Chicago not just that of Chinese landrymen.

Book Description
Deborah McLaren presents a comprhensive overview of the history and global development of tourism, often considered the largest industry in the world today. No study of the globalization of the world's economy and industry can afford to ignore the impact that tourism is having in an ever shrinking world where wealth is concentrated in fewer and fewer hands- and within this important book the impact of tourism is thoroughly explored.

LONG ON ACCUSATION, SHORT ON SOLUTIONS.......2001-11-29
McLaren paints a gloomy picture of the collective state of mind of the Tourist and the tourism industry. The sub-title of her book, "The Paving of Paradise and What You Can Do to Stop It" is misleading. The first 100 pages of this 132 page book contain a blanket condemnation of tourism, the tourist industry and the tourist as exploiters and dispoilers. McLaren spends little time looking at solutions to the myriad of international problems travel and tourism create, preferring instead to catalog their excesses. Like electricity and gasoline, tourism is not a fact of the world which can be "cured". It must be wisely developed and carefully managed in the context of local desires and the local economy. It is not enough to preserve the integrity of a local population of indiginous persons when they are staving and sick and watching the rest of the healthy prosperous world via television or speaking about it on their cell phones. RETHINKING TOURISM AND ECOTRAVEL offers little in the way of hope or solution. It is a value in that it presents a picture of an inadequate response to the abuses of the tourism industry and supporting governmental bodies, but it is useless as a guide to actually "rethinking" or restructuring the industry or the mindset of the traveler.
A valuable tool for understanding the impact of tourism........1999-02-03
The Resource Center of The Americas has recently published a curriculum on tourism in Mexico, using Rethinking Tourism and Ecotravel as its major resource book. Tourism is one of the world's largest industries and Deborah McLaren has done indepth research into its impact on the host community and the environment. Her book helps readers/travelers to analyze the relationship between poverty, environmental exploitation and tourism. It is not all bad news, however. The book shows that there are ways to travel that are responsible. The excellent bibliography gives information on "rethinking tourism" organizations, tour operators and programs, including many web sites. The curriculum that the Resource Center of The Americas developed using Rethinking Tourism and Ecotravel is titled Buen Viaje: Mutually Beneficial Tourism (ISBN 1-893440-00-1). It is for grades 8-12 through adult. It includes descriptions of four tourist sites in Mexico, with narrative accounts from Mexicans who live or work in those areas.
Big hit - will engage, entertain and infuriate its readers........1997-10-10
El Planeta Platica (http://www.planeta.com)
Deborah McLaren's Rethinking Tourism and Ecotravel takes on the most pressing issue in the tourism industry today - how too often "ecotravel" destroys both natural resources and local cultures. But there are alternatives - if we care to pause and reflect - and that is what the author does in this book.
Rethinking Tourism could be a big hit in the airport bookstores and will open the eyes of many travelers. This book is written in a lively manner that will engage, entertain and infuriate its readers. McLaren contributes to our understanding of travel and its promise of improving the lives of local people and the environment.
Beginning with a personal journey to Jamaica, McLaren recounts her frustration seeking a meaningful encounter with Jamaican culture in Montego Bay. "I tried to meet some local people without being accosted by entrepreneurs," she writes. "But I was taken to other all-inclusive resorts around the island... I noticed the creation of a fantasy tourism culture that by no means represented the real culture of Jamaica."
The book will not please everyone - especially the desciples of tourism and public relations. McLaren points out that tourism is often in direct conflict and competion with local people and the development of areas anround wilderness areas threatens the wildlife. She lists "Examples of eco-oh-ohs" traces failures in Costa Rica, the Galapagos islands, Malaysia and the Himalayas.
Yet it would be hard to characterize this book as a negative critique. This is a positive account of how to restructure (or at least rethink) tourism so that it does in fact benefit local people and their environments.
Book Description
Move over Mr. Webster. Cathy Hamilton is now helping readers discover what the message is. Following in the vein of her best-selling Momisms, Dadisms, and Kidisms, the author delivers Over-the-Hillisms: What They Say and What They Really Mean. No legitimate dictionary of American age-related remarks and comments could be funnier.Perfect material for everyone from forty-somethings on up, Over-the-Hillisms is full of those telling sayings that reveal they've finally gone over to the old side. Oldsters may not be history, but they've certainly got one, and that fact slips out in just about every comment and observation they make. They say, "They don't make 'em like that anymore," "When I was a kid . . . ," or "Do they have an early bird special?" but Cathy knows-and shows-what they really mean. Consider "What is she wearing?" "This ism is typically used to comment on the more radical fashions of the day," Hamilton writes, "including sheer tops, low-low rise jeans, and extreme body piercings. Many seniors conveniently forget this same ism was used by their elders."Over-the-Hillisms captures quips on topics from reading glasses and VCRs to the younger generation and thriftiness, and spins them into right-on tongue-in-cheek truth.

I never thought I would says these things, but I do!!.......2007-04-11
The book is a hoot!! I am in my 40's, and remember my parents saying some of these things. Now I catch myself using some of the same phrases! The ONLY critisism is the use of some mild profanity, which could have been left out without taking away from the book. Please do not let that keep you from the purchase, because it is mild. I felt comfortable enough to give a copy to my Sunday school teacher.

Lacrimoso Verismo.......2007-01-25
This is an important read for any Beethoven-head, classical music fan, or music history buff. I'm a fan of primary documentation in general; I would rather read letters, essays, or autobiographies than some scholarly tome. But these letters are very revealing as to Beethoven's character and state of mind. At times they are quite moving, such as Beethoven's letter to his brother where he stated that the only thing that prevented him from killing himself was the knowledge that he still had more music to give to the world. From just about anyone else that would seem like delusional grandiosity, but in Beethoven's case it was true.
It brought to mind a comment made by a patient who was opposed to psychiatric medications. He made an argument, a variation of a common one, linking mental illness as the driving force behind creativity: "If Beethoven had been given Prozac, we all would have been robbed of the Eroica." Sounds compelling, but is it true? One thing that can be learned from Beethoven's letters, in combination with other sources, is that he wrote his heaviest, darkest, most brooding works during periods of relative happiness. When he was in the deepest depths of his mood disorder, he wrote light, upbeat music, music that is brilliant in its own way, but not the music people generally picture as Beethovian. Certainly one can speculate as to links between creativity and some forms mental illness, but to equate the two is to marginalize the suffering of true mental illness. Here's what I'm saying: Mental illness is not something to exoticize. It is something to rebel against.
Who's to say that Beethoven on Prozac wouldn't have written the same music? Or wouldn't have written different but equally brilliant music? This also begs the question of whether or not a suffering artist really owes the public the products of their creativity, but that's another tangent.
You know who I'd like to medicate? Bruckner. How about Bruckner punching up his 7th symphony while on multiple stimulants? That might be interesting. Oops, off-topic again.
I recommend this book. If willing to invest the time, one could create an iPod Beethoven playlist that roughly tracks his work chronologically, and then read Beethoven's letters in short bites following along with the music.

Book Description
This volume counters the widely accepted notion that traditional family patterns are weakened by forces such as economic development and social revolutions. China has experienced wrenching changes on both the economic and the political fronts, yet from the evidence presented here the tradition of filial respect and support for aging parents remains alive and well.
Using collaborative surveys carried out in 1994 in the middle-sized industrial city of Baoding and comparative data from urban Taiwan, the authors examine issues shaping the relationships between adult Chinese children and their elderly parents. The continued vitality of intergenerational support and filial obligations in these samples is not simply an instance of strong Confucian tradition trumping powerful forces of change. Instead, and somewhat paradoxically, the continued strength of filial obligations can be attributed largely to the institutions of Chinese socialism forged in the era of Mao Zedong. With socialist institutions now under assault in the People's Republic of China, the future of intergenerational relations in the twenty-first century is once again uncertain.
Martin K. Whyte is Professor of Sociology, Harvard University.

A GIFT FOR SELF OR OTHERS.......2003-09-17
In this handsome journal, we are treated to Ken Ross' exquisite photographs taken during his many world travels. His sharp eye and heartfelt connection with diverse cultures are keenly reflected in his work. Striking color, subtle humor and poignant moments are there for all to experience. Add to this the richness of inspiring, thoughtful quotes from his mother, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross (and a few international proverbs) and you have a very delightful gift for yourself or for someone special to you. An added bonus is that the binding allows it to lay flat for ease of writing. A treat, indeed!

Wrong book / reveals some secrets on cast.......2004-06-26
Please disregard the other review I wrote for this book if it's still posted obviously the review was intended for The Real Real World book. The first book that ever came out for RW, on the first four seasons. But this book the diaries is okay it goes up to the Maimi season. It's supposed to be all the dirt they didn't air in the season. What all the castmembers really thought of each other. Thats basically the whole book though. It is written in this really generic writing thats supposed to have been written by the castmembers. Overall it has some juicy tidbits & dirt on what they thought of each other & situations in the houses but can't compare to the Real Real World book or Ultimate Insiders Guide book which goes all the way up to the Boston season.
MTV Get Off The Air.......2004-05-20
Mtv is such a lame TV station. Doesn't it mean MUSIC Television? I've never seen any music on there. All there is are these stupid reality shows. DON'T BUY THIS BOOK AND DON'T WATCH MTV!!!
All the handwriting is fake!.......1998-07-16
I'm a fan of the Real World, but I feel somehow cheated with this book. I realized halfway through it that none of the handwriting was real. MTV had used clever and no doubt expensive fonts that just look like it. I don't know if if was just recreated based on voice interviews or if their real handwriting wasn't "edgy" enough for MTV, but it sucks. I feel like this is supposed to be a look into what they were thinking and feeling, but it just made the whole thing seem so contrived. All the scraps of paper and seemingly poorly written entries were completely fabricated to skew the readers image of these people even more than the show did. All in all, I thought some of their experiences were interesting and insightful, but the deliberate attempt of MTV to further manipulate the appearances of these people just made me sick.
Basically the same stuff that I saw on the show........1998-07-07
I was very dissapointed in this book. I thought I was going to get all kinds of dirt that they never showed on the T.V. show but with the exception of a few small facts, if you watched the show religously, you will already know most of the contents in this book. Don't waste your money unless you missed a lot from the actual show
THE BEST BOOK IN THE STORE'S ( GO BOSTON CAST ).......1998-03-12
I LOVE THE BOOK IT IS REALLY GOOD !!!!!! THE BEST CAST IS BY FAR WITH GENSSIS AND ELKA AND JASON AND KALHALLA AND EVERYONE ELSE.. Book Description
This textbook addresses students, professionals, lecturers and researchers interested in software product line engineering. With more than 100 examples and about 150 illustrations, the authors describe in detail the essential foundations, principles and techniques of software product line engineering.
The authors are professionals and researchers who significantly influenced the software product line engineering paradigm and successfully applied software product line engineering principles in industry. They have structured this textbook around a comprehensive product line framework.
Software product line engineering has proven to be the paradigm for developing a diversity of software products and software-intensive systems in shorter time, at lower cost, and with higher quality. It facilitates platform-based development and mass customisation. The authors elaborate on the two key principles behind software product line engineering: (1) the separation of software development in two distinct processes, domain and application engineering; (2) the explicit definition and management of the variability of the product line across all development artefacts.
As a student, you will find a detailed description of the key processes, their activities and underlying techniques for defining and managing software product line artefacts. As a researcher or lecturer, you will find a comprehensive discussion of the state of the art organised around the comprehensive framework. As a professional, you will find guidelines for introducing this paradigm in your company and an overview of industrial experiences with software product line engineering.

For the classroom only..........2005-11-30
This book is an excellent classroom book, but not practical for PLE in the field. It does an excellent job of laying out a framework for a PLE process and it does an excellent job of teaching variability. The main problem with the book is that it uses the Orthogonal Variability Model to trace the variability in the project's artifacts, and there are no tools to support an Orthogonal Variability Model. It is a perfect way to teach variability, and the Orthogonal Variability Model works well in a text book context, but would not be practical on a real project.
The book makes reference to SEGOS-VM Tool, which is being developed to support the authors Orthogonal Variability Model, but it is no where to be found on the web.
So I would suggest this book only if you are interested in becoming "book smart" about PLE, it does do an excellent job of teaching the topic, but it's process holds little value for real projects.
