Though some documents are understandably edited for length (the entire book is almost 1000 pages) this book is surprisingly comprehensive. I have not seen another text that includes as many important primary documents from such a span of our History in one single volume--and for as low a price as it is. It is an excellent buy.

"Our Nation's Archive: The History of the United States in Documents" is a phenomenal one-of-a-kind historical compendium that will thrill not only the historian and student, but also any citizen mildly interested in our country's evolution.

At around 900 pages, it may seem daunting or just another dusty tome of boring text. Instead, it is fascinating and riveting, providing EVERY important direct source document associated with the U.S., from its birth to its continuation into the modern age.

Brilliantly, editors Bruun and Crosby have also managed to include "documents" almost never included in history books -- speeches, articles and even poetry -- related to the primary documents of the events of the particular period.

For example, official documents pertaining to the Great Depression are reprinted, along with a section from John Steinbeck's "Grapes of Wrath," a novel of people who lived and suffered through those Dust Bowl days. Likewise, not only is the Executive Order interning Japanese Americans during World War II included, so is a side-bar describing the impact on Japanese American families who lost all of their property.

In an age when everything in society seems to revolve around the latest technological advancement, it is very centering to go through this book and read the true historical achievements of these incredible United States. Vividly illustrating its tragedies, as well as the justice and injustice done in the name of this nation, this book is truly like no other.

From the Declaration of Independence and the courts, to the true voices of vaunted politicians in their own words as well as the views of everyday citizens, events come to life in as astonishing a publishing accomplishment to come along in decades.

With a "couldn't-be-cheaper" price, this edition deserves to be in every home, library and school room in America. Even if you thought you knew the history of the United States from sea to shining sea, there is plenty inside these pages to surprise, delight or even sadden and sicken the most careful scholar.

Superb.......2005-04-06

This is a book for those who are interested in the history of this country and want to read that history from the original documents rather than someone's interpretation of those documents. I suggest that, serially, you look for an area that interests you and then enjoy the stimulation of reading the original thoughts on your own. Other reviews that are critical apparently prefer reading academic media with plenty of footnotes. You'll learn a lot more from reading any part of this book than you will reading almost any academic article including all of its footnotes. You'll also come away with more appreciation for the spirit of the documents by reading them in the original.

Good Primary Source Guide.......2004-01-25

Excellent book of primary sources. The author did not intend to put whole documents in this book. If you feel like you need the whole document, most of these can be found on the web.

Failed Attempt at a Good Idea.......2002-10-04

This book has one redeeming quality: the volume contains many unusual and telling 'pieces' descriptive of American history.
However,the volume is flawed in two fatal and fundamental ways. 1) There is no bibliography, thus the reader has no way to determine where the editors located their material. For example, the first piece in the volume ("How the World was Made") is simply attributed to 'The Cherokee Nation'. 2) The editing of the material is suspect at best. The Rev. Dr. King's "Letter from Birmingham Jail" has been redacted from its original fifty pargraphs to a mere 18 without wxplanation. Don't buy this book.

Key book for the elementary music educator.......2005-01-28

This book provides a solid foundation for teaching with Kodály method in the United States. As well as curriculum ideas for Kindergarten through grade 6, there are many songs for classroom use.

I think that if you will be teaching Kindergarten you should also own Music in Preschool by K. Forrai. This book gives only passing notice to the Kindergarten year, in my opinion

The Definitive book on the Kodaly Method.......2004-06-28

I read the first edition of Choksy's "Kodaly Method" after my first year of teaching, and thought, "why didn't they teach me this in college?". The next year, I bought the second edition when it came out, and used it as a guide for teaching for many years. It had become so tattered and worn, but I still referred back to it. I broke down and bought the third edition last summer, while doing my level 2 Kodaly certification. I wasn't sure I wanted to pay that much for the book, but it has been worth it.
For anyone starting out in teaching music, you need this book. It gives grade by grade guidance of what to teach, how to teach it, and suggested materials to use. You might not set up your curriculum exactly as stated in the book, but you will definitely find useful teaching examples for the main concepts at each grade level.
The song anthology in the back has been expanded and is more complete than ever before. There is quite a bit of pedagogical information for each song, that is included in this edition.
My only question is "Why don't American colleges and universities use this method as the basis for preparing its teachers?". It is definitely the most thorough and sound foundation to build upon at the undergraduate level; then procede into Orff-Schulwerk training at the graduate level. Both of these approaches have been so integrated into American music teaching, they deserve more intensive study in teacher preparation than the casual mention or superficial discussion that they seem to currently receive.

Don't get me started on one of the biggest scams that takes place in the USA. It is the tenured professors who stuff the college bookstores and their own pockets with money while saying nothing but superfluous fluff on the pages.

when I first met Hal Himmelstein I was told of the many accomplishments of this young professor. I failed to see how his accomplishments made him a good teacher or writer.

I have read this and other books by Mr. himmelstein and they ahve enforced my belief that the college textbook industry produces
the same fluff under differant titles and second and third printings as a way to pick a students pocket every semester.

This book will not teach you anything you do not already know.
Himmelsteins writings are those of a holier than thou liberal who has achieved academic nirvana and now as many elitist liberals do. They will share their wonderful knowledge with you.

Perfect numerical methods book as one can get for a 1st course........2005-11-17

A great textbook for a first course in Numerical Methods as it gives an extensive yet detailed coverage of numerical techniques that form the base for more advanced work in CFD. This book is based almost entirely on the finite difference method for solving differential equations. A chapter addresses finite element techniques but it only a primer; you will need a textbook solely devoted to FEM. This book is written for a mechanical engineer, as most of the governing equations are invariably from the areas of heat transfer, fluid flow, gas dynamics and solid mechanics.

The good points are
1. Each method described comes with a index notated formula that takes the head ache out of programming. Plus there are plenty of FORTRAN subroutines to look at.

2. Not only does Hoffman give you the finite difference equation he also throws in a solved example with one or two iterations worked out in full detail; the benefit of this cannot be overstated.

3. Plenty of practice problems with results at the back of the book.

4. Enough math to give the reader an insight into how the method works. If you care for rigor this is not the book.

The drawbacks are
1. Hoffman has condensed the portions dealing with PDE's from previous editions cutting out some theoretical development. Since most wouldn't have had a course in PDE's (like me) a few more pages might have better squared away a few difficult concepts (eg. characteristic lines of PDE's).

2. Could use another round of proof-reading. This book is littered with typos; which one runs into even in key formulas. This is unacceptable in what is otherwise a pedagogically sound book.

3. I would have liked to see some more elaboration on multidimensional problems in PDE's apart from the 1D unsteady examples which form the workhorse. Hoffman mentions that the explicit methods for 1D unsteady problems work for higher while the implicit schemes introduce numerical complexity which merit advanced methods. These specialized methods for higher dimensional parabolic and hyperbolic PDE's are not developed. As it stands the book is packed with enough material for 3 semesters study.

This book works well for self study. Everything from linear algebra (direct and iterative methods, LU factorization, eigenproblems), non-linear eqns, interpolation, numerical integration and differentiation, ODE's, BVP's, and PDE's is touched upon. Unlike most introductory texts Hoffman doesn't shy away from non-linear problems in differential equations.

I used it for the num. methods course even though the prescribed text was Heath's Scientific Computing which was the worst textbook I ever read (thankfully never purchased it). If you are getting started in CFD then this book provides a solid first step.

An excellent work!.......1999-11-30

Dr. Hoffman has written a splendid book. For an introduction to numerical methods it is lucid and in-depth simultaneously. Provides fundamentally important knowledge on the whole gamut of numerical solutions techniques and issues.
