Why Americans don't know their History .......2007-10-23
Why do most Americans know so little of history, of geography, of the world outside the US ? This is what Europeans often ask after talking to Americans. And why do they think theirs is the greatest country in the world - after admitting they don't know much about other countries ?
James Loewen's book has the answers ... American history textbooks are distorting or omitting parts of the past. Instead they are indoctrinating students
- to worship authority (all the heroes from C Columbus to W H Harrison - surely you remember Mr Harrison ?),
- to believe in endless progress and unlimited opportunities (rags to riches - "the incurable optimism"), and
- to conform (questioning, let alone criticism, is un-American, if not Marxist - well, make that communist).
Europeans have had a lot of admiration and enthusiasm for America, ever since the Declaration of Independence of 1776. This helped to trigger the French Revolution in 1792 and was a clarion call for many oppressed nations in Europe. That's why the French in their gratitude gifted the Statue of Liberty to America in 1886 (I wonder how many Americans know that). America had a lot of friends in Europe at that time.
Today, not much of that is left. And the Americans wonder why (well, at least some; most can't be bothered). They can not possibly understand what happened, because their history books, their parents, their media, their churches keep telling them that they "are the most generous country on earth ... God is on our side ... a land where all men are equal". So, they ask "What's wrong with that." It's breathtaking in its naivety.
Mr Leuwen has helped me understand how this has come about. And it is a sad story. Because young Americans are missing out. Their history has as much drama, highlights and low points as any European country. And they could learn from that (if they can be bothered).
Thank you, Mr Leuwen, for explaining a few things for me. Also, I would hope that your book encourages a few Americans to find out more about their own history.

I am not sure that everything in this book is true, but it is interesting reading. I think on some items the teacher was telling the truth and the author had an opposing view.
Historical Essay, NOT an easy read!.......2007-10-14
I absolutely loved this book and read it in 2 days. But, I am also a history major, love history, and can read dry lectures. As a fair warning to anyone who is looking to buy this book: don't expect to find fun little quirks and trivia in this book, and don't expect it to be an easy read! It is a college professor's serious and well-researched book, geared toward other historians and scholars. IT IS DRY, IT HAS LOTS OF DATA, IT HAS LOTS OF FOOTNOTES.
If you ARE a history buff, you will probably already know all of the "lies" in the book, but it is still an excellent read. You will be outraged at the lack of ethics of publishers and historians paid to pretend to write textbooks. If you are a history teacher, you DEFINITELY need to read this book and question what your textbooks are (or are not) teaching.
Lastly, if you are an American who still believes the US is THE GREATEST NATION in the world, or THE US IS THE WORLD PROTECTOR, or THE US IS ALWAYS RIGHT, you need to pick up this book right away and re-educate yourself with the facts your old high school social studies book left out.

Although at times unsettling, the purpose of this book is to encourage the questioning of the indoctrinated a one-sided viewpoint of American History.
If you have a cultural diverse group of friends this book may help you understand their indifferences with American History.
A true American accepts both positive and negative parts of history. We don't have to make facts disappear. Acceptance doesn't mean liking, enjoying or condoning. In accepting the truth we can evolve as a nation, but by denying facts we will forever be stuck in cultural wars.
Not a page-turner, not to crazy with the writing style, but interesting.

I performed in this musical as a wickersham brother, so i know how many songs were in this show and how many songs were included in the songbook, and only about 48% of the songs from the play are in this book! Some of my favorite ones aren't even in there! However, it does have some of the songs I like, like "Oh the thinks you can think!".

This is a wonderful musical, with lots of very fun and catchy music. I own this piano book, but am a little disappointed that more songs were not included. Seussical has SO many songs, and there are only 13 in this book. Many other piano books for musicals include ALL the songs in the show, so this is a bit of a disappointment.

My 5 year old son and I saw this show over the summer and we gave him this soundtrack for his birthday in October. He loves listening to it and remembering what he saw on stage, as do I. And he loves expalining the details to his older brother who did not see the show, but loves the music equally as much. A lively soundtrack that I don't tire of listing too in the car. We all love it.

This musical is up there with Joseph and the Technicolor dreamcoat. I Love listening to it! It turns Dr. Suesses books into somthing that I can sing to which is really cool. I encourage everyone to listen to this musical I guarentee you will love it and be instantly hooked!

Ragtime has some of the most glorious songs on Broadway!.......2000-08-31
I had an urge to play some Ragtime tunes on my piano, so I bought this book and began to play. It has the vocal selections along with the sheet music. I find that the sheet music consists of many many chords, making it more difficult, but it's still great fun to play and sing! Great for auditions!
Ragtime has awesome music, and though not all of the best songs are in this, most of them are. My favorite song from Ragtime is Wheels of a Dream, and I was SO happy to see it in here.
One thing I enjoyed about the Ragtime music book was that it wasn't chopped up. When I say that, I mean from experience with other piano books. Many books with chop up the song like from movies for instance. The songs are translated and arranged horribly, but I loved that since a lot of the music from the musical was in piano solo, the music plays EXACTLY the same as you would've heard on Broadway!
Overall, each song is wonderful and this music is an absolute delight to play! Enjoy!
Where's "The Show Biz"?.......2000-06-18
I love this book and have used it many times for auditions/concerts etc. However, one of my most favorite selections from the Original 1996 Toronto recording is the song between Nesbit and Houdini called "The Show Biz". Besides being hilarious, it's the perfect duet to open a concert with. I was extremely disappointed to find that this book didn't include that song. Does anyone know where that sheet music can be found?

Two wonderful songs are missing!.......1999-06-13
I think the songs chosen to represent this book were excellent, however, my two favorite songs in the show: "The Night that Goldman Spoke at Union Square" and "Atlantic City" are two songs which strongly express the musical's powerful vocal potential. Not only do I know several people who would like to get their hands on this sheet music, but I myself have been racking my brain for those two songs inparticular, and was disapointed to find they were missing form this book.

The Steps to Genius.......2001-02-26
When Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty released their magnificent piece of theatre, 'Ragtime' as a follow-up to 'Once on this Island', theatre people across the world knew that a new force had joined the decades old Lloyd-Webber/ Sondheim competition for audiences. However, it is in the privacy of ones home that these two musical, and the preceeding one, 'Lucky Stiff', show their aptitude. 'Lucky Stiff' is no 'Ragtime', but it is easy to see, through songs like 'It was Nice' and 'Dogs Versus You', how this duo has developed a magnificent symmetry between catchy tunes and powerful, poetic lyrics. The humour inherent in Lucky STiff's plot, the story of a young man whose uncle dies and leaves him a large sum of money, only to find out via cassette tape that his past uncle expects him to take the decorated corpse around Monte Carlo on a final holiday, leads to few opportunities for the songs to provide real dramatic resonance, the very thing that makes Ragtime such a worthwhile listening experience. While Lucky STiff provided a strong foundation upon which to develop the musical skills Ahren and Flaherty are renowned for, it was only, and will remail the first step in that journey. It cannot, therefore, be rated as highly as the others, but is still a worthwhile addition to your musical theatre collection.

I got this book so I could have sheet music for musical auditions. It's a great book to have if you're a musical performer or simply just a lover of Ahrens and Flaherty's tunes and plays (i.e. Once on This Island). It's a great addition to my theatrical and musical archive.

A video game is half-real: we play by real rules while imagining a fictional world. We win or lose the game in the real world, but we slay a dragon (for example) only in the world of the game. In this thought-provoking study, Jesper Juul examines the constantly evolving tension between rules and fiction in video games. Discussing games from Pong to The Legend of Zelda, from chess to Grand Theft Auto, he shows how video games are both a departure from and a development of traditional non-electronic games. The book combines perspectives from such fields as literary and film theory, computer science, psychology, economic game theory, and game studies, to outline a theory of what video games are, how they work with the player, how they have developed historically, and why they are fun to play.
Locating video games in a history of games that goes back to Ancient Egypt, Juul argues that there is a basic affinity between games and computers. Just as the printing press and the cinema have promoted and enabled new kinds of storytelling, computers work as enablers of games, letting us play old games in new ways and allowing for new kinds of games that would not have been possible before computers. Juul presents a classic game model, which describes the traditional construction of games and points to possible future developments. He examines how rules provide challenges, learning, and enjoyment for players, and how a game cues the player into imagining its fictional world. A Fresh Approach to Videogame Theory.......2007-10-05
Very good book on the theory of videogames. Accessible, innovative, thoughtful, and centered on concrete (and popular) examples. He also includes lots of screenshots, which is good.
Juul takes what might be called a "grassroots" approach to game studies, not bringing heavy disciplinary baggage to colonize the area, but instead trying to build a formal theory of games from the ground up. He takes his lead primarily from game and culture theorists like Huizinga, Caillois, Crawford and Sutton-Smith rather than from literary theory or media studies. But he really charts his own course and stakes out his own ground in many ways.
He has a strong interest in game rules, which has led some to criticize him for being overly formalistic, but I find this a refreshing and interesting contrast to the more standard "new media" approach to video games.

In Half-Real, Jesper Juul presents us a not only a new definition for games (computer-based or not), but also an original perspective on videogames and how they operate. Going beyond the 'Ludology x Narratology' discussion, Juul balances the 'Rules' and 'Fiction' elements of video games, emphasizing how they relate to each other.
The book is very insightful, containing information that will be valuable to game designers, academics, gamers and new media enthusiasts. Although you could find some of the its content on Juul's previous articles available on the internet, they are much more complete polished in Haf-Real.
