This book brings to light what many wish to suppress. The name calling and ridicule of other reviews only shows that this book has truth. When people feel they have to slander instead of argue or let people discover the truth for themselves, you know a book must have something to offer. It doesn't take much time to see the faith of the founders. If those who dislike this book would read the second Federalist, any of John Wither-spoon's writings, George Washington's farewell address and on and on. When people disregard what is argued in this book, they show that they are not students of the Founders writings. Every Prof of American history I have had acknowledges their faith.

I have researched this subject quite extensively as a PHD of History. David Barton is right on track here. As I look at the other insulting reviews of this book, I can only shake my head at modern polictics attacking the truth of history. Yes, Mr. Barton is a christian. And, yes, people attack him for telling history as it actually was simply to further their modern political views. Stop fighting over today's politics and open your mind to the actual past...an actual past that Mr. Barton tells with candor and honestly from PRIMARY sources. Recommended for historians and people looking for the truth...not for modern political hacks.

It's great political fiction but, like most, it is designed only to energize the true believer. Nothing new here but craftily written. Scholarship is suspect and cherry-picking quotes won't help his cause. Little short on primary sources and clumsy interpretation of the ones listed. For the particulars of the scholarship deficits see Chris Rodda's review below. Barton's scholarship has been questioned before, most acutely in his book "The Myth of Separation." His premise that "religion is the basis and foundation of government" relies on a distorted interpretation of a passage from James Madison's "Memorial and Remonstrance." What Madison really said was that individual freedoms, like the free exercise of religion, are the basis and foundation of government- not religion itself. These distortions serve no one well, least of all those trying to discover the philosophical underpinnings of the American Revolution which was, of course, decidely secular. All in all, fine for the person looking to validate his/her own religiosity but more smoke than light for those genuinely interested in the truth.

We shouldn't be surprised, that a luminary of the Christian Right engages in such blatant hypocrisy. He has to revise history in order to support his claims of historical revisionism.

How many times have we seen this kind of hypocrisy from the Christian Right? How many times have we seen their leaders preach one thing and then practice the exact opposite?

The Christian Right is a movement that rejects mainstream science (evolutionary biology, geology, cosmology and environmental science). If they feel comfortable denying the most fundamental laws of physics and biology, they won't have any problem denying the most fundamental principles of Constitutional History and Law.

The foundation for ALL law in the US is the Constitution. That is the contract between the US Government and We The People.

"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

The ONLY word with ANY POSSIBLE religious connotation in the ORIGINAL US Constitution is the word "ordain". And that refers to the power of The People to ORDAIN the Government they have formed. There is not one, single mention of the word "God", nor is the there any reference to it in the ENTIRE Constitution.

The Founding Fathers were well educated and worldly men. They were quite aware of the fact that their's was not the only religion practiced in the world or even in the United States, If they had intended the US to be a Christian Nation, they would have mentioned it at least once in the founding documents of the nation.

The closest they came to ANY invocation of a deity is in the Declaration of Independence....and even then, they REFUSED to call it "God". But, even that weak reference is irrelevant, because the Declaration of Independence merely declares that the Colonies are independent of Great Britain. It wasn't intended to create a basis for the laws of the new nation.

Their first attempt to create a basis for law were the Articles of Confederation. These Articles did not make a single, solitary mention of a deity or of a Christ. When the Articles were found to be insufficient, it wasn't because they made no mention of gods or their children. When the Founding Fathers discarded the Articles in favor of the Constitution, they continued to leave gods and their children out of the document.

The only mention of religion in the documents that the Founding Fathers all agreed upon is in the 1st Amendment:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances"

To claim that the US is a Christian Nation is to claim that the Founding Fathers intended the law to respect that establishment of religion. It's pure nonsense.....the exact kind of nonsense that permits one to believe that the Universe is only 6000 years old....or the kind of nonsense that permits one to believe that, if they are martyred while killing Infidels in the name of Allah, they will go to Paradise.

Yes, the only difference between the Islamic and Christian Fundies are the books they read. We should be fearful of nuclear armed Islamic Fundamentalists....but we should be terrified of nuclear armed Christian Fundamentalists. The Islamic Fundies would never be able to get their hands on more than a handful of nuclear weapons, but if the Christian Fundies get their man in the White House, then they'd have control of the ENTIRE US nuclear arsenal. How long would it take for them to convinced themselves, that their "God" had given them that power to "cleanse the world" and bring about their 'prophesied' "End Times", so they could have their "Rapture"?

The greatest threat to Western Civilization isn't Islamic fascism, the greatest threat to Western Civilization is Christian fascism. Christian fascism is at the root of all the outrages that the Bush Administration has perpetrated against the landmarks of Western Civilization. Christian fascism PROUDLY stands opposed to the ideals of secular law embodied by the US Constitution and the ideals of international law that are embodied by the UN and the Geneva Conventions.

Like their Islamic brethren, Christian fascists believe that they are above human laws. They believe that they can lie, cheat, steal and even kill: just as long as it is done in service to their gods. This book proves that they won't hesitate to revise US history to further their CRUSADE to turn the US into a Christian Republic.

Anyone who has read even a little history of Thomas Jefferson would know that he cut the Bible up to make his own Bible. He left out the Old Testment as irrelevant mythology. He left out the New Testament, which he saw as a perversion of Jesus's message. He then combed through the four gospels, eliminating any story that had to do with miracles, resurrection, virgin births, angels, etc. and came to what he described as the "diamonds" in the "dunghill"-the basic teachings of Jesus. Despite that evidence (you can buy a copy of Jefferson's Bible), David Barton is the type of "historian" who will still insist that Jefferson wanted the Bible to be used as a text for public schools. Just a little reason would tell you that claim makes no sense. However, if you don't know your history, Barton will get away with this and much more. If you are a serious history reader who likes their facts presented without an agenda driving their presentation, then please avoid this book. Or, buy a copy and do your own research on every issue he writes about. It doesn't take long to find the errors and you'll learn a lot in the process.

      Ever since I read this book, I've become a Landrum fan in the highest order. This book is well researched and followed a criteria that made the stories more fascinating and mentally satisfying. He chose these women based on their merit as oppose to their inheritance of any kind...in other words the quintessential Rags to Riches story. I live for those stories.

      If you are looking for books that commend heroes such as Horatio Alger in a modern form, Female Genius is the book for you. Not only does it provide a comprehensive overview of what makes a Genius tick, it also illustrates individual strengths these women possess. If you are a parent and have daughters..this book is a MUST READ especially for fathers.

      Who are they? Lillian Vernon, Oprah Winfrey, Golda Meir, Jane Fonda, Estee Lauder, Madonna, Ayn Rand, Gloria Steinem, Margaret Thatcher, Mary Kay Ash, Liz Claiborne, Maria Callas, and Linda Wachner. Landrum devotes a separate chapter to each but first, in Chapters 1-7, he discusses the following:

      Self-Esteem, Self-Image, and Self-Confidence

      Birth Order, Childhood Transience, Role Models, and Mentors

      Education, Intelligence, and Knowledge

      Creative Renegades Go Where Others Fear to Tread!

      Professional versus Personal Dichotomy

      Crisis, Mania, and Creativity

      Personality Traits and Temperament

      As he did in another book (Profiles of Genius), Landrum's strategy is to create a cohesive and comprehensive frame-of-reference within which to discuss his selections. (These first seven chapters, all by themselves, are well worth the cost of the book.) He assigns to each a dominant characteristic. For example, Mary Kay Ash is "A Confident Charismatic"), Madonna is "Psychosexually Driven", and Linda Wachner is a "Type A Workaholic." All 13 are peak performers within their respective careers. All have exceptional intelligence, talent, energy, determination, and (perhaps most important of all) clearly defined goals and objectives. All had to overcome all manner of obstacles, many of them gender-specific. Also, as Landrum explains very well, each has a unique, indeed compelling personality. As each overcomes obstacles, her unique personality is most evident.

      Some readers may disagree with the selections and/or with Landrum's definition of "genius" as applied to each of his selections. I rate this book so highly because it is well written, because it provides so much information of which I was not previously aware, and because (with great skill) Landrum allows each of these remarkable women to reveal herself through what she has said and done. After you read the 13 "profiles", I suggest that you re-read Chapters 1-7 to gain even more value from what those introductory chapters offer.

      I thought the book was very intriguing in the way it portrayed these women as visionaries and fearless. When I read the book I was very fascinated by each of the women's background and how they started from nothing to going all the way to the top. I have recommended the book to many of my friends that carry the same spririt as these women in the book. I was impressed with the author's presentation of their background which made me respect these women more for doing what is usually not encouraged among women.

          Are the combined human resources at U.S. FOODSERVICE productive? There is no absolute answer to this question. This report considers the extent to which the company's labor deployment indicators differ from global benchmarks. In this report we consider forecasts of differences between labor ratios and the resulting return on this human investment compared to global benchmarks; the estimation of such differences is commonly called a "gap analysis." What is the ratio of short-term and long-term assets to employee? What are typical capital-labor ratios? How different are these ratios to companies serving the same link in the value chain? What are the average sales and net profits per employee compared to global benchmarks? These and over 50 other indicators of labor productivity are considered in this report. The report does so by going beyond traditional analyses by considering companies competing in the same or similar industrial classification at a global level. The goal of this report, therefore, is to assist consultants, human resource managers, strategic planners, and corporate officers in gauging estimates of a company's human resource indicators compared to firms competing or participating in the same economic sector, at the global level. This report is not about whether a particular company or industry has performed well or poorly in the past or will do so in the future. With the globalization of markets, greater foreign competition, and the reduction of entry barriers, it becomes all the more important to benchmark a company's human resource indicators against other firms on a worldwide basis. Doing so, however, is not an obvious task. First, one needs to find firms competing in the same sector, but not necessarily competing directly with the company in local markets. These firms should not be perceived, therefore, to be direct competitors to the company in question, but simply those that have been classified by various sources (e.g. EDGAR or similar foreign filings), as competing to serve customers in the same link of the value chain, or broad industrial classification, as identified by SIC, NAICS or similar codes. Second, given the international nature of the task, one needs to control for exchange rate volatility. Finally, one needs use comparable financial standards. This report overcomes these issues and gives full human resources benchmarks vis-a-vis worldwide competitors who are present in the same narrow industrial classification. Benchmarks cover labor-asset ratios, labor-liability ratios, and labor-income ratios. Since our reports are printed on demand, the statistics reported are for the latest quarter and are the most up to date available (4 updates are produced each year).                     This is a great book about soul, I read many things about artists that I had not found in the normal biographies. It covers a lot: chicago, stax, detroit. Only Muscle Shoals is sadly forgotten. In that case Peter Guralnicks 'Sweet Soul Music' is a better buy

                    This monumental work consists of three parts. Part One: Singing Both Sides, looks at the Gospel and Blues roots of Soul Music, the record companies that first recorded this style, the DJs and the radio stations that played it, and includes interviews with Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Cissy Houston, Ben E. King, Ahmet Ertegun, James Bown and Wilson Pickett. The pioneering work of Ray Charles features heavily here.

                    Part Two: City Soul, starts with a look at the early Soul artists on Atlantic and other labels and includes the reminiscences of Jerry Wexler, includes information on Solomon Burke, Sam Cooke, Motown Records, plus interviews with Smokey Robinson, Mary Wells, Martha Reeves, Diana Ross, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson and Aretha Franklin. It also includes information on Curtis Mayfield and the Chicago-based record companies.

                    Part Three: Southern Soul, deals with James Brown again, the Memphis scene, Stax Records and its legendary artists, Sam & Dave, Otis Redding, Muscle Shoals, Joe Tex, Isaac Hayes, the New Orleans scene, and concludes with a poignant interview with Irma Thomas.

                    As a young teen I was enthralled by the voices of Aretha Franklin, The Supremes, Gladys Knight, Percy Sledge and others, so this book finally made the people behind the music come alive for me. It is easy to get lost in its labyrinthine pleasures, to discover how, when and where favourite songs were written, to learn about the backgrounds of the musicians, the record companies and the business people like Ertegun and Berry Gordy.

                    Hirshey's history of Motown and Southern Soul music offers 23 brilliant chapters, each loosely based around material gathered either in interviews or by spending time with a particular performer or group. And Hirshey writes like a DREAM. Here's Aretha at a rehersal Hirshey attended: "She waved hello with a half-eaten cheeseburger, finished it off, and walked to a music stand in the center of the room. She was wearing a red velour slacks outfit beneath a loose gray coat. A half dozen packs of Kools filled a roomy black leather satchel. Aretha lit a cigarette, nodded to the stout, dashikied concertmaster, squared her shoulders, and took a long, deep, drag of smoke. Ten feet from the epicenter, I felt the first note square in the solar plexus. It hummed through every membrane in the room, saturated the gouged acoustic baffling, rising higher, louder, in a blue cloud of Kool smoke, echoing up the sooty airshaft, a Pentecostal crack in the dense city night. 'Jesus God,' the studio watchman whispered. 'Almighty Jesus God.'" Convinced?                     This monumental work consists of three parts. Part One: Singing Both Sides, explores the Gospel and Blues roots of Soul Music, the record companies that first recorded this style, the DJs and the radio stations that played it, and includes interviews with Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Cissy Houston, Ben E. King, Ahmet Ertegun, James Brown and Wilson Pickett. The pioneering work of Ray Charles features heavily here.

                    Part Two: City Soul, starts with a look at the early Soul artists on Atlantic Records and other labels and includes the reminiscences of Jerry Wexler, information on Solomon Burke, Sam Cooke, Motown Records, plus interviews with Smokey Robinson, Mary Wells, Martha Reeves, Diana Ross, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson and Aretha Franklin. It also includes information on Curtis Mayfield and the Chicago-based record companies.

                    Part Three: Southern Soul, deals with James Brown again, the Memphis scene, Stax Records and its legendary artists, Sam & Dave, Otis Redding, Muscle Shoals, Joe Tex, Isaac Hayes, the New Orleans scene, and concludes with a poignant interview with Irma Thomas.

                    As a young teen I was enthralled by the voices of Aretha Franklin, The Supremes, Gladys Knight, Percy Sledge and others, so this book finally made the people behind the music come alive for me.                             I've always been a fan of "For Dummies" books. I can't get enough of them, and learning there was one of these titles about BitTorrent made my day, since I had been very much in the dark about this technology... in general in the dark about anything remotely related to Peer-to-Peer for more than three years. So I gave the book by Susannah Gardner and Kris Krug a shot, and it was all that I expected.

                            After a primer on the technology, the purpose of BitTorrent in the spectrum of peer-to-peer protocols out there and tools to find, download and manage torrents, the book deals head on with the copyright implications of downloading illegal torrents, offering resources to help find legal (and fun) torrent material.

                            While a few of the chapters were about topics that were slightly peripheral to the main subject (production and promotion of torrents, for instance), the bulk of the book was fantastic for the newbie (a.k.a. ME!) to get on the know about BitTorrent and start getting my first streams of torrent juice flowing into my machine's hard drive. [...]

                            Gardner describes the basic idea behind BitTorrent. How someone downloading runs a BitTorrent client that can in turn upload portions of a file to another client. This is the distinguishing characteristic of the network, as realised by Bram Cohen.

                            You can see from the book that the client is easy to obtain from various websites, and easy to set up and run. The etiquette is that if you download a file, that you should keep your client connected to the net. So that it can answer quests from others. Which is probably how you were able to quickly get the file in the first place.

                            While the book advises that you should not download copyrighted material like movies, one has to wonder how many readers will actually desist.

                            Napster was a program/company/concept that excited millions of people before it blew up because of violating copyright laws. Other organizations such as KaZaA came in to do the same thing but were careful to not violate the copyright laws that got Napster. The critical thing was that Napster facilitated illegal copying by providing users with technical support. Huh? you might well be saying, but this comes from Chapter 6 on Understanding BitTorrent and the Law.

                            BitTorrent is a freeware package (but the developer will accept donations) that facilitates peer to peer file sharing. It is perfectly legal to use for the copying of non-copyrighted material. This book, like most of the 'For Dummies' books is a complete introduction to using the software and includes a lot of extra comments on sites that have BitTorrent materials for downloading, on searching for additional content, on using BitTorrent for distribution of materials inside large organizations.

                            Like with most of their books, it is well written, covers the material well, and is quite complete.

                            BitTorrent is one of those file-sharing technologies that I've heard about but never really understood. To remedy that, I got a review copy of BitTorrent For Dummies by Susannah Gardner and Kris Krug. I now understand why this is such a better architecture than others...

                            Now the first thing that comes to mind when discussing peer-to-peer software for file sharing is the illegal downloading of copyrighted software. Gardner and Krug make sure that the reader has *no* defense along the lines of "I didn't know it was wrong". They do a great job in explaining the laws, why downloading certain material is illegal, and how to find sites that have legal content for downloading. That won't stop people from using it to get the latest Madonna single or video, but you've been warned. After that's out of the way, they explain how BitTorrent works and how your behavior when using the software affects all other users. After reading the book, I now know all about seeds, swarms, and leeches. I also know where to go to start using BitTorrent for accessing and distributing my own material.

                            The only "problem" I have with the book is with Part 3. It's on how to create video and audio material like podcasts or home videos that can be digitized and stored online. It really isn't material that's specific to BitTorrent usage, and it will only appeal to people who want to create content to share with others. In fact, I've seen much of this material covered in books on podcasting, and it seems to make more sense in a book like that. I think that if you already want to create content, BitTorrent isn't going to be your driving technology like podcasting might be. It's not bad material... I just don't think I would have included it here.

                            Basically, an interesting book on a technology that is redefining how content is controlled and distributed in the digital world. If you want to know how to make it part of your world, it's worth reading...
