4 out of 5 stars Lots of practice tests.......2007-09-06

I have not yet taken the LSAT, I've actually gone on a different path, but I did purchase this book when I was considering Law School and the book has a lot of practice tests in it which are very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Useful; note the difference in cover color.......2007-09-04

I've always used past practice exams as my primary study aids, from the SAT to AP to GRE. So I find these 10 exams (from Oct. 1999 to Oct. 2002) pretty useful. I plan to do the 2002+ exams after I'm done with these. The main reason I'm writing this, though, is to point out that my version (which I bought at the end of 2006) has a purple/red cover rather than the white/blue cover shown in the product image. After comparing the contents of the two, I'm pretty sure they're the same thing-- just in case anyone was wondering.

5 out of 5 stars No surprises.......2007-06-20

I did not much enjoy the time I spent with this book, but it's exactly what it claims to be. In the end, I decided to take a low-end test prep course instead of studying on my own, and I didn't need the book anymore.

5 out of 5 stars Official Preptests...the way to go.......2007-03-08

Without taking these official tests, my score would have been much lower. Practice, practice, practice. By the time I'd reached the last few tests in this book, my score on each test in the book was the exact same as what I ended up with for my actual LSAT score.

5 out of 5 stars LSAT Preptests.......2007-01-05

Ten practice tests provided variety for scheduling intellectual infrastructure sessions for students preparing for the LSAT. Format of the texts and availability of answer keys made for ease of switching from section to section as students honed academic skills.

    Book Description

This study challenges the uncritical equation of advancement with success. As a participant observer at a family-style restaurant in New Jersey, Greta Paules reveals the strategies that experienced waitresses employ to improve their own positions rather than aspiring toward management. Through the voices of some aggressive, determined, tough, and resilient women, Paules confronts stereotypical characterizations of waitresses.

Paules finds that certain unique features of the restaurant industry—the tipping system, chaotic work environment, chronic shortages of labor and supplies, and the manager's role as a fill-in man—allow waitresses to manipulate their work environment to protect their own interests. The downgrading of the managerial role in this restaurant has rendered advancement meaningless. Knowing that the "help wanted" sign is permanently posted, the waitresses refuse to submit to management's dictates, to "take junk" from rude or hostile customers, or to internalize the negative self-image usually associated with waitressing.

The colorful and often amusing comments by the women Paules interviewed indicate that they have developed an arsenal of subtle but undeniably effective tactics to combat the exploitive elements of the job, to maximize tips, and to secure the boss's attention to their needs.

4 out of 5 stars Dishing Out the Goods.......2000-04-13

The book, which I read for a feminism class, actually turned out to be one that I liked. The book focuses on a small, truck-stop restaurant called Route. The book tells stories of women's work in the restaurant and everyday problems that they face.

Most people never realize some things about waitresses if they've never been one. For example, waitresses' minimum wage is about 3 dollars less than that of normal jobs. They are expected to make up the difference in tips. After reading material such as this, sympathy for waitresses will go out even more. These are the same people that have to put up with rude and picky customers.

Managers seem to have it almost worse. Although, managers are usually thought of as having a higher and better position, this is very untrue in the restaurant business. Managers get minimum wage, but no tips, sometimes making less than the waiters. And because the turn-over rate is so high for managers, they've often work fewer time than the waitresses, which makes them seem as less of an authoritative figure. And, the manager has to deal with personnel problems and fill in for anyone who doesn't show up for work, or who quits on the spot. It's actually much tougher than one would think.

The books tells of how much waitresses put up with and the low wages that the make. I would recommend this book, if just for that fact that it opens up people's eyes to the fact that waitresses really do depend on tips - so don't stiff them. It's also a wonderful book to read just for enjoyment because it keeps your attention with different stories and interviews of several ladies, so in that sense, it's almost more of a story than a boring book of research.

Wasted my time on picking this up. However, it does make you wonder if you could be a writer and make money writing about the top ten reasons not to get a job. This is just another example of bad writing making money. It is all about the allure of the title. If you tick a few people off you have a winner. Heck it is a parody what else can we expect. For just being about KSU it is not. This guy wrote 303 things I hate about KU, Michigan, Georgia, Kentucky, and even Notre Dame...just to name a few.

Don't be hatin on K-State. If its anyone it should be KU or OU. KU made it to their first bowl game in 15 years last year. Ok, maybe basketball goes well for them. But thats the only sport you can be proud of at KU. They suck at everything else.

A laugh-out-loud masterpiece. I recommend this gem to anyone who has ever met a KSU grad.

1 out of 5 stars Insufferabe -- One Star Because I Could Not Give It Zero.......2003-12-14

I found this in a local bookstore. Needless to say I would not spend a dime on it, but had to look through it. As a graduate of Kansas State University (M.S., 1978) I have to say that any publisher who would entertain such a worthless diatribe on ANY institution of higher education -- yes, even K.U. or Mizzou -- is as much an idiot as the author. Kansas State, particularly in the past twenty years, has become a distinguished public university in terms of the number of Truman, Wilson, etc. scholars (rivaling Stanford, Duke, and the Ivy League). It's debate teams have been nationally ranked. It's football program and women's athletics have gone from dismal to highly competitive, indeed respected. The university has made a profound investment in its educational and athletic facilties. Certainly Manhattan, Kansas is not a mecca of urban riches; nevertheless, it is an outstanding college town and a fine community. If you're in to bashing rather than building, waste your money on this book. Otherwise, donate it to the educational institution of your choice.

              1 out of 5 stars What's wrong with K-State?.......2000-08-20

I don't understand why this guy doesn't like K-State at all. I am only a Junior in High School, but I hope to go to K-State once I graduate. I've only heard good things about the school, and they're ranked, I think, 7th in the U.S. with Yale, Harvard, Stanton, etc. I plan on being a Wildcat some day, and I sure didn't like what this guy had to say about them.

On page 30 the author reveals a "well-kept secret". JFK's first wife was Malcom Durie. His father Joseph P. Kennedy had enough money to squelch information about this marriage. It is doubtful that even Jackie knew. (I can guarantee you that Nixon did not know.)

Yet, on the Internet, I could find no search results on any of these things. Still, this is an interesting book. The author was an attorney with the Justice Department so his revelation should have some validitity.

3 out of 5 stars shaken, not stirring.......2006-07-26

Ken Blanchard's little One Minute Manager books define a genre.

Neither riveting reading nor high-stakes illumination, they simply get a message across effectively to the management reader who is not too concerned with aesthetics. Even the illustrations are garden-variety basic.

Yet these books have sold millions and they work.

The One Minute Manager Balances Work and Life presents the usual contrived encounter between the One Minute Manager and another of the usual subjects, this time the Professor. Somewhat off the beaten path, this time it is the One Minute Manager Himself who is desperately in need. Since we last saw him contentedly setting the organization world right, he has foolishly transformed himself into an overweight, out-of-breath victim of his own success.

                Bad One Minute Manager!

This gives him the chance to narrate his own turn-around process, a conversion that I must admit I find rather inspiring.

Along the way one is treated to the usual locked doors when he tries to slip away from responsibility for the situation. This habit of assigning personal responsibility is perhaps one of the keys to the success of this series.

If you need to balance work and life, pick up one of these little books on the cheap.

4 out of 5 stars Title is deceiving.......2005-12-17

I'm guessing the book was retitled to what is now to attract more readers. However, the content doesn't match the title. This is all about the importance of staying fit and being healthy. If that's what you're looking for, this book is for you. But if you're looking to balance work/life, there are better books to purchase.

5 out of 5 stars The One Minute Manager Takes Care of Himself!.......2003-04-26

This book was originally published under the title "The One Minute Manager Gets Fit." An even better title would have been "The One Minute Manager Takes Care of Himself." The entire volume emphasizes the importance of taking of oneself so that effectiveness in all other areas of life will be at a maximum.

There are four components presented here to insure a fit, healthy life: autonomy, connectedness, perspective and tone. Autonomy pertains to getting control of one's personal schedule so that there is enough time for self-care. Connectedness refers to having a strong, interpersonal support network to keep on track with proper fitness, nutrition, etc. Perspective pertains to how well one views his own life. Tone refers to the actual physical condition and health of a person's body, mind and emotions.

This title should be at the top of the list for "One Minute" fans. The format is the same as all the other books in the series and the principles are life-changing. For some persons, this book may even be life-saving!

5 out of 5 stars Setting the tone.......2002-11-12

For a change, the One Minute Manager is a student in this book. Despite his professional success and fame, he realizes that he has neglected his own physical well being over the years. Then comes a professor who teaches him to put physical fitness first.

There is a simple questionnaire (The Professor's dozen) that the one minute manager needs to answer. It applies to all of us. Depending on the score on this, one may decide the true state of ones "Tone", the word that is used to describe the physical well being of the individual. The four parameters (or moderators that prevent stress) responsible for sustained success in work and life are:

                1. Autonomy : The availability of many choices that give good control in life
                2. Connectedness : Strong positive relationship at home, at work and in the community
                3. Perspective: The direction, purpose and passion about what one is doing.
                4. Tone: The feeling about the body, energy level, physical well being and appearance.

In a remarkable way, the clear connection between Tone as the enabler for the other three moderators is brought out in this book. The illustrations that support the concepts are excellent.

Organizations spend billions of dollars in health care and suffer productivity loss due to the lack of physical well being of their employees. Employees on the other hand are sacrificing their health in the process of achieving career advancement. "In early life, people give up their health to gain wealth. Then, later in life they give up some wealth to regain health."

This book is for HR managers and employees at all levels to help achieve substantial gains for the Organization; through employee well being that needs serious attention; as much as we do for career planning.

5 out of 5 stars Straightforward and easy to undestand.......2002-04-03

This book was originally published in 1986 as "The One Minute Manager Gets Fit" and is well worth every minute you take to read it! It is written in the classic "one minute manager" style and shows you exactly how you can balance your life by adjusting your lifestyle. I enjoyed the easy to read layout and found it to be a quick, yet revolutionary, read. I picked it up on a lark and I'm glad I did. It's never to late (or too early) to start becoming healthy. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to get their life in order, but thinks they are too busy to dedicate the time to start.

4 out of 5 stars a longer discussion of Trojans would have been nice.......2005-09-14

Huseby walks through many instances of flawed web code. Client side and server side. All of these have been covered before in other forums and books, but he offers a clear exposition of the dangers.

Take SQL injection. If you do not have your web server filter the user's input in a web page submitted by her browser, and you blithely pass her string to your SQL engine, you are asking for grief. You're begging for a cracker to stuff a SQL command script to sabotage or exacavate your database. Thus too for shell command injection, where your server might inadvertantly execute that as a shell command. Remember to filter user input!

Cross site scripting and Trojans are also explained. Unfortunately, while the Trojan discussion is understandable, it is far too short.

There is no discussion of antiphishing methods. Though in the Trojan chapter, an example fake email would qualify as phishing. Perhaps the author saw no technical solution for phishing. And this book is about technical solutions.

                    4 out of 5 stars A great tool. .......2004-12-01

Aside from the publication errors ( 2 chapter 2's and part of chapter 1 at the end of chapter 2 - arg). The books is full of great examples and useful information for developer's and IT security auditors. If nothing else it helps so provide simple examples of possible exploits. (And given the publication errors, my copy is a colletor's item...) Cheers!!!

                    5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2004-08-07

Security is a serious issue and education of the developer about writing secure code is extremely important. There are a lot of books out there that write either about how to configure your servers or about the various security technologies (cryptography, WSE etc) - this is not unimportant but it is incomplete because it ignores weaknesses introduced through coding practices.
The author manages a tight and very readable book that is addressed at the software developer. It can be read in about a day or afternoon (if you happen to be stranded at an airport lounge). I will be suggesting it to be one of our standard literature titles on the development floor.

5 out of 5 stars Focused info for developers more than security pros.......2004-03-17

This book is similar in many respects to Web Hacking: Attacks and Defense (ISBN 0201761769). While that book was aimed at security professionals who needed to understand the exposures and vulnerabilities in web systems that were commonly exploited by the bad guys and gals, this book is aimed more at developers.

Like for former book, this one systematically covers exposures and vulnerabilities, and provides remedies at the code level. What sets this book apart is every component of a modern web site, from web server to backend database is covered, problem areas from a developer's perspective are highlighted, and solutions for resolving the problem areas given. I like this book because developers, from casual hobbyists to professionals, will easily grasp the information. More importantly, the material is not insultingly simple to experienced developers, nor is it over the head of less experienced ones.

Another reason I like this book is in systematically uncovering exposures the QA team can also use this book as a sourcebook for developing a baseline set of test cases that will catch security-related problems during acceptance, functional qualification, or regression test cycles.

In my opinion not only should web developers (including DBAs) and QA professionals read this book, but it should also be adopted by development organizations and projects as a part of coding standards.
