4 out of 5 stars Pleasantly satisfied.......2007-08-26

I got this book following a 3L friend's suggestion, and feel like it's given me a good strategy for studying and approaching exams my first year, as well as an important "insider" information on how to approach future job possibilities. For those also in the thinking about law school or application phase, Miller incorporates real, beneficial advice from both students and Admissions deans. If you are looking for some perspective on what to expect (either before or after you start), pick up a copy.

4 out of 5 stars Good General Information - But Lacks Depth.......2007-08-23

INTRO
I have read many and varied law school preparation books. To be forward, of all the books I have read, I found this one to be the most overrated. It is indeed useful, particularly if this is your first book on law school and you are interested in a very general overview.

PERSONAL SUGGESTION (*warining* personal opinion)
My strongest suggestion for those interested in law school is this: take one or two years off prior to entering law school to 1) adequately prepare and 2) make a determination whether or not you *really* want to do it. Whether you enroll into a graduate program, work, relax, explore, or engage in charitable activities - give yourself some time to pursue your varied interests. If you ever wanted to start a company, see a particular part of the world, or just take some time to think .. I highly suggest you do that prior to entering law school. If you just completed or are about to complete an undergraduate or graduate program, you might not have this opportunity again. Purge those urges and pursue those interests now while you have a chance.

HIGHLIGHTS
The book provides useful information regarding law school from financing your education to law school etiquette (share your class notes; do not boast about anything; avoid gossip; and never discuss grades). Furthermore, the author provides useful insights on applying for jobs to obtaining internships. Many topics are addressed in the book, and I appreciated the perspectives of former law students to hiring partners at variously sized firms. I do not necessarily agree with the author's suggestion on case briefing, however. I think it would be tedious and time-consuming to read cases using variously colored highlighters. It is better to use simply a pen and underline relevant material.

SUMMARY & CONCLUSION
The information in the book lacks depth but makes up for it for its vast breadth concerning prior to law school, while in law school (year 1, 2, and 3) and after law school. I am confident that most people who have an interest in possibly attending law school will find the book useful.

5 out of 5 stars Great law school preparation.......2007-07-30

This book is a must-have before starting law school. It is easy to read and full of useful tips and information. It is a realistic and well-informed guide to law school. It is especially vital for conquering the first year. I highly recommend this book!

4 out of 5 stars Maybe groundbreaking when it first came out...not anymore.......2007-07-27

I just ended my first year of law school, so I've got a pretty good idea of how useful these kinds of books are. I think this book is useful to keep around. If not for the detailed explanation of much of the law school processes, he keeps a pretty upbeat attitude toward law school, and he uses his real name, unlike the author of another 1L advice book. If you have that upbeat attitude, it is probably gonna keep you chugging along when you are staring into the abyss during your first year.

His dreamboat technicolor highlighting mumbo jumbo is not some voodoo magic that you can only get from his book. It's just one more interesting way to study in an organized manner. I've found that since law school studying is different than undergraduate school, I began to really experiment with different styles of learning, and along the way, you're bound to find a sweet spot if you keep working at it.

Despite what people say about law school being a professional school and how important the work is, making some good friends there will really really help. Just stay cool. Don't try too hard to make friends, and don't try too little either. Work with the professors instead of seeing them as obstacles, which in many ways they can be. That's just part of the gauntlet of law school.

So take this book's advice with a grain of salt, and start to figure it out for yourself as you go along. The only real secret is putting in the hours necessary and then some.

5 out of 5 stars Get a head start on law school, and stay ahead..........2007-07-16

As a future 1L (first year law student) I found Robert H. Miller's Law School Confidential to be an invaluable resource full of insight and encouragement. In Law School Confidential, Robert H. Miller takes the reader from the infancy of their aspirations for a legal education through the rigors of law school and ultimately, for those who complete their education, the search for employment.

With sound advice and practical strategies, Robert Miller helps allay some of the fears that plague those about to begin law school. But this book is not only for those of us who've been accepted to our law school of choice. This book reaches out to everyone considering or finishing up his or her legal education. It takes those contemplating law school step by step through the daunting and lengthy application process. If you find yourself in the midst of your 1L or 2L year, and are looking for a useful guide to studying, test taking, or even the search for meaningful summer work, it covers this as well. And finally, just when you think it's over, when you've donned your cap and gown and crossed over from law student to lawyer, Law School Confidential guides you in your preparation for the bar.

The tenor of the book can be intimidating and there is a certain underlying motivation to set the student "straight" regarding what they're walking into. Though I don't believe the intent is to frighten people away from law school. Instead, Mr. Miller merely hopes to honestly convey the academic challenge that waits, which can often filter into ones personal life. That being said it is important to note that his experience is exactly that, his, which he recognizes and further agrees that each students experience is unique.

Admittedly, I have yet to begin my legal studies and thus putting Robert Miller's advice into action has not been possible. But his book has used the experiences of literally dozens of mentors who've navigated these waters and made it to the other side. While the nuances of my education will surely be different, I feel confident that Law School Confidential has provided me with a strong framework and foundation for success.

This book is by students, for students. So take advantage of it.

      Book Description

The transition from socialism in Eastern Europe is not an isolated event, but part of a larger shift in world capitalism: the transition from Fordism to flexible (or neoliberal) capitalism. Using a blend of ethnography and economic geography, Elizabeth C. Dunn shows how management technologies like niche marketing, accounting, audit, and standardization make up flexible capitalism's unique form of labor discipline. This new form of management constitutes some workers as self-auditing, self-regulating actors who are disembedded from a social context while defining others as too entwined in social relations and unable to self-manage.

Privatizing Poland examines the effects privatization has on workers' self-concepts; how changes in "personhood" relate to economic and political transitions; and how globalization and foreign capital investment affect Eastern Europe's integration into the world economy. Dunn investigates these topics through a study of workers and changing management techniques at the Alima-Gerber factory in Rzeszow, Poland, formerly a state-owned enterprise, which was privatized by the Gerber Products Company of Fremont, Michigan.

Alima-Gerber instituted rigid quality control, job evaluation, and training methods, and developed sophisticated distribution techniques. The core principle underlying these goals and strategies, the author finds, is the belief that in order to produce goods for a capitalist market, workers for a capitalist enterprise must also be produced. Working side-by-side with Alima-Gerber employees, Dunn saw firsthand how the new techniques attempted to change not only the organization of production, but also the workers' identities. Her seamless, engaging narrative shows how the employees resisted, redefined, and negotiated work processes for themselves.

        Book Description

In recent years, the economy of the Caribbean has become almost completely dependent on international tourism. And today one of the chief ways that foreign visitors there seek pleasure is through prostitution. While much has been written on the female sex workers who service these tourists, Caribbean Pleasure Industry shifts the focus onto the men. Drawing on his groundbreaking ethnographic research in the Dominican Republic, Mark Padilla discovers a complex world where the global political and economic impact of tourism has led to shifting sexual identities, growing economic pressures, and new challenges for HIV prevention. In fluid prose, Padilla analyzes men who have sex with male tourists, yet identify themselves as “normal” heterosexual men and struggle to maintain this status within their relationships with wives and girlfriends. Padilla’s exceptional ability to describe the experiences of these men will interest anthropologists, but his examination of bisexuality and tourism as much-neglected factors in the HIV/AIDS epidemic makes this book essential to anyone concerned with health and sexuality in the Caribbean or beyond.

              Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Complete, but Inconvenient.......2005-07-12

This is a Fakebook of the vocals, not the music so much. So no musical bridges, and it's aimed at solo instruments rather than piano or guitar. It does have all (or at least a very large amount of) his songs, but it's the vocal part it has, with a few areas of instrumental notes called out.

The biggest problems with this book are that it has a glued binding, so it won't lie flat easily without loosening the pages, and that the songs most often begin on the right-page and require a page flip even when only two pages long. The music is good, and it has a lot of great stuff he wrote but wasn't famous for such as "Because the Night" (made famous by 10,000 Maniacs) and "Blinded By The Light". But be prepared for some annoyances due to the binding and layout.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT GUITAR BOOK.......2003-12-13

I found this book with my dad's old guitar.....I started reading it and I realized that I had just found a gold mine.... I loved it 'cause it helped me improve my guitar skills and I enjoyed practicing because I love Springsteen's songs..... His work is known to be excellent and this book just goes to prove it.......

I think it's a great gift for anybody who plays the guitar (even if you don't master the instrument, this book could actually help you)!!!

2 out of 5 stars Useful book, though somewhat uninformative........2001-10-17

When I purchased this book, I did not know exactly what "fakebook" style meant. Apparently, it means that the notes correspond not to the notes actually played by the guitar, but to the notes sung by Bruce. Personally, I was rather disappointed with this discovery, and had hoped for a more in-depth transcription of the music. The chords and chord charts are useful if you just can't quite figure out exactly which chord is being played in certain songs, although a lot of Bruce's early stuff is pretty easy to figure out by ear, if you've got an ear for music. Overall, I've given the book two stars, however, in all fairness, I think that any review of a book like this will be influenced by the reviewer's experience level as a guitarist. This book would be great for beginners and lower-level intermediate players, or for players who just want to learn the basic chord structure of the songs. If you want to learn solos, or the more nuanced stuff that you can't always pick out of the background, look elsewhere.

                    Book Description

What role does consumption play in Japanese lives that are more than study, work, and shopping? How have those lives changed since World War II as Japan has wrestled with the meaning of white-collar careers, increasing independence for women, changing family values, a shrinking birth rate, and an aging population? Japan's first think tank devoted to the study of consumer behavior was created to answer these questions. In this book, an anthropologist reads its research, exploring Japan through the eyes of Japanese researchers and discovering patterns of change that are both uniquely Japanese and shared by consumers in other advanced industrial nations.

                    5 out of 5 stars Consuming Japan.......2003-09-07

McCreery is an anthropologist who has spent years working in the Japanese advertising industry -- not working in the sense of anthropological field work, but actually earning a living in the Japanese advertising industry. His book draws both on his insights into the industry and its products from this perspective, and his anthropological training. It is a data-rich book that ingeneously makes use of advertising or marketing research to create portraits of what advertisers think about different generations or sub-sets of Japanese consumers. It is a fascinating mosaic of materials and in many ways an experimental ethnography. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding Japanese generations.......2002-03-20

You, as well as I, or lot of people more have heard stereotypes of Japan and its people, for sure. Maybe you use such stereotypes when talking about any topic on Japan. However, there are very good explanations for them, and I recommend you this book to know such basics.

In the first half, you'll read about Japan's history and the evolution of its society. In the second, you'll use those arguments to understand the behaviour of the groups of Japanese identified through the book.

The book set clearly two distinctions:
                    1. Talk about groups of Japanese, not "the Japanese," that is, don't use stereotypes.
                    2. Consider the time. Any argument is valid only in a certain period of time.

On that second point, the book was edited in 2001. It has arguments for 2005 or so. After that, you should look for new arguments.

5 out of 5 stars Japanese consumers explained.......2000-06-08

The expertise gained from years of experience in Japanese advertising is supplemented with interviews and translations from Hakuhodo's think-tank newsletter on consumer mindsets. Highly recommended.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Very Worthwhile Book.......2000-05-29

Japanese Consumer Behavior is a challenging book. There are multiple frames of reference: an analytical outsider, analyzing insiders analyzing their own culture, and changing trends within that culture. And that is just the approach. Then there is the data, relatively rapid changes across generations within a culture in response to major post-World War II, economic, gender-role, urbanizing, and, well, other real big changes. In essence there is a real fine grained analysis coupled with an analysis of the larger trends. And then there is the weird sense of dislocation, of finding "sneaker middles" in Japan bearing an almost but not quite resemblence to "yuppies" and trying to put a finger on what that "almost" but "not quite" is. The traditional anthropological road map one acquires does not apply very well to this book, hence it is an active reader book. If anyone is interested in what anthropology is going to be like in the future this is a good place to start.

                      Book Description

A study of the changing face of television news, this book examines both the transmitted screen product and the newsgathering process. It is an analysis of how television reporting has changed in the age of rolling news and an examination of how TV news can affect the course of current affairs worldwide. From the fall of the Berlin wall, through the Gulf War, to the O J Simpson chase and trial, TV news is now--more than ever before--enmeshed in the events it covers. Brent MacGregor, a former producer and director, provides sharp insight into the business.

5 out of 5 stars Adobe InDesign CS Review.......2005-01-04

The book is very well organized, progresses logically, and is well illustrated. It provides appropriate explanations of basic graphic design terminology as well. It will be excellent for an introductory survey class, especially for schools using the Adobe Creative Suite as their creative and publishing software base.

The overview explanations of each activity are informative, the following exercises clearly demonstrate the information, and I particularly like the summary statements at the conclusion of each exercise that remind the user of what was accomplished.

Another attractive feature is that the chapters in this book link to the advanced texts in this series so that students may progress without retracing their steps.

I have used two other very popular texts for this software and find Adobe InDesign CS, Photoshop, and Illustrator CSDesign Professional to be at least equivalent if not superior.

Excellent book!! I learned so much from this fun, easy-to-understand book. I had been working with adobe illustrator for a year and a half before I decided to get this book and take a course. Turns out there was so much more to adobe illustrator than I had realized. This book is beautifully written and I want to give the author a huge "Thank you" for writing such a great learning tool.
